A little off the beaten path, but worth the detour!…read more We missed breakfast and the Bloody Mary bar, but were pleasantly surprised by the rest of the menu. We sat at the bar and had great service. Several tables are available, but all orders were placed at the bar. Overall the atmosphere was very clean and well decorated. You could call it a clean towny bar. Drinks were good, Bloody Mary was pretty standard (would have been better if we made it before the Bloody Mary bar closed). Several beers on tap, and a good variety of liquors. We shared the loaded tater tots, the fried onions stole the show. The portion was large, so we need a carry out container. Then split the wings, price was very reasonable. Wings were crispy and delicious, then came with a "bucket of sauces" - see picture. It was fun to mix and match. Several others around us got burgers, steak sandwiches, etc. Excited to go back to try more menu items, especially breakfast!

I called them and the bartender told me the manager (or owner?) was sitting right there, but he would talk to him and see if there was anything he wanted to do about it. He took my name and number. Apparently he is doing nothing because he never got back to me. We will order from the Ding from now on.

Soup flights for the win!…read more A last minute invitation resulted in us finding a restaurant we will definitely check out again in the future! A short drive from the Fox Valley, I was startled to see such a nice pub and grill. Looks great from the outside and even nicer in the inside. If I lived close by, I'm sure I'd be there frequently. Plenty of televisions, gaming machines and a well designed layout. I was seriously impressed. The night we went, they only offered soup flights. We were told by our friends, who had been there several times, that they offer only pizzas, soups and appetizers. Our friends had not tried the pizza but said the appetizers are great. There were literally a dozen soups to choose from for our flights. I picked sausage tortellini, clam chowder and stuffed pepper for my flight. It also comes with a piece of cheese/garlic bread. Not only were the soups nice and hot, they were all tasty. This sentiment was shared by my dining partners. The staff were friendly and helpful. The drinks were reasonable and well made. The ambience was excellent. Definitely a place we will return to!

There is a dartboard available and I noticed they had bottles of wine as well. There was just the one man who I believe is the owner working in front and he was busy taking and filling orders the whole time we were in. We ordered the meatballs app and a sausage pizza. While the crust is not made in house, the thin style we went with was super nice and flaky/crispy and the pizza sauce slightly sweet. All in all it was a good meal.

The restaurant is a bit off the beaten path. That works if you are looking for good food; which the restaurant offers. We had a party of six of our table. Everyone agreed the food was very good. I had the Mile High Meatloaf. It was a great portion and was cooked perfectly. I added the salad bar for a minimal charge. It was well stocked with all the standard items and many tasty pasta salads. Several people I was dining with had the Cajun style walleye. They also received hearty portions and said it was really good. I have to tie our bar choices to our experience with our waitress. She was a young girl. She was very nice. Whoever trained her (or didn't train her) is responsible for her shortcomings. The poor girl had no idea about anything served at the bar. People at my table had to go up to the bar to look at the beers offered and to look at which liquors were available. First, the young lady should have been instructed to say, "Let me check on that". Secondly, someone could have helped her with a cheat sheet. It was an awkward 5 minutes of drink orders. Again, not her fault but failure by whoever "trained" her. Overall, the drinks were good. Another "training" failure was our waitress not returning to see if anyone needed anything or to see if another round of drinks was needed. No one to blame but management for not giving our young waitress the chance to provide exceptional service. Would I return? Indeed. The food was tasty and reasonably priced. If the manager did right by their employees, it would have been a truly great experience.

They also have a connected hall that could host a small wedding or meeting. I was very impressed with the building but unfortunately I was underwhelmed with a few things. Primarily the drinks. Sadly in this area, especially on a Friday night, the night club experience includes a good drink, usually an Old Fashioned. The drinks we had were so lacking in booze and old fashioned mix, that it was like drinking soda. Watching the pours, the bottles had automatic pours on them, that I'm sure were set to less than an ounce. The prices were average, but the drinks were terrible. I would much rather pay more and get a good drink! Most of my group had the Friday Perch Fry. Like the drinks, I thought the pricing was on par with the other fish fries. The size (amount) of the plate was great. Some people in our group liked the unique panko breading on the fish, others did not like it at all. I thought it was different, but good. What I couldn't understand was that when we got there, we were the only ones in the bar and 3 tables of people were eating on a Friday Night during Lent in Catholic heavy Eastern Wisconsin. This is a bad sign. A good Fish Fry restaurant usually clean ups at this time of the year! I would maybe go back to eat, but not when I'm with a group that would like a drink or too before our meal. This is crazy for a fish fry

I have a guilty little pleasure (besides cranking Def Leppard): it is stopping at the Welcome Home…read moreSaloon/Good Stuff Grill (WHSGSG) in Stiles, Wisconsin on return trips home to visit family. My in-laws live just a tad bit further North than the WHSGSG. We typically are heading up to visit them after a day of work in Milwaukee. So by the time we get to Stiles, it's late, we're hungry and we haven't yet had a taste of Friday night ... if you know what I mean. ;) The WHSGSG welcomes us home at just the right time. My wife and I grab a seat at the bar and have the bartender set us up with a couple of cold Old Mil's. We then peruse the menu which is mostly an exercise in futility because we already KNOW what we are going to order: the fish sandwich. It's hard not to order the fish sandwich. It comes stacked with lightly breaded fish filets piled high within a fresh bakery roll. If you want, you can get a slab of tomato, lettuce, onions and pickles alongside your sandwich too. Which, of course, I do want. It also comes with a potato side of your choice. I opt for the fries; they're good, while my wife is a fan of the potato salad. The price of this tasty sandwich? Only $4.99!! I think it would be a good deal at nearly twice the price! You may be wondering about the name "Welcome Home Saloon/Good Stuff Grill." The place, appearing as one business, is actually two. The Good Stuff Grill operates independently within the saloon. The owner of the grill honed her cooking skills at the Waubee Lodge farther north in Lakewood. So if you live in southern Oconto County or northern Brown county and are longing for the taste of the northwoods, but don't feel like making the long drive, save some gas and head to Stiles instead. When we last visited (two nights prior to this review), the saloon had live entertainment: Schmidt Happens. After my initial chuckle over the entertainment's moniker, I was pleasantly surprised at how good this father/son duo is. The son is a multi-instrumentalist with a voice that makes me wonder what he's doing playing guitar in a bar in Stiles, Wisconsin on a Friday night. This kid's got some chops! I became endeared to him when he intro'd a song by saying "Here's one from a guy you've probably never heard of: John Hiatt." Before note one I said "Yes!" (John Hiatt's my Elvis; I've been a HUGE fan of his for over 20 years.) The younger Schmidt than nailed a pitch perfect "Have a Little Faith in Me" that my eyes watering at song's end. It was that good. Maybe Schmidt Happens won't be playing the next time we drive up north on a Friday night, but one thing's for certain: the Old Mil's will still be cold, the fish sandwich will still be hot and I'll still be looking to kick-off a good weekend at the Welcome Home Saloon/Good Stuff Grill!

I always ask them if they are planning on getting a bite to eat, and if they do, I send them to the Welcome Home. I only get one thing there: a hamburger. The place is never busy (sad for them, great for you) because you get the owner's full attention. I recommend it highly.
