After our family's longtime favorite local Chinese spot closed, we spent a while trying to find a replacement that could satisfy our regular takeout cravings. We've since settled on Tin's House in Paramus. It's nothing fancy, but it's become a reliable option when we want classic Chinese takeout. The food is pretty standard American-Chinese, but one thing we've noticed is that it isn't nearly as greasy as a lot of other places. The shrimp toast is lighter than most versions we've had, and the boneless spare ribs always hit the spot. Because I have a gluten allergy, ordering Chinese food can sometimes be tricky. I usually stick to the diet specials, like the steamed chicken and broccoli, since they come steamed and I don't have to worry as much about cross-contamination. I also really appreciate that they offer gluten-free soy sauce, which isn't something every takeout spot provides. This is definitely more of a takeout spot than a dine-in restaurant. There are only a few seats inside, and the space itself is pretty plain and a bit dated rather than new or modern. That said, we usually prefer to bring our Chinese food home anyway, so it hasn't been an issue for us. I typically call my order in ahead of time and pick it up, and the food is usually ready pretty quickly. They also package everything well for takeout. Portions are generous too--especially the rice. You'll probably end up with more than you really need. It's located in a strip mall, so parking is easy and convenient. I do wish it were a little cheaper, but the pricing is probably pretty standard for Chinese takeout these days. The lunch specials definitely help make it a better value. Overall, nothing super fancy here, but if you're craving dependable Chinese takeout that isn't overly greasy, Tin's House does the job. Pretty much your average Americanized Chinese food takeout spot ... and when I say takeout, I mean it literally, as there are NO tables or chairs in here at all, so take that food that you ordered here home. Located on a super small strip mall on E. Ridgewood Ave, Tin's is pretty much what your standard local American Chinese food fare. The menu here is almost a replica of every single spot that serves this type of food - you've got your chicken/beef/shrimp with broccoli or mixed vegetables, hot and sour soups, egg drop soups, fried dumplings, etc., etc., etc. and a wholeeeee slew of other dishes that are all too familiar if you've been to a restaurant like this. On a random weekday evening, we decided to place 2 small orders of Chicken with Mixed Vegetables and Beef with Garlic Sauce along with 2 small soups - Hot & Sour and Egg Drop. Like I said, food was as stereotypical as it gets for these Americanized Chinese restaurants. They hit the spot, especially my food guilty pleasure. The orders of Chicken with Mixed Vegetables and Beef with Garlic Sauce were good for what they were - tender meats, decent amount of veggies and enough sauce to blanket your small container of white or brown rice. The Beef with Garlic Sauce DID have a bit more spice and spicy flakes than I'm used to seeing. As for the soups, they WERE a bit on the thick side. The flavors were solid, but the soups could have used a bit more liquid to thin it out. Overall, not going to be anything you would write home about and spread the word about being the most fantastic food ever, but if you're looking to satisfy your hunger for a reasonable price, this is one of those spots that will do just that, especially if you're craving it. read more

I ordered two lunch specials for me and my husband last week. I walked in and ordered in person. The woman behind the counter was friendly and the food came out quick. About the food - My husband liked his order of eggplant in garlic sauce and I liked my kung pao chicken. The friend chicken wings are good here too. Based on my experience alone, I would give 3.5 stars. I had a good experience and was happy to find a Chinese food spot so close to work... BUT then I started looking through other Yelpers photos and saw the one from Wendy D from last August (Aug 2023) that unfortunately I cannot UN-see... I want to be fair, but I'm not sure if I can recommend Tins to others now. Maybe that pic was a one-off because Tins appeared to have a steady stream of customers coming in for pick up while I was waiting, but... that photo.... Unfortunately we have been coming here for a number of months as our other restaurant closed. This is our 10th+ time and every single time our order has been wrong. Today they gave a completely different dish than what was ordered. The unfortunate part is they are not friendly in resolving nor responsive to delivering the correct dish and worst, everything is getting cold while we wait. Things happen and we understand that, but no one single time did we get the order we placed. In the past the mistakes were able to be overlooked and we were able to eat but today giving a completely different item was the reason for the review. There are new restaurants opening that will hopefully provide better service and be nicer than Tins. read more

Today I called to ask why I wasn't told about about a $2 delivery fee when they never charged me that before and I usually give a $5 tip anyhow. For a $20 or $25 order, I think I am over-tipping in the first place but when I called to ask why they are doing this, I wasn't even allowed to speak by a man named Chin or Jim, who got upset and wouldn't let me speak. This guy is Very nasty, and kept saying that Uber and DoorDash and other companies charge a lot more... But that isn't the point because this is their own in-house delivery guy. The food tastes ok. If you go in with very basic expectations, you'll be pleased. However, my most recent visit is likely my last. Although I placed my order face-to-face in person, I had to repeat it several times. And the order was only three items in total. Unfortunately, even with such a small order, wonton soup wasn't in the bag when I got home. Of course, I paid for it. Our order of mu shu chicken was served with tortillas. There is no mistaking that we received burrito-size tortillas rather than the thin pancake that's supposed to accompany this dish. The fish tank in the customer waiting/dining area is filthy. I'm not a fish tank expert, but I would estimate the water or tank hasn't been cleaned in over a year. It makes you think of what goes on here that you can't see. I have lived in Paramus for my 27 years of existence and this has always been my go to Chinese food place. My whole family enjoys the food they offer and we frequent here about once every two weeks. I have experienced both pick up and delivery and both are fast and efficient providing me with piping hot food. They have really great prices on lunch specials and combination platters for dinner. I tend to order the sesame chicken and the general tso's while my mom & grandma go for the shrimp chow mein. The chicken is always nice and crunchy and not soggy like some other places you may go and all white meat! The lunch special comes with white rice or pork fried rice and an egg roll or can of soda. They also have really good lo mein and sweet and sour chicken. I have tried a few of their appetizers like their boneless spareribs and their crab ragoon is always one of my favorites. Over all this is your basic Chinese cuisine for a decent price but with a lot of great value. I usually can only eat half of either special whether it be lunch or dinner. read more

I get nervous when I hear of a place from colleagues, pull up my phone, look at the Yelp app and then see that it has less than 3 stars. I definitely read through a lot of what people have to say and then figure it out on my own. Odds are I'll probably try it because we're all unique individuals that have our own thought processes and ideas, and likes/dislikes for food. It started with a copy of the menu I found at work. I saw on it things I never saw at a few of the other places I go to. I figured try those items instead because I know what the usual stuff is. I ordered scallion pancakes, dumplings (because I'm always on the hunt for good dumplings), and subgum wonton. Scallion pancakes are delicious, spot on, not too undercooked and not burnt all to crap. The dumplings are more like steamed wontons. They aren't the usual doughy ones that you find. I don't mind the doughy ones but this was an interesting change. They also don't fill you up quite like the other ones do. A nice note is that they also offer them in chicken! Then on to the main course. I haven't seen subgum wonton in years!! It was absolutely delicious. There was a subsequent visit for sesame chicken and what I admire about their food is that they don't oversauce things or drown the food. Another nice touch was one of the people that worked there actually talked to me while my order was waiting to come out. You don't really get that when you go to other places. I grew up in Paramus and I remember hearing bad things about Tins House. Therefore, I never ordered food from them. However, I was craving Chinese food one day and it was the closest place to my house. I'm glad I finally tried it (after 12 years) because I love it! I ordered the sesame chicken combination plate (comes with pork fried rice and choice of one appetizer from the combo app. choices). I ordered the crab rangoon and they gave me 2 pieces. It was fried perfectly and it arrived hot. The sesame chicken was probably one of the best I've tried. The chicken was all white meat and it was actually crispy. I hate when sesame and general tso's chicken is soggy. The portion was very reasonable and I only ate half of it. The rice was just okay (generic yellow rice). However, the pork was delicious and flavorful. I wish this place got better reviews because I was completely satisfied with my meal. Compared to the Chinese food take-out I find near Rutgers, Tins House is excellent. It took about 10 minutes for my food to arrive but then again, I live just a few blocks away. You usually can't go wrong with that. The chicken was basically fried batter with a small piece of chicken in it. Also, the 2 pieces of broccoli did not look too swell. This is probably the most stingy Chinese food restaurant I've been to in regards to meat and vegetables. It came with your standard fried rice - which was basically yellow rice tossed in oil. I have worked in this area for over 5 years and have ate at this restaurant more than a few times between my lunch breaks and commutes to work. Let me start off by saying, the people are very nice. Anytime I call and make an order over the phone, I never feel like I am being "rushed" off the phone, like most other Chinese spots. I also like the fact that they deliver to my job. I have also dined in a few times as well and I really like the pink cushiony chairs they have at the bar. Any restaurant, that offers bar stools with backrest is a major plus. You can go from eating uncomfortable to actually enjoying your meal. Another added plus, is all their chicken is REAL. No rat meat chicken. Always, Thankful for that one. Here is where their problem lies: Price vs Portion. As Americans, we know how much food you get on a Chinese lunch plate. Your not fooling anybody by cutting your portion sizes. Your competition has the formula figured out. Your losing business by not meeting expectations, which cost you more money in the long run. Furthermore, several of my co-workers have stopped ordering from your restaurant for this very reason. It would be in your best interest to listen to your customers to correct this issue. People normally do not order from Chinese takeouts with high expectation. The food tends to be inexpensive and fills up your stomach because your too lazy to go somewhere better. But this place has to be among the bottom of the takeouts. I ordered a large beef fried rice on a snowy day looking to refill quick so I can get on with my day, but oh man was I in for a surprise. I ended up with a box of white rice with a few slices of beef and signs of chopped tiny onions. After digging for a couple of mins I was left with a box of plain tasteless white rice. Are you freaking kidding me! Please keep in mind this is not how Chinese ppl normally do fried rice. This was a disgrace, a rip off, and I found it insulting. Where were the eggs? Scallions? Have we became this cheap to get by and cheating majority of the population because they don't know better? Fujianese work their tails off operating take-outs but joints like this will give bad names to the rest. When I called back and complained, they did acknowledge but felt nothing wrong doing it. If there's a problem with your food, they are more than nice to fix the problem. The portions are large for dinner. I usually save for lunch the next day. They have a fish tank that was half empty and not very clean.(1 Star) Atmosphere is friendly and service is prompt(4 stars) I ordered the sesame chicken lunch special. Chicken was fresh.
