Grilling thick slices of pork belly with aged kimchi on a hot iron lid was absolutely amazing. We also tried their yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) for the first time, and it was just as impressive. Finally tried this place after driving past it so many times, and wow... total hidden gem The pork jawl was thick-cut and insanely good. We came here around 5:00 pm on a weekday and the door was locked, but we were relieved because the owner was inside and she let us in...perhaps we were first customers of the day? I love the family operation type vibe, and I was pretty impressed that the lady was able to handle everything on her own until an additional person came to help towards the end of our meal. Kudos to you ma'am! We ordered the pork belly, gochujang jigae (spicy pepper paste soup), steamed egg, and kimchi pancake. Everything was good in terms of taste, except for the kimchi pancake, which was a little too sour for me. I also thought overall it was a little pricey considering the smaller portions on the pork belly, the fact that they don't cook for you, and that there's no extras like kimchi fried rice at the end. Overall I guess it was a good dinner, and we left stuffed and satsifed with our "expensive" meal lol. The only meat that should be cooked on a Korean traditional cauldron lid shape grill is pork belly. Don't come at me. Although it wasn't the best pork belly I've had, the side dishes and the soybean paste soup was. They serve marinated bean sprouts and spring green onion kimchi to grill alongside the meat .. and for all my Koreans out there, you know this means business. A bit disappointed :( I came here about 2 years ago and really enjoyed all the side dishes and food. However, when I ate here the other day, it was not the same experience... Service: The owner, we believe, asked us what we wanted without giving us the menu. Then when we were cooking the meat and had nothing on the pan, she rudely shouted at us that the pan will burn if we did not have anything on it. The part that really surprised me was, that she disappeared during our meal.. So i had to chase her down in the parking lot to ask her for more sides.. They even have a make shift bamboo wall on the outdoor patio seating to cover the ugliness of the ghetto neighborhood. Here's a couple thing that you will have to be aware off when you come here. One, there's no ventilation for smoke that is coming out of the BBQ grill. Two, there are only have dozen tables for BBQ. So get ready to fight for a table if you are going there for BBQ. Pork fat rules. Toad House specializes in Korean Barbecue, not just that, they specialize in black pork belly. Yes, it's bacon, glorious, thick, fatty, DELICIOUS bacon. Our combo for two came with 4 slabs of black pork belly, it was like crack, it was so good. I was full at the end of the meal, but I almost flagged down the waiter and asked him to bring me two more slabs and charge me whatever they wanted, it was so good. It's a bit pricey, about $65 for two for a good dinner combination, but it was so worth it and I, a big, 6 foot tall hungry guy, was stuffed. A waiter revealed that the pork was treated with a secret wine marinade, and thus the addictively flavorful pork that you cannot get sick of. They also served ribs and side dishes with the combo, and also had some alcohol thrown in for good measure. Hey, I don't usually order alcohol with my meat, but if you toss it in, I'll drink to that! I asked for togo box to take left over fried rice, and she told me she has no togo box at all, so I asked for plastic bags and she said no. Pork fan? Then you'll probably love this place to bits. The three of us sat down for a nice, leisurely meal here last weekend. We showed up right before 9 on a Sunday night, and the place was totally empty. The menu is pretty heavy on the swine, but they have these nice set menus with meat, appetizers, and alcohol (2 bottles of soju per set meal, but we opted for 1 soju and 1 Hite). The banchan was bomb, and it came with a steamed egg custard, leek pancake, and salad that rivaled Gui Rim's in its taste, freshness, and quality. Service was attentive, but it may have been due to the total lack of patrons. We were also allowed to smoke indoors, which is probably one of the #1 reasons why I love KBBQ so much. Overall, this was a very nice dining experience. Next time, I'll probably come back with more peeps and order some non-pork-related items off the appetizer menu. Pork Belly and brisket combo with a bottle of soju is super cheap to begin with. not your typical brisket.. less fatty, very unrefined cuts of meet that may be a bit chewier than what we are used to with brisket. but it works. it perfectly works with the streets of LA happening pass the thin walls next to you where cars are passing by, sirens going off here and there, minimal people chatting and laughing and on those lucky days when you get rain? it is absolutely amazing. Owner of the restaurant is very nice and sweet~ make sure you get chungyup sal which looks like pork jowl but a bit different if you want to order something more on top of your combo. Two and a half stars. A friend who's a fan of the swine suggested we try Toad House. We ordered a combo that had pork belly, pork trotters, leek pancake and soju. We also added a pollock stew. The panchan was standard issue but I thought the pork belly was very good. The leek pancake was nothing special and a bit too greasy. That was where the meal effectively ended for me. Though I've eaten pig's feet many times and dare say I like it, depending on the preparation, I did not care for the ones Toad House served. It's served cold, thinly sliced like deli meat. It wasn't inedible but just didn't do anything for me. No one at the table cared for it. As for the pollock stew, that also did nothing for me. The soup tasted like kim chee, which I like, but I have a strong adversion to whole fish. Something about staring down at a whole fish makes me lose my appetite. The configuration of the restaurant is interesting. Most of the tables are in an area that looks like it's inside but is really an outdoor area that is covered on all sides. I didn't really realize that until I saw other patrons smoking at their tables. BIG NO-NO for me. The last thing I want to do is eat dinner next to someone who's polluting my airspace. So gross. I thought my experience at Toad House was marred by inexperienced ordering and I am considering a return trip to try other items on the menu. The smoking policy might deter me though... read more
