Just love this izakaya. We've been coming to Tokkuritei since they were located in a tiny space on Sheridan Street. Followed them to the first Kapahulu location across from Zippy's Kapahulu then to their current second floor spot where Hee Hing used to be and next to my favorite tonkatsu restaurant Tonkatsu Tamafuji. Sake is my normal beverage of choice and Tokkuritei's selection never disappoints. Tonight I had Suntory draft and the big bottle of Asahi Super Dry. Our food selection included half portion of the salmon skin salad, unagi & natto/yamaimo temaki, agedashi tofu, amaebi karaage, asari sakamushi (clams), ikura sushi, nasu dengaku. We didn't order anything new but they continue to execute their menu very well. Service was great as it normally is. We chose Tokkuritei on the fly because our first choice was Alejandro's Mexican Food in Kapahulu but their parking lot was packed and after drive up Kaimuki Avenue and several side streets we gave up. Recently we've tried to get into Tokkuritei midweek and call for reservations several hours ahead with no luck. This time we were able to snag a 2-top during prime dinner hours. In summary I'd say that you really can't go wrong dining at Tokkuritei whether at their sushi bar or at a table. The staff have come and gone but the owner's the same and the restaurant is very well run. Parking was a reasonable $2 up to 8 o'clock when the parking attendant leaves for the night. On-street parking is hit or miss and as Hawaii slowly emerges from COVID restrictions the basement parking lot had ample open spaces. I'm starting to crave izakaya food again even though I'm still digesting tonight's dinner! read more

Located on Kapahulu in a mini plaza, you can find parking underneath for $2. Or street parking. There was some drama with the attendant so be careful when parking. The restaurant itself is pretty eclectic. There is a glass jar with snake inside where you can drink from this sorcery. We ordered a few sushi. Each one had a plus and a minus to each. Sauces were good, fish cuts were so-so. Rolls tasted kinda "mushy". I really wanted to love this place but it was just meh for me. I ordered the blue crab roll and broke out immediately for days. Yes I'm allergic to iodine but usually take a chance and am ok. I guess blue crab is a no. Not the restaurant's fault however. Busy was full for a work day so glad that they're thriving. read more

Been a patron at Tokkuri-Tei for many years and after what my son experienced tonight my family will never go back. My son ordered a wafyu hamburger steak which is still on their online menu. Waiter confirmed 2x if he wanted the wafyu hamburger steak. Cost is $14.50. When his bill came he was charged $36.00. He questioned the charge, wait staff met and said you ate it you have to pay for it. He told the staff the menu states: $14.50. They said we no longer have a wafyu hamburger steak. Refused to charge him for what he ordered and charged him the $36.00. My husband & I called the restaurant and initially the female who answered the phone hung up on us. Asked for a manager and was told they "no longer have a wafyu hamburger steak and the online menu should have been updated." He basically said the same thing " he ate it and has to pay for it." Absolutely no responsibility on the mistake in their part. There's MANY other izakaya's that have good food and DO NOT treat their customers like this. We won't ever come back. read more

My husband I got here close to 6 and was kinda surprised that it was relatively busy since we'd never seen it like that before. So we needed to practice patience, however, after sitting for a good 10-12 minutes, my husband went up to a waitress and asked if we could order. She said they have to go in order. What? So he sat back down and we waited another 10 minutes. Starting to lose patience and went to the waitress again and she said she'd be with us soon. We ordered a lot: fish with miso( they said they had to substitute the fish, which wasn't bad ), soft shell crab, the spider sushi roll, salmon skin salad that appeared to have little to no salmon skin, and asked for Zaru soba to take home. I couldn't eat the spider roll at all because tasted pretty funky. We tried the soba the next day and it was the worst I've ever had! Bottom line: food poisoning from raw fish. Service is very slow and some servers not well trained. Perhaps to cut costs Tokkuri-Tei has cut back on the number of employees and prep time start (they come in later to prep for opening at 5:30)? But the worst part is how bad the food is now. We used to often go to Tukkuri Tei YEARS AGO when it was a cute small kitschie hole in the wall near soccer locker. Ever since they moved food hasn't been the same but good enough for an occasional dinner at the "new" location (where it is now). HOWEVER we will not be returning after our last visit on 6/19/24. Prices went up (which is totally understandable with our crazy economy) but the quality has gone down significantly. The California roll was super sloppy and did not have cucumber. It was just a soggy mayo mess. The ahi tartar is now mostly filler (fried tempura batter pieces) mixed with rubbish old raw ahi. Thankfully that old fish didn't make us sick... however the old fish in my husband's teishoku did. Our daughter was the only one that ate that raw fish (salmon) and got food poisoning that left her tummy in a bad state for a few days. We called the restaurant and they did apologize but that is the extent of it. An apology. Again I understand that prices need to go up. But when restaurants start cutting back as well (keeping food too long and cutting back on staffing/training/prep time for opening service) it is just not worth it for customers. I saw a lot of people waiting outside to be seated so of course I was like I need to try this place We were the first party to arrive and the atmosphere was pleasant. Everyone was attentive and friendly. Sushi was good but I did expect it to be better hence we are in Hawaii. I don't know why I have this perception of everything seafood here is supposed to be A1 Negiri cut roll was decent but not as flavorful as I'm used to. With that being said, this is not a $$$$ high end wait-at-your-feet service restaurant. You go in, get seated, read through the very extensive menu, order, and wait as your food comes out when the kitchen completes it. My go to every time I come here is the grilled beef tongue (when they don't sell out) and their truffle hamachi - so yummy! That with a glass of beer that I never finish and make my BF finish for me. We always order way too much food but it's fun to just sit, relax, and be minimally bothered -- except when it's closing time. When it's time for last call and they start shutting, you can't linger here. That's that. This is not the type of place that'll let you come in late/ close to last call, and let you finish a round of food or drinks at your leisure. You're in THEIR establishment and yeah, it sucks to be rushed out, but no one likes closing later and being held up when their hours are posted. If the club can throw everyone out by 2:00 AM on the dot, then you can't be mad at the restaurants for doing the same thing when it's their closing time. Off the Beaten Path Japanese Izakaya, Must Try! This restaurant is location is small shopping center on the second floor. There is parking underneath the building and street parking. Reservations are recommended and you have to call them. No online reservations. We went for dinner. We wanted to experience some traditional izakaya and yakitori atmosphere versus only sushi. The menu is pretty expensive and if you don't know Japanese names of the plates and or their equivalent in English we would recommend doing some homework. We have ordered a lot of different small plates. Everything was as expected, and the food tasted fresh and delicious. Besides small plates we ordered one roll, Mauna Loa Roll, the mother of all rolls. It was $45 and it was HUGE. It had EVERYTHING on it and was very tasty. One recommendation, ask the chef to slice it into smaller slices, it would be easier to eat it. Other than that, it was great! The service was standard, and we enjoyed it. One of our favorite Japanese Restaurant to eat. This is our place we go for family birthdays. The menu is huge so hard to decide what to eat but we do have our favorites. You scan the QR Code and the menu comes out. Wē didnt have a reservation but was able to sit on the sushi bar (I recommend you make a reservation). This was the first time we sat at the bar. So neat, got to watch the staff at each station preparing the food. Our favorite was watching the sushi chef. He was very friendly and so fast. My husband ordered the Sashimi Moriawase Chew. Recommend making reservations though because we've been there a few times on different days and it's a hit and miss on how many people dine in. Their menu is extensive and overwhelming but I'm so happy with everything we ordered. We got the butterfish tempura with miso sauce! SO LIGHT with light crunch from the tempura!! The fried oysters (koki fry) was perfect as they use the smaller oysters which I prefer - perfect crunch and not overly cooked oysters! The ika yaki was SO GOOD - a squid pancake that was so light with chunks of squid. The nasu dengaku (baked eggplant) that was also on the miso sauce was AMAZING! Tender and flavorful. The two we LOVED was the fried ponzu salmon collars and the Sakekawa Tofu Salad which had crispy salmon skin, salmon bits over silky tofu and greens!! We definitely inhaled the salad! Wish we had enough space to try their stuffed portabella with sticky rice... guess that's to try for next time! Staff was nice and food came out rather quickly. Tokkuri-Tei has me on the fence between excellent and good. When I go there, it seems very Japan Japanese (as opposed to local Japanese) with some of their food like chawan mushi, but then comes with odd adaption of Japanese food like the spicy garlic roll. If I go to Gyotaku or a local Japanese place, I expect the adapted food. Somewhere where the staff is staff is speaking Japanese, I expect something closer to Japan. This sits in a weird place between a local place like Gyotaku and very Japanese place like Izakaya Torae Torae. We went pretty early cuz we eat at grandparent times now (aka 5:30pm). We really liked it because we were one of maybe 4 other groups that were in the restaurant. Everyone was social distancing and Tokkuri-Tei has barriers in place for the sushi bar as well as for tables. They also have QR code to access the HUGE menu. This was our first meal in Hawaii, and we were honestly disappointed. Nothing was bad, but nothing was really good either. I was most excited for their acclaimed tofu and salmon skin salad, but it was just okay. The salmon skin was tasty, but the rest of the salad never really came together for me. I think I was expecting a lighter, more ponzu-style dressing rather than a creamy one. The enoki maki was nice and smoky but was missing salt. The butterfish tempura was probably our favorite dish of the night because of the yummy miso sauce, but everything else about it was pretty standard for tempura. The ika yaki was greasy and heavy--def a dish to split between more than two people. Despite coming with bonito flakes and some kind of mayo-based sauce on top, it needed more seasoning (perhaps eel sauce would go well on this?). I ended up dipping it in the miso sauce because it needed something to make it taste not like bland greasy batter. My husband also got an ahi hand roll, which he said was fine. No better or worse than what we could get on the mainland. I think they would benefit from paring down the insanely long menu and focusing on making a smaller number of exceptional dishes. The service was really attentive and good. Both the guy at the front who seemed to be running the show and our tiny waitress were very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is casual and eclectic. Prices are reasonable. All of the above plus one beer came to about $53 before tax and tip. Overall, it was fine, but we wouldn't go back. Japanese cuisine in Kapahulu, Honolulu... I had never heard of this place before. Our friend, the birthday boy, chose Tokkuri-Tei to celebrate his belated birthday. Located on the second floor of the Hee Hing Plaza, at the end, next door to Tonkatsu Tamafuji, the decor is eclectic...like a whimsical memorabilia theme! Parking: free street parking after 6pm. I parked at First Hawaiian Bank on Kapahulu Avenue because it's free after 6pm. Service: great in the beginning. They patiently took our orders and returned when some of us couldn't decide. (The menu is extensive!) Our water glasses and tea cups were filled without our asking although we did have to ask for hot tea. We also asked for the complimentary Birthday Drink which came from a jar with a snake in it! At the end, we had to flag our server down for the bill. Food: I had the agedashi tofu and tempura udon. Both were satisfying comfort food! They were delicious and beautiful! I also had a fresh mochi which was soft and yummy! Overall, this was a great choice for our group. The food is sooo good. We got the stuffed portobello mushroom. It's stuffed with sticky fried rice. This is a must try!! We also got the ginger pork and a tempura plate. Both entries came with miso soup and salad. The miso soup is delicious and has wakame and little tofu cubes. The pork ginger was nice and flavorful. I am biased but the best part of the whole meal was the tempura. I love love love me some tempura. It is served fresh and piping hot. It is lightly battered and cooked at the right temperature (leaving it not oily ). There's shrimp, carrots, eggplant, green beans and some other veggies that I couldn't identify but tasted great. I also ordered some hot tea, which was extremely hot - just be careful. Parking on the street isn't too bad. There were stalls available. However we did wait a little longer than expected to be seated and to pay the bill at the end too. You'll probably have to run down and add money to the meter. Originally you can pay up to an hour. But but but if you go in the even you can park at the bank parking just around 25 feet away if going ocean bound. It's on the same side of the street and you can pay for your parking using an app and add time remotely from your phone so you don't have to disrupt your meal. read more

We came for our friend's birthday on a Saturday evening. His wife arranged for us all to sit at the bar, to make sure that there was room for the car seat of their new bundle of joy. The guys both got the Chef Omakase and LOVED their experience. Us women-folk got rolls and soba. The only downside of the meal was that the junior chef dude, dubbed the Angry One, making our rolls mixed my veggie rolls with her fish ones. To be clear I told the waiter ahead of time that they were dealing with allergies. When the rolls came out, I right away let the server know there was a mistake. The chef serving the guys empathized with us as the other head chef guy was vegan. The junior chef who had to remake the order - didn't remake it (I watched him having a fit as he re-plated) and spent 15 minutes slamming ingredients and cursing "under his breath". Luckily the main chef was super understanding and joked about it; so happy we were seated AWAY from the Angry One. The soba luckily was super filling and the other half polished off my rolls put of fear I might eat tainted veggie rolls. When we come back, I'll stick to soba, unless someone else is on maki making duty for the night. Everyone else fully enjoyed themselves including our friend's wife, who was struggling to feed a newborn and herself, lol! Sadly no pre or mid eating pictures this time around, everyone was too busy catching up and shoveling food in our mouths - the angry one was also VERY distracting! I almost forgot! This place is a must! Located in Kapahulu right next to Tonkatsu Tamafuji. There is parking under the building but if it's full there's plenty street parking available. I would advise to make reservation if you don't want to wait. But we came here on a Friday at around 7:30ish and got seated at 8. I would say customer service is good they are very busy but the food comes out pretty quick and they refill your water often. We got the maguro and hamachi sashimi. I swear it was sooo buttery and soft. The yaki-tori and pork enoki skewers were ono we had to order to take home. I love their rolls. The baked Alaska roll was my favorite as it was really flavorful. I really enjoyed the crunch factor from the garlic ahi roll. And the spicy ahi uramaki was also really good but just plain compared to the other rolls. Another incredible experience here. Tonight our appetite was bigger than our stomach. First of, I like the way all the servers work together as a team. It seems like no one has a section because we had a different waiter/waitress with every food item that was served. We started with the Salmon Skin Tofu Salad $10.50. Which is an incredible way to kick off dinner. So good and tasty. Skewers, Wabi-Sabi $4.50 and Enoki Mushroom & Pork $5.00. Both were deliciously good. Caterpillar Roll $18.00 unagi, avocado, cucumber, maguro another tasty treat. Nigiri-Ikura$10.00 so fresh! Teishoku Hyotan-sashimi, ebi-tempura and stick Jidori brand yaki tori $24.95. Everything made to perfection it included dessert green tea mochi with azuki beans, so soft and fresh. As busy as it was, the service was excellent and our dinner order was served pretty fast. After being turned away at tonkatsu tamafuji and honolulu skewers, I'm so glad we ended up here. A hidden gem with an unassuming portico, this spot serves generous nigiri and delicious yakitori to boot. We arrived early on a Sunday and we're promptly sat at the sushi bar, which honestly was great. We got to watch a masterful team of chef's and assistants hard at work preparing our food and it honestly made us appreciate it that much more. Also the view through the kitchen of diamond head doesn't hurt either. The skewers were great, pork and enoki was my personal fave, but the true standout was the nigiri, which featured incredibly generous cuts of high quality fish that melt in your mouth. The prices were generally reasonable given the quality; we loved the local vibes and supporting a long standing locally owned restaurant and hope to come again to get more of that nigiri. Updating my review!!! This is STILL one of my favorite izakaya places to eat at!! Parking in the building is $2, there are metered stalls on both sides of Kapahulu that are free after 6:30 pm, you can also park in the First Hawaiian Bank lot after 6 (not quite sure if it is 6...might be 6:30) but must pay - don't forget to pay. I recommend making a reservation even if it is just 2 of you. Especially now that tables have been removed to ensure social distancing. They have placed menus on the windows and movable screen partitions to make it easier for you to see, and also provide a QR code if you prefer looking at the menu on your phone. If you are early for your reservation or just walk in, you may be asked to wait outside while they ready a table for you. The workers here are very aware of social distancing and want to ensure that the front area is clear for the workers to move around. My favorite dishes are STILL the tanuki udon, tanshio and sabi yaki. I have added to that list...Salmon skin salad - SO YUMMO - the salmon skin is crisp and broken into very nice pieces, and the tofu is a perfect complement. A grilled musubi is perfect for the times I decide to not have an udon. I enjoy the flakiness and taste of their tempura as well. There were some tables available and they were going to seat us until we said "only here for some drinks". They then proceeded to kick me and my party out. Tables are more spaced out for distancing. The Sakekawa Tofu Salad balances crunchy salmon skin with soft tofu. This makes a great combination of textures to start your sushi dinner. The menu is extremely large so there's lots of options. However, it can be a little overwhelming. I had a soba with tempura which was okay but didn't have enough tsuyu. I apologize for my scant review, but I am speechless about this restaurant. I am speechless every time I look at the menu because it is that vast and eclectic. I spend at least ten minutes to order, and I make sure to order something new each time. I will just let the photos speak for themselves. I've had toro (fatty tuna), abalone, and sea urchin. All were fresh and delicious. The chef's special yaki udon dish is on fire, too! If the opportunity is right when seated at the bar, the chef may hook you up with some of his specials! I will say that Tokkuri-Tei would be one of my top recommended sushi restaurants that's moderately priced, that's if you want something more casual than an omakase, but still more special than fresh sushi, deli style (think Honolulu Sushi). I've taken visiting family here for a birthday dinner, and everyone enjoyed it. I have more family visiting in the near future, and I will definitely take them here. It's been about 7 years since I came here last which was actually at their old location but I came here because some friends wanted to grab a late night dinner. I had just come from a meeting so I had eaten something before and wanted to just order something small. I forgot how extensive their menu is here. I was looking at getting some kind of roll with salmon but nothing seemed to sound good so I decided to get the ikura ochazuke. My fiancé got the assorted tempura and cold soba. When the food came I was surprised at how much food there was. The ikura ochazuke was delicious. It had just enough saltiness. I got to try some of the assorted tempura which was pretty good as well. The assorted tempura was huge! Service was good for the most part. Parking can be hard but since it was so late the parking under the building was free. read more

First time here.... came for uni, mirugai, grilled squid, and they're out/don't bring it in. I was surprised to see this place was empty on a Sunday night? Ummmm it might be cuz they're not ordering the good stuffs! Also.... they put they're menu on Japanese shoji doors? We can't even read it! I go to use the restroom? The paddle attached to the bathroom key is sticky and disgusting! Most of the food they did have was ok besides their hamachi truffle thing, it tasted nasty(rotten) 3 of us tried 1pc each and all agreed it tasted bad. Would I return? NO! I wouldn't..... sorry it wasn't our waiters fault but just poor management. There's lots of competition now days. Sad to say but a place like this won't last long. read more

So I ended up making a reservation for me and my bf on 12.26.2020. The lady on the phone was nice and told me they have room for us. We got there 10 minutes before our reservation and they sat us right away. I was surprised how busy it was, there were people on every table (social distancing enforced). I liked how they used plastic coverings where we were sitting by the net. It was an interesting restaurant. The server brought this tall board with the menu on it, from top to bottom. The drink menu was on a separate board. You could also view the menu on their website. We ended up getting agedashi mochi, ahi katsu, vegan chicken, otoro sashimi, yakitori, vegetarian teishoku, and seafood risotto. I also ordered the vegan corned beef hash, but they didn't have. That's the dish I really wanted to try. The vegan chicken really tasted like chicken. Even the texture of it was chicken-like. Everything was really good and tasty. We ended the din din with green tea ice cream. The service was pretty good, considering they were pretty busy. I am really happy that we tried this restaurant. First time coming here, and the food did not disappoint. Since it was our first time and there were so many things on the menu, we went with the teishoku to try a little bit of everything. The sashimi was so fresh and the tempura was so crispy and good. We were stuffed and thoroughly enjoyed our meals.
