Ordered this 6 hours ahead for myself because I would be eating dinner on the go. I ordered a hot chicken parm hero with extra cheese and extra sauce, in the instructions said extra sauce on the side..this is what I got. No sauce at all on the actual hero, and not even enough sauce for the second half. Clearly there was no extra sauce if there isn't even enough for the whole thing, there is hardly any cheese, also definitely not extra... preplanned my day and paid $20 for this crap. Clearly I have an obsession that's way to much to handle. Back here in less than a week because the sandwich was just that good. Service is super friendly and fast especially considering the amount of people that stop by. I truly sat in awe as I waited for my food watching the lady and gentleman at the counter work their magic. They are right next door to Popeyes. Very easily missed if you don't know what your looking for. They have three locations. Not really a dine in place but do have tables. Prices are fair. Meats are fresh. Bread is super soft. They have EVERYTHING the little sandwich lover in me could ever desire. They also have a nice selection of chips and drinks. As I'm writing this review I realized I ordered their homemade tea and have no clue what the heck I did with it because it never made its way into my mouth...... interesting. I gave one star because unfortunately there hero's are advertised for one price and when you go there about $2.00 more. Over $14.00 for a hero!!! and when I brought up how the website had a different price she said it says in there "subject to change" but it does not say that on the website and when I pointed it out to the owner she started screaming "if I did not want the sandwiches I could bring them back" Just know if you go in there based on there website prices there false!! She even charged me over $14.00 for a BLT advertised as $9.99 under there "new creations" menu and gave me $1.00 back when she realized that was a lot cheaper on website. I will be reporting this issue because you cannot charge more then advertised and claim "you will be updating your website " How dare they!!!!! read more

I've been going to TJ's for at least 17 years and they are the best most amazing heros we have or will have. For 17 years we always get the same hero and for the record the best tuna (and I'm very fussy about tuna I don't like it to be fishy) and if you order rare roast beef it will be rare. We will be leaving New York in a few months and TJ's will absolutely be one of the neighborhood restaurants I will miss the most. If you haven't eaten a hero from any one of their shops I always go to the Patchogue one you are missing an ah ha mome Ok back in NY to take care of some things and of course the first place we wanted to eat was TJ's. Still as delicious as we remember, Texas could learn from them because they have no idea what a hero really is. Don't waste your time reading reviews for a deli bc TJ's is what you're looking for. The hero bread is extremely soft and like no other deli. All the sandwiches are amazing. Most delis don't do Italian hero's right anymore tj's does it right with "the works" which is all the Italian hero ingredients lettuce tomato salt pepper oil and vinegar, hot peppers, sweet peppers ect. I legit won't eat an Italian hero anywhere else. They let you order half heros as well. If you haven't had a Louisiana lightning you are missing out there's no other hero like it. Place pumps food out it is packed all the time and you still never have to wait. Staff is the friendliest. They have homemade chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies that are amazing. I've been going to TJ's for over 15 years. The sandwiches here are unmatched. Always fresh and always delicious. The bread is what makes it, it's better than the bread I've gotten at any other hero place. Do not skip on the iced tea, its super sweet and amazing! In all the times I've been to this place, they've never gotten my order wrong, not even once! They take credit cards now, it was cash only for years. The prices have gone up over the years, but it's still well worth it. The 3 sandwiches you must try here are the Louisiana Lightning, Manhattan and the New Yorker. I've been living in Patchogue for going on seven years and I kick myself after every time I eat a hero from this fine establishment that I only found it four years ago. It is purely heaven on a hero in a no-nonsense fashion. They have a pre-made list of their "Top Heroes" which are a wide variety, just look at the little blurb under each item and you'll know what awesomeness wrapped in paper you are going to get in the next 5 minutes. My personal favorites are the Pizza Hero and the Philly Cheesesteak. The Pizza Hero is a wonderful heart-stopper filled up with salami, pepperoni, cheese, meatballs and, of course, pizza sauce. I'm certain in comes in around 2000 calories for the full size and there's probably about 4000 grams of fat but it is taste bliss. Same for the Philly, except with only 3/4 of the calories. I'm no expert, I'm just going off what my brain says when I am chewing. The Philly is excellent too, offered with American, Swiss, or Mozzarella cheeses and very well shredded steak. I've tried it with every cheese offering and found all of them to be excellent. On a service related note, all the clerks and the owners are quick and efficient. I have nothing but positivity for them all. They are quick in taking your order and you can feel a palpable sense of urgency in getting your food ready and bagged. It's a touch missing sometimes from food establishments and it's not missed on me here. Tangentially, I also *love* the fact that the owners and employees will not take your order if you are one of those rude jerks that goes into a store talking on your cellphone. I have laughed heartily at people who get FURIOUS with them when they ignore them as they try to order whilst yapping about their most recent date or midterm or whatever and they go right to the next person on line in a brisk (if somewhat brusque) manner. They do not sacrifice other customers valuable time waiting for someone who is obviously being rude and is going to hold everyone up asking for their friend's opinion about what to eat while there are ten people on line behind them. The price range is right what you would expect for the quality of the food and service, being around $8 for a full hero. I get the iced tea they make even though I know it's just a powdered mix but for some damn reason, in their big styrofoam cup with ice it just tastes better than when I make it at home. I can't figure out why. I'd like someone else who feels the same way about their iced tea explain it to me. Please. On the con side: the place is small. Painfully so sometimes as everyone does kind of get packed in. If there are more than three or four people eating in, you are literally stuck standing. That's not a big deal obviously when you are getting it to go, but sometimes you just want to sit down and have a soda while you wait. Second negative is the Cash Only rule. More than one time I have had to bypass TJ's to go somewhere else on my way home because I realized I only had $8 in my pocket and that does not cover 2 heros and drinks. I am OCD about not using my bank's ATM so if I don't have the dinero I'm not going in. Overall, this is a fantastic spot. They do party catering too from what I have seen and I'm practically looking for an upcoming event at a friend's place with more space than mine so I can recommend TJ's and give their catering a shot. This is definitely high on my list of places to go for lunch or dinner when I'm in the homestead area. Enjoy! read more

TJ's Hero Shop II (TJ2)is a perfect example of the power of Yelp. I have to go to a baseball game for my son at St. Josephs Spots Complex in Patchogue, and my older son is hungry. I jump on Yelp and punch in Find Cheap Eats inn Patchogue, and TJ2 leapt off the page with its excellent reviews. Looking from the outside, I doubt I would have ever given this place a shot. But Yelpers know what they are doing, so in we go. I order the #25 full schmear Italian Hero. My son orders a #15 Big Steer, a meaty cheeseburger tucked into a hero bun. Every great sandwich has one thing in common. The bread. TJ2 uses great, incredibly fresh bread. A hero so soft it would double for a sponge. Pack it with incredibly fresh pepperoni, salami, cappy and provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil &vinegar, salt & pepper and a special order of just few hot peppers and you are talking a meal fit for Columbus. Everything has to be crazy fresh. We were there 15 minutes at 6PM and we saw at least 30 sandwiches go out the door. My son killed the Big Steer. He loved the whole 'Burger in a Hero' thing until he was left speechless. I also happen to be a total Pepsi guy, and the fridge was full of Pepsi products. Yay me! I really don't get it. It should just be called Subway or Blimpie. Maybe the pre-designed subs are popular, but the regular deli meat subs are standard issue. The bread is of the lowest quality, the meat & cheese is all Boar's Head, & nothing is homemade, for example, the meatballs. The tomatoes used are hardly ripe. 2018 has not arrived at TJ's Hero Shop in terms of good & healthy bread choices and higher level meats & cheeses that have more flavor. read more

Here it is, nearly 2017, and there's STILL no better place for heroes and all the trimmings than TJ's! The service is even faster, friendlier, and the heroes are even more delicious than ever (how is that EVEN possible, TJ's?). You don't have to believe me... just go in there - I guarantee it will be crowded with customers. Even so, I also guarantee you will be served quickly, and with a smile. Even the customers are all friendly to each other there, because looking forward to the prospect of a delicious hero sandwich on thick bread, with perfectly mixed dressing, great side salads, drinks, chips, and the works, it puts everyone in a good mood! If I was going to suggest one improvement for TJ's, it would be for them to start a customer appreciation card, where if you get so many ticket punches you get a free TJ's tee shirt. I know I'd wear mine. I want everyone to know TJ's ROCKS and I want them to stay in business, feeding me the best Italian heroes ever, for a long, long time to come! read more

OK, I haven't been here in about 10 years, but remeber it like it was yesterday. Mrs B has heard the stories more then once and asks " When are you going to take me?" Hopefully, our next visit to see my family. I usually had a #18, Chicken Cutlet Club, though I usually turned it up a notch and had it on garlic bread. I've eaten many a hero from many a place, and none compare to TJ's. I've only been to the Patchogue location, so I can't vouch for the others but since it's a close operation I would assume it would be similar. First off any hero here is amazing due to the great break they use, and you have a choice of white or whole wheat bread. I've had a few different hero's here and can say they have blown away any others. The Louisiana Lighting is the crack of the hero's with the Cajun sauce making you want another immediately. I love hot and spicy so this is good to me, but some with more delicate taste buds have said it's in the spicy side. Italian hero is the classic combo, and you must get it with the works (available on any hero includes lettuce, tomato, onion, oregano, oil, & vinegar). Their Turkey Club, Super Club, and American Special's are of the same high caliber. The most difficult part of going to TJ's is deciding which hero you'll order. I have a co-worker I regularly go with & we each order a different hero and swap halves. They have cole slaw, potato & macaroni salad available. If you've never had it before, try a small first, as it has a unique dressing that some do not like, but I always have to get some to go with the hero. They're closed Monday's, and on usually any day it's a good idea to call in your order since it can get pretty busy during lunch hour. Called in orders are usually ready in 10-15 minutes. read more

August 24, 2020. Tried to call in an order at 3:30 p.m. Called twice, phone rang endlessly both times with no answer each time. So had to go in and wait after my order taken. When my order was ready, it was thrown on the counter, then the clerk said Ok, ready. I took my other items and moved over by the register. Then the order for the woman behind me was ready, so she was called up the same time. What about social distancing? Did not exist in this store. So now this woman is right next to me, so I moved over to get away from her. She could have been called AFTER I left, correct? Then the quality of the hero. Negative! My hero was soggy not even 10 minutes later when I got home. I had to cut off the bottom of it. Do they put the oil and vinegar on first, then the meat? Third time I have been there in the past few months. I said cut ham and swiss very thin, I get the opposite. The first time I forget the issue, but I do remember I was disappointed in the order. What happened to getting a great hero sandwich? Back in the day? They were luscious. I cannot say that about TJ's. Plus a smile wouldn't help by the staff. Force yourselves. read more

Total garbage - worst service ever - actually barked at me. And last time I called ahead and ordered a Reuben hero. Just 1 - tell me why it took over 40 minutes? What place gets away with not taking credit cards in 2018?! And got forbid you forget cash their ATM will charge you up the butt to take out cash. I came here with my 10 pound dog in my arms (okay cool I get it food establishment doesn't want dogs- no big deal) that does not excuse someone pointing finger in my face and screaming at me. I love sandwiches, absolutely love them. So, what is the number one factor in making a good sandwich? Good bread. This place has GREAT bread!! I stopped in for the first time today after hearing about how great this place is, so I ordered an "Italian with the works". Salami, cappy, pepperoni, provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, oil and vinegar. I told them to hold the salt, pepper and oregano. The sandwich was roughly $10 but it's BIG. I assume they have a smaller size but my eyes, brain and appetite do not react well to "small" when it comes to sandwiches. When I got it home I opened it up and the sandwich was pretty tight, meaning that the components weren't falling out all over the bread. Also, the bread sopped up the oil and vinegar nicely. Anyone can make a sandwich using these ingredients but if the sandwich isn't tight and layered properly it's gonna disappoint. Oh yeah, and you need good bread. Or in T.J.'s case, GREAT bread. Hands down the best hero place I've ever been to, and "sandwich" is my favorite food. If you're ever in any of the areas where there is a TJ'S and you haven't yet tried them, you're doing yourself an injustice by not stopping in. When you do go in, try the Louisiana Lightning, Chicken Cutlet Club, or Super Club. I think what sets them apart from all other delis is their bread, but the deli meats are all fresh, and the flavor combinations with their sauces (e.g., stealth sauce) are unbeatable. I always tell my friends: if I'm having a bad day, TJ'S makes it better. If I'm having a great day, TJ'S makes it better. Moral of the story - TJ'S makes the best sandwich you'll ever eat. We got sandwiches here recently. They offer full subs and half size at half the price. A half sammie is definitely filling enough for one person, but the full one is lots of food, great if you're really hungry. The selection of sandwiches is pretty awesome too. One of the better sandwich shops on long island. Good bread is key and this spot excels in this department. The supersteak with gravy on the side for dipping never disappoints. The chicken club is also pretty damn good. I've seen some friends use TJ's to cater parties with platters of 1/4 cut heroes, all random from their menu. Guests always rave about the food. read more

If you've never tried TJ's, you are definitely missing out. TJ's premium heroes are truly tasty. The ingredients used are always fresh, and that makes for a great quality hero. My biggest dilemma when I go there is having to choose among all of the excellent heroes. The choices range from the very meaty (like the Super Steak) to the lighter (Waist Watcher.) One of my favorites is the Louisiana Lightening, which is accented with their special spicy stealth sauce. The staff is very friendly and work very fast and efficiently. When I was growing up Campus Heros in Selden was the place to get a 5 star hero, heck it was the only place other than your local pizzeria back in the day. TJ's cold heros are close to what Campus used to be. (Campus moved to Belle Meade Rd then closed its doors) :( TJ's uses excellent fresh bread and fresh ingredients. TJ's also has an entire board of hot sandwiches with names like the Manhattan and the Long Islander and both of these heros are quite good, not to die for, but really good. Speaking of dying, a steady diet of these heros could speed the death process along even if you do get the whole wheat bread- just sayin... We were in the mood for meatball heroes so my husband drove to DelFiore in Patchogue not knowing they close at 6. So he went to TJ's hero shop instead. The meatballs on this hero were Kirkland frozen meatballs that you can buy at Costco...and they were cold. This is a hero shop and they use frozen Kirkland meatballs? I've had better meatball heroes at the drive-in movie. They have a great rating so somebody must be enjoying their heroes. Not me. read more
