My friend and I met up at TJ Thai after work and were treated very well! The hibachi chef was a delight! We shared our table with a family celebrating their 10 year old daughter's birthday and that was so much fun! The food was delicious and we each had more than enough to take half home for leftovers. After dinner we had drinks in the bar. Nate the bartender is very responsive and has great drink recommendations. Our glasses were never left just sitting empty and when we weren't sure what to try, he had just the right suggestion for each of our different tastes. It isn't easy to be so attentive to each of the customers in a full bar, but he was! I have celebrated my birthday and one of my anniversaries by having dinner at TJ Thai... but I like how it feels like a special event, even when it's just two friends hanging out. read more

The sushi was great, the thai and warm Japanese dishes were so-so. It just seems such an odd mix of two very different cuisines. The sushi portions were on the small side, but they were beautifully presented. The one negative aspect was the timing the food was brought out. I agree with the last reviewer. A much needed change from the mediocre, at best, fish in the valley. This restaurant is in place of the old Grazie's. The inside was well decorated, trendy/contemporary. Good first date spot. I ordered chirashi and Ikura which were prepared nicely. The cuts were fresh tasting and generously sized. We received a sample for two of their seaweed salad while waiting for our order. I don't usually like the stuff because i'm not terribly fond of the sesame oil but this was really good. They also had some weekend specials, one being the Pringle special...your choice of fish atop a pringle(x5), yes, the crunchy chip. I had the spicy white tuna, it had a fun texture and taste. I'd order it again. Most places in the Appleton area only have a few types of fish in their case...but this place had a variety, and it all looked appetizing, not like it had been sitting there for days. read more

This place is severely understaffed and the service is deplorable. The bar is tiny and is the only place to wait for your table which will be ready 40 minutes after your reservation time. The hibache chef was terribly boring and uninteractive. Additionally watch your bill for extra gratuity as it was tripled on our bill and about 4 times higher than it should be. read more

Went for lunch at 1pm. Only two other tables of people. I was of course sat right away at a nice table near the sushi bar. My waitress was very nice! It wasn't too long after I put in my orders that my sushi appetizer came out. Great flavor and very fresh! Then as I was about halfway the my appetizer that I received my chicken pad thai- so yummy. Love the food here! We typically do the hibachi and the filet mignon is delicious! Easily cut the steak with a fork and the yum yum sauce is yummy! Drinks taste great but in my opinion could be stronger. Had a martini and it wasn't strong at all. Taste was great though. Will keep going back. Oh and our waitress was awesome. Would not recommend. Crab rangoons came with very little crab and tasted terrible. Spring rolls tasted bad as well. I was charged $6 for a kiddie cocktail that was 3/4 full so I asked for a refill. Came here Feb 14 for hibachi - it was awesome. Definitely would do again. Am here right now as I write April 4th and the waiter just wiped up water he spilled on the floor and then wiped our table after. :( Hoping the sushi makes up for that. read more

Was just here over the weekend. We always get cashew chicken, lettuce wraps and edamame. This is a great restaurant, food is always hot, fresh and tastes delicious. Also, if you like sushi, this is some of the best in town. It's not the cheapest but it's worth every penny. Service is above average. read more

Absolutely terrible service for a Saturday night. We arrived at 5:30 pm and waited until 6:45 pm to actually be seated for dinner (not hibachi, which we were told would be a much longer wait). The bar is tiny, so our party, along with many others, were stuck waiting for our table in a cramped bar. Our poor waitress seemed frazzled as she was wait staffing a majority of the dinner tables. I do have to say that the food was very good, but I'm not sure if the wait and service made the trip worth it. Very solid 4. We were greeted right away by the hostess and seated. It took a bit for our waitress to stop by for drinks, but she made it eventually. We had naruto roll, TJ Sampler, and Mexican roll. All of them were excellent. The only complaint my wife had is there was no crunch in any of the rolls. Flavor was great though. Then we have the Ichiban roll. Holy crap is it hot. This is our 3rd or 4th visit and we continue to be impressed. This time we brought a couple who particularly enjoy eating and cooking themselves and were very pleased with their meals. Went there twice in the last week. Once for lunch, had the Pad Thai and asked for it "Spicy"...This is usually not a spicy dish, but they made it spicy and it was great!!!!! Went again on Sunday with my Parents for Lunch. We had Hibachi. First of all our Hibachi Chef was AWESOME! He was very entertaining, put on a great show, and the food was excellent and the portion was double that of Nakashima or Katsu Ya!!!! Someone mentioned on here they had bad service, had to be a fluke? Because both times we had PERFECT service. And to top it off, "CINDY" the owner stopped by several times to make sure all was "ok".. Then her and I started talking about food (I cook a lot) I explained how I make Red Curry and Pad Thai at home often. She was so awesome and funny, she took time out of her day to get me some of her Red Curry to try and said that I should bring mine in for her to try so we can see who's is better:) I HAD A GREAT TIME!!!! So disappointed. The restaurant closes at 10pm (it's Thursday) we came in at 8:40 craving sushi. We had read your yelp reviews, looked at the menu previous to trying this establishment, seen some gorgeous photos, and were excited to dine here. We went to the bar to grab a drink, and hopefully some food. Nope. We were greeted with a "what can I do for you," complained that she had to get the fruit out of the refrigerator since we ordered a lime with a Captain and Coke, and rolled her eyes when I ordered a glass of wine. At which point my fiance and I gave each other the look of we are not eating here. I can't say we've ever felt so unwelcome in a restaurant as tonight. We both work in the industry, we get it, it's somewhat close to closing time. But you have an hour and fifteen minutes until close... Not thirty minutes. We thought we would have given ample time to eat and leave before closing, but apparently not. We will not be returning based on the incredibly awful attitude of your bartender. Amazing sushi! As a previous employee at Katsuya in Appleton for many years, I know what good quality sushi is like. I am so pleased to have TJ's in my area because I would say their sushi even goes beyond that of Katsuya and Nakashimas. They give you more meat and less rice, which is always a great thing for those of us who love the taste of our fish. I am always pleased with the quality and taste as well as presentation at TJ's and would highly recommend it to others! read more

My girlfriend and I stopped in for sushi and maybe a entree since we heard good things about TJ's. We were not disappointed with anything except our service. Not that the service was bad but just not great. He new some about the menu but not a lot, and when we ordered wine he was back 2 more times to make sure he had it right and actually took the menu to the bar so ensure the proper wines where served. He was a bit awkward but very nice. We started with Lettuce Wraps, which were good and well presented. We followed that with 3 rolls the Dynamite roll, the Philadelphia roll, and one other roll i can't remember the name of but it was one of the best rolls i've had around here, spicy tuna and smoked salmon with avocado over the top . All where very good and made a nice combo of flavors. We finished by splitting the Drunken Noodles with pork at the 3 level of spicy. I love spicy food and my girlfriend likes it but not to hot, so this was a good level for us. It was a well balance of heat and flavor. All in all I have to say we will be back and maybe try the hibachi which sounded very loud and fun. TJ work on your web site by adding the sushi menu too it, also work a bit on your service, this is a beautiful restaurant inside and has great food and atmosphere, all the tools to make a unbelievable experience for all your guests, just let your servers know that and you will be on your way to a busy success. Dont bother with the thai food. If you want good thai check out Mai's Deli. The sushi is hit and miss.

Highly recommend! Went at 6:30 on a Wednesday evening. Not real busy when we got there. Server Hamilton was very pleasant and attentive. Chef Kee put on a teriffic Hibachi show and served us a perfectly cooked meal, through and through. Appitizers and sushi samplers were all very good as well. By the time we left the place was hopping, and it's no secret why. We will be back for sure! read more

Go somewhere else, we have an egg allergy, other places just make the fried rice in back and bring out if someone orders, we had one person at the table order fried rice and they refused to make it in back, instead they made us sit in the dining room and miss the whole event and made all our food in the back. would have been better to go to Panda express. we had tried this place for sushi a year ago and ordered a sweat potato avocado roll, it came with tempura sweet potato and no avocado, asked the waiter about it he went to sushi chef and came back and said this roll, even though it says avocado this roll doesn't come with avocado, then asked about the tempura where menu lists when rolls are tempura this one wasn't, he snapped back just eat it I'm not charging you for it. Waitress was very nice and personable but the food was not as good as another Appleton Thai restaurant and the sushi while tasting good was extremely small for a roll. Rolls are a given size due to the mat used. There was not enough rice to cover the inner wrap and the length was considerably shorter. I went there to try it as we are having a large sushi party. Great food amazing sushi for this part of Wisconsin. The bar is not the best because of the small size. The atmosphere is great as well. This place has hibachi as well I don't really enjoy that but its the same thing as all the other places. Service could be better and the owners kids shouldn't be running around. We stopped here on impulse after being told at Island there was an hour wait (you can read my review there), which actually turned out to be 3 hours, we later found out. Anyway, we went to TJs expecting subpar food but it was actually really good. The host asked us if we were going to eat hibachi or dinner and I said dinner. We were seated immediately. The ambiance was very welcoming and the servers were nice. My daughter seemed to like the paper cranes hanging on the wall and I was very thankful for the changing table in the women's restroom. We ordered shrimp tempura and the Love boat. The tempura was cooked just right. Because of my allergy to avocado, they were happy to replace any rolls on the love boat with non avocado rolls. It was a mixture of spicy rolls, sashimi and nigiri. The fish tasted fresh and the chefs knew how to cut so that was also good. Overall, we were very satisfied with our meal. We will be coming back here maybe even venturing out to try the Thai part of the menu or even the hibachi. read more

I have heard the sushi is good, but that is not what we tried. My wife and I have ate Thai food from all over the U.S. and some overseas. This was by far the worst Thai food I ever had, and it was the most expensive I ever had. We ordered the Red Curry. The sauce wasn't bad. Now the rice was gummy and tasted terrible. Also, I am not sure if the chicken was old, but it was slimmy and mushy. It tasted like chicken you buy from a box dinner from the grocery store, and I paid $14 for it, lol.Now when I asked for my money back, the manager, and not sure if he was the owner kinda made fun of me, like I don't know what good food is. They tried to get me to try something else (and pay for it), but I wasn't willing to try there food after tasting the chicken. I also ordered there Tom Yum Soup. I am not sure if I got the bottom of the pot, but it was terrible. It tasted like they make there soup from a box or something. How can you charge $5 for boxed soup that taste terrible. The broth was thicker and gritty. She tried telling me that is how it is, but I have had a hundred bowls of tom yum soup and it never tasted like that.I was shocked the manager didn't try anything to get us back into the restaurant, and how stupid they made me feel. I figured they would hook us up with a free meal or something. But I doubt this business will do well if more people have experiences like I did, because we wont go back. Fact is we accidentally wound up here looking for the old Gratzies. I was pleasantly surprised. Hibatchi was amazing and entertaining, our chef Bennie was great at his job and fun. The waitress was very accommodating and helpful. The food was top notch. I haven't had better sushi or hibatchi. Had the quail eggs, eel, squid, and a few Asian beers before the hibatchi. Too bad people experienced bad service here in the past and may not give them another chance. Maybe they read the reviews and have made some fixes because we had wonderful service!! Let me start with the food...truly amazing! I had shrimp Hybachi and the shrimp was plump and asian sweet. So much great flavor and way better than I anticipated. Reason I didn't expect much was because of the other Hybachi restaurant in town. As in another one of my reviews, I'm not a fan of Nakashima's and think they are grossly overrated. Their food tastes the exact same every time, lacking flavor and pizazz...including their sushi. I did not try the sushi at TJ's (this time) but from what I saw the sushi chefs making...it is most definitely a must in the future for me! The atmosphere is nice and comfortable. The Hybachi chef was a lot more fun than the ones I've seen before. Finally...the price was reasonable! I spent the same amount for 5 people at TJ's than I did for 2 people at 'the other place'. I hope they stay afloat and stick around because the alternative Hybachi isn't worth wasting my money at and it's finally a nice change to have another one with wonderful food! read more

Was waiting to be seated for about 5 min before the hostess showed up...on his cell phone, then instead of assisting me he said "excuse me" so I would get out of his way, disregarding me altogether. I just left after that. I took a look at their menu during the wait and it didn't look too appetizing at all. No wonder it was so empty in there. Food and service sucks. read more
