My mom and I came here this past Sunday 5/4/2025 and were lucky enough to have Tee as our server. My mom ordered an espresso martini which she enjoyed. I had two vanilla caramel cappuccinos because they were sooo good but of course pretty small. We ordered the shrimp and grits and the pancake combo and we shared them. The shrimp and grits were absolutely delicious!! Our pancakes came out a little dark and without us even saying anything, Tee noticed and offered to replace them and the new ones came out cooked perfectly. Location is easy to find parking and there is a structure on site if the parking out front gets a little packed. We went for a Sunday brunch and were seated right away. Service was okay, our server gave us the check even when some of our party had mimosas left to drink and never came back to check up on us even when we stayed close to an hour later. Since we got there I noticed groups leaving and by the time we left (we spent a good 2 and a half hours at the restaurant) tables still had plates of leftover food and full cups of dirty drinks on the table...which I wouldn't mind if they weren't right next to us and in an open space where flies were landing on everything. Mimosa flights were ordered by a couple of our party members and you could see the syrup and flavor coagulating at the bottom of the glass. Would we be back? Maybe? This is a really cute place to brunch. The overall look of the place is super cute, open floor space and big enough to seat lots of people. We came after church one day and were seated right away. Ok, so maybe almost 4 stars. Only came once. The atmosphere/decor/vibe is great but the Sunday I came in it was kinda chaotic with the wait staff and took about 25 minutes to order our food. Personally I think the food was over priced, plus there is a 5% surcharge. I got the breakfast burrito, Food tasted good but hard to justify an $18+ breakfast egg, bean and potato burrito that comes with a tablespoon each of guacamole, salsa and sour cream. Or $17+avocado toast, etc. Maybe the non brunch menu is a better option, not sure. World k return probably not on my own but maybe if a friend wanted to go for a birthday or something. I thought this spot was a bit odd as far as location. It feels like it's on the back side of a building and the location of the trolley running by gives it a weird feel to me. The parking lot is decent but I can see parking getting limited during weekends and peak hours. Our server Tee was super polite and friendly. Had no issues at all with her. My experience was probably a solid 3.75 so I'll round up to 4. 3 feels too harsh. Cute spot. Decor is adorable and trendy. Recently renovated and clean. Parking is TERRIBLE at this location so just be prepared to walk a bit from underground parking at the apartments / trolley station or further down in the strip mall. Parking in front is mostly 20min max, and non timed spaces are sparse and usually taken by people at the dentist and salon in the structure. Service was great for us. It was busy but not overly so, and our server was attentive and pleasant. What holds me back most is how EXPENSIVE this place is. It's breakfast, bro. My "lighter side" green eggs (legit, egg whites and green veggies) was $27!!!! Like... wuuuuuttt? The rest of the group liked their food, and admittedly mine was good and the portions were large. BUT $27 FOR EGG WHITES AND VEGGIES??? Other items ordered: -red eggs -chilaquiles -cinnamon walnut streusel pancakes -iced chai lattes -regular black coffee I ordered salmon toast to go for my man at home with the kids, and that was $20. He said the bread was awkwardly spongy. There was also no regular cream cheese available? Odd that you'd have jalapeño cream cheese but not plain. Idk man... the bill is steep. I dont even know if I ate it the right way but it was very pretty (not something I care about since my eyes have no mouth but a welcome sight) and tasted pretty good. I ordered the good Ol' benny with a coffee and my husband ordered a classic French omelet with orange juice. When we were sat at the booth, we noticed on the ledge there was a little bit of paper trash. When the waitress came by she did ask if my husband could get up so she could grab the trash but my husband preferred just to grab it for her. When my coffee arrived, I didn't notice there was no spoon to mix in my creamer. I waited for the waitress to come by but our food ended up arriving before I saw the waitress. I ended up just asking the server who brought the food to grab me a spoon. The good ol' benny was an okay dish. My only complaint is that the English muffin was so soggy. My husband was not happy about his classic French omelet at all. He said they shouldn't call it a classic French omelet if it not a classic French omelet. His omelet was far to browned on the bottom to be considered a French omelet as a classic French omelet is not supposed to be browned at all and it shouldn't have cheese in it. He was aware that toasted did add the boursen cheese to their French omelet, as it was listed that way on the menu. I noticed as dishes came and went around the room that this restaurant adds a roasted tomato to almost every single plate they serve here and almost every time I saw them being taken away still with the tomato on the plate. I found this extremely wasteful, I asked for them not to put the roasted tomato on my plate. After we received the check, I noticed that they charge $7.50 for a large cup of orange juice. I find this price outrageous. For the same price I could buy a huge gallon of orange juice at the store. I am not sure if we would come back to toasted again, it may just not be for us. read more

I'm 100% convinced the overall 4 star rating of this place was paid for or all of the reviews are fake or untrustworthy. Toasted La Mesa is a chaotic mess. During my experience here I noticed that every table is seated uncomfortably. Parties of 6 being seated at booths for 4 people? All the tables were crammed. This place is definitely not accommodating for a big group. Service is poor. I completely understand places are short staffed. Using that as an excuse when servers are just standing around chatting and on their phones, it's hard to be understanding. The staff is lacking training as well. Any questions about the menu? Good luck getting an answer. If you do come here, don't waste your money by ordering any fancy sounding drink on the menu. The cappuccino I ordered was served cold and was just coffee with creamer. The fried chicken eggs Benedict I ordered sounded great, but was a sloppy mess. They had to remake this dish 3 times until they got a poached egg right. The table next to us also sent back their food because the eggs were overcooked. The kitchen staff is also lacking a lot of experience and due to this, food is being wasted. The only redeeming quality toasted had were the Parmesan truffle potatoes. That was the most enjoyable part of this experience. Toasted could be really good with the correct training and staffing. I'm convinced there was a lot of "let's just wing it and see how it goes" before opening this place. Decor and ambiance are very chic and awesome for a breakfast place in La Mesa, but this doesn't make up for the terrible experience. The short rib was very delicious & is a pretty hearty plate, although I still think the price is higher than what I would expect for it. The bread itself was thick & sometimes difficult to cut with the knife they give you. Letting the egg soak into the bread helps a lot, but the edges are still tricky. I wanted a lavender drink, but wasn't in the mood for alcohol, so I requested a non-alcoholic lavender lemonade. I love the flavor, although slightly sweeter than I'd want. The service wasn't the greatest either. Our server was bland, she came and refilled my husband's mimosa's at first and towards the middle of our meal just stopped. Not once did she refill my water. The ambiance at Toasted is everything you want in a brunch restaurant: it's clean and bright and the decor is fantastic. The service is warm, friendly and quick. We sat at the bar and Harrison took care to make sure we had everything we needed. He checked in often for refills on drinks and to clear and clean our space. He makes a delicious latte and a great bunch cocktail too. We had a vanilla latte, an epic Monte Cristo that cannot be missed if you are into a sweet and savory combination of goodness, avocado toast that really hit the spot, and a bacon eggs Benedict that had us licking the plate. Hollandaise sauce isn't the easiest thing to get right and this one was wonderful. There are several Benedicts to choose from and I'll be back soon to try another.
