A great addition to the restaurant scene located in downtown Waukesha. Tapas/small plates style usually isn't my go to, but Tofte's does a great job of making this style of dining go smoothly. The service is top notch and each time I've eaten here the servers are knowledgeable, kind, and quick. The story of the restaurant creates an inviting and intimate feel and they've done a great job creating a clean and safe environment during COVID. While the menu does change seasonally, some my favorite dishes are their fried chicken, kale and collard dip, and the braised short ribs. In the land of chain restaurants Tofte's Table is a welcome addition to the suburbs. The space is what I call rustic industrial chic. There are several single tables that are nicely spaced out and one larger communal table in the center. We opted to sit at the bar and we're happy we did. Everyone from the moment we walked in to the bartenders were super friendly. The restaurant filled up quickly and for being a restaurant only open for a couple of days did a great job of keeping up. The menu is laid out well and the plates are easily shareable or are a decent size for a single diner as a main course. We decided to share several different plates. The hits of the meal were: Fried Chicken, Heirloom Tomatoes and Burrata, Sweet Potato Risotto with grilled Portabella shaved Parmesan and balsamic glaze and then the grilled vegetables. All were delicious and wouldn't change a thing about these dishes. The dishes that were just ok were the Wisconsin Kielbasa and the Grilled Octopus. The Kielbasa was super salty to me, I would have liked the hash to be crispier and maybe just grainy mustard and not the aioli part. The grilled octopus was grilled too much; so it was pretty charred and lost that sweet flavor that properly grilled octopus has. I would have liked more acid in the lemon mustard vinaigrette, it was way too sweet for me. The crusty bread that was served with the octopus was a bit stale and really didn't add to the dish.These dishes were not bad, but with some minor tweaks could be as good as the other dishes we had. We didn't have any room for dessert, but plan on coming back and will save room next time. I didn't have a drink this time but they do have a nice selection of wines and beers and some tasty looking mixed cocktails. I am so happy we have Tofte's in our area! read more

Everything was so delicious! The braised short rib with risotto, carrots and radish was so good! The scallops with truffle risotto was delicious! The shrimp dish blew my mind! We've been two times, now, and both have been fantastic experiences. Most recently we went with friends and all shared the following in several courses: duck confit tostadas, grilled veggies, mushroom risotto, braised pork belly, octopus, lobster and shrimp roll, fried chicken and the bread pudding for dessert. A couple coworkers and I made our way here on a Wednesday evening, when we arrived we were asked if we had reservations (which we did not but happened to show up at the perfect timing apparently and a group of 3 had just cancelled before us so we were able to be sat!) That said, maybe make a reservation? Outside of that, the host was so friendly and so was our server Agatha!! Dishes are served in a sort of tapas style but can easily be just for yourself. I am vegan and Agatha was so helpful letting me know all of my options. You'll quickly realize they have plenty of vegetarian options, I do wish they had like one or two vegan only options because you can always add things to make it vegetarian easier than you can modify vegetarian to be vegan. (Aka the reason I took one star off, it is 2023 after all...) I love a good drink and they have plenty!! Not to mention, the atmosphere is really nice. It is dark and sort of candle lit, but I enjoyed it. No too loud either, love that! While sitting down we kept raving about how much we loved our server Agatha lol so I'd request her honestly! Fantastic attention to detail! Quality over quantity. Well crafted small plates and attentive service. Our first visit was wonderful. Let me get the one negative out of the way... Tofte's is crazy popular! Expect a long wait! We went on a Saturday and arrived a few minutes after they opened and there was a line out the door. The wait was already an hour and a half! The wait time on Yelp was 0 minutes, so don't go by that especially if going at 5pm. They only make reservations for larger tables. We did sign in and they texted us when our table was ready. There's a wine bar close by, but that's not our thing, so we waited at a tavern nearby. We were seated at the end of a large communal table. We were fine with that, but if you're not, you should mention that when signing in. You may have to wait longer for a table though. There's other tables, 2 tops, 4 tops, and seating at the bar. Dave, our server, was great! He gave great suggestions for our first visit. Everything came out timely. Plates were cleared multiple times. Service was top notch! The food is fancy comfort food. I really like what they're doing. I've never had fried chicken like theirs! It was so tender, and all the meat came clean off the bone. The outside was nice and crispy. The drumsticks were served with a maple glaze. I highly recommend it. The beef short ribs were delicious too! Very tender and flavorful. We also had the duck confit tostadas and the kale and collard dip. The dip was tasty. The tostadas were nice and crisp, and the duck confit was delicious. Tofte's is yet another small plate experience that I'd consider a must-do for any human in search of deliciousness. The typical tapas menu involves some sort of food theme, but the only discernible trend I could identify with the dishes was that they were all delectable. Where there's good food, there's a queue. While Tofte's doesn't take reservations, hungry folks that don't dig waiting can use the Yelp wait list. I definitely recommend this. We hit the top of the list just as we arrived and we're immediately seated at one of the candle lit high tops towards the back. The bar and restaurant have a really nice ambiance with lots of dim lighting perfect for dinner, drinks, or both. While browsing the menu, my husband sipped a "New Fashioned" (their take on and Old Fashioned) which was a well-made cousin of the original. For those taking in drinks, Tofte's boasts a great selection of international wines as well as locally brewed beers. Our server said she'd be happy to help pair drinks with food, but it was clear that nobody had ever taken her up on doing so. I'm not sure she was twenty one, but either way not prepared to be a sommelier. It was recommended that we order 3-4 shareable plates. We ordered one non-sharable item and 5 shareables, which seemed more adequate for two hungry adults. We got the fried chicken(not shareable), cheese board, roasted vegetables, poutine, pork belly, and scallops. The cheese board featured four cheeses, ample crustini, dried cherries, onion jam, pepper jam, pickled veg, honeycomb, apricots, and raspberries to compliment the selections. There was even a print out that came with the board to let us know what was on it and the cheese makers responsible for the selections. This was a helpful touch because I generally forget what is what three seconds after the server tells us. The roasted veg selection would be a great dish to have alongside the cheese board. Paired with the three dipping sauces, I'm pretty sure even my five year old would have eaten almost anything on the plate! The fried chicken and poutine were more my husband's territory. The chicken was crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and the honey maple sauce put the Colonel to shame. The fries were obviously house made, the curds were slightly melty, but still held their shape, and the tender beef in gravy was tender enough for a toothless baby to eat with ease. The pork belly was also very tender and well paired with parmesean grits and greens. The only miss for me was the cornbread. It was dry, bland, and not really necessary. The dish could have been taken up a notch served without the bread and more of those creamy, dreamy grits. The scallops were also near perfect. The dish came with 5 scallops (YES, 5!!!) double seared for extra crust, yet not over-cooked and rubbery. The couscous risotto and crispy onions made this dish a texture and flavor extravaganza. Again, only one little criticism, there was a glob of cooked tomatoes amid the dish that just did nothing for it. All in all, Tofte's was a culinary delight that I hope to experience again and again. They may not have a culturally inspired menu or a new agey theme, but they know what tastes good. read more

The small plates were bigger than you'd find at most restaurants and two mains and maybe one other dish are the perfect portion for two. The fried chicken was also very flavorful even though we decided to only get one. She really liked the non-alcoholic beverages they had available. The chocolate cake was extremely rich and just one dessert would have been enough. The s'mores dessert is mostly presentation focused with a glass cover and a lot of smoke that pours off the top. Tofte's may well have become my favorite Waukesha restaurant last night! The creation of Jason and Christine Tofte, both formerly of Eddie Martini's Steakhouse is an absolute grand slam. With a menu heavy on locally sourced ingredients (including their featured cocktails and beers) and a small plate style (although not that small) meant to be shared, we had a delightful and delicious experience. We started with the New Fashioned cocktail, a twist on an Old Fashioned that featured 45th parallel bourbon. It was delicious, light and refreshing and not too boozy. For dinner, three of us shared four plates. The lobster and shrimp roll was excellent and the lemon oil drizzled on the shoe string fries brought an taste of summer to the dish. The wild mushroom risotto was creamy and delicious and a perfect lead in to the meatloaf with mashed potatoes (which did taste amazingly like steakhouse mashed potatoes). I don't dine regularly in Waukesha, as the majority of offerings stem from the same basic formats. But this place was a welcome foodie find in a haystack of traditional pub offerings. Not to say that the plenitude of pubs don't have good food. They do. But Tofte's was a welcome change from the traditional. It's very popular, so you have to be willing to wait. My friend stopped in at 6pm to get on the list. They do offer text notifications for when your table is ready, so we were able to pop into the pub next door to grab a pre dinner cocktail. Its small plate style, intended to be shared. Recommend 2 selections per person. We enjoyed the Meat and Cheese platter, which had this amazing local raw honey to pair perfectly with the Sartori cheese and other local selections. The fried chicken was juicy, and full of flavor. Pork belly with the most tasty candied bacon. And the best dish of the night, the char grilled octopus. Oh mommy. This was the best octopus I've ever had.
