We went there to try their sushi on Saturday night, and this was the first time visiting this place. I will base my review on that particular visit, as it looks like this place is kind of a hit & miss. This place is not the easiest to get to and now I remember that a few other restaurants in that spot closed down because of the complicated access. Anyways, we got there about quarter after 7 and it seemed packed. Since we only wanted sushi and wanted to check out their sushi bar, we figured it wouldn't be as long of a wait as if we would've wanted hibachi dinner. The wait was about 20 minutes, so not bad, but once we sat down at the bar, the real wait has began. They have little print-out menus for different sushi rolls, etc. You have to circle which choice you want and hand it to the sushi chef. I could immediately see a problem there. How in the world do they keep track of who's sheet of paper they need to be working on and which customer it goes to? I was right, they can't:) It seemed like the guys at the bar were working on plates for different tables and the owner kept coming up and yelling at them because I guess they didn't keep it in a proper order. The wait staff constantly comes up to the sushi bar and reaches over your head to grab a plate of sushi for their table. Vary uncomfortable. No one took our drink order and we finally were able to ask for some water after half an hour of waiting. At quarter after 8, the owner noticed us still sitting there and waiting for our food so she yelled at the sushi chef again. He pulled our print-out menu from somewhere and started to work on it, but he still had to ask us if it was our order or someone else's. Our sushi plate looked great and tasted even better. The flavors were outstanding, the temperatures just right, and the variety of choices on the menu were plentiful. We were done with our dinner in about 20 minutes, and then spent another half an hour waiting for our bill. We had a 9pm show and by that time it was obvious we weren't going to make it. My friend actually got up and found the hostess to ask her if we're suppose to wait for the bill or pay at her booth. The hostess felt bad about it and found the owner who finally brought us the bill. So, all in all, we were very pleased with the food and it's definitely one of the best SUSHI choices in the Valley, but we were very disappointed by the service, or the lack of, and most likely will not be back again. It's too bad though because under a better management, this place could be a real jewel here in the Valley. read more

We just took our grandsons for lunch...we were seated almost immediately...service was excellent as was the food and hibachi chef. My wife had a question about the type of rice used by the restaurant and the owner bent over backwards to explain what variety it was and where we could obtain it ourselves. Our drink glasses were always kept filled and our empty plates were removed immediately. The decor and background music just added to the ambiance. read more

I've eaten here twice - both times the food was delicious! The service was OK last time, but tonight it was excellent - our server was almost tentative to a fault. He recommended some tasty dishes to a couple in my party, and they were quite pleased. I love Thai food, eat it often, and their Tom Kha Gai soup was the best I've ever had - truly spectacular! The Thai food is excellent! My wife and I have been to Thailand and most large cities across the world due to business travel. Having recently relocated to Appleton, we were very happy to discover their Amazing Curry dish. While the names are not so traditional, the food is very well prepared and the lunch specials are a bargain! The atmosphere is very chic. Hibachi is good and I have not tried the sushi. Man is the food and atmosphere great here... but the service is atrocious! Every time I come back (because I can't get enough of the Amazing Curry) and it's new waitstaff that is worse than the last. Don't expect to be in and out in less than an hour and a half. But seriously... the Amazing Curry is out of this world. read more

This place is nice but the waitress seem inexperience and forgetful. We had a 2 year old with us and ask for a soppy cup ten time. Then plates but we had to get up n get the plates ourselves. Felt like the couple next to us got what they needed right away compare to us have to keep asking her. Would not go back here. read more

This was our first visit to TJ Thai & Japanese Steakhouse. It offers hibachi, sushi & plate dinners. We had an appetizer, sushi & hibachi dinners. Here is what we liked. They take reservations! And we were seated promptly at our reservation time. Being a group of 6, we had a hibachi grill to ourselves. Our waiter, Hamilton was very good. He was attentive, quick & eager to meet our needs. Our chef, whose name we didn't catch, was excellent as well. There were children at another table who really enjoyed our chef's antics! The menus were very complete...you can get many different combos. The food was VERY good & plentiful! The drinks were good as well & very reasonably priced. The only downside was the noise level, which is very common in hibachi grill restaurants. Overall, we had a great time & would put this restaurant right up there with the other, more well known, hibachi grills in Appleton. We will definitely dine there again! read more

We have never been disappointed with the sushi at TJ's. We try to make the drive from Green Bay to Appleton once a week.

Great food! The service is very good as well. Very underrated restaurant. One of the best food in the Fox Cities!

We have eaten in this restaurant a half a dozen times and each time our food was really good. We loved our hibachi experience when our whole family went for a holiday dinner. It was very entertaining and fun! Other times we have ordered off the menu and had a little sushi as well. Our bloody marys were great! The only thing that could be improved in our eyes is the service as it is slower. read more

My wife and I went to TJ Steakhouse last night (4/1/15) with another couple. Called ahead to make sure they were open. Showed up, were seated and we ordered a bottle of wine. Next the waitress came back to take our food order and informed us that they did not have any tuna. I thought it might be an April fools joke so I asked "no tuna at a sushi house?" Alas, no tuna. Overall food was good but it would have been nice to know in advance that they were out of tuna either when we called or when we were seated. read more

The food is fine. If you are used to food in the fox valley this is probably a 3 or 4 star place. Management and service is piss poor. If there's a 45 minute wait for a table in the sushi bar area. I don't understand how it can sit and go un-cleaned for 10 minutes. A 1 hour wait for 3 sushi rolls is unacceptable. 2 managers standing around doing nothing? I don't see how this place would rate higher than 1 or 2 stars in Chicago or some other big city, although it's nice to see Appleton finely join the 1990's. The Hibachi Chef we had the first visit was entertaining. I was un-impressed on both visits when asking for a dish to be cooked to the spiciness of 5 on their 1 to 5 scale, and having it come back at a 1. Also, when bringing out the food people order. The person ordering off the menu probably shouldn't get their meal a full 50min before the person ordering sushi gets their rolls. I'm waiting either way. read more

After going to another local hibachi many times and loving it, we decided to try TJ because it was closer to home and wanted to give another restaurant a shot. The fact that there were only two other cars in the parking lot should have been a good clue to leave, but we went in anyway. When we entered the host asked us how many and didn't even offer hibachi; I had to ask if there was hibachi available. We were seated at a table by ourselves and were literally the only people in the hibachi area. My husband ordered a beer and it was warm (to be fair, the waiter asked if he wanted a frosted glass before my husband tried the beer, but my husband said no thinking that the beer would have been cold...). The waiter also forgot to bring us our soup and salad before dinner was being prepared, so we ate that while the chef was cooking. The ginger dressing on the salad (which is usually one of my favorite parts of the meal) was watery and disgusting. The chef came out and started cooking, but did not put on any type of show whatsoever. Just cooked the meal and left. Our shrimp "appetizer" was served after our steak, and the portion of veggies was very small. The food tasted ok, but I have been sick all morning which makes me think that something may have been bad. Also to note, the floors were extremely sticky throughout the entire restaurant and bathroom. We will never be going back to this restaurant...if you want amazing hibachi with wonderful service I highly recommend going to Nakashima's in Grand Chute instead. read more
