How have I never reviewed Tocabe?? I absolutely LOVE Tocabe. In fact, if there was one current spot I could eat at for free, or was forced to eat, every day for an entire year, it would be this gem on 44th & Tennyson. After 50+ visits over the past 2 years, where I have only had one experience that wasn't a 5 meal, I'm pretty much stuck on the beef bowl with wild Canadian rice (Which is my favorite rice ever, and I'm not aware of anyone else having) and then just loaded up with everything I can talk them into stuffing in. The restaurant itself is nicely attired and clean, and not too loud even though it's almost always vibing. And in this day and age, the prices can't much be beat. The food itself is always fresh, with awesome fry bread and chips, and one of my favorite cheese sauces ever, I'm absolutely hooked and can truly say as I move into my new place in Broomfield today, that one of the only things I will miss about my 3+ years on 38th Ave, is Tocabe. We've been to two different locations and they're pretty different in style and vibe. But the food has been so delicious and FILLING both times. I tend to get wild rice and quinoa. I've had both the chicken and beef. And no matter what, they're so tasty. If you're not sure what to order, just ask. The servers are so friendly and really seem interested in making sure you're satisfied. The dining area is clean and set up nicely. Noise level was low enough, never too loud. read more

Walked into a busy lunch service with many of the tables both indoors and outdoors occupied. We had at least 10 customers in front of us but the line did move somewhat quickly. Once we completed our order there was another 10 customers behind us. Great sign! This place must be good. I had to go with something I have never tried before the "Indian Taco" fry bread topped with black beans, lettuce, cheese, hominy chutney, corn, sour cream, and a Chipotle cream sauce. I chose bison for my protein which is braised for 13 hours with spices and herbs do the meat just shreds apart. This is something I recommend to attack with a knife and fork because it's just to large to hold with two hands while not making a mess. There was very little wait and the front of staff workers were very helpful with whatever stupid question I had floating around in my head. I ordered a posu bowl with red quinoa and wheatberry with ground bison with osage hominy, sweet corn, and sour cream and ancho chipotle. I had big expectations coming in for the bison and it kind of only tasted like ground beef (which is still good). I really enjoyed my bowl and the amount of customization I could do. The toppings/sauces are the things that really pulled me in and created some flavor pops during my meal. As a novice to this fare, this was a very gentle intro. Not intimidating at all. Everything is clearly listed and the workers were very kind. It's a walk up, order in stages style of eatery that many places have adopted. You're able to see all the options and if you're unsure, they offer a sample so you can taste and be sure. The fry bread was delicious and a kind gentleman behind me in line suggested grabbing some honey that they package separately on the side to accompany it, sort of a sweet treat afterwards. We've been here a few times and it's always amazing. Last time we came, we had a runners stroller and had no problems getting it in and out. There is a step on to the patio from the inside but wasn't hard to get over. We sat outside and the weather was great. When we left, we went out the side gate making it easier with the stroller. Food and service always top notch! Pretty much all the menu is from Native owned sources. Counter help is always willing to walk you through your choices, multiple meats, beans, and salsas to work with and they are happy to help guide people. Vegan choices as well. They have a website where they stock most of what they serve in the stores you can order from and have it shipped to you when you get addicted to the food and a portion of the profits get shipped to the reservations to help feed the hungry there. I have had Tocabe bookmarked for ages, and finally made it in today! A bit too overwhelmed with the options to build my own, I went with one of the recommendations, Triple D (from Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives). I had never heard of fry bread before, and after one bite, I am truly shocked that fry bread is not a more widespread obsession. WOW. Fluffy cloud-like bread with the most perfect lightly-crisp outside. The Triple D was loaded with black beans, grilled chicken, osage hominy salsa, lettuce, cheese, green chiles, and ancho chili sauce (I subbed this sauce for the sour cream). The osage hominy salsa was my favorite part, but every ingredient genuinely rocked. The flavor combo was wild. When the cashier handed me my Indian taco to-go, I initially thought there was no way I could finish it -- SO much food....But it was too good to stop eating until every last shred of cheese was gone. Awesome value for the price! I stopped by right at 11 when they were set to open, and they did not end up opening until closer to 11:20 -- no big deal, but just a heads up for if you are in a rush. What we found was a clean, well-run restaurant that had exceptional American Indian food. What a great change from the normal lunches. I'm fairly sure that some of the toppings have been adapted to suit today's diet like the mixed greens, yet it was all good. We tried the Indian Fry Bread, and they top it anyway you want. I thought the shredded Buffalo was delicious, especially topped with beans, corn, green chilis, and lettuce. They have recommendations for what to try or you can choose from the line of ingredients. It was a fast food restaurant so you were expected to bus your own table, but despite that, it had a nice ambiance. It was quiet and had a nice American Indian decor to it. The server assisted me with ordering. He suggested The Original on an Indian fry bread taco and I am so glad I took his suggestion. The spice added to the beef was fantastic! I ordered it as is, didn't change anything. I also ordered an order of wojapi sauce and fry bread nuggets to go. The server brought the fresh fry bread to my table and they smelled so good and were so warm that I had to taste one immediately before packaging up to bring home. I've never tried Native American cuisine before, so I definitely made sure to stop by Tocabe while on my way to visit nearby state parks. To be honest, I didn't know what to expect (other than bison on the menu LOL), but I was seriously blown away by how incredibly well prepared their food was, especially for being a casual comfort food joint. As someone who had some poorly prepared bison during this trip, I loved how both their ground bison and bison ribs were so fresh and tender, without any hint of gaminess. The Indian taco was incredible, with a soft pillowy fry bread base that paired nicely with the bison, veggies, and generously drizzled sauce. I also loved their green chili stew, which was spicy yet sweet and comforting from the corn and bison, respectively. Their drink selection was also unique, featuring some of the best sodas that I've ever tried (and unfortunately can't find in California). The busy lines during peak lunch hours is a testament to the quality of their food, and I would highly recommend checking them out if you're in Denver! read more
