We had just arrived in the area and we were tired from traveling. Didn't want to go out to any type of formal dining and didn't want your normal fast food. McAllister's fit the bill. We arrived around 5:00 in the evening and they had a few patrons but not extremely busy. The restaurant looked pretty clean and wasn't run down. The person running the register wasn't what I would call friendly, but neither could I call her rude. She was just a no nonsense person, and that's okay. She took our orders and handed us our cups for our drinks. Their lemonade is so good. We found a table and only had to wait about 10 minutes on our food. I ordered the Choose 2 Combo. I chose 1/2 Smoky Pepper Jack Turkey sandwich and 1/2 the chipotle chicken & bacon spud. Both were delicious. My brother tried the grilled chicken club minus the cheese. He enjoyed his as well. My mom got the pecanberry salad. I almost ordered that myself since I love salads with fruit. It looked amazing and she said it was tasty as well. Overall, it was a great experience and we will definitely return when in the area.

After getting a menu, I ordered the fish and chips, which is usually my go-to when trying a pub for the first time. The plate looked great when it arrived: four large pieces of fried cod (enough for two people, really), fries, a big pickle spear, two cups of tartar sauce, and coleslaw. The coleslaw deserves special mention. It was excellent--honestly one of the best I've had anywhere. Fresh, balanced, and really flavorful. The fish arrived hot and the first bite was very good: flaky cod with a crisp exterior. As I worked further into it, though, I realized the batter was thicker than I personally prefer. Instead of a light, crispy coating, it was heavier and softer underneath the crust, and as the fish cooled that became more noticeable. The fries were decent but seemed like they had been sitting under heat for a bit. Not bad, just not as hot and crisp as they could have been. The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable, and it seems like a good place to meet friends or catch a game. Service at the bar was polite but fairly minimal, and my total was just over $27 for the beer and fish and chips, which felt a little high for the overall depth of the meal. Overall, it was a mixed experience: good vibe, great coleslaw, decent fish, but not quite a standout meal for me. I'll likely give Dagwood's another try and explore other items on the menu. And when I do, I'll definitely order that coleslaw again.

That said, I saw there was a new place called Lulu's right around the corner. I checked out their menu, and it looked like a fun place to eat. The pictures of the food looked pretty good, so off we went. Upon arriving, the first thing that struck me was the big, open atmosphere of the establishment. It wasn't very cozy, but the hostess did greet us in a friendly manner and took us to our seats--which ended up being one of the worst aspects of this restaurant. I have never been more uncomfortable sitting in a restaurant in my life. I know that's a weird gripe, but these were some of the most uncomfortable chairs I've ever sat in. They hurt so bad. My kids were seated on the benches across from us, and they could barely even reach the table. My wife switched places with my son, and the benches were covered in what looked like footprints and dirt from people standing on them. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We started off with drinks. We all got soft drinks, and every single one of them was flat. We ordered the fried green tomatoes, and they were OK. The dipping sauce was great. My wife and son ordered the tacos, which they said were bland, tasteless, and pretty underwhelming. My daughter ordered a kids' cheeseburger, took one bite, and said it was disgusting. Unfortunately for me, I ordered one of the most expensive things on the menu: a seafood entrée where you get to pick two items. I picked the fish and oysters, both fried. Some of the oysters tasted like they were kind of rotten--very fishy. The fish itself was OK, but the breading they used was absolutely atrocious. It tasted like the oil hadn't been changed in weeks. The fry on the fish was dark and had an almost burnt, overly salty taste to it. Absolutely terrible. As we were about to leave, a live band started playing, and they sounded pretty nice. I wish they had been playing while we were still eating, but by that point we were so ready to get out of there. We were incredibly disappointed. The real shocker came when I got the check. For our family of four, it was almost $110 before the tip. This food was in no way worth that kind of price. I honestly would've rather gone to a fast-food restaurant. This place gets two stars simply because the staff we encountered were friendly and because of the live music. Otherwise, this is one of the most boring, aesthetically unappealing restaurants I've ever been in, with some of the worst overpriced food I've ever had. Never again. We definitely won't be back.
