In need of a consult, my doctor referred me to Dr. Perkins. Not too excited about driving into the city, it turned out to be an easy commute. There is parking nearby and the clinic subsidized a portion of the fee. And being able to complete paperwork online made for a short wait before the exam. Dr. Perkins entered the room with a smile and introduced himself. Very pleasant. And getting down to business without feeling rushed. Throughout the exam he explained everything and sat patiently as I asked questions. The procedure took no time at all. And I left the office feeling satisfied with the visit. Just a response to Dr. Perkins: I originally came to you for acne scarring NOT for a rash. You noticed what I thought was psoriasis on my foot and turned the conversation in that direction after dismissing my acne scarring. I initially inquired about TCA, you said I didn't have enough scarring to warrant it (something several other dermatologists have suggested as treatment) and said that perhaps I wouldn't care about my scars in 6 months. I specifically chose your office because you offer TCA. I do appreciate that you took the time to respond and again, recognize that you diagnosed my hypertrophic lichen planus with a biopsy. Unfortunately, what I was hoping for was treatment for acne scarring. The misdiagnosis of psoriasis was not particularly troubling to me, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to have clarity about the issue. read more

I've been to a lot of doctors both in the U.S. (NYC, Philadelphia) and abroad in Europe where I used to live. Dr. Perkins is one of the worst doctors I've ever seen. He was super dismissive, curt, arrogant, and barely spent 10-15 minutes with me before rushing off. He actually had the gall to interrupt my questions and say he had other patients to see and clearly had no interest in helping me. This isn't just a case of bad bedside manners, he also didn't have any interest in my medical backstory (why I came in, I had an allergic reaction on my skin, but then other related issues that I think are linked to other factors and my explanation) and just immediately began prescribing things to me. His office then charged me $100 off the bat, even though they accept my insurance, and began explaining to me my co-pay, which is none of their business. When I spoke to my insurance company they told me this isn't really the norm and I had a right not to pay and to ask them to submit my claim though insurance, so I could pay then. Of course Dr. Perkins office front desk told me I couldn't leave without paying. Overall really bad experience, please save your money and time and find someone else. read more

My experience with Dr. Perkins has been very positive. I've read some reviews which reference rushed visits. I've never experienced that personally. I switched to Dr Perkins from a dermatologist in another city. I was treating my psoriasis using topical drugs which seemed messy and ineffective. He was very open to suggesting new things and gauging my risk tolerance. Ultimately he helped me start a new treatment as a part of a program with the drug manufacturer (new drug not covered by insurance; this was a lot more work for them than just prescribing something else). My last visit to this dermatologist was 5 years after my initial visit, which actually went very well. I didn't feel I was treated as well as before and was just less satisfied with the experience. I had a mole removed and laser surgery on a burst blood vessel, which after 2 visits was taken care of. The worst part of the experience was the billing. I was told my services were not covered due to the "cosmetic" nature so I paid in full at the time of service, or so I thought....next thing I know I'm receiving bills for insurance co-pays. Why am I being billed through insurance when I paid up front? I made several calls to this clinic at a huge inconvenience to me, as we live overseas and the time zones are vastly different. Each time I was told someone would "get back to me" yet I never heard a word, just kept receiving overdue notices in the mail. I asked that they email me due to the time difference communication issue. No one ever got back to me on any of the multiple occasions I called. Terrible customer service. My recommendation is thus: 1. Ensure this dermatologist is "in network" before booking a visit. 2. Get a receipt showing a ZERO balance due if you're paying out of pocket. 3. Don't expect any help from billing customer service if something goes wrong. read more

I have relied upon Dr. Perkins for over 15 years. He is much more knowledgeable than average, in my experience, regarding skin cancer treatments; when I was out of state for a few years, three otherwise fine dermatologists didn't know about recent developments but Dr. Perkins did. The doctors and staff have always been professional and courteous with me, and I have not felt rushed, although this office is indeed quite busy. I have been seeing Dr. Perkins for several years now and speaking from my own experience, can attest to his expertise and sound medical judgement. Having said that... I can't really give super high marks for their front office. They don't really like to pick up the phone, case in point, setting the phone to the "outside of business hours" during actual business hours; for example I called today at 4:09 pm to make an appointment and got that message, even though the message quoted the business hours as closing at 4:15 pm. Similarly this has happened on their phone line's lengthy lunch break; not following the hours claimed. They just can't wait to forward that phone. This is coming off the heels of leaving a message requesting an appointment several days ago and have received no callback; so it's kind of a challenge to actually get an appointment. In summary, the front desk performs basic functions, but not super-well, not super-friendly, and they're basically just not really customer service oriented. I mean, if they really don't want to deal with patients that's fine with me, but at least offer me a HIPAA compliant customer portal and let me submit my appointment requests there. I've also noticed that the long term appointment schedule for those who need regular checkups seems to fall off track a lot of times, and with certain skin disorders, this can potentially become a big deal. Maintaining a regular appointment schedule for chronic skin diseases and skin review is essential to dermatological and potentially overall health. A responsible doctor's office needs to take that care management plan seriously as does the patient. I'm willing to do my part, I need the office to meet me half way and do theirs. As for Dr. Perkins, as previously mentioned he is more than competent and really knows his subject matter. The comments about his bedside manner are oft mentioned and hopefully with a sufficient frequency that they have become a point of reflection. There was another doctor in the practice, not Stolar, a younger doctor, who was really good with bedside manner and I might switch over to him, but I do seem to have more confidence in Dr. Perkins' lengthy experience, so I am willing to tolerate his occasional brusqueness (to a point). Overall, rating the practice, not perfect but I will continue to see them for my skin care needs (if I can get an appointment). read more

Dr. Perkins is ABSOLUTELY the best!! I had this issue around my mouth, NO one and I mean not one of the 3 Drs could tell me what was going on. I was told it was from wearing a mask, which is not the issue at all. I work at home and go out once or twice a week. The appointment process was also amazing, I emailed late Tuesday evening, I was called Wednesday morning at 9am asked a few questions and sent paperwork for an appt Thursday morning. Love the efficiency of the staff and they were very customer focused. At the appointment Dr. Perkins was thorough, very detailed in the questions he asked and he listened!!!! He told me what I needed to stop doing immediately and start doing and suggested additional testing. Today I am writing this review based on my personal experience. About six months ago I discovered a rash under my armpit. It itched terribly. Due to COVID I decided not to see a doctor but to treat the unknown condition myself. Weeks and months passed, my rash worsened. With no relief insight, I decided to schedule an appointment with my dermatologist Dr. Todd Perkins, Washington DC. When I arrived at the office I was greeted with a friendly smile and welcoming by Ms. Silver. I experienced no wait time before I was called and directed to the examination room. The examination room had a air purifier in the room. After my examination Dr. Perkins immediately diagnosed the problem. Afterwards the Dr. wrote me 2 prescriptions. He assured me that as soon as I start using the medicine I would receive immediate relief. Before seeing the Dr. I experienced 6 months of discomfort and after using the medicine that was prescribed by Dr. Perkins I received immediate relief. When I saw Dr. Perkins 2 weeks later for my follow up my rash was completely gone. Thank you Dr. Perkins, you really know your stuff. I'll definitely recommend you to everyone. read more

One of those Type A doctors who thinks he knows everything. I don't mind people who are Type A, (and I assume he does know a lot about his field) but it would helpful if you listened to me for a minute. Remember, I'm the patient? Also, he wrote me about $900 worth of brand prescriptions that my insurance wouldn't cover. Thanks a lot. Ultimately he ended up being helpful on this end (hence, 2 stars over 1), however, he was so argumentative and unpleasant to deal with I told him upfront that I would no longer be a patient of his. I have been to many doctors over my life and I never met one that is this condescending and this unwilling to listen to my concerns. read more

Whatever confusion existed with his staff (disrobe vs. stay dressed) has been fixed. I was told the doctor wanted to introduce himself before I took my clothes off, which is better than some dates I've had. Dr. Perkins has a brisk demeanor, which might come across as a little abrupt for those born south of the Mason-Dixon line. However, I'm a Yankee -- I view it as a sign of confidence and intelligence, which I'd much rather have in a doctor than the warm-fuzzies. I got plenty of people to hold my hand; his job is to be professional. I gave him a checklist of several things I wanted him to look at...and then I kept adding stuff. I put him through his paces and he responded knowledgeably and without a hint of condescension (my pet peeve). I might even email him just to keep him on his toes. I need to address the other negative comments: as a patient, you need to be proactive about your health care. Ask the doctor to slow down and explain something if you feel overwhelmed or rushed. Become a PITA if the office staff does not communicate with your insurance (get the doctor involved...after all, it's his staff). And don't discount the fact that your insurance company employs an awful lot of idiots who've been taught 1000 ways to f&*% up a claim. read more

Gone to him for years, efficient, good communicator, down-to-earth. I've had three skin cancers, basal and squamous, and many, many pre-cancers and other suspicious lesions. He handled them well. Dr Perkins is caring, kind & very professional. I was in the health industry for yrs & later started my own bridal shop. Being both in health industry & a business owner, I think this practice does well by their clients. 1) Some of the negative remarks on yelp sound entitled. 15 min increments are standard Dr appts. most physicians are able to gather all the info from pre-filled forms & upon seeing you. Patients want to talk, & be heard of the nonsense research they have done on webmd. Its a waste of time for the dr & you. If you have a job to get back to, let him be the resource & trust that its his field of expertise. Clients do "research" & think they know best. When a client walks in my shop, I know immediately types of makeup (airbrush/hd) that will not work for their skin. If a bride spends in thousands for entire bridal party's hair makeup, they will not recall if it was their insistence to not listen to my advice, and hold biz accountable. Its a tough position. 2) Dr P. is not dismissive, he is DECISIVE. One look at me & he knew which treatment is best 3) I find the doctor to be a problem solver. If there is an issue, he solves it instead of wasting time by "talking about how it made me feel". Find this simple algorithm, time = money 4) Micro needling has improved 1 side of my face after 3 sessions, waiting for last two 5) Now the con: I have only 1 con & only reason I gave this review 1 less star, despite the rave review. My bf paid for the treatments as a bday gift. Dr. P gave me a quote of $450/ session. I am very meticulous. I wrote it down in my cell notes section during initial consult & texted my bf a total of $2250. But after the 1st session, I was told it was $500/session. If it was not someone else's money/CC, I wouldn't be so irritated. I thought I made a mistake but I went back & double checked my notes/texts. I also once found the dr unable to remember what to charge me, so I think it might have slipped his mind, he does have tons going on. I guess it was only a big deal since it was someone else's card & money; and I felt really awkward to call back for a bigger limit....eeek read more
