Yummy food that's much more health-conscious that typical Mexican food. I was working at the library next door (Washington and Rural intersection, near the Lighthouse shelter) and noticed that this formerly blighted building had a fresh coat of paint. When I was leaving the library I walked over to check it out and saw a little sign advertising Mexican food. New, you say? Restaurant, you say? Naturally, I walked right in...without even consulting Yelp! Such a daredevil, I am. I had 2 tamales, salsa, and a Jarritos and my total was $8.50. The tamales are made with olive oil, not lard, and there are vegetarian and VEGAN options! My vegetarian friends are always worried that their beans have been seasoned with pork fat, so it's nice to find a place that doesn't use this ingredient. I also tried some charro beans (pintos with SOY chorizo) and they were very tasty. The downside is there is only one seat so you really need to take your food to-go. Not one table, one seat. SUPER clean little restaurant, you can see the entire operation when you come in the front door. I had a nice chat with the owner about where he was from, his life "pre-Tlaolli," and some of the places we had traveled to. Nice guy, great food, I'll be back whenever I'm in the area, I'm sure. Tamale options are pinto bean (vegan), pork, chicken, or cheese and poblano (vegetarian). There are also soups, quesadillas, and some entrees/specials. I'd like to come back to try the chicken mole because I have yet to find a mole that doesn't taste like it came from an envelope here in Indy. read more

We were in a more questionable area of town, but when hunger strikes, you must answer! We found this little gem on yelp and decided to try it out based on the phenomenal reviews. When we first pulled up, we did a drive around and weren't sure we were going to go in. It's a very small place and we weren't sure what to think. Again, though, our tummies were demanding sustenance so we exited the car. There were cute little picnic tables out back where customers could enjoy their meals. We encountered a few people who had just finished and they were literally licking their fingers describing how delicious it was! We made our way to the front and were immediately inundated with the smell of delicious food! We consulted the menu and decided on chicken tacos and tamales and chips and salsa (both kinds). The man who I'm assuming was the owner provided us with a picnic caddy and informed us our meals would be brought to our table shortly. We made our way out back and in only a few minutes, our food followed! We were given extra guacamole (no charge) and he came back once to check on our food. The tacos, muy delicioso! A little bit of spice, expected of a taco, but with moist chicken and fresh ingredients. My husband had never had tamales before, and his first experience did Not disappoint! Still not sure what's in them, but I can tell you that whatever it is is phenomenal! The salsa was fantastic as well and the chips were freshly made. If you get the chance to visit this delightful little place, do it! Don't hesitate, your taste buds will thank you! On a Friday afternoon I found Tlaolli had a food booth set up inside Flat 12 Bierwerks. They offered three kinds of tamales. I tried the Cheese & Poblano tamales with both kinds of salsa, and everything was delicious. My husband tried one of the beef tamales and actually liked mine better. Give me one of everything por favor! A coworker keeps raving about this place so we finally got some for lunch today. It's makes a perfect lunch stop since its mainly a take out place. We just about ordered everything on the menu and all sampled it. I'm not a tamale fan, but these were actually quite good. Made me rethink my previous aversion to tamales! Quesadillas are my jam and these sure hit the spot. Personal favorite was the one with chorizo pork and poblano cheese. The red mole chicken was fantastic with its unexpected hit of nuttiness! The guacamole was good. My coworkers were eating it up and talked about it being the most authentic and best they'd had. So I heard these were the best tacos in Indiana.... and they live up to the hype! The chipotle chicken tacos were amazing and tasted so fresh and were packed full of chicken and other toppings! We were so excited to try Tlaolli! The reviews on Yelp were amazing and I love a place that specializes in Tamales. We ordered a pack of tamales to freeze and eat later as well as tacos for dinner. The most interesting menu item they have is the Hibiscus meat substitute. I ordered one of their hibiscus tacos and it was brightly flavored and delicious. The other tacos were decent as well but nothing particularly special. The tamales were awesome! We got the beef jalapeño pack and ate through them over the next several days. They are not made with Lard which was concerning at first, but somehow they weren't dry for it! The big disappointment at Tlaolli was the hibiscus drink. It is not Jamaica or sorrel and is so sour we had to bring it home and water it down. Maybe it'll be your thing, but I was hoping for a more classic take on the drink. read more

I've been a frequenter if this amazing little gem for over a year and I can not recommend it enough. Ingredients are fresh and healthy, the recipes are authentic, and with so many great options on the menu, I'm never disappointed! There are classics like chicken mole and pork asado and tamales, as well as delicious and unique vegan and vegetarian options. The best thing on the menu, if you ask me, is the Habiscus taco. So glad to have finally experienced Tlaolli! I had been seeing some of their vegetarian offerings on Instagram and took the opportunity to stop in for lunch on my birthday. The team at Tlaolli really made it special. The menu is creative and thoughtful. They are eager to talk you through the entire menu if you'd like. There are a lot of vegetarian options - I had never had hibiscus as a meat substitute and it was amazing. Everything was fresh and had an obvious caring quality about it. Eating at Tlaolli is like instantly becoming family. They even surprised me with a birthday dessert and the entire staff came out to sing happy birthday. This place is to die for. I'm vegetarian and I have soooooo many options here. There are so many options for vegans and those without dietary restrictions as well. It's truly incredible. I love the fusion of the cuisine, it's impeccable. The Vegetarian molletes are life changing. And I'm not kidding. I get them every time and share them w/ my partner. I was a bit skeptical about the concept (beans, soyrizo, jalapeño crema, pickled onion etc all on a baguette sliced in half) but it's seriously amazing. Pop that baby in the oven or air fryer for a few and it reheats soooo nicely as well. The tamales are so delicious, I love the roasted poblano when I'm feeling like treating myself and I loveeeeeeee the "NoNoNo" and pinto bean tamales as well. The salsa verde is just so good. I recently tried one of the tacos (NoNoNo) and it was also so damn good. I have yet to try the jackfruit, hibiscus or tofu mole tacos but am planning on it ASAP. The tacos are pretty big on average, the tamales seem standard. I love the varieties of products sold here. Today I had the vegan chocolate cake and let me tell you.... it is worth way more than $4.50. This sh*t is incredible. You cannot tell at all that it's vegan, and that's coming from me, who is a vegan baker. It is so moist, the icing is so perfectly chocolatey and rich..... I would come here just for the cake if I wasn't hungry. Service is always fast, friendly and convenient. Due to COVID the store is closed off to only employees (huge f*cking claps to the management for valuing their employees and setting up these kind of precautions!!!!) so you simply order online or over the phone, park in the library parking lot which is right next door, call the restaurant and tell them your name and the kind of car you drive, and the order is brought out to you. Tlaolli is a small house on Washington, if you blink you could pass it, but I highly suggest not blinking! This restaurant is incredible. The flavors are multifaceted, their portions are generous and they have offerings for every diet and taste buds. I got the NoNoNo and Tofu taco, both outstanding! My husband got the NoNoNo taco and two chicken tamales, he devoured his whole plate! We shared the small guacamole and small mild salsa. My only suggestion is either get your own or get a large because both were amazing. Tlaolli (Tla-o-li) is the best taco restaurant in Indy, hands down. The local owner always seems to be in the restaurant cooking up a storm. The tacos are sort of obscure, but totally worth a try. My favorite is the no no no taco that is vegetarian and has so much flavor. If I'm being honest, I did not like the hibiscus taco. I also have enjoyed their entrées that come with a bed of rice and a protein. I love it that the entrées also come with tortillas, which makes it easy to make your own tacos.
