I've used Timberline Tree several time over the past few years - for our home and my father's home; their team does a great job tending to large oak trees. In the past, their service was good and fairly dependable. Unfortunately, my most recent experience has been disappointing. I reached out in August to schedule our annual trimming and was told I'd receive a quote the next day. It took several follow-ups over several weeks before I received it, and when I replied right away to confirm and get on the schedule, I received no response. Then, out of the blue, I was contacted with a same-day availability that I simply couldn't accommodate. I was told I'd get a new date the following week, but I never heard back. I understand things can get busy, especially since they are contracted with the City of Burlingame for tree service, but as a residential customer, I would have appreciated more reliable communication and follow-through. I've since moved on to another company that was more responsive. I'm sharing this review in hopes it helps Timberline improve their residential customer service in the future, because they've long been a trusted local name. read more

They came out and gave me an estimate asap and the price was very fair and competitive to cut and trim an 80 year old maple tree. They showed up on time on the day with team a truck and chipper and did the job exactly right. Perfectly trimmed all way to the top and symmetrical all around. Received an estimate from Justin for stump removals and scheduled time for their crew to come back the following week, but their team never showed up. I called back to reschedule for the week after (and did this 3 more times), but each week, their team never showed up. Eventually they stopped picking up my calls. The stump removals were a bottleneck for a landscaping project that I'm doing, and it ended up pushing back my project by a month because of all of this back and forth. I don't understand why they didn't just tell me that they either couldn't or didn't want to do the project, so I could move on and find someone else to do the job. I did eventually hire a different company, but waiting on Timberline was a huge waste of my time. So annoying - would not recommend working with them. read more

I say "trimming" because they did a poor job (didn't even finish it after being asked multiple times to shape and thin it properly). The worst! My parents visited me half a year ago and put a lot of work into our yard. Countless hours of mulching, putting down stones, planting flowers. When timerline came they destroyed so much of that. I almost cried when I saw our yard after they were gone. Edging was broken and left laying in the yard, plants trampled, stones broken and dispersed everywhere, sawdust covering all of our mulch and yard. Of course they will not be returning and I will be left with fixing everything since our landlord will likely do nothing. Very sad and disappointing. read more

Timberline was referred to me by a retiring arborist neighbor. Out of the 5 contractors I interviewed, Mariano stood out because he was the only one who noticed the cracks at the base of our huge leaning oak tree. It was leaning so badly that its crown ended up in our downhill neighbor's yard, and I had been wondering about the tree's stability. His price was very good too. Right away he was my top choice. The only down side was that I had to wait 5 weeks because they were very busy. When the date came, his team showed up promptly and did a fantastic job. I had the tree trimmed 3 times in the past, only ended up with taller more leaning tree. This time I was determined to get my message through that I must keep the tree smaller and safer. So glad I found Mariano. Will definitely use them again in the future. Highly recommend them. read more

Very bummed to write this update. Not only did I buy the entire crew lunch on their last day, but I paid Justin a $700 bonus - more than 10% of his bid for doing a great job. Before I left the property that day, he said he was fixing the fence, where one big piece of the tree had fallen and taken out a panel. I assumed it had been done - nope. I live 4 hours away from this rental property - it is an expensive one, that requires it to be kept up. I have called him repeatedly to fix the fence and did so again just now. He does not answer his phone and the message box is full. I have new tenants and this is an eyesore. I am planting a replacement tree and this needs to be repaired. It has been months with repeated attempts by me and repeated promises that he would fix it. I now regret paying a bonus, since I will need to spend a couple of hundred dollars to fix it. Note: as a last resort, I emailed the company directly and waited a week - and got no response, even when I emailed them what I intended to say on Yelp. Very sad because the crew did great work, but the management seems to care little for their reputation. read more

Totally unreliable. Do not waste your time. I have no idea what their deal is but they no showed on me twice. First time they no showed I was able to get them to actually show on a follow up appointment. Second booking they no showed even after assuring me that I did not need to re confirm the day before the appointment. We are 6 weeks past the missed appointment and I can't get a call back from anyone. Very un professional. Not like they aren't in a SAFETY service profession. I have a dead tree hanging over street, sidewalk and power line where a huge branch has already fallen--which they were fully aware of when they bid the job. I will say this, WHEN they show up they do good work. But this nonsense is just unacceptable. At least tell me they don't want to do the work rather than say someone will call me back. I am glad that many people had good experiences with Timberline. I called them because I saw them working in my neighborhood; however, I am diappointed to said that I am still waiting for them to call to schedule the service. I received a quote from Justin on 11/15 and he said he would call me right back to give me the date. Three days later, I called back and left message because he didn't call me. And I left another message again on 11/22 again because he didn't call back. I understood that it is holiday season and everybody is extremely busy. Get ready for their disappearing after confirming a schedule. They will remember your phone number and never answer your phone. Of course, leaving voice mails everyday won't change their mind. I just wanted to know whether they stopped responding. Called everyday for more than 20 days, and left voice mails almost every time. No return call. Be forwarned!!! This company treated us horribly and engaged in unethical business practices. Here is the story of what they did: We called them because we had three large trees that needed to be removed. Justin agreed to meet our gardener Sal to evaluate the job and email me his quote. They met and I did recieve the quote. I was pleased with it so I called Justin and told him we awarded the job to him and that he was to coodinate with Sal so that we could get the job done as soon as possible. These trees were precariously hanging over our house so they needed to go. But, Justin would never call me back. I called him. I texted him. I emailed him. But he never called me back. He totally ghosted me. And here's the total slap in the face. He called my gardener Sal and got a big tree removal job, 20 trees so big money right? I don't blame Sal because he didn't know Justin was ghosting me at the time. So, not only did Justin not do my job but he enriched himself by using my gardener to source a bigger job. So, very poor service right? Which might be why the City of Burlingame did not extend his contract with them as their arborist. You have been forwarned. read more

I hired Timberline to remove a few dead branches from a couple trees in my backyard. The owner came out to give an estimate which I accepted and his worker came out to do the job the next day. When the job was done, only a tree stump was left without any branches on it. This is out a picture window from inside, which makes it all the worse. The owner ignored my calls and only answered when he received a call from another phone number. He eventually came out and said he would return later that day to remove the stump and plant something in its place. He didn't show. He was reached again and promised to come out again, and didn't show. The owner is rude and cocky and clearly doesn't care about correcting (or admitting to) any wrongdoing. read more

I have the same experience as most of the other 1 star reviews. I scheduled for an estimate and yup, it was a no show and no call as other reviewers have stated. Over my 2 weeks time of getting estimates out of 7 companies, this is the only one with no show no call. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't even call this company for an estimate due to its low yelp ratings.( I've been an active yelp user for so many years, I am now starting to contribute to this great community). However, this is the only company that I received recommendation from my best friend who lives in Burlingame saying that they do a lot of work in Burlingame and that they have good price. Hmmmm. Maybe that is what the other low rating reviewers heard too because several other reviewers waited weeks and months for their no show no call estimates. Well, I did call them few days after the no show no call appointment and asked what happened? No explanation. I asked if I could get another appointment or if the estimator came at other time since the tree is in the backyard that can be accessed from the side of the house. They said they will try to find out what happened and call me back. You guessed it. It's been almost a week and no call back. Well, I'm not going to wait for them when they don't even take care of their own past clients, they definitely won't take care of me. Today, I had the required work done to great satisfaction by Firefighters Tree Service who has excellent yelp reviews (see my review.). I did see one past client of Timberline say the tree cutters do good work. But the office and estimators are ruining it for them with this no show no call don't care attitude. My review isn't so much about the Palm tree Timberline groomed for us, it's about the complete lack of communication about the damage it would cause to my house, yard, car, neighbor's houses, yards and cars and the 2 neighbors' yards behind us. They were on time and spent a half a day grooming the palm but honestly, BEWARE because my day has been pretty awful. I'm a landscape designer and know it's important to let my clients know what to expect when large, disruptive services are being planned. For instance, they did not tell us to move our car several blocks away and my car vents are now full of sawdust from the palm tree that coated everything in my vehicle the minute I started it up. My car was parked several houses away. They didn't tell me I'd need to hire a roof and gutter cleaner because my gutters are now full of palm debris that is visibly hanging off of them. I have now offered to pay for my neighbors to also have their gutters cleaned because it's in theirs as well. They didn't tell me to move all of my expensive planters with brand new plants in them (that were not near the palm) because they'd be filled to the brim with palm leaves and debris, and would also be crushed beyond saving (how does that even happen?). They definitely didn't tell me that the palm dust/debris would come in through my chimney, coating my living room, as well as through every crack in every window of my new home - bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, and dining room. I'm really irritated that no form of "what to expect" or "how to prepare" was sent to me nor was call taken seriously when I called them about a half hour into it to tell them that the mess was really horrific. They said, "I'll call my guys and see if they're going to clean up and we'll call you back." No one called back. I've spent the past 4 hours vacuuming and picking up debris from my house and my neighbors. I have to get all new plants for the planters and bear the cost of gutter cleaning when everything was literally just cleaned for my move-in. They DID use a leaf blower to blow the debris around a lot more and they swept up whatever they got into a pile. This is San Mateo, it's windy, as a company that creates massive mess, they should always let clients know how very huge of a problem palm tree trimming creates. I would have moved all plants into the garage, parked my car on another block, sealed all my windows with towels, and had THEM pay for the gutters. Really bummed out right now and will not recommend them to my clients. I require my vendors to care about the client properties. Palm trees are very different than a pine, eucalyptus, whatever. They are apparently a really huge disaster to groom and you should basically move out before it happens. read more

One never wants a 5:00am wake-up call when a large tree comes crashing down during a Thursday morning storm. Fortunately, we had worked with Timberline Tree Service in the past but this was real crunch time as the tree fell into my neighbors parking lot. From the moment I called at 7:30am we were in the capable hands of Mariano and his team, Mariano arrived as scheduled for the site review and within an hour the team was onsite removing the fallen tree. Long and short: this business is hit or miss. I met with Steve on a Friday and did a thorough walk through of my property. We discussed removing several trees and grinding down numerous stumps. Steve said I would receive the quote via email on the following Monday. A week later, I never received the quote so I called the office to follow up. When I spoke to Chris, he said that there was an issue with my email and he would send it within the half-hour. Well, another week went by and still no quote. I called again, my number was taken and was told that they would call me back with information. Well, no surprise....they never did call back. Normally, I would never give a company this many chances but my mother has used them. Her experience was quite positive: their pricing was very reasonable and they have always done a wonderful job. Sadly for them, they will not be getting my business and it would have been for more than just tree removal. read more

It is hard to compare when this is my first experience with a tree removal service. You can rate them for yourself. As for me, the initial quote for the tree service went well. I made an appointment with Chris and he showed up. He gave me a quote to remove some trees as well as the stumps. After a few weeks, I called them to schedule an appointment. They gave me an appointment time and the staff showed up to remove the trees on that day. However that was the end to the speedy service. I called a few days later to inquire about the stump that needs to be removed. They said they would get back to me. They never got back. In a few days, I noticed 1/3 of the stumps were removed. That was good and another few days go by. I had to call them back. The receptionist was nice and said they would inquire about it. They came and finished another stump. Now 1/2 the stumps have been grind. I called again. They called me back and said that they needed to check the quote. They checked the quote and indeed all the stumps need to be grinded. They called me back to say they will grind the stumps. They never confirmed a time but just that they will get to it. After numerous phone calls and a span of almost two weeks, they finally finished all the stump grinding. Not sure if a typical tree removal and stump grinding takes a half-dozen phone calls to complete. read more

We received an abatement notice for a property with no structures that had overgrown like a jungle. The property is on a hillside and has a creek running down the middle of it. I called about 10 places before I found Steve at Timberline. The price range from the other guys was insanely varied the highest being $10,000 to someone who wanted to put a couple of guys and machetes then charge for time which was also a messy and expensive way to go. Steve saved the day. He had the most efficient method and oddly the BEST price. He is professional and courteous. Amazing service. They did the job but they also proposed ideas to be more efficient doing the work and be more cost effective . Their prices are competitive (I did checked many other companies) . Justin came and bid the job of removing the lower half of a pine tree in our back yard. The job was scheduled and a non-English speaking crew arrived on the scheduled day. Communication was minimal because of the language difference. They removed fence boards and did not put them back. They ground wood in front of our house and scattered debris onto neighbors' property that they did not clean up. They had wood stacked beyond the coned-in area of the street and covered the entire sidewalk when they had a 4 car-drive way they could have worked in. Because we were disappointed we called Timberline and Steve, the owner, came out after 2 phone calls to Justin. He laughed off our concerns. He sent Luis, the stump-grinder, to finish the job. Luis did a very nice and neat job. We will not call Timberline in the future. read more

These folks just cut my neighbor's trees. Unfortunately, they left a huge mess in my yard. There were leaves and branches all over my grass and children's toys. I was pretty disappointed that this happened and no body came over to pick up the mess left. It is not acceptable to ruin someone else's yard and property while doing a job. read more
