The service was incredibly poor. I had to request a refill of my drink from another server and was never given a refill of chips, which is standard in Mexican restaurants. To make matters worse, they couldn't even answer basic questions about food allergies. When the food finally arrived, it was served at different times than the rest of my party and incomplete dishes. To top it off, the food was smothered in a sauce that drowned out every other flavor, making it unappetizing. I have given this place a few chances and will not waste my money there again. read more

We have been wanting to try this place for years . We are so glad we tried it . We went here on a Thursday night . The restaurant is right off a main road in Daybreak & easy to get to . The waiter was super nice & helping explaining the menu . My husband wanted to try the Mole so he brought him out a sample to try . He decided to get the chicken enchilada with Mole . He loved it -he said it's the best Mole he has ever had . The waiter said they go to Mexico for the spices . It was super flavorful with just the right amount of heat . The portion size is big . We heard about this place and the quality of the food so we gave it a try last night. I ordered the chicken fajitas and they were perfectly cooked and very flavorful. My wife and I shared them and loved them. I also got a cup of the Chile verde just to give it a try. Fantastic flavor with most and flavorful pieces of pork. I met Martha, the owner and she was as delightful to speak with and get some history from. They also have locations in Murray and SLC. We were at the Herriman (Daybreak) area. I would like to start off by saying the food was SO YUMMY. The salsa is a solid 9/10 for flavor. The rice was a little bit bland but the beans and burrito were absolutely delicious. Definitely worth coming back to deal with the not so great service... that's the only reason I did not give five stars. So I would like to talk about my experience with the service, when I first arrived I was asked how many and I stated "one", the man then turned around without saying anything and walked away and then points at a table so I walk over and sit down and then he was pretty quick to take my order and the food came out in under ten minutes which was awesome. But then after I got my food I didn't get checked on at all until I was finished eating and had to put my napkin on the table and my credit card and even then I didn't get checked on for probably another ten minutes and at that point I let them know the food was amazing and that I was ready to pay. But overall I will be returning because the food was SO GOOD Highly suggested for the food. read more

I ordered the Chimichanga # 8. The chips and salsa is good, but if you want more, they will charge you for a very small bowl $1.00. Wasn't an issue, but for those price conscientious folks out there, it's an additional charge. I was very hungry, so I ordered my favorite "The Chimichanga", # 8. I was disappointed in the flavor, there was no seasoning in the chicken, so I had to stop eating, before I was full. The manager told me that they have to charge money for the tortillas because the price they pay for tortillas was increased by $4/bag. At the end when I asked for the check, they didn't provide a check, the manager came up to me with his debit card machine, sitting there in front of me as I was entering the tip. This is asinine, patrons should be able to provide a tip without someone hovering over them. The card fortunately didn't compute, and I had cash, so I changed to cash instead of my debit card. I noticed that they did this same thing to the guy across from me in the restaurant. Just hovering over him until he chose a tip and then paid. This is so frustrating, I honestly feel like giving them a 10% tip, because of the hovering, but I only give 20% or higher tips, because the work these folks do is hard. My mom used to be a waitress and I have heard the disaster stories. I will say this, there are so many restaurants available in our area, I will not be back. This was ridiculous, I'm also changing my star rating from 3 to a 2, because of the whole hovering issue. read more

We discovered Tio's while walking through a trendy area in South Jordan with a Farmer's Market in full swing and charming craft booths nearby. Tie-dye, macrame, a guy singing with an acoustic guitar...we never expected to have such a flatly disappointing time at Tio's Mexican Restaurant. The gorgeous smell brought us in but delivered nothing. We were seated immediately as we arrived right when the restaurant opened. I thought the atmosphere was cute and charming, with stringed colored lights, murals, and other Mexican-style decor. It was distinctly trendy, however, with no Mexican mariachi music. It was a bit more mass-audience but the other restaurant-goers were of all ages and had many Spanish speakers having a good time. A child's party was even being set up with balloons and connected tables. It was very sweet. We received the complementary chips and salsa right away. The chips were nothing special - the twice-fried seasoned kind that aren't bad - and the salsa was spicy and unique. It was a smooth sauce rather than a chunky, veggie-laden one. My husband liked it better than I did, but this is a personal preference. You will have much more of your drink while having the salsa. I ordered the El Pollo Guadalajara and my husband asked for the Cuatro. I also ordered a traditional margarita. Right away, we were told that the grill hadn't been fired up yet and that it would take extra time for my meal, which consisted of a blacked chicken breast and a cheese enchilada (with rice and beans). I thought this was weird but we weren't in a hurry. Another of the staff came by soon after and repeated what our server said, but asked if this was ok or if I wanted to order something else. Weird again, but I was fine with waiting. We had more chips and salsa. The margarita was very bright-tasting and fresh but I wonder if there was any alcohol at all because I never felt a thing. The taste was nice but nothing else. For some reason, the lime had a little umbrella in it. Maybe they were sprucing it up a bit. It was my first umbrella margarita. Also, I believe the margarita glass had just come from the dishwasher because it had warmed the drink a bit. When we both got our meals, I was pretty surprised. I had a large, flat, unseasoned chicken breast that looked as if it had been pan-fried and not been on a grill at all. It was a barely light-brown color and, worst of all, tasteless and dry. The rice was awful and had an odd, acrid taste. The enchilada seemed normal, but also had an odd flavor. The cheese reminded me of American cheese and not cheddar- it wasn't good at all. I had a little (to taste) and then stopped eating altogether. My husband had the same problem with his enchilada but he also had a beef taco, which was also tasteless. Sadly, the beef was also, -crunchy- and overcooked and barely filled the shell. The lettuce and tomato were fresh. We did not order a dessert. The staff member who asked us about the chicken grill wait time returned to our table and apologized for our experience. We received a discount because he saw that I did not eat much, especially the chicken. He was very sensitive to how we felt about the meal and I appreciate his efforts toward us. Buyer Beware!! We came here on a Friday night, party of 6. Food was ok. Guacamole had no flavor and neither did the salsa. Service was good until we got the bill. Our server Jorge, came to us with one of those Apple Pay portable machine. He showed my aunt the total, my aunt tapped her card, & then Jorge turned around, & gave himself a 25% tip. My aunt wasn't given the option to add tip herself and thought she didn't leave tip so she started getting cash out to leave tip on the table but my sister told her to look at her receipt to see if the tip was already added. Sure enough it was on there. I wonder how many people leave double tip when the server just chooses the tip for you! That is not good or honest business practice. My husband and I love this place. Their food has so much flavor and the portions are a good size. I get the beef taquitos because the beef is always shredded and cooked to perfection, crispy on the ends. Their beans have a nice white cheese melted on top and they have a wonderful spice to them. My wife's food came out 8 minutes after the rest if the families. We ordered fried ice cream and the first bite was ice crystals, I dumped the ice cream from the shell and underneath was a yellow ice mess of bad ice cream!!! I would normally complain at the time but we were having such a wonderful family time that I didn't want to ruin it by complaining about the food. If your staff can't determine if yellow ice crystals is bad and should not be served then we won't be back. We have a monthly book club. Everyone has a turn to pick a book and restaurant where we review the book and visit with good food and friends. The food was okay, not bad. not the best I've had. But we were blindsided by an apparent Friday night service fee? I had already paid for mine but one of the other women noticed a charge and asked what it was. I am on a budget, so I looked at the menu, so I knew what to expect and the prices were good. What they don't tell you on the website is about the service fee. I went home and looked at my receipt. Which told me I spent $33, and some change and I gave a 20% tip, so it was $44.78 and I thought oh I didn't get a service fee. Which was weird for me not to get one and others did. Oh no, they did. It was NOT ON MY RECEIPT, but they charged me $53.23. total.. Yes I paid $20 extra. Some of that is tip and tax. BUT STILL. That is NOT cool. Maybe they need to up their prized one $dollar per entry, still be a reasonable price but at least you'd know and could tip accordingly. read more

TL;DR - Really bad Friday-night wait time for food and no attempt to communicate upfront or reconcile afterward, showing some really unfortunate mismanagement. I've tried to find a way to share this privately with the restaurant, but there is no email address listed for Tio's or any social media DM capabilities, so I figured it best to share this publicly, to warn other potential patrons. On a recent Friday, my wife and I went to Tio's. We contemplated not going, since it was a weekend and might be busy, but we thought we'd try our luck, and to our surprise, we were seated right away in one of the last tables available in what was a pretty packed restaurant. They brought out chips and took our order promptly. Awesome. Then we waited ... and waited ... and waited. It was honestly close to an entire hour to get our food. We kept laughing (because the only alternative was crying ... we were so hungry) when other patrons around us would get their food before us. The waitress apologized to us by saying she was sorry the food took so long. But there was no explanation given for the why the food took so long. No visit by a manager at the table. No discount offered or gift card or free dessert or anything. The whole night was honestly like a car crash we couldn't look away from. At another point, a waitress spilled a soft drink on a patron at another table, as she was reaching onto the table with one hand, she dropped the soda in her other hand, all down the back of some guy, who hadn't gotten his food yet, and had to wait in soggy, sticky clothes. (I wonder if he got anything more than an apology as well ... I hope so.) The whole experience was so bad, I honestly wondered if we were in some sort of prank show or something. The food was fine. Nothing special. Just your run of the mill American-Mexican food. Definitely not worth waiting an hour for, and definitely not worth dealing with a bunch of frustration and spectacles for. read more

BUT, a few weeks ago, we decided to give it another shot and have already been back three times (and probably going again tonight ) I'm not sure if management changed or if they hired a new chef... but a vast improvement to the food, and the service is always on point. I wanted to like this place so bad but everything I tried was bad. I got the tamales and the beef wasnt seasoned, the sauce they smothered them in was gross. The best part of the meal was the chips and salsa. My brother got the tostada and the chicken on it was disgusting and they hid the lack of beans and meat under a mountain of lettuce. My other brother got the kids quesadilla and it was tiny. Like one tortilla folded in half! Our waiter was trying so hard to do a good job. And was very attentive to us so thats why I'm not giving them 1 star. He did tell us they had the best guacamole in Utah and it was trash. So bad. Me and my girlfriend decided to eat at tios during the car show on soda row. When we got there there was only a few other tables. We ordered pretty quickly and there was only 2 of us in our party. About 10 minutes after we ordered a party of 4 and a party of 10 arrived. We waited for an hour and still had not received our food. And the party of 4 was already done eating and the large party of 10 were already eating. The service here is horrible. My wife was really wanting some tacos and we recently moved into Daybreak and have been wanting to shop local. So we decided to try Tio's. We originally wanted to call in an order. 20 minutes and multiple attempts later, no answer from the staff. We'll just stop by on our way home and order to go. Maybe we'll just dine in. Can't do that either. We stood at the front desk for roughly 20 minutes making eye contact with the waitresses. One even walked past me saying " excuse me" to get the Birthday Sombrero. But she didn't bother to seat us or ask if we're there for DoorDash or anything. There were about 4-5 tables with customers, all had food. 2 tables were empty but had not been cleaned from the previous customers. Unfortunately, due to this absolutely horrible customer service, we decided to leave and don't have a review on the food. Daybreak should look into this establishment. Was very upset with this place. We usually pass by and it has a good group of people inside and i am a huge Mexican style foodie. However, this place was very underwhelming. It could've been because I picked up the order to go and did not eat inside but the food had little to no flavor and the salsa for our appetizer tasted more like tomato soup with chopped onion than salsa. A lot of people frequent and say the food they got was great, so have considered giving it another shot especially since it is only a few minutes from my house and I love the Soda Row area.
