Tipton Street Pub was a fun stop during our night out in downtown Johnson City. By day it feels like a pretty typical neighborhood pub, with booth seating on one side and the bar on the other. As the evening goes on, though, the music gets much louder and the atmosphere shifts into more of a nightlife vibe. It felt like a mix between a local pub and a late-night hangout, with people enjoying drinks and making the most of the evening. I am extremely disappointed that I flew from The Bahamas to Johnson City & my first stop upon arrival was to Tiptons Bar only to be told that they do not accept "foreign Id's" and that I am not allowed in their bar unless I bring a passport.. because my Government Issued drivers license isn't good enough. When did it become a crime to be a foreigner & why would anyone want to walk around with their passport just to visit a college bar ? It was an extremely tacky and disappointing experience especially since I loved tiptons when I was a college student at ETSU. I will not fight to spend my hard earned money anywhere therefore I will not be visiting a bar that discriminates against my nationality and identification. Very unwelcoming and disheartening... so much for supporting local businesses. I am a world traveler and have NEVER being denied entry anywhere else in the world. Pathetic. read more

Tipton's is a great local bar with a small town vibe. It reminds me of my old bar back in PA. Small and smoky. The drinks are decent, but I definitely didn't enjoy my whiskey. It tasted very watered down, but I also understand that will happen sometimes. Great crowd, young and mature, with a variety of music playing. You get a little bit of everything in this bar. Laughs, drinks, and meeting new people to talk to. Definitely a great stop on a bar crawl. read more

Wasn't a busy night but the bartender did her best to avoid communicating with me as much as possible. Refused to give me change and pocketed the tip she demanded instead of the generous tip I would have given her. Refused to talk to my friend when he asked about the beer prices. I went to Tipton's during my vacation in east Tennessee with my cousins and was surprised as to how neat this bar actually is. It has a pretty standard 'college' feel with the crazy eclectic juke box mix (metal, country, hip-hop), but what I liked about it was the crazy eclectic group of people. I went there for my birthday and left within 2 minutes. The food and drinks are overpriced and it's filled with unfriendly staff. The crowd that hangs out at Tipton's are obnoxious 30 something year olds who are the type of people that drive lifted pick up trucks with monster energy bumper stickers and blast Three Days Grace. The good news about this place is that it looks a million times better than the rest of Johnson City does, although that really isn't saying a lot. The bad news about this place is that me and two friends ordered sushi dishes that had shrimp in it, and all the shrimp looked and felt undercooked. We even sent it back telling them that and they brought more undercooked shrimp. We ended up leaving the shrimp food on the table. Thanks for the crap. I fell for TSP the first time I came in, just after it opened. To quote the Yogi, "nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded." TSP always has something crazy going on. Last night was Nuclear Bingo...the funniest part was when 2 players would tie...they had to play quarters, karaoke, or some drinking game to break the tie. Busy for Spring Break in a college bar. I credit TSP for kicking off the downtown bar scene renewal a few years back. For me at least, this is where it all started. A lively college crowd on most nights, this place is a contemporary classic. Come see the game here. An older one of my reviews, that seems to be lost, joked about the eclectic clientele. You can post up at the bar between college party girls, professional drinkers, downtown characters, businessmen, a vagabond, and a gaggle of philosophy department staff from ETSU. The JETS and VOLS games will always be on, and you can ask for pretty much any game you want. It's not a sports bar per se, but it can be if you need it. What should you expect from a smokie Johnson City bar? This place was your standard divvy bar. They had some great drink specials on the board behind the bar. They do allow smoking inside which sucks but it was not that bad. They have a great patio outside that you can sit at and yell at the people on the streets. The bartenders were nice and talkative. I did notice they had food but I am not sure I would order anything to eat here. The bathrooms are nasty too. They were playing some crappie rap music when we were there. We had 2 drinks and left. If you are looking to get drunk and mess around I would say this is your place. read more

We accidentally ended up here when looking for another restaurant for lunch - wasn't terrible though. Definitely gives the vibe of a local dive bar: stale smokey air, super lax staff, minimal menu. That being said, our sandwiches were yummy and very inexpensive. I'd go back for drinks. read more

I visit JC time to time due to family living there. I have been here a few times, and I will NOT be going back. The service was okay up until the time to pay. Our server brings us our checks (there were 3 of us) and she disappears. After about 20 minutes of the receipts with our credit cards laying on the table, we notice our server is having a beer at the bar. I finally have to flag someone down to settle our tabs, being as we were not taken care of and her concern was drinking a beer. So, I leave the server a $0 tip. (And yes, I have been a server before, but I did my job...you don't get anything if you are not doing your job). My tab total was $4.00. Well, I check my bank statement today and the charge from Tipton was $5.00!!! ILLEGAL!!!! I will never go here ever again. This is a nice place with friendly staff. Unfortunately they insist on carding every patron who orders alcohol regardless of age. It isn't a Tennessee state law it's a policy and I disagree with it. Don't be too put-off by the reviews of the smokiness. They have pretty good ventilation and while there is smoking, it is not overwhelming. I have seen much worse. They do have some local beers and Terrapin. Music is decent and there is a good crowd on the weekends. read more

I took a friend from out of town to this Pub at 5 o'clock on a Sunday. We went in and sat there at a table for about 10 minutes. The waitress has walked right beside us twice at this point cleaning off the table beside us (even though it was mostly empty in the pub). The 3rd time she walked by I said "Hey, could we get a couple menus?" She says, I don't know, can I get an ID. I said How old do you have to be to eat here? She says "21. Do you have an ID or not?" And throws her dirty dish rag on our table. I am 27 but I looked at her and said never mind. We are leaving. She says "whatever" and walks away. My wife and I were in JC for her work. Didn't know anything about the area. Found this place and I hope we can go every time we visit JC. Super nice people, great food, great beer. Our kinda place. i left reeking of smoke, and there wasn't even any smoking inside. also, they don't have bitters (?) and made my manhattan with grenadine instead. i don't consider a manhattan to be a speciality cocktail. it's a classic! this place goes down a little in my book, but is still great for a quick shot if that's what you're in need of. read more

Not a bad place. The service always tends to be slow but there is usually only been one person working the bar and the tables when we have been. We have gone in a couple times to watch a game and have a burger. Their burgers surprised us how good they were. We have had the bacon cheeseburger and the regular and both have been awesome. As it is a bar then the place is full of cigarette smoke. That is the biggest down side I see. I really don't mind it being slow when the burgers are as great as they are and for a great price. If you can deal with the smoke give their burgers a try. read more

Had to wait around for the better part of an hour just to speak to a manager, in the meantime getting no service. Found out that he had been washing dishes in the meantime...it's pretty telling when dishes are valued more than customers. If a place is going to label itself a "pub," they need to understand what a PUB actually is. It's short for "public house" which means anyone is welcome, regardless of age. If they only want 21+ in their establishment, that's fine. But please save your potential customers embarrassment and POST IT ON THE DOOR, especially on First Friday, when there are a lot of families downtown. We just moved to Johnson City and had no idea that this so-called pub was actually just a college bar. We were walking around with our kids (15 and 8) and some friends and needed a restroom, so in order to not be rude and just use the facilities we were going to order a quick beer and be on our way. We were rudely kicked out and advised that "this is a 21 and over BAR you need to leave NOW." I looked at the door and it wasn't posted anywhere. Where I come from, kids are welcome at pubs, particularly before 9:00 p.m. It was maybe 8:00 at this point. Needless to say, I will never step foot inside again, and will take my business elsewhere. read more

I've been to Tipton a few times and found it to be a chill and relaxed scene. Great for meeting up with friends and colleagues to just sit back and be yourself with some good affordable eats/drinks. The wait staff always seem enthusiastic and fun! But here is where TSP separated itself from other establishments. The fine people at TSP catered a fund raiser in-kind for a couple hundred staff and visitors at the Veteran Affairs and man was the food good. TSP and NOLI Food Truck arranged for prime Ribs to be cooked on the smoker , hot, fresh and ready with BBQ sauces for the staff and everyone had a great time and the fund raiser was a huge success! There are establishments in Johnson City BUT then there is Tipton Street Pub who went above and beyond to ensure excellent community service. We can not thank the people at Tipton Street and NOLI Fresh Foods enough. Thank you for service to our Veteran community! read more
