Been wanting to try this spot because of their fan tuan and finally made it out. They mentioned it was going to be a 30min wait but I think they were ready quicker. I would recommend coming to grab one for breakfast or lunch! It was a bit saltier to my liking so if they did more pickled mustard greens and less pork floss that would have been ideal for me! A healthy serving for the price too Added on the egg tarts while I was there since they looked tasty. They are big, thicc bois tho lol. I never had egg tarts so deep but I enjoyed the custard flavor. The crust wasn't the flaky kind but I didn't mind. Also grabbed the savory soy milk. It was like curdled soy milk or broken up tofu with savory toppings. Right when I moved to Seattle in 2016, my aunt and uncle brought me here the first time I went. They told me, "If you are looking for Taiwanese breakfast, this is the spot to go to on Saturdays. They sell out, so get there early!" That was the only time I had been to eat their breakfast. I have eaten food brought to me from them a couple times since. But this past Saturday, it was around 12:00 PM on a Saturday and I was driving by Bellevue, and I thought to myself, "i should stop by Tofu 101", and I did just that and have no regrets! Because their Taiwanese food is really THAT good. There was a minimal line when I got there, but by the time I left, the line was long and out the door. Sadly they were sold out of rice rolls and Chinese fried doughnuts. But I did still pick up a ton of goodies. I bought: - Yo Fan - Pork Rice Bowl - Egg Tarts - Soy sauce marinated cold tofu - Soy marinated bean curd cold I was so excited for all this food! I wish I had bought more lol. Their rice bowls were still warm. The egg tarts were 3 for $9+, which I found them kinda pricey, but they are pretty large. I love this place so much that whenever my friends/family visit from Seattle I make them bring me snacks from here in their carry-on! I've tried the: - fan tuan - pork baos - egg tarts - soy milk The fan tuan is so much better than anything you can find in the bay area, both SF and south bay! The Chinese donut inside is nice and crispy and they're generous w/ the pork floss and pickled veggies. The baos are well-seasoned and soft too! BUT my favorite and most surprising item was the egg tart!! SOOO soft and melt in your mouth for the filling, and the crust is flaky but has a good weight to it. This place is totally a gem in Bellevue. I have been coming here multiple times since finding out about it and always left happy. Parking: can be hard to find on the weekend, but it is fairly easy to find parking nearby and walk a short distance to the store. Inside: the store is very small and has enough space for everyone to form a line to checkout the items in the fridge, hot items and checkout. The line moves very fast and is worth the wait! There is no dine-in space, but there are cutlery and napkin available so you can grab them when you checkout. The cutlery is on a shelf to your left after you checkout and ready to head out of the store, so don't forget to grab it. Food: Purple rice roll/Fan tuan: very affordable, there are lots of filling and the size of it is quite big. I couldn't finish it in one sitting. I love the crunchy Chinese donut inside the roll. Keep in mind if you can't finish it and save the rest for later, don't wait too long because the Chinese donut will join longer be crispy and it won't be as good. Soy milk and salty soy milk: both are tasty and warm, perfect for a cold morning. Braised pork rice: it is soo good, exactly what I expect for braised pork rice, it makes great comfort food. Chinese donut: they are huge and for a great price. I have tried the buns in the fridge (forgot which one) but they are quite good. And every time I go back to Taiwan to visit relatives, my heart and stomach Kong's for Taiwanese breakfast. And in particular, a fan tuan (rice roll). In Taiwan, it's so perfectly delicious and dirt cheap, and I can easily stuff my face with 3 of them in one sitting. Now, in the US, these rice rolls are difficult to find. Which is a tragedy. But when I heard Tofu 101 had them, I was stoked! So on an early Saturday morning, I ventured to Bellevue to order some. I ordered 3 (2 for me, 1 for my wife) and a half-gallon of sweetened soy milk. Ah, the perfect Taiwanese breakfast. So, regarding the rice roll, it was pretty good! Biting into one sent me in a nostalgic state of mind. They were really long and filling, and I would go back for more. BUT! The reason why my rating is not a 4/5, but a measly 3, is because my wife found a ROCK in hers! We were eating in silence and there was a loud crunch, and my wife picked out a pebble in her rice roll (picture to show). Oh MY GOD I have been searching for a spot exactly like this in Seattle! They make ALL of my favorite traditional Taiwanese treats - tofu skins ($4.50), dou fu fa (tofu pudding, $2.50 for almond flavor), zong zi (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaf), all sorts of bean curd products, buns, fan tuan ($4.50, I think you have to ask for it). Good quality, fresh, and fairly priced as well. I'll note that the fan tuan doesn't have the traditional chewy you tiao center, it's crispy and crunchy which my boyfriend liked better. God bless Tofu 101. It is a godsend frrr. The frozen homemade dumplings, fan tuan, hot soy milk, and huge ass egg tarts are to die for. If it wasn't so far from me I'd be making a trip here like it's my local grocery store. I always stop by here on my way to Mt. I remember when their purple rice rolls were only served on Saturdays! Purple rice rolls are one of my favorite breakfast items whenever I visit Taiwan. When I was living in Factoria, I was absolutely stoked that they served purple rice rolls near me! I love their vegetable buns as well as their shao bing (sesame flatbread) you tiao (fried crispy donuts). A few things to note: - This parking lot is one of the worst places in Bellevue. Be prepared to maneuver your way and avoid hitting other cars/pedestrians while trying to squeeze into tiny parking spots. I'm rating only the egg tart, I've not tried anything else. Given that the other customers were all asian and getting food, I'm assuming this is a legit place. Anyway, I'm a big fan of Portuguese egg tarts, so every time I see an egg tart with brown spots on the top, my instinct kicks in and I have to try it. This one at Tofu 101 is not a classic egg tart with a puff pastry-ish shell, it has a thick short crust shell that encloses a smooth and soft custard filling. I have to say that I really liked the shell, I love short crust or shortbread in general. The custard is very good, even though I'd prefer it a bit sweeter, this one is not sweet at all. Overall I really enjoyed it, so much so that I ate 2 out of three. Recommended! read more

I definitely wasn't expecting to have a Taiwanese breakfast during my trip to Seattle, but this place popped up and gave me some cravings! We were traveling east to Snoqualmie Falls, and wanted to pick up some food along the way. Luckily, I found Tofu 101 during my Yelp search. We got here early Saturday morning, and there was already a line out the door. The place itself is pretty small, so the line wasn't actually too bad. There is a freezer with a bunch of pre-made food that you pass, and then the hot plates with ready to be eaten food. We got various buns and some rice rolls. The rice rolls were behind the counter so you had to explicitly ask for them. The donuts were selling out every time they were prepped, so you had to explicitly ask for them and wait additionally. We got one pan fried bun that was absolutely delicious. The two steamed buns we got weren't as to my liking. The rice rolls were delicious too though. Overall, the prices were pretty low compared to what I was expecting, and I'd definitely come back. read more

Paid a visit to tofu 101 on a Saturday to pick up my favorite Taiwanese eats! I have been craving a rice roll (fan Tuan) and I'm so glad I could head over to the East side to grab one. Social distancing- I think this store does a good job as ensuring only 6 people are inside at once and everyone is very respectfully physically distancing in line. But occasionally, one person can't wait and breaks the rule and goes in! But the honor system is pretty phenomenal though. Food- -the fan Tuan was just ok. The Chinese donut inside was very very hard, which made it a little tough to eat. The salty soy milk was different than I expected, but it wasn't bad. -Taro cake: just taro, not bad and pretty filling. -Sesame puff pastry- Omgosh literally my favorite!! It's so simple, but so flavorful and it pairs well with the soy milk. -spicy chicken- this is in the cold section. I'm not sure if this is just chicken + LGM but it's pretty fantastic -chicken noodle salad- also in the cold section. I think it's a good meal, it's filling. I wish there was more chicken and more vegetables. -hot soy milk--- ugh it's heavenly!!! You have to ask fro it when you get up front and I highly recommend!! Been on a major Fan Tuan kick since my recent trip to Vancouver so I had to make a trip to the East side to get some more! This was Saturday morning so expectedly, the line was out of the door. Truly a simple, ready to eat- on the go type item. Personally, it was a perfect balance of pork floss, pickled mustard and Chinese doughnut and, naturally, better to eat fresh if you want to enjoy the crunchiness of it. Also grabbed a couple other items like the rice triangles with filling and braised pork bowl. Two months after I submitted my last review, I received a message from the business owner who promised to address the issues I had brought up in my review and invited me to try again. The business owner also offered to refund my purchase. I did promise that I would give it a try as long as they would like to improve. When I was contacted, the State of Washington was under a lockdown due to COVID-19, so I wasn't able to visit immediately. The business owner didn't forget about this, so she actually messaged me a few times to see when I could visit them again. I realized that they were so serious about this and really wanted me to try again. One day I brought my car to a nearby dealer for oil change, while waiting, I just walked into the store without advance notice. I picked up same items that I had purchased last time back in January, and let the cashier know what had happened. The cashier then offered my purchase for free. This time, the cashier was a different person. He's very polite and friendly. He also apologized to me about my unhappy experience in January. For the items I got, this time the Chinese donut in the rice ball was fresh and crunchy. It tasted so delicious. Yes, they did improve this. I also got sticky rice, which was also good. The only thing that made me give them only 4 stars is for the sweetened milk tea. It's not sweet at all. If it was unsweetened one, I would get it, but it said that it was sweetened, so I was a bit disappointed. But still, overall, I can see a big improvement. A Taiwanese shop that sells both hot and cold grab-and-go authentic food! A variety of dishes are offered, but they are well known for their soy dishes. Price is good too; I got a meal's worth for less than $10. ----- Purple Rice Roll (紫米飯糰): $4.75. These rice rolls are filled with youtiao (Chinese fried dough stick), meat floss, and pickled vegetables. A roll is rather filling and warm, although nothing too special about it. Fan tuans are kept behind the counter which you can request when checking out. ----- Tofu Pudding (豆花) (16oz): non-GMO soybean, sweet potato powder, calcium sulfate ($2.50). The tofu was silky and moist, and can certainly taste the soy. It's advised to accompany with the ginger syrup as it is plain to eat just by itself. ----- Ginger Syrup (紅糖薑汁) (12oz): ginger, brown sugar, water ($1). The syrup had a good balance of ginger and sugar so it wasn't too spicy or sweet. It isn't thick and I didn't use the whole container for a tofu pudding. ----- Living up to its name, various soy products are sold, such as unsweetened soymilk ($3.75 for a half gallon), sweetened soymilk ($3.95 for a half gallon), square fried tofu ($4 for four pieces), triangle fried tofu ($3.55 for 300g), and soybean residue ($1 for a bag). A mix of ready-to-eat and food to self-prepare can also be found in the fridges: packaged buns, dumplings, side dishes like seaweed knot and spicy pork ears, and typical market items like green onion flatcakes. I had expected more hot food options as I saw in the pictures, but didn't see any of the buns, tarts, bread, zongzi (sticky rice dumpling), and others out. The only choice I saw was a pork side dish. It has all the basic Taiwanese breakfast food, tapas (small dish) like bao zhi, zhong zhi, egg tart, and such... It is not a pastry place like 85c though. The name of the restaurant is a play on the name Taipei 101. Most people that don't know much about Taiwan will never get the reference. Regardless, they have a huge fan base. This is the place to get a taste of authentic Taiwanese food. The place can be intimidating for folks without a Chinese background. There are no directions but most people seem to understand the system. You wait in line and grab the items you want in a counter clockwise manner. Their signature dish is the Fan Tuan. A purple rice is used and it's only served on particular days of the week. I'd advise that you also get an extra order of Yo Tiao (long savory donut). Everyone ratio of Yo Tiao to rice is different. This way you can customize your own Fan Tuan. You have to order the Fan Tuan verbally when you get to the counter. They either have it in a cooler that's not visible or they will make it to order. One negative aspect is the price. Fan Tuan is a really basic breakfast dish. It's so popular that they've really increased the price quite a bit. On the other hand, I haven't found anywhere else that serves Fan Tuan with this quality in the Seattle area. read more

Fresh organic tofu and Taiwanese goodies? Yes please!! Although we came on a Thursday night, we did our best to clean them out haha so many goodies here! The soy milk and products are clean and exceptional! The spiced pig ears and beef shank were really mild and the price was amazing! We also got their bean curd and pressed tofu. Can't wait to amp up lent Friday's with their vegan products! Such a little gem in factoria. Can't wait to come on a Saturday morning for their weekend goodies! There's quite a few lunch options around the Factoria area, but for a quick and cheap lunch, Tofu 101 is one of the better places. Tofu 101 has a lot of options that makes it every lunch a unique one. The Meat Sauce over Rice is probably my favorite thing to order here. I've probably eaten this at least 10+ times. This bowl has a lot of rice and a generous portion of stewed pork and daikon. In the past, this rice bowl used to only be $4, but I think the portion has gotten bigger, so it's still worth it. In addition, I would also recommend the Purple Rice Roll. You won't find anything like this anywhere in Seattle. What was once a special on Wednesday's and Saturday's has now turned into a daily item due to its popularity. The Purple Rice Roll is a Chinese Donut wrapped around Pork Floss and then wrapped around again with purple rice. I've you have never had it, it may look strange at first, but the combination of the ingredients all work. Not a fan of the somewhat adventurous, they also have your regular Chinese food fare like the Steam Pork Buns, with or with out cabbage, Chinese Donuts, and much, much more. Their Portuguese Egg Tarts are also a must. Of course, they also have all kinds of tofu, but I'd recommend their dessert tofu. I don't want to hate but to be honest, I'm not sure why this place still exists if they can't even make tofu anymore (machine broken. No plans to replace.) There was a huge line out the door for this place on a Saturday early afternoon. This was my first time but I was expecting more options. Special note: you have to ask for the luo mi fan (purple sticky rice with pork and donut) since they keep it in a cooler by the counter (unmarked). Also, some of the items only had descriptions in Chinese so I couldn't tell what everything was. I got the sticky rice which was delicious. Not too familiar with the eats on the east side, so I hit up the ol' Yelp and saw this was close to where I was doing some errands, so I came by. Next door is Jammy Jims...aka Jimmy Johns, so go towards that. I wasn't looking for a big meal but rather something to eat on the go, so I decided to get some steam baos, maybe get a sweet item, then some stuff for later. It's a small little mom & pop shop, mainly grab & go items, refrigerated/frozen items, a steam table with baos and sticky rice. No tables so it wont be physically possible to dine-in. Sticky rice was ok, baos were ok, frozen dumplings were ok, sweet & savory items were all ok too. It's not bad, everything was just ok which is fine. Nothing really blew my hair back or blew me away, so my experience was limited to no blowing here. Maybe I went wrong by not getting tofu items, hence the name, may come back to check those items out whenever I'm back. Staff lady was nice, she rang me up, I paid, she bagged up my stuff and I left...pretty simple. Prices are pretty good, you can get a good amount of stuff without spending a lot. I'll be honest, for a Taiwanese breakfast place, their cooking is quite mediocre. Sriracha in pig ear? I've tried a dozen things from here and they are all quite a bit worse than what you can easily find in Los Angeles. A lot of it comes down to laziness maybe? They are one of the only places in Seattle serving fresh soy milk and Chinese crullers.. they have zero competition up here and can also price 30% higher. Unfortunately my cravings keep me coming back for more.
