Lads, this gaff absolutely slaps. Not jokin'--we're talkin' top-tier stuff here. Picture it: miserable Saturday, wind goin' sideways, whole day lookin' like it needs a good talkin' to. Me and the missus gets blown into this pub like two gobshites lookin' a shelter and a feed. And ... what a shout! I ordered the corned beef and cabbage, and I swear on me Ma's good china, it was filthy good. Fork went through it like it owed me money. Juicy, melty, little ribbons of fat runnin' through it like it was showin' off. The cabbage? Deadly. The mash? Lads... the mash tasted like an angel got notions and said "ah go on, I'll make this one myself." Bit of garlic, bit of peel, bit of magic. I nearly cried. We're not from Johnson City, so it might be a hot minute before we're back, but believe me--if I'm anywhere within sniffin' distance of this town again, I'll be leggin' it back to this place like a man late for mass. Ciaran, our server, was sound as a pound--quick, chatty, callin' us "friends" like he was adoptin' us. Man deserves a raise and a parade. The place is set up for tunes later on, loads of seats, loos clean enough to perform surgery in--madness. Prices? Couldn't argue with 'em even if I wanted to. The missus got fish and chips for eighteen quid, mine was twenty-one. Soft drinks only two quid, and a rake of beers and cocktails if you're feelin' spicy. Absolutely recommend this spot to slake the thirst and sate the hunger--ah now, that's the kind of night that'd put manners on ya. read more

It had to be the proverbial "luck of the Irish" that we blew into Mulligan's on a windy November day in Johnson City. This place is the real deal with Bangers and Mash, Shepherds Pie, Guinness Stew and more. I settled on Fish and Chips (actually cottage fries) that came with wee ramekins of tartar sauce and tangy, sweet coleslaw, and a slice of lemon. Instead of citrus, I chose to liberally sprinkle malt vinegar on my battered cod and potatoes. Yum! The best fish and chips I ever enjoyed was at a diner near the California coast, but Mulligan's is pretty darn close. Although the pub has a hearty beer and cocktail selection, I ordered a soft drink which cost only $2.00 and came with a refill. Now that's a bargain! Since only a few other tables were occupied, the spouse and I got first-class service from a witty Irishman (I think) named Ciaran. (sp?) Later that evening, the pub was hosting live entertainment, and on some nights there's karaoke and other events. If I ever find myself in Johnson City again, I'll be sure to swing by. read more

I was expecting to love this place. The service (Gatsby) was sweet and polite, but I was disappointed to see that neither of the two things I came here to try (Shepherd's pie or Guinness stew) was available because only a limited menu is offered for Sunday lunch. That's a pity because I work during the week and only go to restaurants on the weekends for lunch. Ended up having the fish and chips, which was pretty good, but honestly, better at Puerto Nuevo in Elizabethton (plus, you get a salad). Hubby got a very dry and overcooked chicken sandwich. The pups won't mind, so we took it home for them. The fries were really good. Maybe one day, we'll make it back to try what I was originally planning on ordering, but it definitely won't be for Sunday lunch. Better luck next time. read more

After spending a few days in Dublin Ireland and frequenting The Temple Bar and Brazen Head, I was missing a good drawn Guinness. I heard of Mulligans but hadn't made it up until yesterday. I asked an old friend to meet me there for lunch. Albeit a quieter time of the day, the decor and stage indicated a much livelier crowd in the evening. Note to self, go back on a Friday night. Our waitress Gatsby was a pure delight. She was prompt with both our drinks and food. We asked a lot of questions and through them all she smiled and left us satisfied with her replies. Now, if you're craving Irish beer or whiskey, they'll be your new favorite stop. We had Guinness, of course, but also, Harps and Smithwicks. Not much of a whiskey person but I did see their selections. We both had the fish and chips. Good and fresh. They have lots of Irish dishes so return trips are on the schedule. The outside is well marked and it is easy to find. Parking is limited since It's downtown but that is to be expected. There are a lot of signs saying to not park in the rear lot as that is not theirs and your vehicle will be towed. Waking in, the hostess station is right in front. There is a counter to the right which may be for pickup orders. Seating is primarily tables which are well spaced so you don't really feel crowded and it is easy to walk through. We were greeted and seated immediately on entering. There are many options for gaming at your table from traditional board games to bookcase games. There is also a pool table as well as two dart boards. Our waiter came by quickly to take our drink order. The drinks were brought quickly but he left without asking if we were ready to order. We waited at least 15 minutes before a different waitress came by to take our food order. We ordered the fish and chips as well as a Reuben sandwich. We were told they were not serving sandwiches until after 2 (this was on a Saturday at noon). Since we had already waited a while and could not order what we wanted we decided to leave. The owner caught up to us as we were walking out to ask what the problem was. When told, he asked us to come back as they were actually serving sandwiches. Apparently our waitress was new and was confused with the Sunday brunch menu. We decided to give them another chance and placed our order. While waiting for our food the owner came to sit with us. We learned his mother and wife also worked there. He left after talking a few minutes. We continued waiting for our food. He came by to check on us again and said he would see what was causing the delay. We waited at least 30 minutes for our food to arrive after ordering and they were only half full in the dining area. My dining partner and I both immediately noticed the strong fish smell when the fish and chips arrived. It overpowered everything else on the table. The fish was overcooked and rubbery and the chips were also overdone. The Reuben was decent with good proportions of meat and sauerkraut. The accompanying fries were overdone. We then waited at least 10 minutes for our check, even after asking our waiter. He did take the payment quickly and returned with the receipt. There was no discount due to the long wait. This is not a place we will return to. read more

My husband & I ate lunch here because we had a "sweet deal" from WQUT. My husband had fish & chips. The fries tasted like they had been sitting for quite awhile. The top of the fish was nice & crispy, but the bottom was soggy. My shepard's pie was very bland. We'll never eat there again. However, the worst thing to happen was that when I asked the owner if the restrooms were upstairs, he ridiculed me for not know that TN law does not permit that. This place is nothing short of fabulous! Talk about a hidden gem... well, one that's not so hidden! My hubs and I walked into this spacious but cozy pub and were immediately greeted by Keith, who made us feel very welcome. After we were seated and our server gave us menus, Sean, the owner, sat with us a chatted a while about the pub's backstory and his vision for its future.  After our server ran us through the specials, we ordered the Scotch Eggs for an appetizer and we both ordered the fish and chips. Both dishes were incredible! The Scotch Eggs were a new experience for us and are now on our short list of favorite appetizers. Hard boiled eggs wrapped in sausage, coated with breadcrumbs and fried, with a honey mustard dipping sauce on the side. Sounds simple, yes? But the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts. Wow! (Picture taken after we ate half.) The fish and chips were without a doubt the best in east Tennessee by far. The thick, flaky, perfectly cooked cod with an extremely flavorful, crispy beer batter is on a new level of delicious. The fries were thick cut and crispy on the outside but creamy and fluffy on the inside. The dish came with a nice tartar sauce and a pickle spear. And to top it off, the table condiments include a bottle of malt vinegar, which in my mind, is a must for fish and chips. The most surprising thing was the place was not packed! With great food and an atmosphere like this, I can't believe there wasn't a line out the door waiting for a table.  Let's change that! I'm here to say if you don't try this place, you're losing out on a treasure chest of great food, good people, and a comfortable, friendly setting. read more

Largest issue could be resolved with a split A/C unit. Apparently the kitchen staff working hard in very hot conditions have control of the AC controls...we F R O Z E. Wear pants, and a coat. The service was really good, the fish cooked perfectly, and the Reuben was yummy. Was surprised on a $123 bill to see a .50 charge for dipping sauce, seemed a bit nickel-and-dime-ish. read more

I am not a typical person that does reviews. As a matter of fact I never do them, but this needs to be said. Mulligans is by far the best place to be in Johnson City! The staff is insane, they are so friendly and make you feel right at home. I get the Guinness stew every time I come and it is by far the most delicious, hearty and tasty soup I have ever placed upon my tongue. Recommend with a few reservations. I eat breakfast every Sunday morning with a group of friends who attended the early mass and need a breakfast time that is a bit on the early side for Sunday. So I heard that Mulligan's opened at 10:00 on Sundays, and we went. We'll, their chef can't have food ready before 11. They were nice and gave us some fresh scones while we were waiting and didn't charge for them, which was nice. So, finally, it was time to order, and we had the "full English breakfast, " which is their only breakfast offering, which is fine for me. I had looked on the internet the day before and knew what I was getting into. We also could have ordered from the lunch menu if we had wanted to. I had never had a full English breakfast before, and quickly discovered I'm just not a beans-on-toast kind of gal. Also, somebody needs to introduce the English to Bush's Baked Beans. Vastly superior to the Heinz preferred in the UK. Everything else on that plate was delicious. I can't remember when I've had such a perfectly cooked egg. So if you're looking for an English breakfast at 11am Sunday, Mulligan's should hit the spot! read more

We went for our first time last week to Mulligan's, what a great experience it was. Why we waited so long, I haven't got a clue. The owner Kieth is a hands on guy and it reflects in the service, quantity and cleanliness of the place. Ex CIA, he has put his heart and soul into this place and couldn't be a nicer guy. We started with the Scotch Eggs and Soda Bread and of course a pint of Guinness, came out quickly and both knocked our socks off. We had the Fish N Chips and Fish N Onion Rings for the main course. Food came out extremely fresh and golden and surprisingly large portions...it was awesome, better than what I get in England. This is now our go to place when we want that pub feel and to support a local owner that truly cares about his customers. read more

Tried this place last week and it didn't disappoint. Our bartender/server, Nicole was top notch. She was friendly, accurate and quick with everything despite waiting on the entire restaurant. I ordered the fish and chips. The fish was outstanding!!!! I wish I had asked for the steak fries well done though, because they could have used another minute or two in the fryer. I also wish that it came with coleslaw, but I was told that has been removed from the menu. My partner ordered the Guinness beef stew. I tried a bite and we both agreed that was delicious also. We each had a mixed drink and then both had a black and tan. The manager, Sean, came over and talked with us for a bit. He was friendly and made us feel welcome. Always a good impression when a manager spends time talking with guests because it shows he cares about this place. This will be a monthly stop for us. read more

Food was fantastic, staff was super friendly and welcoming, there's plenty of seating, and they have live Celtic music on the weekends. Highly recommend the French onion soup (best I've ever had- and I'm a foodie), fish and chips were excellent, and my husband raved about the Rueben sandwich. 1st time in the pub and 1st to have Irish soda bread-moist and dense. Poutine, fried curds, chips and topped with brown onion gravy-another 1st! So good! It was cloudy and cool; a perfect day for a warming, filling lunch. A big fan of draught Guinness! Tons of games if we wanted to while away the afternoon. I was very excited to try this place. Pros: The fish and chips were good - fish crispy and perfectly cooked. (The "chips " are nothing special). Had a side salad that was honestly one of the freshest and most delicious I have ever had. Drinks were reasonably priced. This would be great place to take family and kids to play games. Cons: there is NO parking and had to circle round and round to find a spot on the street blocks away. This was a Friday. The restaurant is a large room when I had expected a more intimate "pub" atmosphere. The room is very noisy. Probably not great for a romantic dinner. Service was not great but maybe they were really busy? Live music was enjoyable but very hard to hear. They have a good following and you can see from most reviews, people love the food. Overall a nice restaurant but I'm not sure I would go again. read more

Just visited Mulligan for the first time I had the Guinness stew. It was absolutely fantastic. Was so excited to try this establishment because I had heard the fish and chips were wonderful. Just ok, at best. The two pieces of fish were good but not memorable. The chips were just steak fries. My husband ordered the Guinness stew. It was not edible. The meat was shoe leather tough, fatty and gristly. The potatoes and other vegetables were few and not fully cooked. He ate the broth with his bread for his dinner. We told the waitress that the stew was not good and she didn't offer to change it to anything else or, even ask if he wanted to order anything else. These were not inexpensive meals, being $18.00 and $15.00 respectively. We will never be back here nor recommend it to anyone else. This place is not a good representative of a good Irish Pub. We would have enjoyed a meal at McDonalds as much for a lot less money. So disappointing! read more
