This was a return visit that was much overdue. If you don't know about the Benedictine Brewery and…read moreyou love artfully hand crafted beer? You need to become acquainted. The monks of the Mount Angel Benedictine Abbey are practicing a centuries old tradition... As part of their daily observation of life, they brew beer. Let me tell you it is absolutely outstanding. The grounds are breathtaking, on a little hillside outside of Mount Angel, just under an hour south Portland. I highly recommend that you take one of the more scenic drives instead of just blasting down I-5, but you do you. It's not a restaurant per se. But there are snacks. And there is a large selection of beer. My partner and I already knew that we had no idea what we wanted because we want everything and that would make driving home extremely difficult. So we opted for the only logical choice: the sampler Their sampler boards come with either four or five slots, and they provide a 4 ounce pour into the sampler glass. We each got a five spot board, and two additional drinking glasses so that we could pour splits, and were thus able to sample 10 of the brews on tap. We also decided that snacks were in order so we got the spinach, artichoke dip, times two. You order at the counter and when your order is prepared, you are called and can pick it up. It's a very simple set up, harkening back to a simpler time in many ways. Some of the taps vary seasonally. Some of them are occasionally just out. I can't tell you what you're going to find. But I can tell you if the Hairshirt, the Half Cloak, and the Little Tyrant are on tap? You definitely want to sample those. This is not typical mid-grade Portland IPA... These are exceptional brews across a variety of styles Highly recommended! I go down every time I get a chance and suggest that you might want to consider that as well

There are not a lot of other dining options in the area, so Fireside is a pretty easy choice. The food is just OK. Definitely stuff that is mass-produced and heated on-site. Prices are mercifully low, so one doesn't feel as though they've been ripped off. There is a big selection of non-alcoholic beverages, which I appreciated. The real standout here was the friendliness of the staff. Everybody I interacted with was very friendly and helpful. There was a band playing during my visit, and they seemed to be as "bar band" as bar bands get. I was the only person who applauded after each song, which was weird to me. I'd have hoped that staff, at least, would have applauded as well.

Over the last few months, I've stopped in for a beverage and sometimes an appetizer. The fireplace…read moreis cozy and the atmosphere comfortable and live music nightly. In the last couple of visits, though, it's different. My past history here prevents me from giving it a 2-star review. I know there has been a management change, and it shows. Some of my favorite staff have departed, seeking greener pastures. The reason for this review now is my most recent purchase ... a $17 glass of Pudding River Pinot Gris. When I found out the price as I cashed out, I felt robbed. I can drive less than 9 miles away and buy a whole bottle for $25. My previous glass of wine that evening was an $8 chardonnay from another local winery. I figured the Pinot Gris couldn't be much more than the Chard, especially one from Pudding River, which I've personally visited so I know their bottle prices. So, before you buy anything at the Fireside Lounge, ask the price. Don't be surprised (aka robbed) as I was.

We got here a bit early on the weekday at 2:50p. They open at three so we waited until they opened. They had some great lunch specials. I had the turkey club with a salad. It was good. I'd never seen tomatoes on a club before but it was good. They had a variety of drinks but we stuck to tea and soda as it was a work day. This looks like a great place for cocktails. Now that I got the bad taste in my mouth from former friends I will definitely be back.

Even when I tried to pay the second round, she told the bartender not to accept my payment. haha Even if I had paid, I would still like this place and their cocktails. It is a nice atmosphere, not too loud, comfortable seating, warm whimsical decorations, friendly service, and clean bathrooms. They have a large list of cocktails, mocktails and other non-alcoholic beverages, as well as beer and wine. They can make all the traditional cocktails. A regular told me the manhattan is top notch, but the cherries aren't the best he's seen. Cherry seemed alright to me. They also have several house cocktails and a few specials to choose from. Between us 4, we tried several different cocktails. We even tried the house cocktail designed for the bitterest of liqueurs, Jeppson's Malört. All were deemed tasty by all! They offer several food items from a full kitchen, including appetizers, sandwiches, salads, breakfast, and dinner. They even have veggie burger, gluten free crackers, and gluten free (GF) fried chicken! ! ! Free parking on the street. No minors allowed, bummer...l'd like it better if kids were allowed, but it's so good it's gets the 5th star. If you choose to give a thumbs-up or not, I hope you found my review helpful!
