Awesome experience! My wife and I visited on a Wednesday for her birthday. We were warmly greated and seated immediately (we were a little early for our reservation). It's a pretty dark, steakhouse, vibe inside with old school Frank Sinatra-esque music in the background. The service level here was perfect, I love a place where the staff plays zone and if someone notices something then they cover it seamlessly. Nick was our server and took great care of us. we tried the following: Drinks - I had a dirty gin martini and my wife had a captain and diet (her go to) and both were perfectly mixed. Appetizers - We were really looking forward to the buratta appetizer, but it had just gone off menu, so we went with the goat cheese that replaced it, which was good (but I would cut down the number of sun-dried tomatoes by 1/3). My wife ordered the onion soup and really enjoyed it. Mains - My wife had the filet and said it was the best she has had in a long while. I am a sucker for lamb and wasn't feeling like a steak, so that is what I went with. Both were amazing and we both had mashed potatoes. Mine also came with carrots with a demi-glaze. Everything was delicious. Dessert - The restaurant was kind enough to serve my wife a complimentary dessert for her birthday. It was amazing, but we were so full we could only manage a few bites. Been here several times, usually for a special occasion. Made 6:30 reservations on a Thursday night. They weren't that busy, and we sat at the bar, waiting for our other guests. Ordered a couple of specialty cocktails (Old Fashioned and Pisco Pear Sour). We got to see the bartender making them with great attention and artistry. They were both excellent. The bar area and dining room have a nice supper club feel to it. It's upscale but not stodgy. There are plenty of different areas to sit, the tables are well spaced and the noise level is decent. After getting settled in were able to take our time ordering. The server did a great job, explaining the specials and answering our questions. We started with the Mushroom Tart appetizer. While waiting, we got a basket of bread. It was amazing. Warm thorough and crust was excellent. The appetizer came out in good time, nice portion, flaky crust, and perfect temperature. A bit hit with the group. The entrees including: Blue Crab Special, the Red Deer Special, Scallops and Short Rib. Everything was the perfect temperatures, nice size portions and nicely seasoned. The Red Deer Special was so good, and cooked to a perfect medium rare. Had just enough room, so we all shared the Carrot Cake. Moist, with a generous amount of frosting, and several candies carrots. Just enough to satisfy our sweet tooth. Overall, another excellent meal. The atmosphere, service and food quality were all top notch. We will be back. read more

The Union House is the best place for a Christmas night. The lighting and ambiance is very romantic. My husband and I had a quaint little booth I. The corner by the fireplace. We felt like we had the place to ourselves. Now mind you it was completely booked and the bar was full of waiting people. This time of year you must have a reservation. Our reservation was at 5:00, we were promptly seated. Our waiter was with us quickly and drinks were ordered. We enjoyed the huckleberry and the amaretto sour. The amaretto sour was so good my husband had two. Followed up with a bowl of soup each and our entrees. Both the lobster bisque and the French onion soup were top notch. I had the short rib which was delicious served over puréed potatoes and my husband had the seafood lobster special of stuffed shells which wasn't quite as tasty as he had hoped. A long time favorite which we do not get to as often. Ir is known for being on the pricey side. We had had made a same day reservation on a Friday which I was happy to get. It was an early seating 5:00. We were guided through a fairly empty dining room to the upstairs room. There was one couple already seated in an otherwise empty room. We were seated immediately next to them..... we may as well have been sitting at their table. I not only thought this strange but actually a bit rude. But, I did not make an objection. The food at this restaurant is always good and the wild game selection along with the specials are usually the good bets. In the past the wine list was more cost friendly but still not bad. My only criticism of the menu is the rather limited appetizer selection. Our entrees were very good but overall the experience was stilted by the poor judgement of the hostess serving us. read more

Great food and a great experience overall. My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary here, and everything we ordered was delicious. The service was friendly and attentive, and they surprised us with a complimentary dessert to help us celebrate, which was a really thoughtful touch. The only minor note is the credit card surcharge, but it is clearly posted in multiple places, so there were no surprises and it did not take away from the experience. First off I have been wanting to try this restaurant for awhile.... I made a reservation a week ahead of time. When we got to the restaurant we were sat immediately. This place is very small so the bar area fills up quickly! I ordered Prosecco and my husband ordered an old fashioned. The old fashioned was strong but not muddled. To eat I had the 8 oz filet ($60) with mashed potatoes and lobster bisque. The lobster bisque was amazing. The steak, which I ordered medium, came medium rare basically. I have a fear of sending steaks back so I didn't send it back. It was still mooing though. My husband's tbone ($68) was not good. He said there was a ton of fat on it. He had the blue cheese on top and said it was too much. There were no desserts that looked good so we didn't order any. I will not eat here again. For four people our bill was $400. I can go to 5 o'clock steakhouse or carnevore and get a better meal for around the same price. read more

Have been a long time (30+ year) fan of Union House. I tend to frequent downtown restaurants, so this was a destination and has always been worth the drive. Sadly, this is not the restaurant it used to be. The food is underwhelming - lacks flavor and complexity, presentation is meh. And while quality has gone way down, the price has gone up. Scallop entree was three scallops and the lamb loin was at best 4 oz of meat. While I am not one for large portions, the price should align accordingly and did not. We went to Union House in Genesee for dinner and I had made a reservation using open table, but the Union House in Genesee didn't have the reservation. It turns out that there's more than one Union House so you have to make sure which restaurant you're reserving the table. Even though our reservation didn't exist they accommodated the 2 of us and the food was superb once again. The potato puree was the best that I have ever tasted, and both proteins were cooked to perfection. Excellent food with a wonderful waitress but it is simply way to dark in the front dining room. I have coming here twenty plus years and have never seen it so dark. When ALL your patrons look like miners with lamps (cellphones) in their hands. Turns up the lights. I asked the waitress if they could adjust the lights and she stated that they are going for a certain ambiance. It's a shame because the presentation of the food is excellent but you have too use your phone to see it. I am not suggesting to light up the place like a surgical suite but come on. Where has this Gem been all my life. The ambiance is Breathtaking, Romantic, Quaint and so much more. Such a Beautiful Gem tucked away in Genesse Depot. We started with Hand Crafted Signature drinks-Barrel Aged Old Fashion and an "I'm Your Huckleberry" Our table was spot on ready at reservation time. Our table crisp and cozy. Greeted by our server who was attention to detail from the Tiger Prawns to Lobster Bisque to Filet with demi glaze to Chocolate Sponge Cake and ohhh that Grasshopper Ice Cream Drink. Well here we go, the truth. Used to be the TOP Restaurant in the area!! Then the longtime owners (Patty & Kurt) sold to some Milwaukee non-restaurant dude. He immediately remodeled and it looks great... HOWEVER, the food has without doubt gone DOWN and the prices have gone way, way UP. Not a winning formula. So, the fact is many of the nearby folks with some money no longer (sadly) go there as many of the owners Milwaukee so called big shots come out to Genesee (once) to see his restaurant. Sad to say, we no longer have Corporate meetings/dinners here and no longer stop in to see friendly faces for an after-work cocktail as most of the popular staff were fired and replaced with untrained, uncaring youngsters new to the service industry. As this continues the (former) long time customers are betting when this owner figures out his losing strategy and sells!!! read more

A huge THANK YOU to The Union House for helping make my in-laws' 50th wedding anniversary absolutely memorable! My husband emailed Dan, the General Manager, a few weeks in advance alerting him to the anniversary celebration for our party of six. He was more than happy to help us making the evening special. We asked if he would be able to help create a special experience by having a cake brought to the table at the end of the evening. Dan and the staff went above and beyond our expectations! On Friday evening, we were immediately greeted and the special couple was congratulated once they confirmed our reservation. We were immediately seated and our waitress, Jessica greeted us with excitement and true joy to help us make the night special. The staff had cards at the table as well congratulating them on their anniversary, which was such an appreciated touch. Jessica did an amazing job explaining the menu and helping our party feel welcome in the beautiful space. Drinks and dinner were amazing and there was only appreciation for all the dishes. Seriously, the chef did an amazing job creating the variety of dishes we had. At the end of the meal, Jessica brought out a beautiful cake that the staff baked in house! We had high expectations for this restaurant after seeing how many positive comments but now I too am a believer. We started off with an old fashioned, she took the house one and I chose the Wisconsin sweet. They were both awesome, so good my wife got the mix to take home. We then had the French onion soup (May have been the best I have ever had) and my wife chose the crab cake (She said top 10) which I tried too and thought it was good. We then had two filet minions with lobster and thought they were really good with a sauce just a bit on the salty side. I really wish I had room for dessert but no such luck. Service was top notch with a pleasant atmosphere, you can actually carry on a conversation and hear each other. Don't you hate when they bring your appetizer and one minute later here comes your dinner. Well no worries here! You can enjoy your course without having to gulp it down as your next course gets cold. The only negative thing is it's dark, so dark I had to use phone light to see menu and bill. My husband and I visited last night for one of our first date nights out and it was such a lovely experience. We arrived ahead of our reservation so we grabbed a seat at the bar and had some cocktails. I tried the Love Potion cocktail first and it was very refreshing. Then I switched to a dirty martini and it was served in an aluminum glass - a very nice touch. My husband tried a couple bourbons and was very impressed with the spirits selection overall. The bartenders were very hospitable and seemed very knowledgeable as well. Once we sat for dinner we started out with the Lobster Rolls appetizer and the Mushroom Tart. WOW these were both SO good. The Lobster Rolls were the perfect lobster mix to bread ratio and packed so much flavor. The Mushroom Tart was also extremely flavorful. We loved both appetizers. Then we split a main entree, the Braised Short Ribs with an extra veggie on the side - broccolini. This was incredibly rich without being too much or too salty which can happen with this type of dish. We were too stuffed for dessert, but the options sounded amazing and will definitely have to same room so we can try next time. We were there this week to celebrate my birthday. The service is warm, and excellent! This place is reminiscent of an old supper club , very inviting and comfortable. The service is outstanding. They do not miss a beat. As for the food, it too, is outstanding. If you like wild mushrooms, I highly suggest their mushroom tart as an appetizer. So very delicious their union salad dressing is a vinaigrette however, it has a sweet flavor to it and is outstanding as well. I believe that you could not possibly get a better steak anywhere else. Bar none. The flavor will make you melt. They also have variety of wild animal, seafood, specials, etc.. you will not lack for anything. They are so friendly and loving. Celebrating a close friend's birthday and decided to try someplace new because we LOVE supper clubs. So glad we tried Union House! The service was excellent. I will admit, we arrived hoping for prime rib; however, we were told there wasn't prime rib, but excellent steaks! We both tried the filet, and it did not disappoint. Filet, sautéed mushrooms, French potato and roasted asparagus - absolutely delicious!!! After diner we stopped at the bar for a couple ice cream drinks and the bartenders were so nice! For those of you who have been reading my reviews, you might already know that 3 years ago I had moved my 86 year old father up here to MKE from St. Louis. I'm a vegetarian and he is a dedicated steak lover. And, being from Missouri, he is rather opinionated about what a good steak should be. I've taken him all over the area in search of a cut of meat that would fit his elevated standards. Even though he has been happy at a few places he had never commented upon the steak to the degree he did after our first dinner at The Union House. The place is in a historic olde tymey depot area in a 19th century building. We found ourselves back in time. The service was excellent and the place was relatively quiet for a Thursday. Anyhow, back to the good part. My father said to me, "Damn, that might have been the best steak I've had." I asked him if he meant since moving to Wisconsin but he corrected me. "No, ever." He had the center cut Angus filet with peppercorns inserted. Dan, the chef and GM came by during our second visit the following week to talk to us. He was really gracious and offered some off the menu vegetarian dishes he could prepare for me. That sort of customer service coupled with outstanding food is magic. So, huzzah! I found a new place we love. Thank you, Union House! You've made my hard-to-please father jubilant. And, that makes me happy. Five stars happy. read more

A perfect place for an intimate family gathering! We had a group of 11 and got the VIP treatment. It was quite honestly not just a dinner, it was an experience. When we walked in we were greeted as if they knew us. The Friendly faces made everyone feel comfortable. It started with our waitress, Jessica. Not only was her presentation of the menu colorful and upbeat, she made you feel at home and had the perfect personality for our group. The drink menu had a great selection of wines, whiskeys and mixed drinks. I really liked the door county cheery-tini! We started with the bacon and fig flatbread. The puff pastry was amazing. My favorite was the heirloom tomato panzanella. Others really enjoyed the Oysters Rockerfeller. The dinner options were vast from stingray to duck to kangaroo as well as a hearty bone in rib-eye and a filet. My filet was perfectly done and melted in my mouth. I also tried the duck and bone in ribeye which were great as well. Just when I thought I couldn't eat anymore, the peanut butter cup kept calling my name. I saw this gorgeous big Victorian looking home and wanted to check it out. We stopped in for an impromptu visit on a whim at 4pm, right as they were opening up. I asked if we were too early and the bartender told us the door was unlocked so we should come right in. He was so warm and gracious without being cheese-y. I like that. We weren't sure how hungry we were and decided to sit at the bar for an appetizer and a cocktail. We ended up ordering many things to share. Wow!! In my humble opinion, everything from cocktails to dessert was delicious!! I was very impressed with the variety and quality of wines, whiskeys and cocktails. The options seemed limitless. I loved my Lemon-tini. My friend had a Cosmo-esque Martini and her husband tried a classic Old Fashioned. My martini was shaken perfectly and was poured ice cold into a stainless steel martini glass. After dinner, my friend tried the martini made with vodka and coffee. It even had a garnish of coffee grounds dusted over the top in the shape of the letters U and H for Union House. Nice touch! We started with the Mushroom Tart. My friend said she would order 2 and make it her meal next time. We also shared, a Salad Du Jour with a beautiful variety of lettuces, blueberries, pistachios and goat cheese dressed with a gorgeous lemon vinaigrette, Balsamic Roasted Brussels Sprouts, Dauphinoise Potatoes, Scallops over cauliflower vanilla puree with fresh corn, brussels sprout leaves and cauliflower florets. Everything was out of this world amazing!!! Of course we shared a dessert too. We loved the Schaum Torte of baked meringue, vanilla ice cream, whipped mousse and raspberries. I am still thinking of it! Aside from the fantastic cocktails and food, The Union House offers quintessential hospitality. We were in a classic Wisconsin supper club and it showed. Rick, Nick and Barb (but we called her Chick because it rhymed with Rick & Nick) were working the bar like pros. They made sure to warmly greet everyone who walked in no matter how busy they were. They were very attentive to us our entire visit. They told us stories of the building, the business and the new owners. I thought they were all so fun and Nick told us he was so happy we came in because he thought WE were fun. What a wonderful evening made even better because of this impeccable staff. We each received a cute little parting gift boxed Chocolate Truffle!! Class act!! By the time we left, the place was hopping. Regulars and first timers, families and dates all came to enjoy what The Union House has to offer. There are comfy booths and tables in two different areas of the restaurant. I loved the tiny table tucked away for a romantic dinner. I also saw dining on the front porch. I cannot stop thinking about this lovely restaurant that I think everyone should experience. They also offer wine pairing evenings etc. Visitors from afar should make the trip to Ten Chimneys, do a little shopping and enjoy a fantastic dining experience. Well, I finally made the 40 min trek to hear what all The fuss was about and boy was I happy that I did. This place is a true oasis centered in a sweet little town. Everything we had was spectacular and the true standouts were the salmon, the red deer and blackened shrimp appetizer. I can't wait for my beach vacation to be over so I can come back and polish off a bowl of the lobster bisque all by mysel. What a hidden gem! From the charming location to the ambience, service, and (most importantly) the meal, absolutely wonderful experience. The wild boar ragu was absolutely delicious with a house made pasta that was made perfectly and wasn't heavy at all. My date had the lamb chops which were cooked perfectly and I sampled a bit of the parsnip purée which was so smooth it looked like whipped cream. Absolutely everything was amazing!! For a starter, we had the carpaccio. We had the wild game special - the cassoulet - and the filet with dauphinoise potatoes for our mains. For dessert, we had the schaum torte and banana bread pudding for dessert. Every single bite put smiles on our faces. I'm sad to say, we can't recall our waitresses name, but she was extremely detail oriented, very friendly, but not too friendly, and she explained everything very well. It had been years since we'd eaten at the Union House. It really hasn't changed much - which is a good thing! I particularly like how they always have a wild game special that gives you a chance to try dishes you probably won't see very often anywhere else. Between us, we had the red deer and the short rib for entrees. Both were fantastic. I really enjoyed the deer, being a big fan of venison, and the short rib was fall-apart tender and coated with a shiny, flavorful glaze. Just terrific! We finished up with the house specialty dessert - the schaum torte. Wow! One of the best of this dessert that we've tried. It is easy to see why the place is known for it.
