This was a return visit that was much overdue. If you don't know about the Benedictine Brewery and…read moreyou love artfully hand crafted beer? You need to become acquainted. The monks of the Mount Angel Benedictine Abbey are practicing a centuries old tradition... As part of their daily observation of life, they brew beer. Let me tell you it is absolutely outstanding. The grounds are breathtaking, on a little hillside outside of Mount Angel, just under an hour south Portland. I highly recommend that you take one of the more scenic drives instead of just blasting down I-5, but you do you. It's not a restaurant per se. But there are snacks. And there is a large selection of beer. My partner and I already knew that we had no idea what we wanted because we want everything and that would make driving home extremely difficult. So we opted for the only logical choice: the sampler Their sampler boards come with either four or five slots, and they provide a 4 ounce pour into the sampler glass. We each got a five spot board, and two additional drinking glasses so that we could pour splits, and were thus able to sample 10 of the brews on tap. We also decided that snacks were in order so we got the spinach, artichoke dip, times two. You order at the counter and when your order is prepared, you are called and can pick it up. It's a very simple set up, harkening back to a simpler time in many ways. Some of the taps vary seasonally. Some of them are occasionally just out. I can't tell you what you're going to find. But I can tell you if the Hairshirt, the Half Cloak, and the Little Tyrant are on tap? You definitely want to sample those. This is not typical mid-grade Portland IPA... These are exceptional brews across a variety of styles Highly recommended! I go down every time I get a chance and suggest that you might want to consider that as well

I'll preface my review with this: I'm a NERDY NERD, especially when it comes to breweries! So, to…read moremy total joy, stumbling across this brewery on our Oregon trip was a TREAT! We went first to the abbey, just to walk (gorgeous view), where we were informed of the attached brewery. As a beer girly, a Jesus freak, and a traveler who's been to other monk-run breweries around the world, I knew that we had to check this place out! The beer was good. It's not the best you'll ever have, but definitely pretty good! The service was great two - the bartenders were working hard to serve people and close up shop once it hit the time. They have to-go cold and non-cold options, as well as other merch available for sale. The space is gorgeous, and I love that it utilized community-raising initiatives to build out the frame. Definitely take time to read the posters, the documents on the site, and watch the video about the community raising!

But it feels much more satisfying, rewarding and accomplishing as it obviously would by trying a beer from a brewery that I have been wanting to try... which leads us to one of my latest brewery experiences which is Silver Falls Brewery. Steve and I had one beer from this brewery and we liked it pretty well. We got the Oregon Sunshine Hazy IPA which was a better IPA drinking session than on previous occasions. In short it was a nice, refreshing one that hit the spot nicely. The elements in the flavors to look for are citrus, a juicy quality and a hoppiness presence. This IPA despite being a hazy also was bright in flavor as well as hue. A very refreshing IPA and I am so very glad I got to try a beer from Silver Falls Brewery!

For example, there aren't many places in Silverton where diners can order étouffée, gumbo or jambalaya. Well, look no further as one of SFB's "bowl" dishes rotates between these three Cajun favorites. In addition, the menu also offers a number of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options for guests looking for something to suit their dietary needs. What I love most about Silver Falls Brewery is the many seating options. The restuarant has balcony seating, as well as an outdoor courtyard with a fair number of tables. In addition, the interior dining room has several large family-style tables that can accomodate large groups. This establishment does a fair amount of business during the spring and summer months when tourist activity is heavy, yet they somehow manage to swiftly seat, serve, and care for guests without compromising on service. The drinks are great, service comes with a smile, and I'm here for supporting local businesses that always shine brightly.

There are not a lot of other dining options in the area, so Fireside is a pretty easy choice. The food is just OK. Definitely stuff that is mass-produced and heated on-site. Prices are mercifully low, so one doesn't feel as though they've been ripped off. There is a big selection of non-alcoholic beverages, which I appreciated. The real standout here was the friendliness of the staff. Everybody I interacted with was very friendly and helpful. There was a band playing during my visit, and they seemed to be as "bar band" as bar bands get. I was the only person who applauded after each song, which was weird to me. I'd have hoped that staff, at least, would have applauded as well.

In the last couple of visits, though, it's different. My past history here prevents me from giving it a 2-star review. I know there has been a management change, and it shows. Some of my favorite staff have departed, seeking greener pastures. The reason for this review now is my most recent purchase ... a $17 glass of Pudding River Pinot Gris. When I found out the price as I cashed out, I felt robbed. I can drive less than 9 miles away and buy a whole bottle for $25. My previous glass of wine that evening was an $8 chardonnay from another local winery. I figured the Pinot Gris couldn't be much more than the Chard, especially one from Pudding River, which I've personally visited so I know their bottle prices. So, before you buy anything at the Fireside Lounge, ask the price. Don't be surprised (aka robbed) as I was.

I'd never seen tomatoes on a club before but it was good. They had a variety of drinks but we stuck to tea and soda as it was a work day. This looks like a great place for cocktails. Even when I tried to pay the second round, she told the bartender not to accept my payment. haha Even if I had paid, I would still like this place and their cocktails. They have a large list of cocktails, mocktails and other non-alcoholic beverages, as well as beer and wine. They can make all the traditional cocktails. A regular told me the manhattan is top notch, but the cherries aren't the best he's seen. Cherry seemed alright to me. They also have several house cocktails and a few specials to choose from. Between us 4, we tried several different cocktails. We even tried the house cocktail designed for the bitterest of liqueurs, Jeppson's Malört. All were deemed tasty by all! They offer several food items from a full kitchen, including appetizers, sandwiches, salads, breakfast, and dinner. They even have veggie burger, gluten free crackers, and gluten free (GF) fried chicken! ! ! Free parking on the street.
