Tio's #9 that i wouldn't finish even if it was free
    Honest R.

the rice tastes like pasta with the excessive tomato paste. their salsa is as watered down as humanly possible. i had a remnant after taste of what smells like a wet dog after eating their shredded beef. i love mexican food but this spot just isnt it. ive been here twice and disappointed both times. everything was just soggy and repulsive, i was picking at my food, and im someone who never does that. take a good look at the meal, and tell me would you eat this and enjoy it?

We heard about this place and the quality of the food so we gave it a try last night. I ordered the chicken fajitas and they were perfectly cooked and very flavorful. My wife and I shared them and loved them. I also got a cup of the Chile verde just to give it a try. Fantastic flavor with most and flavorful pieces of pork. I met Martha, the owner and she was as delightful to speak with and get some history from. They also have locations in Murray and SLC. We were at the Herriman (Daybreak) area. I highly recommend giving this a try.

Time for an update to this review! I've been hesitant to return after previous experiences, but when the craving hit, my family and I took the chance. I'm very glad we did! Service was very attentive and friendly and the food was fantastic.

I would like to start off by saying the food was SO YUMMY. The salsa is a solid 9/10 for flavor. The rice was a little bit bland but the beans and burrito were absolutely delicious. Definitely worth coming back to deal with the not so great service... that's the only reason I did not give five stars. So I would like to talk about my experience with the service, when I first arrived I was asked how many and I stated "one", the man then turned around without saying anything and walked away and then points at a table so I walk over and sit down and then he was pretty quick to take my order and the food came out in under ten minutes which was awesome. But then after I got my food I didn't get checked on at all until I was finished eating and had to put my napkin on the table and my credit card and even then I didn't get checked on for probably another ten minutes and at that point I let them know the food was amazing and that I was ready to pay. But overall I will be returning because the food was SO GOOD Highly suggested for the food.

Quick rating (out of 5) Cleanliness: 3/5 Environment: 4/5 Value for money: 1/5 Food Quality: 1/5 Staff and Friendliness: 3/5 This was a surprisingly bad restaurant. We discovered Tio's while walking through a trendy area in South Jordan with a Farmer's Market in full swing and charming craft booths nearby. Tie-dye, macrame, a guy singing with an acoustic guitar...we never expected to have such a flatly disappointing time at Tio's Mexican Restaurant. The gorgeous smell brought us in but delivered nothing. We were seated immediately as we arrived right when the restaurant opened. I thought the atmosphere was cute and charming, with stringed colored lights, murals, and other Mexican-style decor. It was distinctly trendy, however, with no Mexican mariachi music. It was a bit more mass-audience but the other restaurant-goers were of all ages and had many Spanish speakers having a good time. A child's party was even being set up with balloons and connected tables. It was very sweet. We received the complementary chips and salsa right away. The chips were nothing special - the twice-fried seasoned kind that aren't bad - and the salsa was spicy and unique. It was a smooth sauce rather than a chunky, veggie-laden one. My husband liked it better than I did, but this is a personal preference. You will have much more of your drink while having the salsa. I ordered the El Pollo Guadalajara and my husband asked for the Cuatro. I also ordered a traditional margarita. Right away, we were told that the grill hadn't been fired up yet and that it would take extra time for my meal, which consisted of a blacked chicken breast and a cheese enchilada (with rice and beans). I thought this was weird but we weren't in a hurry. Another of the staff came by soon after and repeated what our server said, but asked if this was ok or if I wanted to order something else. Weird again, but I was fine with waiting. We had more chips and salsa. The margarita was very bright-tasting and fresh but I wonder if there was any alcohol at all because I never felt a thing. The taste was nice but nothing else. For some reason, the lime had a little umbrella in it. Maybe they were sprucing it up a bit. It was my first umbrella margarita. Also, I believe the margarita glass had just come from the dishwasher because it had warmed the drink a bit. When we both got our meals, I was pretty surprised. I had a large, flat, unseasoned chicken breast that looked as if it had been pan-fried and not been on a grill at all. It was a barely light-brown color and, worst of all, tasteless and dry. The rice was awful and had an odd, acrid taste. The enchilada seemed normal, but also had an odd flavor. The cheese reminded me of American cheese and not cheddar- it wasn't good at all. I had a little (to taste) and then stopped eating altogether. My husband had the same problem with his enchilada but he also had a beef taco, which was also tasteless. Sadly, the beef was also, -crunchy- and overcooked and barely filled the shell. The lettuce and tomato were fresh. We did not order a dessert. The staff member who asked us about the chicken grill wait time returned to our table and apologized for our experience. We received a discount because he saw that I did not eat much, especially the chicken. He was very sensitive to how we felt about the meal and I appreciate his efforts toward us. The whole experience was very disappointing and unfortunate.

When I asked to add four more tacos, the price jumped to $175. When I politely asked for clarification on the math--as $40 for four tacos seemed excessive--the staff member became defensive and snappy. Instead of explaining the charges, she told me to "come inside and see for myself" in a very condescending tone. The unprofessionalism continued when I asked if there would be an extra charge for onions and jalapeños. Rather than answering a simple yes or no, she responded with further attitude, demanding to know if I "wanted it or not" before finally stating it was included. Despite the terrible service, I proceeded with the order and requested a 9:30 p.m. pickup time to ensure the food would be ready for a strict 10:00 p.m. deadline for my brother. Despite placing this order seven hours in advance, the food was not ready when my mom arrived at 9:30 p.m., and she was forced to wait. Between the rude, dismissive attitude of the staff and the failure to have a pre-ordered meal ready on time, I am extremely disappointed. I will not be returning to this location

The salsa can vary a little from batch to batch (sometimes mild, sometimes surprisingly fiery), but that's part of the experience. Just know they bring a bowl per entrée and then charge for extras -- which feels a little lame, not gonna lie... but we still order it anyway because it's still good. It's clean, lively, and always buzzing. Weekend evenings? Absolute chaos. If you don't like a packed house and a wait, plan accordingly. We've learned our lesson there. Food-wise, it's the classic comfort lineup and it never disappoints. Cheese enchiladas are a staple for us. The flautas? So good. Fajitas? Solid every time. And let's just say if you're not adding cheese on top of your beans... you're missing out on the full experience. That melty layer makes everything better. We ordered off the kids menu this time too, and honestly I was impressed. $7 for a kids meal where you pick the entrée feels fair these days, and everything came out hot and tasty. Now... tonight's service was rough. Our server, Noemi, took about 15 minutes to bring water after we sat down -- even after we asked three separate times. We had chips and salsa immediately (and this batch of salsa was way hotter than usual), so when our toddler started coughing from the spice and needed water, we let her know. Somehow she still came back to take our order before bringing drinks. We literally had to say, "Can we please get water before we order?" It was strange and honestly frustrating. BUT. The food was still great. The atmosphere is still one we enjoy. And the chips and salsa will absolutely pull us back in again. La Hacienda is still our go-to when the salsa craving hits -- we'll just be hoping for smoother service next time.

If you are okay with exchanging waiting to be seated with subpar service it's the same food. I however am thinking the service at the other location will pull me back there.

Of everything we tried, the Cheesy Pastor Tacos were the clear standout. The birria, asada, and chorizo were all good, but the pastor tacos stole the show. Next time I'll probably skip the variety and just order those. The only thing that caught us off guard was the seating policy. They wouldn't seat our table until everyone in the party had arrived, even though the people we were waiting for were literally pulling into the parking lot. It wasn't a huge issue, but it did feel a little unnecessary and inconvenient. Overall, the food was excellent, the drinks were refreshing, and the experience was a good one.
