Maybe I'm too used to Mexican food on the Westcoast, but the burrito I was served was so underwhelming that I am afraid this is not incident. Maybe it is not just this restaurant, because I have eaten at another Mexican restaurant around here and the result was the same. Even the salsa tasted as if it came from a jar. The people are nice though and they have a nice deal for kids on Monday and Tuesday, where beans and rice and a quesadilla only set you back $4. The outdoor area is super cute, especially in the back. While it appears to be a restaurant, it doesn't seem as if the food is cooked. It seems like it's a fast food place. Right after we ordered, it came out 3 minutes later. Seems like it was microwaved or something because there were a decent amount of people there. I took a few bites of my wrap and had to stop. It was just too soggy and saturated with who knows what. My wife said her fish tacos were ok, but by my horrified reaction, we just wanted to get out of there. We won't be returning. I love Tinga's so much, it's so family friendly and perfect for dinner with friends. Their waitstaff are very interactive and pleasant. My go-to order is a cheese quesadilla and strawberry Jarrito. Their quesadillas are amazing, it's such a simple dish, but their's is the best I've ever had. Their Jarrito's are so good and refreshing, in my opinion the strawberry Jarrito. What an accommodating, welcoming, fun, and delicious experience I've had with my friends at Tinga! Although we arrived pretty close to closing, we did not at all feel rushed. Our waiter was very friendly, personable, and made extra efforts to make sure we're taken care of. And...! When the staff learned that I have a birthday the next day, they threw us a spontaneous fiesta with singing and oversized sombrero and brownie dish! Nice little spot for Mexican food. I had been to the Westfield and Millburn locations in the past but this was my first time at the Montclair location. I ordered the Tinga Chicken Burrito which was stuffed with rice, black beans, and chicken. You had the option to add guacamole inside or outside of your burrito too which was nice. I have got to get acquainted with food places in the Montclair area now that I am here. What better way to do so then with co-workers who know area. They took me to Tinga Taqueria a few weeks ago. This place is very warm, cozy and with tight seating arrangement (if packed). It was okay with me since there were very little people having lunch the day we went. We shared $5.25 8oz guac portion. They order their 8" bar size burritos that came with salad and I had the 12" Sautéed Spinach Veggie burrito (fresh spinach, sautéed with garlic and onions in a spinach tortilla) and took home the BBQ Chicken burrito (Hickory-smoked chicken simmered in our tangy BBQ sauce in a tomato tortilla) for dinner that night. I could not believe the portion sizes of an 8" and the price ranged anywhere from $5.00 - $8.99 and the 12" $6.99 - $12.45 all depending on the type of burrito you order. I enjoyed the spinach burrito at the restaurant but when I ate the BBQ chicken burrito at home, I really fell in deep like with this one. That was one of the burritos the waiter recommended along with the BBQ Pork burrito. I am glad he suggested the BBQ chicken because it's now my favorite. For my check list: Cleanness - check Service - check Price - check, check Location - maybe hard to find a street parking but - check I am definitely going back to try other food selection when I can. read more

If you want flavorful food and friendly service, go somewhere else. My girlfriend and I both got burritos and shared a guacamole. Everything tasted exactly the same - like nothing. It was all bland. To top it off, the customer service wasn't the best. They made us both feel like they just wanted to go home and were not friendly at all. Not coming back here. Promptly greeted and seated upon entry. Table chips and salsa were immediately served, unfortunately the chips were not warmed (c'mon even Chevys does this). The chips were nicely salted very lightly, the salsa was fresh and had the perfect amount of spiciness. The menu seemed extensive and offered many choices to my liking. I narrowed it down to two choices and since I was sure to mention I was very hungry, the waiter recommended I go with the "Fajita in a burrito". I had mine with chicken but you have the choice of steak or shrimp as well. When the food arrived fairly quickly I was happily shocked by how large my burrito was. Additionally, I was not so happily shocked to see, what appeared to be prepackaged, plastic containers of guac and green tomatillo served planted directly in my rice. The portions of jalapeño and onions were skimpy and as mentioned before I was starved so I did not bother to wait for the waiter to return and ask for more. Upon cutting into my packed burrito it oozed out quite a bit of water, assumingly from the lettuce and tomato. It was stuffed with good portions of grilled chicken and tasty sautéed green peppers. Paired with an ice cold mango Jarritos Mexican soda the meal was satisfying. Overall, the service was excellent, prices very fair, and the meal wasn't impressive but served its purpose as I came hungry and left stuffed feeling just like the burrito I ate. read more

I really don't know why this is rated at 3 stars! I love coming here to eat or even doing take out! Its a small place but the atmosphere, music and food is authentic as it gets. Before you order your food they start off by giving you chips and salsa and I believe it's byob as well. My go to is definitely the 12in chicken burrito that comes with a side of sour cream and salsa and it's for sure filling! I love this place for a couple reasons (both their Montclair and Millburn locations): 1) The atmosphere is super comfortable and has just enough flare without being tacky. 2) They accommodate vegan diets (even more so at the Millburn location where they have vegan sour cream!). I also love how the Millburn location has the option to "bar size" your burrito - meaning they use an 8" tortilla instead of 12" and you get a small side salad, too. It's the perfect size for me, however, my husband still gets the regular sized burrito, plus we usually share an appetizer (try the avocado fritas!). The service is always great and so is the food. Tinga has been a staple for me for at least 15 years now, ever since college. The Blackened Fish Tacos are what I usually get, but I had to make it a point to try other items on the menu and risk them not being as good, and have never gone wrong doing so. They bring you complimentary chips and salsa when you sit down. The salsa is bland, and doesn't taste that fresh. It needed a 'kick.' The hot sauces on the table certainly provided that kick. Both are habanero and super spicy. Literally the only difference is one is green and the other is red. We got the BBQ chicken burrito and BBQ Baby Back Pork rib burrito. Both delish and certainly large enough. Another plus of this place is that you can substitute wheat wrap and tofu sour cream for no charge. The beef tacos are delicious, and the pico de gallo on top is super fresh. The chicken tacos are just okay - not a whole lot of flavor and the chicken was a bit dry. The black beans and rice that the tacos come with are tasty, as are the complimentary chips and salsa. Servings are generous and service is friendly. It's a good place for a quick, cheap eat. Service was very quick which was solid since we were in a hurry when we came. I ordered the chicken tacos (2) and my friend ordered the veggie ones. The tacos come double wrapped (soft inside a hard shell) which I never saw before. The tacos itself were pretty bland but the hot sauce they have on the table is really good and actually spicy. By far, the WORST Mexican food I have ever had. I am not a picky person at all but this place was just so bad that I almost feel obligated to warn other people about it. I knew this place would not be authentic Mexican, and I didn't mind that at all, I just wanted some good food. My wife and I both ordered 12" burritos, I got the chicken and she got the steak. My chicken was so dry... SO DRY... you know when you eat really dry chicken and it just turns into this chicken paste in your mouth, yeah, that's how dry it was. On top of that, it had absolutely no flavor. The rice was tasteless and because of the beans I did not finish the burrito, at some point the beans tasted like they were almost rancid. My wife was just as disappointed with her food, her steak was tough and chewy and the rice and beans were just as bad in her burrito. The one thing that was good from this place was their cheese quesadilla and the only reason it was good was because they didn't make the cheese or else I'm sure that would've had no flavor either. Why anyone would go here is beyond me when there is incredible authentic Mexican less than ten minutes away right off the parkway. You're better off going to Baja Fresh or Chipotle. Went there on a Sunday night - about an hour before they close. A few tables were still filled and we got the most annoyed look from the waitstaff. I ordered the steak burrito and it was so plain and flavorless, I could've made a better burrito with leftovers in my fridge.
