I first discovered Chicken Day last June. One of my daughter's friend's moms brought it to a swimming pool party, and at first, I thought it would just be regular party food. I mean, chicken is chicken, right? But the moment I casually picked up a piece of boneless chicken and took a bite, a little alarm went off in my head. "Wait a minute... what is this chicken?" It was completely different from any boneless fried chicken I had ever eaten before. The outside was perfectly crispy, while the meat inside was unbelievably soft, tender, and juicy. Boneless chicken can sometimes be dry, tough, or overly greasy, but Chicken Day's boneless chicken had the perfect balance. Crispy and crunchy on the outside! Soft, moist, and tender on the inside! After one bite, I could not tell whether I had come to a swimming pool party or a private fried chicken tasting event. I was supposed to be watching the kids play, but somehow, my eyes kept drifting back toward the chicken box. And that is not even the end of the story. There is one thing at Chicken Day that you absolutely cannot ignore. Their house sauce. This sauce is seriously dangerous. At first glance, it looks a little like Korean sweet and spicy fried chicken sauce, but once you taste it, it is definitely different. It is sweet, slightly tangy, savory, and somehow makes you want to keep dipping piece after piece. Honestly, this sauce is so difficult to explain. The more I try to describe it, the more confused I become. It tastes a little like Korean seasoned chicken sauce, but somehow better. It tastes familiar, yet completely special. You dip one piece lightly, and by the next piece, you are completely covering the chicken in sauce. There is really only one conclusion. You simply have to try it for yourself. The moment you taste it, you will understand why I gave up trying to explain it. It is one of those flavors that your tongue understands before your brain can find the right words. When you dip the crispy boneless chicken into that house sauce and take a bite, it feels like a small festival is happening inside your mouth. You tell yourself that you are only going to eat one piece, but suddenly you have eaten two, then three, and before you know it, you are quietly watching everyone around you to make sure nobody takes the last piece. I discovered Chicken Day by chance at a swimming pool party, but ever since that day, I have continued thinking about the soft chicken, the crispy coating, and that unforgettable house sauce. And now, while writing this review, I want it again. This is becoming a serious problem. The more I write about this chicken, the more my mouth seems ready to leave the house and head directly to Chicken Day. I guess there is no need to think about dinner tonight. I am going back to Chicken Day to buy more chicken! Perfectly crispy boneless chicken with incredibly tender and juicy meat inside, paired with a house sauce that is almost impossible to describe but absolutely impossible to forget. The soy sauce drowns out that thought for sure. French fries and chicken tenders are also on par with fast food but for late night it will do. Here we paid $20 for 10 wings (it came with a small side of coleslaw and a small side of radish). The lady who rang up our order was super nice and the chicken was made pretty quickly, and fresh! When going into a Korean fried chicken joint, you have to expect to pay a premium for the chicken. Chicken Day is tucked into a small strip mall off of Western. Luckily we went on a slower Sunday night so there was parking on the upper lot. The menu is surprisingly simple and has many offerings. We opted to get the sweet and spicy wings, cabbage salad and the chicken soup. The wing sizes were really huge which justifies the price for the 10 piece. Can't really mess up a cabbage salad and they gave you a lot, but for the price, it seemed excessive. The coup de gras was the chicken soup. A whole chicken, just about the size of a Cornish Game Hen in a mild broth. But the surprising part was the way the chicken was cooked. They stuff the cavity with tons of garlic, what looked to be a chestnut...in the broth itself was a ton of green onions and what looked like a long root of some kind. There was some rice in the broth but the best part was this; as you tear apart the chicken, all of the garlic, green onions and chicken skin create a stronger broth taste. They added $7 to deliver 3 blocks away and would have tacked on another $4 if I didn't pay cash, so overall not the best value. Next time will try a more adventurous menu option.
