My husband and I love Mexican food but we def are not food snobs (we love chipolte) and we love Montclair so this was a great Groupon for us. We both had burritos and they were just so-so. Very average, i-can-make-this-myself-at-home type of Mexican burrito. Even Chipolte has more flavor in its burritos. Location is nice and we sat outside in the back patio. I'm rarely this disappointed in delivery food because my expectations aren't exactly high for it. I ordered via Seamless because this place had great reviews on there. I wish I had checked Yelp as well, but alas. So I got a chicken tinga burrito delivered. I asked for it to be made in a whole wheat wrap (which was a drop-down option on the app), and bizarrely enough, they packed me a warmed up whole wheat wrap on the side, that was SO warm it just became mush. But anyway, what were they expecting me to do with it? Empty the contents of the burrito and re-wrap the thing in the new tortilla? So strange. It didn't really get better from there. The red salsa they packed on the side tasted exactly like Tostitos (shiver) and the guacamole tasted like it was made with unripe avocados. Just meh, no seasoning, no brightness. And it's honestly difficult to f*$% up guacamole. The burrito itself was more meh. I was promised 'tinga' sauce inside, but I don't think it was there. The chicken was totally dry, like reaallllyyy grossly dry. I thought it would have been grilled but it was just plain, roasted breast. So boring. Rice and beans were definitely not the best I've ever had. The entire thing was dry and just lacking overall seasoning and texture and all the contrasting components that make burritos awesome. Chipotle and Qdoba do a better job than this. This is bland, white-people "Mexican" food at best. I've gone here several times and the first time I went about 2 years ago was great. Good burrito and amazing guacamole. Each time I went the quality of the food diminished exponentially. This review is not about the service. It's about what they serve and call food. Went for lunch with a friend and split a mushroom quesadilla and I got a Tinga Chicken Burrito or something to that extent. Beans, rice, and chicken... wow... The food at Moe's is better. The nice hot sauce on the table didn't even help make this slop taste better. The time I went before this I had a buffalo chicken burrito and I would definitely tell you to avoid that since it seemed like it was frozen, microwavable chicken tenders that were in the burrito. read more

I really like this place, probably more for the feel than for the food. It's a really cute little local mexican food place. The service is always great, very attentive and friendly. The food is good , but not great. Although I'm from So Cal so no mexican food out here meets my standards. But Tinga is one of the best around here I've found. I really wanted to like this place because the interior is cute and the staff is very pleasant, but I came here to eat and the food was very underwhelming. Like every typical Mexican joint, they bring free chips and salsa to your table. The chips were decent and the salsa was the color and consisteny of ketchup. It looked like something I could get at Shop Rite if I was too lazy to make fresh salsa. I ordered the catfish tacos and my husband ordered the shrimp tacos, but honestly, it didn't matter because they both tasted the same... totally bland! The soft tortilla was rubbery and tasteless, the catfish was rubbery and tasteless, the shrimp were rubbery and tasteless. There was some cheese hidden at the bottom of the tacos which was also rubbery and tasteless. The mountain of cabbage was probably the only thing keeping the whole thing from feeling like I was eating leather. The only redeeming thing about these dishes was the rice and beans, which were decent and somewhat flavorful. Come on guys, you have a lovely establishment and a nice staff. Put some salt and pepper on the food. Maybe even some cumin, some chili powder, some cilantro, give me a slice of lime at least... In the meantime, here is a list of places where you can get a better taco: my house, Chipotle, Qdoba, Chevy's, even Tops Diner in East Newark makes better fish tacos. read more

Can't go wrong here. During the summer there is outside seating. Very affordable, great bang for your buck. BYOB and great vibe. The staff is friendly, albeit it could be slow, the food more than makes up for the extra wait. If you like fish, I'd go for the blackened fish tacos. They offer a great vegetarian Chilli and there are plenty of options for the meat eaters. It can get crowded on weekends, so give yourself some time. Little hole in the wall Mexican spot with great food. The chicken and the beef are super fresh. Order the guacamole - it's a creamy recipe that goes very well with the homemade chips. This place is a bring your own but there are a few options around to pick up beer or wine. The prices are very reasonable and the portion sizes large. They're quick about getting your food out. This is no fine dining but the decor and ambiance is exactly what you'd expect from an authentic Mexican place...one that's not trying too hard. Parking can be a bit challenging at times but when you find a spot don't forget to feed the meter! This place fills up quickly with only about 10 tables in the whole place. We used to order from Tinga way too often when I worked in Montclair. So I'm a fan. I used to often get the half burrito and salad special. Definitely more than enough food. Their salad is soooo good, it has the best dressing. Their quesadillas are also really really good. They always gave complimentary chips - yum - and you must try their Mexican sodas. Apps- fried avocado. Sounded different, n I love avocado so why not? People there are certain things that are not meant to be fried. To their credit I did like the batter they used and it was nicely browned. Entrée - mushroom quesadilla. EWW it tasted like they didn't even wash the portabella mushrooms before stuffing them into the dry tortilla w/ imitation cheese, and flavorless caramelized onions. I moved a few towns away from Montclair last month, and a friend immediately said to me, "We'll have to go to Tinga's someday!" So when we met up recently and wanted to get dinner, I suggested that we go to Tinga's. The restaurant is small and it was crowded on the night we went, but we were seated right away and we quickly received our drinks and some complimentary chips and salsa. I went to the bathroom as soon as we got in, so I didn't have a ton of time to look over the menu. The waiter didn't hurry us or anything, but my friend knew what she wanted right away so I didn't want to keep anyone waiting. I asked for the carne asada burrito and I was not disappointed ... it was tasty and GIGANTIC. I barely finished half of it, and I had to take the other half home. My friend got some kind of chicken taco, I think, and she said she enjoyed hers as well. I was happy with the food and service, and I will gladly go back. Next time I think I'd like to try a barbecued sandwich or a quesadilla. read more

After moving from two different cities with great authentic mexican food, I was excited to find a place that called themselves a 'taqueria.' I have tried this place twice, and both times have been a pretty poor experience. The "mini tacos" filled with pork were very small and bland, and I had to pour tons of hot sauce on them to give them any kind of flavor. The second time, I had a vegetarian burrito with black beans, guac, rice, etc. It tasted like someone slopped together some low-quality ingredients from the canned food outlet and stuck it in the microwave for a minute. It's run by a group of young, friendly hispanics (mexican maybe?) who you would think would be more than capable of making a quality meal, but their looks are decieving. The only reason Tinga doesn't get one star is because of its charming interior design and location in Upper Montclair. read more

I've given a one star review only once before in the last few years! This one deserves the one star because: 1. The owner of the restaurant didn't want to accommodate us outside because we had a stroller. Not that they were super busy. There were two tables open outside. 2. When we explained to the server and then manager that he wanted to sit outside so that our pet doesn't need to be left in the car on a beautiful spring day, they said they would not like to inconvenience their other customers with dogs. However they were pet friendly when we called them prior to arriving. (FYI: I have a medium sized dog who is more well behaved than my baby in social settings) 3. Montclair and the restaurants on this street are pet friendly and children friendly. Being jerks to customers is not the way business is conducted. 4. Take out food from here deserves two stars. read more

Do not order through this company's website. There are discrepancies between what you order on the site and what is on the restaurant's menu. Specifically, even where you request additional items on the side, and pay for the extra charge, they may not give you the items and it may not be reflected on your receipt. We asked for a side of guacamole and although it is reflected on the email with our order from the website it was not on our receipt at pickup and was not in our bag (but we were charged). Also, we ordered a side of fries. The website says nothing about the fries coming with cheese or toppings; I double-checked to make sure. Nevertheless the receipt attached to our order at pickup says fries with cheese. So no guac and fries we won't eat. Two thirds of our online order was wrong. Our delivery man did not have change so made off with a hefty tip. When I ordered chips and guacamole, they gave us the 8oz serving of guacamole with a tiny bag of chips. What?! I think the food is great and Mexican is not my first choice when going out to eat. I've eaten here twice, one of those times being last night. Everything was fresh, well seasoned and delicious. Love the guacamole and chips. Food came out fast. Had shrimp tacos and steak tacos with my dinner partner. Plenty of shrimp and I liked the cheese and cabbage. Added some of the guac. So good. This being my first time back to Tinga in a few years, I must say the service and food have severely taken a dive for the worse. From an unhelpful waitress to bland dry food. I'm disappointed that the place I thought was great "authentic" Mexican has turned into a worse version of Taco Bell. For starters our silverware and napkins (common preset table essentials) did not arrive to us until AFTER we received our food. Normally I wouldn't nit pick but it just got worse from there. There was a constant drip of water from the AC unit above the table that forced my friend to change seats. When the food came out (after 10-15 minutes of waiting) I was expecting to see sizzling plates and got nothing but room temp to cold food! Whereas my friends had decently good plates mine was by far the worse. From my steak tacos to the rice and beans. Bland favor throughout the plate. The steak in my tacos were dry cold and tough to even bite into. The warmest things on my plate were the beans and they were approaching room temp as well. Aside from food the waitress was also like any other one I've seen in poorly run restaurants. Hanging out by her coworkers or monitor. Barely made a glance our way. Not asking how our food was which shows a careless server. plus an attitude when speaking with us. Even if the food was terrible and we received great service I would have written a better review or even left a better tip. Tinga needs to rethink staff and up they're food and service if they want to keep competing with the better nearby restaurants of Montclair. Hopefully if I ever decide to want to go back they will have done just that. read more

Definitely not super authentic, but decent. Started with the fried avocado which was good. Salsa with the chips was a bit different but ok. Has the chili con carne burrito bowl, which I guess is like Tex Mex? Pretty good, but again, not really authentic Mexican. It's decent Americanized Mexican/Tex Mex.
