Tried this hidden treasure out Saturday afternoon and I must say it was the best decision made that day. I wanted some brunch and began my search, came across Toasters...the pics were very inviting and the location wasn't too far. Walking up to this place I became a bit unsure about my decision, as there wasn't many cars outside. Granted I did arrive about 30 mins before closing...which seem to be my theme for that weekend...anywho, I turn the corner and there comes a couple walking out looking very much satisfied and happy...then another guy with to-go boxes and another guy leaving food in hand. So now I'm excited!!! My doubt quickly turned into blissfulness that got shut down and redirected to sadness, as a man standing inside started turning the open sign around to closed. I couldn't believe after racing all the way over there, I wasn't going to be able to experience what those customers who just left did. Since I'm not a quitter I approached the door and shyly uttered "are y'all closed?" the tall intimidating guy on the other side of the door (who looked to be a bodyguard in a previous life) politely opened the door and let me and boyfriend in. The place had a cool artsy, hipster vibe and was very welcoming. The lady who took our order was tremendously nice, wish I remembered her name but anywho, she suggested the Banana Foster French Toast and the Chicken & Waffles to be amongst the popular choices. I ordered the Banana Foster French Toast and my boyfriend got the Chicken & Waffles. All I have to say is hmm...hmm...GREAT!!!! The Banana Foster has a taste out of this world...the bananas are sautéed to perfection drenched in this sweet glaze smothered in pecans and lay on top two large slices of delicious French toast. The dish is prepared so well, that I believe it is made with love each time. You don't even need to bother with adding any syrup to the toast, the toppings alone do this dish justice. I tried my bf's food of course and it was good. The chicken not really seasoned to my taste but still was moist and fried well. Waffles were ummm...waffles lol cooked very well and taste great & I loved that they came with strawberries. DEFINITELY, definitely going back. This is such a cute, local, little spot to check out when you're in downtown. Brought my dad here for a quick lunch the other day and we both loved it. He ordered the barbecue chicken sandwich with a side of fries, and I got the turkey burger (I love me some turkey burgers!) with a small fries. My dad said his sandwich was very tasty, and my burger was flavorful and juicy! My only complaint is for the staff: they weren't very friendly at all. Visiting from out of town, and was excited to try Toasters after reading the reviews. The line was out the door, which is always a good sign, right? In this case, that is an incorrect assumption. The employees were very friendly (which is why they're getting two stars and not just one), but things went downhill fast when they said they didn't have any coffee and it would take 10 minutes to brew more. I'm not a savage, I can wait 10 minutes. However, when the bacon has a rancid flavor, they completely forget to make half my order, and then don't have anything but powdered creamer when the (horrible) coffee is finally ready, I have to draw the line. Good ole American breakfast. The door was opened by one of the employees as I approached the restaurant and immediately met by three other very friendly employees. The staff made several recommendations about the banana pancakes, country breakfast, and some items on the lunch menu - which was available at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning. They were running a deal on Yelp that if you checked in you would get a free dessert, so my lunch date and I split a piece of German Chocolate Cake. So yummy! Dropped in on a holiday Monday for lunch. There was no line and plenty of tables for seating. Even a couple 2-tops outside for those who want to enjoy the sun. The staff was friendly and recommended the Chicken n Waffles and Banana Foster French toast to us. We both decided on the Chicken n Waffles, since it's what we went for. New ownership is very shady, came back after my order wad screwed up to a complementary average meal. I finished my meal, me personally I love Blue Berry Muffins. I informed the owner that I would like a muffin and that would pay for it after I returned from the men' room. So when I took alook at the muffin it had a white fungus on the side and top of the muffin. It's tucked away in the developing area of Houston near downtown, but I suspect that once more people realize this place exists, the lines will be out the door. This is a mom and pop kind of place which i love. The food is good. The ambiance is fine for a mom and pop kind of place. We tried the shrimp and grits and the banana French toast. It's got condensed sweeten milk on top and lot so butter. Don't eat anything else for the day because your entire day's calories is in that meal. The It's good and do take some of it home to enjoy as dessert later. The coffee is really important to me. I suggest that the restaurant keep some Splenda and real cream available for the coffee. The service was good and as was the food. A couple of small but gentle complaints, if you please: First, I had the Migas. The taste was really amazing but Migas are supposed to have bits of fried tortillas mixed in. This had none. I would have called the dish Eggs a la Mexicana. The beans were good and plentiful, and my corn tortillas were hot. Second: I personally don't like going to a sit down restaurant and getting a Styrofoam cup for my coffee. When we went the ac was broken...it wasn't completely miserable though. You order at the counter, so I had the peanut butter pancakes, eggs and bacon. He had the same but with sausage, cheesy grits, biscuits and gravy while his daughter had pancakes, eggs, and bacon too. I hadn't had a breakfast like that in a few months, so it was really good to me. The pancakes were fluffy and pretty big. My boyfriend liked his a lot. The gravy was yum and so were the biscuits and the extra buttery grits. His daughter ate most of hers as well. The service is mediocre.
