It didn't blow my socks off but for a late night sushi joint you can't be upset about it. BUT... If this was marketed as a ramen place I would have to give it a three star review. Don't come here for the ramen. The meat was not worth the calories. The soft boiled egg was great. The broth and noodles were above average quality. Would come back for the apps and sushi but I would recommend removing the sushi from the menu or getting someone that is much more passionate about how the process and the ingredients. read more

Came here during happy hour. Tried a couple items off of that and got two bowls of ramen. The ramen broth was delicious! But the meat was a little dry, and i felt like I was eating a bowl full of bean sprouts not noodles. Maybe if I order it I have to ask for less bean sprouts? The wings off the happy hour menu were horrible! My little cousin who eats everything didn't even touch them! My husband who eats everything thought they were the worst wings in history! The ambiance of the place was cute and the service was fast and the sushi was good. The price was reasonable since I came here during happy hour. Automatically fell in love with this place from the first time I got introduced for a late night meal. I love raw fish and crave it most likely at least once a week, so this was a must try for me. I have to admit I was little skeptical, I was born and raised in San Francisco, so my raw fish expectations were high coming into this place. Tokio is probably one of my top go to restaurants whenever I visit the Mile High City. Hand rolls, on hand rolls, on hand rolls! I could never get enough here, and I can't stress how delicious their fish is. My favorite has to be the seared tuna, I think the garlic really brings out the flavor of this roll. The tempura shrimp is amazing as well. I like to kick off with the agadashi tofu or the karrage, the dark meat on the chicken is bomb. We tried the spicy shoyu ramen, which was really good too. The broth was really rich and the pork slices were big and soft. I'll most likely be coming back for more hand rolls. read more

This was my first visit here I am from out of town so when my plane landed at 10pm I was looking for some good comfort food open late. There is also street parking available. I was not disappointed I ordered the miso ramen which is spicy chicken & pork. Positive: great food, ambiance, and great portions. Love love loved it! We came for my birthday dinner and the service was great! The ramen was really delicious and the sushi was great. I had the Tonkatsu ramen and it was so savory! My brother had another bowl and really enjoyed. The sushi had a good amount of meat/fish in it which I was pleasantly surprised with! Full disclosure: I've only been to Tokio twice, and both were late night. Use your imagination. But both times it was delish. Four words for you: Three Dollar Hand Rolls! Their late night menu is great. I got 4 hand rolls for $13, plus I splurged with a bowl of miso ramen. Everything was delicious. The second time I went we got more hand rolls, which were again delicious, and more ramen, again delicious. This time I got one of the brothless ramens with dipping sauce, and it was really tasty. I had a dish like that when I was in Tokyo, and this version lived up. I'm so excited to get it again. The one main flaw of these meals was the fried octopus dish, which they seemed to highlight at the top of their late night/happy hour menu. Ugh. So much batter and so little flavor. Then they were covered in some kind of mayo-like sauce (maybe just mayo?), which made me gag. They should take this dish off the menu immediately and just move on with the rest of their great food. We went here for a dry ( no booze) dinner. So we'll have to go back to try some sake. We focused on the sushi, though we realized that ramen and their grilled items might be more their strong suit, which we didn't have, so we'll have to try those as well when we return. We ordered the spicy edamame which was super good. Then we ordered some sashimi and a couple of rolls. The sashimi was delic, but the rolls weren't the best with too much rice and fell apart. Gotta step your game up Tokio. I know we're all short-staffed, but if you're going to open then maybe shrink the dining room so the kitchen and the waitstaff can provide better service. You're charging city prices for sushi so make sure the chef doesn't send out if the rolls are falling apart. In my experience that means the rice is old. Invest in a second rice cooker if you don't already have one and make a half-time batch instead of a full one so that you always have fresh rice. Miso soup should be served hot. It wasn't. That's a first for me in ordering/eating miso for 20+ years. This is probably an item prepared by a server since you can keep it in a warmer all day. Check on it periodically to make sure the soup is hot. If smoke comes out when you lift the lid then you're golden. First time was the last time visiting here. There are a lot of sushi/Japanese/ramen places I've yet to try. Nothing stood out positively here. Even the service was spotty. First time I ordered a beer it was poured into a glass but the second time the bottle was left on the table for me to pour. Look, if you're not going to be around a lot then at least be consistent. Overall this place is pretty good. Came at 6:30pm on a Monday, all but one table was taken, but we preferred to sit at the bar. We ordered some nigiri, all pretty solid. I was a little worried because we're not on the coast anymore, but they all tasted fresh. For dinner we ordered the cremoso diablo ramen. The broth was indulgent but here's where my -1 star comes in. The chasu (pork) was bland and tough, probably not marinated at all. They give you an enormous amount of bean sprouts (I get it, it's the cheapest veggie and it fills the bowl) but it was in excess. I also did not like the red ginger they added in, it doesn't really go with the ramen and just seemed too artificial. Overall, staff was great but FYI there was a 45 min-- 1 hour wait to order sushi at around 7pm. Don't know if they were short on a sushi chef or if they always just have 1 guy. read more

Okay so I loved everything about this place. It probably helped that I sat at the bar and had exceptional service. Watching the chefs work behind the counter is always a nice treat. Ordered some sushi, ramen, chicken karaage and agedashi tofu. Everything tasted excellent. I started off with a generous serving of agedashi tofu. The crispy exterior and melt-in-your-mouth interior soaked in a delicious tsuyu broth was simply delicious. The chicken karaage was not as crispy as I'm accustomed to, but it was seasoned and cooked perfectly - juicy and tender. The tonkotsu ramen was very flavorful and the soft boiled egg was cooked just right. The sushi chef did a wonderful job making the shrimp tempura roll and sushi plate look and taste amazing. Both the tuna and salmon were very fresh. I had zero complaints. The sushi chef even apologized for being too slow on our order, but I didn't think it took too long. Perhaps the chef has changed since the previous reviewers. I came today wanting to try their curry katsu ramen. Our waiter also recommended the trumpet mushroom appetizer and gyoza as well. I have been to Japan, and frequent Japanese restaurants in California, so I have some experience with Japanese flavors. Trumpet Mushroom appetizer - One bite and both of us could not eat any more. The whole dish was drenched with an almost saltwater like saltiness. How does one make a sauce so salty.... Japanese food is supposed to taste delicate and balanced. Curry Katsu Ramen - Noodles were dry and clumpy from the get go. Sauce was WAYYYYY too salty. Even saltier than the mushrooms I just tried. The one-two punch of salt in my mouth ruined my appetite for the rest of the meal. The pork katsu was actually decent in tenderness and crispiness, but the sauce on top ruined the whole dish. Gyoza - claims to be housemade. Tasted very average, like a 3 star Chinese restaurant dumpling. Edible, but that's about it. Rainbow Roll - the only decent and normal tasting thing. Perhaps because it didn't require over salting/saucing (there was no sauce on the roll). If I came just for the Rainbow Roll, this would be a 4 or 4.5 star review. Lastly, the mixed greens on the mushroom appetizer and ramen seemed to come straight from a salad box. No dressing, no flavor. Seems a bit lazy or cheap from a restaurant perspective. How about a little ginger or ponzu dressing...? It might cost you 5-10 cents just to drizzle a little? The main reason for the one star (which i'm sitting in the parking lot writing), is because our waiter clearly saw that we didn't touch the mushroom appetizer or ramen because they were both inedibly salty, but still charged us in full for it. You should at least offer an alternative dish to the overly salted one you recommended.... I don't even expect a refund. Just give me something decent to eat. I hope the owner can take an honest look at this and try the curry and sauces i mentioned. If you can't honestly say it's too salty, then perhaps you need to call Gordon Ramsay for a reality check. Lol. Go try Quiero Arepas in the Avanti food and beverage if you want something tasty and memorable. I've tried a few other top rated restaurants in denver so far and Quiero Arepas really stands out. Sure, it's not japanese food, but at least the flavors there are very well balanced and tasty. Very sad I'm leaving this review, since the waiter seemed nice, but everything else about my experience left me sorely disappointed. read more

Loved my first dining experience here last night. Great laid back ambiance, traditional ramen done RIGHT LOVED the shiru, you can always tell a good ramen by the broth and quality of the noodles! My party and I was recommended to try Tokio by the owner of Domo Japanese restaurant after they couldn't accomodate a strict Vegetarian diet. Too bad for Domo, great for Tokio. We didn't see it until we came in the back entrance. The place is two levels and is decorated beauitfully. It is small but they seated us right away. My roommate and I ordered a yellowtail roll for appetizer. The fish was fresh and the roll was delicious. Was I blown away, no. I come from Vegas and believe it or not, but because they import the fish daily, sushi is amazing there. Even the small neighborhood places. I ordered the Spicy Shiyo ramen. It came quickly and in a beautiful bowl with lovel presentation (see pic.) I found the broth a little underseasoned. I was delicious but I was looking for a little more salt. I had to use the soy sauce to give it a little more flavor. The pork was cooked nicely. I loved the boiled egg. I want to cook all my boiled eggs like that. The yoke was soft and smooth. Went for the first time a few weeks ago -- Party of 3, got lucky enough to get seated at the bar directly in front of the Robata Grill. We got the Japanese Pickles appetizer to start -- good little snacky bites to pick at while waiting. I ordered the Tsukemen Ramen. YUM. I don't know if I will ever crave "assembled" ramen again! But then again, I'm a dipper. Burgers, fries, bbq, what have you... I like to dip! 5 star delicious. We had high expectations based on reviews and having lived in Tokyo for three years but Tokio was a miss. The gyoza we ordered as an appetizer came out still frozen in the center. Rather than give us a new order, the three the same pieces back in the pan which cooked the inside but left the outside of the guide burnt to a crisp in places. We wanted to order spicy tuna but skipped it because it was made with mayo, which is a pet peeve. (It's hard to find but spicy tuna made spicy with ground wasabi and finely chopped green onions is far superior and leaves room for the flavor of fish, unlike sriracha and mayo which are overpowering and unoriginal.) The highlight of the meal was maguro nigiri which was solid. Would recommend getting it if you go. My wife and I both had ramen as a main course. She had tonkotsu and I had spicy miso. Both of us were underwhelmed. The broth for both was thin and lacked flavor. The pork was not the traditional chashu that comes in ramen, but this may have been called out on the menu and I just missed it, which would be my fault for missing. Also, the miso was not spicy despite ordering it that way. The vegetables inside were good. All of this is to say that there are better Japanese restaurants in Denver that we would recommend before Tokio. read more

What an INCREDIBLE spot in Denver! There were about eight of us that stopped in one evening and it was such a wonderful experience from beginning to end. First of all, our server was incredible - he was so much fun and made the night very memorable. We all ordered a variety of things, but the main dishes we ordered as a whole was a variety of ramen bowls. Everyone loved them and couldn't stop raving about them all night. Also, we ordered about ten different sushi rolls and everyone loved them. To be honest, I can't remember the exact dishes everyone ordered. Did they change management? 2 of my last 3 visits have been a poor experience. One of them I ordered a simple salmon avocado and just got avocado. Who orders just avocado and rice? I feel that's an odd enough request that they should have verified on the phone. The other was this evening. I ordered and was told 15 minutes. After 40 minutes waiting for a text, I just came in since I'm just around the corner. Apparently they got my number wrong and it was just sitting there... little apology. Overall the he food is ok. It's a bit pricey for what you get, but it's close to me so it mostly makes up for it. It seems the portions have been getting smaller. Tonight's salmon avocado roll was particularly disappointing. I tried both the salmon and king salmon nigiri - the king salmon portion was larger but the fish itself is fattier and really tasty! Also tried the striped bass, which was good but not great. I do wish they carried albacore but regardless, solid sushi menu selection. Diablo roll was really good (I love garlic though); volcano roll was okay; spicy yellowtail roll (with avocado instead of cucumber) was really good! There is a little bit of a fusion thing going on (Mexican-Japanese eg cremoso diablo) but it's overwhelmingly Japanese and most of the options will be familiar to anyone who's been to a few sushi and/or ramen places. My friends and I have tried all the Ramen Denver has to offer and Tokio is by far the winner. From the tonkatsu to the miso to the air (vegan soy based). Best of all is the Cremoso Diablo- if you like things spicy. BEST BROTH. Our only complaint has been with the type of meat used. It's not very tasty or tender. I'm not a huge sushi person so I don't think I really deserve an opinion on that. Friendly staff- excellent service. Free parking in the garage behind the restaurant.
