I decided to try the La Mesa Toasted after not having the greatest experience at the Carlsbad location. First, I'll just say that I absolutely love that you can join the waitlist on Yelp as you head over to shorten the wait! By the time we arrived, we were promptly seated. They have a big patio area, outdoor/indoor style dining open walls but under the roof, which I really like with our warm San Diego weather! Our server was very kind and welcoming, she us recommendations and was super understanding when I ordered something I didn't like. I asked for a dirty chai latte but the chai was extremely sweet and artificial tasting. I rarely send things back but I really disliked this so I opted for a regular latte instead and thought that was much better! For brunch, I ordered the Cali Benny and was very pleased. I can be very indecisive and was debating over a few different items but I was happy. I loved that there was a TON of avocado on this and the pesto hollandaise was really good too! The interior of the restaurant felt kind of dark since they were mostly relying on natural light from the big windows in front. We got the Elvis French Toast and the Denverish Scramble. The indoor patio area is encased in glass letting in abundant sunlight. The window overlooks the parking lot, but greenery outside is enough to take focus off the cars. The aroma of bacon had us yearning to get started with breakfast. On the menu and then on our check we noticed a 5% surcharge added to bill. I personally don't agree with surcharges. In addition to the coffee, the food was also cold. Every single dish we got was cold. Which makes me think they have it just sitting there, since they are so busy and understaffed, they aren't bringing it out right away. The eggs Benedict had one runny egg and one overcooked, we did address this with them and they did bring back a new one and comped the dish for us. I tried the shrimp and grits, which was good, but also has potential to be better, the grits weren't a silky texture and were more lumpy. I believe this used to be a location of Sammy's Woodfired Pizza before the owner (Sammy) decided to convert the place to one of his breakfast concepts, Toasted Gastrobrunch. The suite was situated in an awkward spot along a narrow roadway parallel to the MTS trolley tracks. As a result, the parking situation was not optimal with numerous spaces limited to 20 minutes and signs directing you to go to the parking structure of a neighboring apartment complex, The District. The inside was bright and spacious with lots of colorful flowers and plants adorning the ceiling and walls. I took a seat at the bar which was located in the back of the dining area adjacent to the kitchen. A two-page laminated menu sheet was already at each place setting. One side featured beverages that ranged from cocktails, wine, beer, bloody marys, mimosas, juices, bellini, coffee, and tea. You name a drink, and they seemed to have it. Happy hour was from 4 to 6 pm daily which featured $2 off beer, wine, and liquor. The food offerings on the other side of the menu consisted of the following categories... Eggs, Pancakes, French Toast, Bennys, South of the Border, Toasts, Sandwiches, and Desserts. The prices seemed to be on the higher end of what I have seen for a brunch venue, but Toasted was more upscale than an average diner. My pick was a Denver-ish Scramble ($18) that was made up of scrambled eggs, Canadian bacon, Portuguese linguica sausage, tomatoes, bell peppers, red onions, cheddar, and parmesan truffle potatoes. The highlight was the last item which were little balls of fried potatoes like mini hush puppies. I concur with some other reviewers who said the food took a while to be prepared by the kitchen. They were not super busy during my visit, but my dish probably would have been whipped up quicker at another breakfast joint. Because I sat at the bar, more than one server took care of me as the girl who took my order was not the same as the one who cashed me out. I'm not a coffee drinker, I'm a tea drinker. The iced tea I ordered tasted like it was brewed to order. It was so fresh, so strong. The highlight of our meal was the bacon eggs Benedict we split. Imagine your dad makes the best eggs Benedict, every holiday, now imagine that that Benedict is adopted by a restaurant, maybe somewhere in La Jolla and is further amplified by the lead chef. That's what this tasted like. It was authentic, it was creamy, it was absolutely delicious. The side tots it was served with were THE BEST TOTS ive ever had. I'd just hold the cheese next time. Tried this place for brunch on Saturday around 1100 and it was great! They don't take reservations before 1430, but you can join the live waitlist via Yelp. Your entire party needs to be there to be seated. This place is located right next door to Banbu Sushi. Small parking lot right in front of the restaurant and more parking in the next lot over. Servers were very welcoming and friendly. The restaurant itself is pretty spacious, cute, and cozy. Definitely recommend giving this place a try if you're in the area. I stopped in for an early dinner and had the Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwich off the brunch menu since it was before 4 p.m., and the dinner was not available yet. The chicken tasted pretty good, but I was very confused about why they put three chicken tenders in the sandwich rather than one large chicken breakfast. The individual tenders made the sandwich difficult to eat. Every time I picked up the sandwich, the tenders would fall out. It made eating the sandwich, like a "sandwich," a difficult experience. The chicken tenders had good flavor, but they were a little on the dry side. They need to better execute this sandwich.The sauce that came on the sandwich was tasty, but the were the pickles were too flaccid and not crisp. The fries had a nice color on them and were crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. However, they were well over seasoned with salt. I could only eat about a fourth of them because of the heavy iodized salt. At any rate, they should use better quality salt, in my opinion. Service was friendly enough, but more interaction would be good. As I walked out the door, two employees, one I think, were a manager, and there was no engagement. They sell a lot of hollandaise sauce and one companion's short-rib benny looked good. Another companion got the French toast but it was served without butter; she had to ask. A decaf cappuccino was served with cinnamon already on it, unasked for, but otherwise ok. My order was a standard smoked salmon on toast, in this case served with pickled onion, capers, jalapeño cream cheese and capers. I asked for the truffle parmesan potatoes to be extra crispy and it did not disappoint us. I would recommend those bad boys in a heartbeat. My husband had the Elvis French toast. His bacon seems slightly undercooked. For the French toast, I would prefer for them to be crispy especially when they are stuff inside. He thought the bananas were overpowering the dish while I thought it was too much peanut butter. With the honey at the bottom, it made the dish really sweet. For me, I would be ok without the syrup. Finally, the customer service. The man who greeted us, may have been the manager. He had a great smile when greeting us. Our server was not attentive at all. We saw her briefly after our food came. Our water cups were empty. Never came to check if I needed more coffee or if we needed anything else. She finally came at the end with the card reader. She said she got stuck in their main room with a table that consisted of a family that didn't speak English. I hope they incorporate customer training because they have the potential. Allyson was our server, I felt that she didn't really go over the menu. Honestly, I felt she wasn't that much engaged with us and wanted to take our order and leave. The one item that I will go back for are the truffle potato balls which are perfection. I have had a short rib hash, the lobster scramble/omelet? And coffee cake pancakes. Those were a bit dry and didn't come with butter or anything. They were ok. The other meals I had were so unmemorable I literally have no recollection of them. Every time I go it's because I remember the potatoes, but then after I regret paying so much for mediocre everything else. I'm curious if other locations are any better. The one time I did dine in with my parents they brought my dad a mug with lipstick on it and didn't notice. The service was pretty lacking so I did takeout after. TOASTED La Mesa Tried a new Brunch spot today and it exceeded my expectations. First thing is I love that you can join the waitlist prior to arriving. When I got there the staff welcomed me and let me know once my party arrived our table should be ready. It was a nice atmosphere with a great playlist. I love that their menu is small (because too many options make it more difficult to narrow down a decision). Eric (was one of the managers who waited our table) was attentive and when we asked for items he provided them without hesitation. We came for the drinks but the FOOD...well read below... Now for the food...it's not too often where I can say that everything that came to the table was flavorful and so damn delicious. However, the food here was just that. I personally ordered the Wagyu Sliders and added the Parmesan truffle potato bites...because why not. The sliders were not over cooked the aioli was perfect and those potatoes...hot damn...bless the chef because they were perfectly cooked. We also order some French toast because we wanted some sweet with our savory, don't judge me...judge yo mama, lol. Let me tell you, those French toast were cooked to perfection, it had the right amount of crisp and sweetness...a little syrup went a long way. These things melted in my mouth. Other items pictured order by my girlfriends are the Denver-ish Scramble & Steak and Eggs. I didn't eat any but from what I gather both items were to their liking. Party of six about the noon hour. No reservations but I arrived first about 10 minutes before noon. The hostess took told me they had to clean the table and if half my party arrived when table cleaned she would seat us. Party arrived and as we waited we were worried it would be hot But must just be the entry way because it got cooler as we approached our table. Server was excellent and helped us with recommendations I ordered a #RaspberryMartini which had a very long wait, my friends ordered a flight of Mimosas and that was served promptly. The server said the bar was backed up and her manager would take it off the bill but it would be coming...and it came and I was glad for that resolution I did receive #EggsInPurgatory timely. The server did warn me it was spicy and it was but nothing I can't handle. The sourdough bowl was a bit tough, the shakshuka sauce was thick but had plenty of mushrooms The egg was not runny at all as I would have prefer. I had a side of their #ParmesanTrufflePotatoes and #Bacon and both were good. I eventually got my martini soon after my food arrived and it was refreshing and probably best I got it with my meal as I was on an empty stomach. I definitely would come back to explore more drink and food items. The service all around was excellent and they made up for the delay of my drink. Parking seemed ample as I had no trouble finding a spot right in front of it and my friends had no complaints about finding parking. read more

Stopped by to have some brunch with my family I did about a 40 min wait for my table. Not only that but when my table was ready the server that attended me for got about us. Just brought us half of our drinks. Waited about another 25-30min for some one to take my order. I was all ready irritated. My kids were super fussy mind that we got there like at 10ish didn't get our food till around 12ish me and my husband were about to leave. And just order drive through. A couple mins later my kids food arrived!! Thank god they were super fussy. 10 min later we got our food it was all right !! But just not all that like the comments say!!! To over hype. Out waiter felt bad and gave us a 20% percent off that's really why they a 3 star if not ut would of been a 2 starts. read more

Came here to celebrate my birthday with my mom and will definitely be coming back! Our server was Kaylah and she was so sweet and patient with us. We had a situation to deal with so my mom had to leave for a bit and I was eating alone for a while. She gave me my space and was concerned if I was okay since I was eating alone on my birthday (which I totally was since the situation happens every so often that I'm quite used to it). When my mom had arrived to eat we were absolutely not rushed and was surprised with a free birthday sundae! (Which was way more than enough for the 2 of us since it was originally supposed to be a party of 3) So happy with how my experience turned out especially on my birthday! Can't wait to come back Food: *Eggs in purgatory was spicy (which was my fault for not looking at the menu closely) but still very delicious! *Elvis french toast had the best notes of banana in it (mom's order) *French omelette with cheese inside was super flavorful (meant for my brother but he couldn't make it so we took it to-go) and the tater tots (not sure what to call them) were such a unique texture almost like a mini hashbrown bite! We couldn't stop eating them and talking about how cutely shaped they were *Portions were big enough for one person but if you're not too hungry, I suggest getting multiple orders and sharing with your friends to try out everything on their unique menu!
