Tofu 101 is an OG asian grocer with amazing hot foods. My friend and I dropped by for some grab-n-go fan tuan and bao buns. The shop is dim and homey, with shelves and freezers of products. We came early and got our food quickly. The pan fried meat bun was so delicious and clearly hand-made. They tasted just like the ones my grandma used to make. The fan tuan was cheap and large, carbs in carbs sandwiched with some pork floss and pickled veg. I love that they use purple rice, it makes me feel healthier HAHAH. The you tiao inside was super crispy, which provides nice contrast with the soft, fluffy rice. My only nitpick was I wish there was a bit more pickled veg and pork floss, as it was a bit bland. Been wanting to try Tofu 101 for so long and finally got to. I got the purple rice roll, chive dumpling, and red bean bun. They were all quite good but didn't stand out as much as I thought it would. The donut in the rice roll was quite hard? Not sure if that's how it's supposed to be, but I was thinking it would be a little chewy. I really enjoyed it except for the Chinese donut. I thought it was wayyy too crunchy. It's not soft in the center at all and seemed more like a cracker. It's unlike the Chinese donuts I've had before. I usually had them Hong Kong-style, so not sure if this is Taiwanese or if they just like to make them super crunchy. I particularly like their fan tuan, ba wan, and soy milk, but the sticky rice, lu rou fan, and cold noodles are great too! The zongzi are absolutely enormous and yummy but they do have a lot of peanuts which isn't my fav. My Taiwanese friend recommended Tofu 101 after I had given up on finding a good spot in Seattle area. I came on a Saturday around 1pm and the parking lot was pretty busy and a little bit of a mess due to the other businesses in the area. I didn't have trouble finding a spot however there were a lot of cars parked over the line. Tofu 101 is a grab and go place. Upon entering, you have a selection of frozen items, then refrigerated items, and then some pastries. The hot foods are closer to the register. Braised pork rice (滷肉飯): the pork is on the fattier side however the braise is really flavorful and delicious. The pork also contains some sliced stewed shallots as well. You'll find turnip, an egg, and a small block of chewy tofu (百頁豆腐). Overall a delicious item. Fan Tuan (紫米飯糰): a traditional Taiwanese breakfast item - it contains a piece of fried crueler with pork floss and diced turnip. Overall pretty solid but I wish you could customize it. The fan tuan is warm in a red cooler by the register. Chicken cold noodle (雞絲涼麵): solid lunch item. There's a hearty serving of shredded chicken along zucchini and carrot strips. The sauce is on the watery side but pretty delicious. Chewy tofu (百頁豆腐): slightly springy and has a light marinade. Tofu skin (豆腐皮): pretty thick pieces with a light flavor. Overall I'd give Tofu 101 a 4.5 as they had a big selection but I wish they had more hot food items. Will definitely be back when I'm craving some Taiwanese food. read more

Huge support for tofu 101, support local! From a veg perspective: - Their frozen veg sticky rice is excellent, lots of variety of ingredients (chestnuts, peanuts, mushrooms.) - Fresh veggie buns also have good flavor and textures ( vermicelli noodles, cabbage, mushrooms). A quick stint in the microwave has led to some lovely last min lunches. - Tofu pudding is soft and silky. - Tofu skin fresh and seasoned well for adding into meals- not too sweet or salty. - Soy milk is fresh. Granted- having eaten here for many years, the food can go through periods of being uneven esp after they take vacations (weirdly extra soft tofu pudding, tofu skin with really spotty seasoning and oddly massive chunks, old off tasting chestnuts in the sticky rice.) And sadly the 5 spiced firm tofu blocks disappearing. But usually after a few months everything normalizes. - Recently, the yu tiao tastes like it's been deep fried in reused oil that's used a bit too many times, so there is a funky off flavor and smell. Service: Most is self serve, a very small store with a u shape set up. Cashiers here have been fairly polite and efficient. When the purple rice rolls appeared, that was my standing order on Wednesdays and the occasional Saturday. Now apparently available every day! The people working there were very kind. I got pig ears, tofu skin, and braised tofu. The pig ears were very crunchy, thick, and the spice creeps up on you in a good way! The tofu skin tasted salty and sweet with a nice tender yet slightly chewy texture. The braised tofu was salty and firm. I could have used a little more flavor in the braised tofu but it was still good. I'm definitely coming back for more like the tofu and ginger syrup, the beef tendon, and the pork feet!
