TOKIO is located in the heart of downtown Denver where prices of food are exaggerated . The richest of the rich play and work around here . That is why prices at TOKIo is a bit high . TOKIO isn't just a ramen spot (although ramen is DEFINTELY their specialty ) . On the other hand , Tokio is a full izakaya , ramen and bar : Ramen - very extensive . I always get tonkatsu but they have at least 5 more different types of broth . Their appetizers change a lot but they have good food like siu mai , etc . The Skinny: Great ramen & sushi in Denver Atmosphere: Cute japanese spot with 2 floors & bar seating. Came here twice, once for dinner and once for happy hour. Didn't have to wait either times but could see it getting crowded during peak time periods. Food: The ramen here is great. The soup base and ingredients were very well balanced. My one gripe is the pork isn't the best I've had for ramen. It was a bit too lean and dry vs the fatty melt in your mouth pork that I'm used to. If the pork was a bit better it would be 5 stars. Would recommend the Spicy Shoyu and Tonkatsu. The salmon sushi roll we had was also very good and fresh. Came here a second time for happy hour and was a bit disappointed in the food. The spicy tuna and salmon skin rolls we got wasn't as good as expected. Not sure if it was just an off day or because it was us coming in during their late night happy hour. Service: Friendly service. We came in during a time where the AC was broken and there were very forthcoming and accommodating. Do want to note it can be a bit slower during busy time periods. Tokio is a Japanese fusion restaurant located near Coors Field. It offers a traditional Japanese menu with a western twist. The space is your cookie cutter suburban restaurant except located in an urban environment. The service was pretty albeit uneven. The sushi was fresh and too well made, with the exception of the rice which had the tendency to fall apart upon picking up. We started with the chicken karage which was badly executed. The breading was either undercooked or over cooked, but it felt like the skin was left on the chicken so the texture was weird and hard to bite into. The miso ramen was deceiving because it looked small, but actually a very large portion. It was decently executed, but did lack a miso flavor and the bamboo shoots was hard to bite. Overall, it was an uneven experience with the sushi being cool and fresh, but everything cooked left me disappointed. read more

Update: I don't know what has happened to this place over the last six months but it has gone down the drain quickly... Every time we have been in orders have been messed up or late or completely forgotten by the wait staff. The kitchen staff/food is amazing which is very unfortunate as the servers do not offer proper service. When we were in tonight our order was completely messed up and I asked to speak with the manager to which I was told by three different employees that there is no manager right now and they are in a managerial limbo. I can't believe how unprofessional things have become. I know I'm not the only one noticing this, as today it was snowing and usually when the weather even gets remotely cold, this place is packed right at 5 PM when they open... My husband and I were interested in another restaurant that was closed for renovations. We were walking down the block and were intrigued by the Ramen dishes offered. As it turned out ramen wasn't available that night for some reason. The restaurant was offering a small beer, saki and some other drinks because the Ramen wasn't available. Good option for consistent ramen and sushi! The fish and vegetables always taste fresh. Tokio's vegan ramen is some of the best I have had, and the portions are very generous. The miso soup is also one of my favorites and comes loaded with crispy tofu and veggies (the most filling miso I have ever had). One of my favorite parts about Tokio is daily happy hour! A selection of rolls from the menu are available for around $3-$4 each -- a great deal. The salmon hand roll and the tuna roll are two of my favorite rolls. The happy hour menu also includes some appetizers and drinks. Service is always very quick and friendly. If you are wanting a good ramen spot, look no further. We were lucky enough to snag a spot at the bar on a Sunday evening. They don't do reservations here, but It was fun to sit at the bar and watch the sushi chefs do their thing. We were in the mood for some warm and spicy ramen and stumbled upon Tokio. Our server mentioned the 2 most popular ramens were Diablo and the tonkotsu. Both DELICIOUS. we got the tonkotsu extra spicy and it was delicious - perfect mix of salty and spicy.. and it's a real spicy (gave me some sniffles.. but the good kind!) The Diablo was way creamier and milder - it had a perfect balance of flavors and I was lucky to get to try both. The pickled ginger in both was unique and gave a little bite of freshness and sweetness. Would probably order the same 2 again next time to have the best of both worlds. The sushi looked delicious! Definitely on the pricier side but the different rolls sounded and looked so good. Might have to try a roll next time. Portions on the ramen were huge. We were stuffed!! It genuinely pains me to write reviews like this. But after trying this local spot twice (3 years apart), the service and the food were of one-star quality. Let me preface this by saying we live right across the street from Tokio, so if it were good restaurant we'd be here all the time. But instead, we have only been here twice in the 3 1/2 years we've lived in the neighborhood. I'd like to mention that the one star I'm giving Tokio is solely for the presentation of the food. That is the absolutely only thing they excel at. Take a look at my photo and you can understand how one could assume that the food would be tasty. Unfortunately , that assumption would be wrong. As other reviews have mentioned, the food is far too salty. The first time we went here, we got a few sushi rolls. Nothing special. This time, we decided to try the ramen. My boyfriend got the Tonkotsu and I got the special Summer Ramen. I could only eat two bites of my ramen because it tasted so salty and just had a very odd flavor (my boyfriend described it as "Grocery Store Sushi Flavor"). My boyfriend's Tonkotsu ramen was sub par. We have been to several other Ramen joints in Denver and he usually gets a tasty Tonkotsu (major shout out to Jinya, who has the best ramen I've had!). He finished his ramen, but it was nothing to write home about. While my summer ramen sat with two bites taken out of it. This is a perfect segue to talk about the service at Tokio... The first time we came here, our server went missing halfway through our meal. He literally never came back and we had to flag down another server who responded with, "Ugh, he does this all the time." She ended up grabbing our check for us, otherwise we probably would have been stuck waiting on our original server for the rest of the evening. On our second visit to Tokio, we were seated upstairs and had a female server. After we were seated by the hostess, it took a noticeable amount of time until we saw our server to greet us and ask us for our drink order. So long, that we just ordered food and drinks at the same time due to fear of her not coming back soon. My boyfriend and I recalled the previous serving experience and just hoped this one would be much better. Spoiler alert... it was nearly the same. After taking our order for food and drinks, she only came back at the end of our meal. The hostess delivered our food. Had our server checked in with us even once during our time there, she would have realized that the entirety of my meal was still on the plate because it was so inedible. By the time she finally came to check us out, I was hoping she'd see that my meal was all still there and would ask if I disliked it or wanted something else instead. She saw the full plate and didn't even ask if there was anything wrong with it! She just took it away and brought the check, which charged us full price for my meal. She didn't offer to take off the meal or even reduce the price. Pretty basic etiquette for a server when someone doesn't touch the food due to the taste. Not even an offer of getting me something else instead. We put our credit card with the check and waited for her to come back. But she never did. A different server ended up offering to check us out. This is TWO times that this has happened at Tokio. They very obviously need better servers. I don't understand how this type of experience can be the norm. Overall, I cannot and would not recommend Tokio. I'm very easy to please (feel free to check out my other reviews!). All I need is some good eats and decent service. So when a restaurant compels me to leave a one-star review, you know that something is wrong. As we walked home, my boyfriend and I agreed that neither of us have any desire to return to Tokio for bad food and even worse service. Went here for my birthday dinner last night and WOW, just WOW! Front the appetizers to the entrees to the dessert everything was amazing. Tokio is doing dine in but walk ins only, no rsvp. Just call ahead and get your name on their list, trust me the wait was worth it. Off street parking, kinda hard especially on a Saturday night but we managed. Our server was very attentive and quick. The atmosphere was hip and clean. Not a lot of tables (damn you covid) but doable. Food came out pretty quick too, not to long of a wait considering how busy they were. So we ordered, baked mussels, takoyaki, gyoza, miso soup, hip hop roll, Chilean sea bass, and cremoso diablo ramen. Baked mussels 5/5- baked to perfection, comes in 5 and I still wanted more. Takoyaki 3/5- I felt like this was a tad bit over cooked. Gyoza 5/5- pan fried to perfection and it was HUGE, the filling inside was very tasty and portion correctly. Miso soup 5/5- okay hear me out, this was probably the best miso I've had. The tofu inside was pan fried on the outside and still very soft in the inside and instead of seaweed it was chopped up baby bokchoy. The flavoring was everything I hoped for and for being a side soup, it was a generous amount! Hip hop roll 5/5- I'm still dreaming about this roll. MUST HAVE! The seared salmon on top really set the whole roll off. Chilean sea bass 3/5- was a tad bit over cooked also and the flavoring was a bit off, a bit too salty perhaps. Cremoso Diablo ramen- 5/5- hands down best ramen in Denver! Very rich and flavorful with a kick in your mouth. Green tea cheesecake 5/5- so fluffy and perfect in every bite. I had bookmarked Tokio a long time ago as a ramen place I wanted to try. A friend of mine had told me it was her favorite. I finally made it here last weekend, but was not overly impressed. I had a couple interesting Japanese beers, but they were rather pricey. For an appetizer, we went with the Chicken Kara Age (Japanese-style fried chicken) and it was tasted fine, but there was nothing really memorable about it. For my ramen, I opted for the Tonkotsu with 100% pork broth (cha syu pork, bok choy, pickled bamboo, wood ear mushroom, carrot, green onion, red pickled ginger, dry chili, spicy sesame oil). The broth was very good, and the veggie bits paired well. The noodles were fine. It was the protein with which I took issue. It was an extremely lean piece of pork. And, it was blatantly obvious, based on the ambient temperature, that ice-cold slices of pork had been slipped into the hot soup. This reduced the overall soup temperature, while still keeping the pork unpleasantly cold in the middle. This one significant flaw, took this from a B+ bowl of ramen to a C, in my opinion. Service was friendly. The space is nice. The table that brought a very small child and let him stand on a barstool while shouting, dancing, and disturbing multiple tables can burn in hell. The restaurant staff can also take some of the blame for this ambience killer by pointedly ignoring the potential for a costly lawsuit had this little monster fallen to the floor. read more

There's so many things to love about Tokio.. opened late night, great food, excellent service and amazing atmosphere. We started with the king trumpet mushrooms which was delish and just a nice light start to our dinner. Chicken karage, which is probably one of the better chicken karages I've had. Also Ordered a variety of different sushi and rolls, but the star of the meal was definitely the katsu curry rice. They definitely make one of the best katsu curry rices that I've had. The curry flavoring is just perfect, the meat is perfectly battered and fried, just one bite and you're hooked. I'm not one who eats crazy quantities of food to get full. I struggle to finish a single Chipotle burrito. At Tokio, I had an appetizer and TWO orders of ramen and I was still HUNGRY. Seriously, come on.... noodles are cheap to make and so is soup broth. We ended up leaving and ordering a meal somewhere else to fill our bellies and spare our wallets more pain. This spot has some of my favorite ramen in downtown Denver. I don't eat seafood, so I get the Cremso Diablo Ramen every time I go here. It's their most popular ramen dish, with pork and chicken broth and heavy cream added as well. They have a lot of seating here for a small restaurant, I do a mix of take out and dine in here, and the food is consistently good. My friends I came here with ordered some sushi rolls and they are MASSIVE! Everyone was really satisfied with their meal here and had plenty to take home for leftovers. Service and ambiance 5 stars. Tonkatsu Ramen is a 6/10 The sushi meat they used was fresh. Rice was good. We ordered over 120 dollars worth of sushi but every bite of different sushi rolls tasted incredibly salty. They asked our opinions at the end of the meal and let them know about the potent salty flavor that overwhelmed the flavor profiles of sushi and proceeded to have three different members of the restaurant come over and let us know that there's no salt in their sushi, told us we were using too much soy sauce or something etc etc. We politely informed them that regardless of how the flavor happened it's what we were tasting which left a lackluster sushi experience for us. We were sharing our honest opinion without any other intentions behind it and the response we received felt weird. We were a group of 4 who have had the blessing of having amazing sushi all over the country and overseas so we consider ourselves a decent judge of flavor and profiles. I've been here a couple times now and I've enjoyed both my experiences here! I'm a very picky ramen eater so it takes quite a bit to appease this palate. If you're going for ramen options, I would highly recommend the Shoyu if you like a cleaner chicken broth. It's very flavorful yet not quite as heavy as a Tonkotsu broth would be. If you prefer a heavier and richer flavor with more layers and some spicy, my favorite ramen at this place is their Cremoso Diablo. It's a pork and chicken broth but also has cheese in it!!! I know...cheese in ramen!? It sounds ridiculous but it is executed very well. It has a lot of flavor and it all just meshes into a well rounded ramen dish that isn't quite traditional, but it's SUPER tasty! I've had their sushi here as well, I don't think you can really go wrong with any of their rolls. The fish looks and tastes fresh and the sushi chefs are super nice if you sit at the bar! Tokio was one of my go-to happy hour sushi spots when I lived in Denver. Now that I live somewhat faraway and because of COVID, I don't go as often. I went to Tokio for the first time in awhile and the host seated us immediately even though there were several reservations. We sat away from the other parties and had a 90min time limit, which wasn't an issue since there were only two of us. We ordered takoyaki, tuna roll, salmon roll, sea bream nigiri, sexy roll, and rock n rolla. The takoyaki was crispy on the outside and soft in the middle - just how I like it! The specialty rolls were huge and flavorful. I enjoyed the sushi rolls and nigiri more due to the simplicity. Even though the dining experience was different, I still enjoyed eating at Tokio. I was worried that the pandemic would impact their business but I'm glad that they are still busy and have taken the necessary precautions to keep their customers safe. A fun, beautifully decorated restaurant, reminiscent of some Tokyo izakaya. We had the scallops and some sushi rolls to start, and finished it off with some delicious ramen. Drinks: delicious special drinks! We got the snowstorm special and it was mildly sweet and you couldn't taste the alcohol (I'm not mad abt it) Atmosphere: loud but comfortable! You can bring the family here or a cute date! Food: words can't explain how delicious everything was. Our party of 5 devoured everything! Ramen was delicious quality & sushi was fresh.
