Went to Truly Sichuan for a late lunch on Father's Day. It's a casual restaurant, the staff was able to seat us quickly. My family is a big fan of Sichuan cuisine, so we ordered a lot. For appetizers we got the spicy pork soup dumplings, the crab roe soup dumplings, dan dan noodles, and chongqing noodles. For the baby, we got the shrimp lo mein, which interestingly used udon noodles. I'd pass on the majority of these appetizers my next visit, but they weren't bad, just not the best. For entrees, we got the crispy fish dry pot, shredded beef w. hot green pepper, crispy volcano tofu, braised fish w. chili sauce, and sichuan lamb. My favorites were the crispy fish dry pot and braised fish with chili sauce. Portion sizes for the price are huge. I would definitely return. read more

Very good classic Sichuan style. Chicken with garlic sauce was more spicy than I expected.

I stayed on the appetizer side the first time, opting for cucumber with garlic and the mysterious Spicy Arctic Bay, which turned out to be a delightfully oceanic surf clam. For the second visit I got the excellent mapo tofu. This is fiery for sure but the heat is more well-rounded than usual, and there was just the right ratio of tofu, sauce and vegetables. It would take decades to get to everything on this menu but I'll try. read more

Didn't have high expectations for Truly Sichuan, but this restaurant's mix of Sichuan and Chinese food was surprisingly decent. We strolled in on a beautiful Friday evening at 5:45 and the restaurant was fairly empty as you can imagine before 6pm, but, once again, to my surprise it got quite busy by the time we left. I didn't expect this restaurant to be extremely popular in Ridgewood, but the fact that their menu serves Americanized Chinese food was a smart move because I felt a majority of the customers were ordering EXACTLY THAT. WE, on the other hand, tried to steer clear of the Americanized Chinese food and tried to order a few of their more popular entrees here. First, we ordered the Pork Soup Dumplings and Scallion Pancake to start. Oddly, there were only 5 pieces in the order of soup dumplings for $13. Typically at restaurants, at least 6 are served in an order and, in some cases, even 8! 5 seemed stingy. Also, quite steep for just 5 pieces, but, nevertheless the quality was better than I would have thought. The Scallion Pancake was OK. Nothing spectacular, but it was a nice, simple appetizer. For entrees, we got the Chicken w. Bok Choy (mostly for our kids) and then went all out by ordering the Truly Sichuan Mala Hot Pot / Spicy Pot and Crispy Duck Special. The Sichuan Pot was hugeee and had lots and lots of stuff in there - chicken, veggies, lots of lotus root, bean sprouts and shrimp. As you can imagine, the pot was red all over with spices and we were not ready for it AT ALLLL. The lotus roots actually numbed our mouth after we ate them! They weren't very spicy, but something in the ingredients completely numbed us. It was an extremely strange feeling and sensation and made the dining experience a bit uncomfortable, but like the troopers that we were, we ATE ON! My wife loved the pot and the food in it, but I thought it was just OK. The Crispy Duck was quite disappointing for me - dry, not very big and did not look appetizing at all. It was sadly cut up and plopped on top of lettuce. I definitely was not a fan for $25. As for the Chicken w Bok Choy, it was good, but, once again, not the greatest dish you'll ever have, but it was solid. Could the food have been better? Definitely. Could it have been worse? Yes, I didn't have high expectations. But, it came out to be decent and edible, which was more than I could have imagined. I didn't think we were going to order the Sichuan Pot or Crispy Duck, which were quite pricey. Would we come back? Ehhhhh. One time was good though. read more

Went for a weekend lunch after a long time. We arrived exactly at noon when they open, whole place was empty. The condition of the restaurant was little underwhelming, our table was so wobbly we had shove few napkins and chopsticks under it to stabilize it. The menu looked the same from before. We ordered few of our favorite dishes. Crispy duck was so good with the duck sauce. The fish fillet over spicy soup was favorite dish of the night for e. It had the citrus zest and kick of the Sichuan spice. Soup crab dumplings were super tasty as well. Overall it was a wonderful meal for the whole family. It had been a while since our last taste of Truly Sichuan, and I was really craving Chinese food, so we decided to place a takeout order. Like on our last experience, we completely adored the Singapore Rice Noodles, which were in a dry curry sauce. The thin noodles were mixed with shredded pork loin, shrimp, white meat chicken, and eggs. The light hint of spice made the dish a real winner. While this was on the more arid side, all of our other dishes were very saucy. First, there was the Chicken and Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, which was great, but not very garlicky. In fact, the sauce was not substantially different from the general brown sauce on the Sauteed Chicken with Broccoli. Another similarity was that both dishes had tender chicken and fresh vegetables. Lastly, the Shrimp Lo Mein unconventionally used heavier Udon noodles and had a thicker brown sauce than we had expected. However, it was still a very delicious version of the popular meal. Truly Sichuan provided one of the best Chinese experiences in the area. While we enjoyed everything, I can say for certain that we will get the Singapore Rice Noodles again. Authentic and legitimate Chinese food. As I mentioned in some of my other reviews, there are a few different types of Chinese restaurants in Northern Jersey. There are Americanized Chinese takeout places. These places are usually small and primarily takeout. Their menus are a white tri-fold with red text. They offer orange chicken, kung pao chicken and beef with broccoli. And sometimes sushi, which isn't even Chinese. There are Korean style Chinese places. They are in Palisades Park or Fort Lee, run by Koreans, speak Korean to you, and offer jajangmun (noodles with a meat sauce). Then there are places like Truly Sichuan. They offer real Chinese food. The place is not perfect - the scallion pancake was overdone, the soup dumplings had thick skin. But overall the food has authentic tastes and spices, and everyone enjoyed it. If the restaurant was a little closer to us, we would definitely come back a lot. read more

The restaurant offers 4-5 dollars for a food picture, which is the red flag I ignored. The carrier got the order less than 9 minutes after we placed the order; that is a huge concern. When the food got delivered, we noticed: 1. Pork danda noodles are made with rice noodles, which is a big mistake!! It's supposed to be with minced pork and salted vegetables, but barely any pork. 2. Steamed Chicken dumplings were delicous. Classic preparation with a thin outer dough and a good amount of tasty stuffing. Pork Buns equally delicous. Thick outer dough with a generous amount of tasty minced pork stuffing. General Tso's Chicken was another classically prepared meal with very tender chicken and a very generous portion. I think enough for 2 people. Dan Dan Noodles was the only meal I would give a ding to. I found it way too oily and damn if I could find any minced pork. But it did have a nice flavor. Our female server was so very sweet and accommodating. Double checked our order and answered all of our questions. We went on a cold Thursday night and they weren't busy. Happy to have a local Sichuan spot! The wontons in chili oil are banging and a must have every time. My family has eaten tons of wontons, and even the toughest critic admitted these were legit. Additional fan favorites are the dan dan noodles, Chinese eggplant in garlic sauce, and crispy fish with crispy onion. Whereas the receipt still has further suggestions for gratuity. So you face the awkward predicament of assuming the waitstaff "knows" that their gratuity is part of the 20%, or wondering whether you'll get chased after you leave the restaurant on the basis of not tipping beyond the service fee percentage. Restaurant should just raise menu prices (which were already a bit on the high side), if the POV is that the staff isn't being paid enough with current pricing. read more

Good sign The pork and soup taste was very flavorful and they came piping hot. The beef chow fun texture was spot on, dry and had that wok smoke taste, but could have used a tad more smokiness to really feel like you're in Chinatown. A little on the pricier side but you are in Ridgewood so it is comparable. A pot of green tea is $6 but they refill the water so it was nice to share the tea. We started with cold sesame noodles, which had way too much garlic. way to much my dining companion had chicken chow fun which had absolutely no flavor and thin slimy chicken. Myself I had general Taos tofu, which lacked sauce. there were four tables that left when we got there and the tables were filled with dirty dishes, which were still on the table as I walked out. Clean Up!!! After taking a look at what a mess this place was i decides to pass on using the bathroom. the service, barely any. we split the check in half 50/50 yet they charges one of us 50% and the other 100%. I got the mapo tofu and shredded pork w garlic sauce. Both dishes were so flavorful and delicious. The mapo tofu was spicy and the sauce paired so well with the rice. The shredded pork had a kick to it as well and I loved the crunch of the veggies. I did feel the portion sizes were a bit smaller than I would have liked, especially when it came to the amount of rice that was provided. For a mapo tofu dish that is so perfectly saucey, I would have loved more rice. Other than that, the quality of the food here was excellent. My wife and I ordered Kang Pao chicken and beef chow fun and we are so disappointed with taste,,color, and texture of beef that was so chewy that we actually wondered if it was beef. The kang pao chicken was bits of fried dough. I didn't taste any real chicken either. The vegetables were all the same brown color and texture. The oily after taste leaves your mouth with greasy film that didn't taste too good. I had to drink coffee at home to wash out the icky taste. Big disappointment for the price and location. read more

I have found a new fav Sichuan Chinese spot in NJ in this pandemic. So far I used to go to the city to satisfy my Sichuan food cravings but now Truly Sichuan has everything I need and more. This rating is only for the two items I have tried so far which is Mapo tofu and bokchoy with garlic. I intend to visit this place again for their Dan Dan noodles. In terms of food it was freshly made with oil in proportion not too much and not too less just right. I loved the bok choy with garlic so much and I think no place in the city can beat Truly Sichuan's. The Mapo tofu was good too but not great as I didn't feel that numbing feeling after having a few bites which is true for most of the places in the city. I think they did not put the Sichuan peppercorns or used a different kind? I liked Mapo tofu but it doesn't compare to the one I have in the city. Highly recommend this dish. Chicken and Broccoli- typical staple for people who aren't open to exploring other dishes (like my husband..haah!). Really not much to say about this dish since it's literally chick and broccoli and it can be very hard to mess this up. Flavoring was good, rice was fresh, and had leftovers. Leftovers tasted just as good as it was fresh with a good amount of both chicken and broccoli I'd recommend this place if you're in the area looking for some "authentic" Sichuan dishes. The dan dan noodles and steamed pork dumplings with chili were spicy but good - I think the mapo tofu ruined my tastebuds that night and the spice lingered as I moved between items. A restaurant I dream about daily. I came here about a year ago missing authentic, home style Chinese food. There's a dish called Xiang Gan Rou Si (Shredded Pork and Bean Curd) my dad was craving that wasn't on the menu. We casually mentioned it to the hostess, and the chef offered and specially made the dish for us. NEVER IN THE WORLD HAD I HAD SUCH AN AMAZING BEAN CURD DISH EVEN IN CHINA OR MADE BY THE HOMEBRED MAINLAND CITIZENS. I HAVE EATEN IN VILLAGES AND IN THE HOMES OF AUTHENTIC CHEFS, AND YET THE BEST DISH IVE EVER HAD IS IN NEW JERSEY?! The chef was so kind enough to even tell us what ingredients he put in it and how to make it. I moved away from the New England states, and if I had one wish I would move this restaurant and this chef away with me. 10/10 I yearn to come here again. read more

Lovely experience here. Truly Sichuan offers authentic Chinese food! We were very impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the food. Even their menus were really cool. We highly recommend the Soup Dumplings appetizer! It was so good and two orders of it could honestly be a meal of its own. They really lived up to all their achievements. They weren't stingy about their portions and they don't hold back on their flavors either! Great place to indulge on spicy, garlicky, authentic Chinese dishes. This place is absolutely above and beyond "Chinese" food we're all familiar with all over the US. I'd have to disagree with anyone who says it's the same as typical Chinese take-out. It's far from it! The staff was also super accommodating and the lady who we assume is the owner herself was very welcoming and gave us some informative tidbits about New Jersey after finding out we weren't local to the state.
