One of my favorite authentic style Mexican restaurants in Indy area. The atmosphere is festive and open very tall ceilings and neat decor. The staff is usually pretty friendly and they have a pretty large bar in the back. As well as a neat side patio area for nicer evenings to dine outside. The food is always made very well, I love their pulled chicken tamales fresh n topped with sauce n beef . The bean burritos , tostadas, and cheese enchiladas are great too. The red sauces flavors are rich n taste authentic, darker and flavorful! The queso is great for chips or on top of entrees, they also have some nice house margs and I always ask for tajín rim for a lil extra flavor! Chips n salsa taste so fresh here too! Like to come here for dates or with friends to celebrate. was fun goin on cinco de mayo despite them being slammed and slower which was to be expected all of our food and drinks still came out great! I have been here several times because the food is pretty good, but this is the first time actually looking at the receipt. So I'm not sure if they have charged for these things before or not. But if you look at the receipt, they charged $1.25 for lemons and an additional $1.25 for Limes. Upon asking for the extra lemon for my water and the extra lemon for my tacos, the server never stated that there would be an up charge for these items. And I've never in my life been charged for extra lemon and lime at a restaurant. Additionally, and they charge for an extra salsa because what they served us initially was a half full bowl. I can confidently say that I will not be returning to this location If you do decide to go here, I would just make sure that you ask if things going to be an additional charge or if you get your receipt thoroughly look at it before paying. I went to this place to order 3 steak taco supreme and chips queso. The tacos was terrible couldn't chew the steak and had no Flavor no cheese or sour cream like I ordered the chip were cold and the queso's was runny like they water it down. I've driven by this place so many times, but have not seen a lot of recent reviews or a ton of photos, so I was always hesitant to stop in. I love their salsa! Good salsa makes a big difference and theirs is one of my favorites. They also have great fajitas.

Pretty good experience here with my family. Staff still wearing face masks which makes me as the customer more comfortable. Service was quick and the food was hot and good. The portions are a nice size too. It was very nice sitting outside on the patio they have set up. The inside is nice too with a small "candy store" they have set up at the pay counter. So, new owners, no more Carnitas Botana (or off menu ordering). My change in rating is not because they refused to make something that was not on the menu, but rather because there was zero attempts to accommodate or offer any suggestion, only a "No, we don't make that." As I perused the menu, I saw a Shrimp entree that was described much like the one I requested. I asked my server if carnitas could be substituted and, what do you know, my order was complete. Yes, I paid more for the camarón dish, despite my sub, but I got what I requested. The carnita portions were ample, but there was a substantial difference in avocados from my first visit, as you can clearly see in the photos. The latest addition to a new strip center at Fall Creek Parkway and Emerson, La Cantina Mexican Restaurant inhabits the end spot of the strip center that includes Subway, Great Clips and, in the near future, American Pizza Company. While this particular neighborhood isn't exactly known as a culinary paradise, La Cantina is a welcome addition to the culturally diverse area that has come to life since, surprisingly enough, the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market opened up and put some spark in an area that had really crashed in recent years. La Cantina advertises that it serves "authentic Mexican cuisine," though that same phrase can probably be found on the menu of most area Mexican restaurants. With a full-bar behind a divider wall and two separate rooms that are warmly decorated in traditional Mexican decor, La Cantina feels a lot more authentic than one might expect from a strip center Mexican joint. La Cantina just opened on 3/19/17 and you can tell they're still sort of getting a rhythm. It's not super clear when you enter whether or not you're supposed to wait to be seated - as I entered, no one was at the front door and I seated myself at a table with an obvious spot for a wheelchair. They have a nice mixture of booths and tables in the dining area. After watching a few other customers, I got the sense I probably should have waited but my server, whose name I didn't catch, never said anything and I did receive service pretty quickly. The menu's not yet available online - it's a comprehensive menu with both traditional and rather experimental fare. They have a variety of Mexican dishes including those that are fish, chicken, shrimp, steak and veggie-based. As seems to be mandatory at any Mexican restaurant, you receive chips & salsa and I was pleasantly surprised that the salsa actually had a bit of a kick to it. I ordered my usual unsweetened iced tea - they serve soft drinks and have what looked like a full bar plus, of course, the obligatory margaritas. After browsing the multi-page menu, I opted for the Arroz Con Pollo, strips of grilled chicken with cheese and in rice. It's a familiar dish for me and one I typically enjoy quite a bit. My server was friendly and outgoing with a relaxed friendliness that I enjoyed after a long day at work. It seemed like all the employees were quite similar, though I'd say this particular server was the most outgoing. Having previously noted that La Cantina had opened, I've been pleased that they seem to be doing a pretty steady early business. I will note that as I was leaving, one person who'd ordered take-out actually returned the meals because she felt like they lacked flavor. I'll also note this same customer parked illegally in a disabled parking spot and had expired plates - so, take that for what you will. Personally? I was happy. With pricing somewhat in line with Lincoln Square across the street, meaning mostly over $10 but easily less than $20, La Cantina isn't fast food Mexican and as is always true you can add to that bill if you drink. There's a garage door on the side of the building that would indicate a plan for outdoor dining once the warmer weather hits. My Arroz Con Pollo was delicious. It was a healthy serving with a nice combination of the rice and grilled chicken. I got my always desired refill and even got offered more chips & salsa even as I'd finished my meal but was lingering a bit. It was nice to be encouraged to linger. Typically, you pay as you leave at a cash register. That said, my server seemed willing to handle it if I preferred it that way. As a brand new strip center, this area is easily wheelchair accessible with two accessible parking spots directly in front of La Cantina - one with the blue strips for better access (unless some moron parks in that spot). La Cantina Mexican Restaurant, which is the name they have on their Facebook page even though it says "Mexican Grill" actually on the restaurant, was a pleasant surprise with winning service, good food, a pleasing atmosphere and fair pricing. While it certainly won't became an everyday hangout, it gives those in the area a terrific option and may even become a bit of an Eastside destination spot. La Cantina is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner but like most area businesses it closes at 10pm most days - I believe 10:30pm on weekend nights. They do take reservations and also have a catering option. read more

Not only was I told that the dinner special that I specifically ordered hasn't been available "for the past 4 years", but also that I can either "decide to pay it or not". I wish i lived so much closer to here. Id be here everyday! The salsa is so good, not watered down, not chunky, not to spicy, not to mild. We were helped immediately and got our order in within a minute or two of being seated. We got refills on chips, salsa and our drinks before they even fully ran out! The food was on our table within 10 minutes of being seated! And the food itself was incredible.. Bean burritos are normally always very plain, just beans and red sauce. This place finally did what no one else has thought to do yet. Add rice into the burrito! And lettuce and tomatoes ect. It looked good and tasted better. The beer i got was so fresh and they actually filled it to the top! Not one of those 30oz with 2oz of the head. This was a 5 star experience from start to finish. Good job! read more

For what it was worth and all that I came in for, they did a great job. I came in to pass time until I went to get lady fresh and stopped in for a beer. The staff assisted me immediately. Dope. What was interesting was they had a bar that had people sitting there already but their bar is still almost considered as a table and not so much a bar. They woman behind the bar did not wait on me someone else did which is totally fine just a note. I was asked if I wanted a small or large beer and I assumed a can or a 16oz something like that so I said large. This beer came out and I felt like Fred Flinstone! The beer was 32oz huge no problem. I love it when new restaurants pop up and tonight we had to try this one. It's been open for about a month now which means any opening kinks have been worked out by now. And we weren't the only ones. The place seems to be drawing people in. We were greeted right away and seated shortly afterwards. The server was at our table before we were in our chairs armed with chips and salsa and ready for our drink orders The chips came out warm but were a little thicker than I normally like. The salsa is not for the faint of heart -- it definitely has a kick. My husband also ordered a side of ranch for the chips. I wasn't a fan of the ranch. Next time we will try their queso instead. We split the steak and shrimp which are covered in mushrooms, onions and a scrumptious cheese sauce (which if I didn't have manners I would have licked clean off the plate--but I was able to restrain myself. ) The steak was a lower grade steak and was a bit fatty. Next time I plan on seeing if they have a just shrimp version of the dish. That would be perfection. Their guacamole​, Mexican rice and refried beans were all pretty traditional and all had good flavor. They have outdoor seating and garage doors on one wall that make it an open air restaurant in the summer. read more

This was my first time to this restaurant. Like many who have posted before me, I live in the area and I am glad to see this area get some social commercial love. Now, I will be honest. Cancun on Keystone is my fave when it comes to Mexican food with hospitality. Although La Cantina did well, it didn't trump the way the way I felt as a customer at Cancun. The fajitas were delicious and plentiful. Both of my margaritas -- Milagro and Sangria -- were tasty. Although I would like the Sangria one if I had a to choose. The bartender was a nice guy as was my waitress. The problem? They weren't there! Very sporadic! Thankfully my meal was fine. Plenty of parking but you need to enter off Fall Creek, not 56th St. Interior decor was pleasing, space was big and open and bright yet comfortable. Service was quick and attentive. We got our drinks quickly and food came out lightning fast and hot! I enjoyed a 16oz pina colada which was delicious. Food was also very good quality, well seasoned and large portions. Staff checked on us throughout the meal. Menu was huge so you will always be able to find something no matter what you're in the mood for that day. They also had rotating local beers. We had a terrible experience. Never had dined at La Cantina before and was in the neighborhood. only a few tables were active in the restaurant. Was greeting promptly and seated. Ordered $4.99 margarita special and had so much ice literally only had 4 sips and was empty. Ordered shrimp tacos and asked if i would like tomato and lettuce. Was charged additional $.99 (without my knowledge). Food took about 30 minutes to be served for two of us, with only a few active tables. Salsa was very runny and not very flavorful. Food was very, very average. No music playing, bathroom sink water was freezing and hand dryer was cold. Just not a positive experience. read more

The photos and reviews are great for this place but my experience today was very meh. I think I'll have to try it on person as opposed to having food delivered. The order seemed very thrown together and was mostly cold when I got it. Too much cheese sauce on the nachos and none in the break and cheese dip, so I'm not sure what was up. I also paid for extra salsa and cheese but didn't get those. I just don't think delivery orders are very important to them so I'll give it a shot in person before forming a full opinion. read more

A new Mexican restaurant in this area provides a welcomed dining option. One of the nice features is that near the bar they have retracting garage door walls that open up to a large patio area where I can only envision some tables and chairs outside filled with people sipping margaritas in warmer weather. The space is one of the end spots in a new business strip, and so the interior is nice and new and comfortable. The menu is typical of the deluge of other Mexican restaurants all over the city with the usual daily specials. We had a taco special and an enchilada plate along with a margarita and a beer. Everything was ok, but there were just different aspects that were lacking when comparing other Mexican places that we really like. For example, the margarita was a little weak. The tacos came with a sauce on the side that was thick, almost like it had flour in it. That was just different. The enchilada plate I ordered said it came with Maya sauce over it. I asked two different people what that was, and they really couldn't tell me. My personal preference for enchiladas are corn tortillas and a traditional ranchero sauce. So, they said they could use the ranchero sauce. Well, maybe I should have stuck with the Maya sauce because the ranchero sauce didn't quite taste like the traditional flavor. It tasted like a sweet tomato sauce almost like a Pomodoro sauce for pasta. Also the tortillas on the enchiladas didn't seem like corn tortillas. Ok, I admit it. I'm a sucker for advertising. When Yelp sent me an email about a "Hot new restaurant near by" I made plans to come for dinner. We walked in a hour 6:45 on. Thursday night and it was about half full, with more people coming in. They have a nice mix of seating (tables and booths in the dining room, bar seating). They have two large garage doors on the side that open on to a spacious patio, but they were closed tonight. The decor is very cute and gives the appearance of a Mexican courtyard. The service was pretty good. Servers were helping each other taking orders and bringing food and drinks. (this did create some initial confusion for us about who our server was). They had chips and salsa on our table with seconds of being seated and had our drinks out before we'd even looked at the menu. The chips were thicker than we care for, but warm and fresh. The salsa was very good, but more of the medium to hot variety than most places. We split the Steak and Shrimp entree and added a tamale. The shrimp were very well prepared and the onion-mushroom-cheese sauce on top of the steak was awesome. The steak tasted pretty good but was a very tough/fatty lower grade of beef. I don't think I would get this dish again. But if I could substitute a grilled chicken breast for the steak it could be great. The tamale was pretty good. I would say that it's one of my favorite places for Mexican food in this part of town. Certainly better than the La Hacienda places around us. read more
