We have been to our share of Chinese takeout places in the area and Tokoharu is by far the best. Yes, I know it is more then a Chinese takeout since they have Japanese fare and sushi on the menu. We have been there 4 or 5 times in the last 2 months and the food is always amazing. It tastes fresh and the portions are large! We have yet to have a bad meal there. I think what I like best about this place is that they genuinely appreciate your business. I live not a quarter mile from a place called happy wok and their food is ok, definitely convenient to me. Yet you go there and the owner really doesn't seem to care at all. She never smiles and has all she can do to say thank you when you leave. And if they forget something when you call and tell them she basically accuses you of lying. So, I will take the 15 minute drive to Tokoharu from now on. read more

I have been going to Tokoharu for years but yesterday will be my last. I walked in. No one there to greet or take an order. The chef is behind the counter and doesn't even look up or acknowledge that I am there. Finally, I ask him if someone can help me. I place my order, over $50, and get home to find My spicey salmon HAND roll is now a 6 piece roll. The worst part and I wish I took a picture of it was the sushi. The salmon looked like it had been shaved off (think of lox on a bagel) and I could see thru it. It was all rice, which fell apart as soon as I tried to dip it in soy sauce (Oh that had a nasty smell to it) I think the salad was the only edible part and that was basically lettuce so how can you mess that up. I think something changed about this place in a few last years. I ate there tonight with my daughter. Unfortunately the maki combo I got was disappointing. Bland and not as tasty as in the past. I made the mistake of ordering 5 basic items for pick up. They said "ready in 30 mins", not the usual 20, so I gave them 35 mins. When I arrived, it was total chaos -10/12 people waiting for their orders! The help kept running back and forth to the kitchen, coming back later with a small order. Then they asked me for the 3rd time, what I had ordered. Total confusion - waited 40 mins after arrival - and, the best part - they left out the chicken chow mein - the main dish. Also, ate there for table service a few months ago and the server was an extra from Walking Dead - served us plastic silverware and we had to direct her every move thru the meal. Laughed our way thru the meal and still laugh today as the funniest service we have ever had (we are all retired). Left her 20% anyway for trying, hope she learns her job eventually. Stopped here for takeout food on my way upstate. Many of the specialty rolls were well priced, such as the spicy white tuna roll or the sweet potato tempura roll at $5 each. The negamaki was decent (very heavy on the scallions). The gyoza, while slightly burnt and apparently made a while ago, was very good. Medium sized order took just a few minutes to arrive. We ordered about $50 worth of food from Tokoharu on 04/11/2021. After ordering, we were given a generic pick-up time of twenty minutes. We drove down to the restaurant to get our food. When I walked in to pick up our order I was told by the cashier that he needed a few more minutes. No problem. I went and sat in the car. After about five minutes, a massive line started forming out the door. My guess is the kitchen got backed up because my generic twenty minutes turned into almost a full hour as other customers began arriving and forced to wait (like myself). After I was finally called for our food, I grabbed the bags and drove home. On the way home, an unsealed cup of soy sauce broke open and started leaking all over the bottom of the bag. When we arrived home, we discovered that both bags of food were actually leaking. The sauces got all over our carpet. By the time we sat down to eat our food was completely cold. Not to keep piling on negative comments, but nothing tasted right either. Even after a microwave heating or two, our hot entrees were plain and unsatisfying. Our sushi orders needed to be tossed in the garbage because my partner and I soon became sick over something we had eaten. Our guess was the sushi, for it tasted the worst of all our items. Overall, a largely dissatisfying experience and a waste of almost $50. read more

7/4/18 update: They were one of the few places open on the 4th of July so we drove up hoping for the good sushi we'd had in the past. I was disappointed. Maybe it was a bad day or maybe it's not what it used to be. Sushi didn't taste fresh, rangoons we're over cooked. I took a taste of everything and stopped eating. I hope this isn't the norm now because they used to be excellent. I pointed out that the avocado in one of the rolls was definitely not fresh (looked black) and she agreed and apologized but didn't take it off the bill when the check came. Not a big deal but it would have been a nice gesture. I definitely won't eat here again. Sushi is one of my favorite things to eat but I know how important it is to be sure it's fresh. read more

Please train kitchen staff. The burnt pieces of chicken at the bottom of the fry basket should be thrown out not served to the customer. Lo mein noodles and rice need to be cooked until they are soft. Vegetables are not decoration they are part of the meal. I will not order again. read more

After having been disappointed with multiple Chinese food restaurants our expectations were not high about a combined Chinese/Japanese restaurant but we were pleasantly surprised about how wrong we were. I had lunch here with a friend a few weeks ago. What's odd is that there is a menu posted in the front window - which I read extensively while waiting for my friend to meet me - because I wanted to see ahead of time if I could try and figure out what kind of special roll I wanted to order. Then, when my friend and I entered, we noticed the "specials" posted on dry-erase board. I've never seen so many specials posted before. There were literally 3 boards on display listing all of their "special" rolls (makes you wonder how special they really are!). Then, printed on the actual menu are several of the "special" rolls (which proves they're not special"), only some of the ones off the menu in the window, and then some additional ones that were not on the window menu, or the "specials" boards! So weird! Too many discrepancies and I've never seen it done like this any place else that i've ever dined! Anyway, I ordered a Kani salad and I do like adding sliced mango to that dish, so I asked and they accommodated me, but charges me an extra dollar for a few slivers of mango- whatever. The staff was VERY nice, but there were 2 young kids (family members of the establishment) hanging around in the back. They probably hang out here all summer, not really a big deal, but kind of a distraction. The rolls and Kani salad were VERY good. My friend and I really enjoyed them. The prices were reasonable. The ambiance and layout/design is really lacking. However, I would definitely meet my friend here again for lunch, but I would not want to come for a nice dinner out. read more

Got the 3 roll lunch special for 10 bucks - great price but you are definitely getting what you paid for - the spicy tuna literally tasted like tuna salad with lots of mayo. The eel roll has barely any eel and was pretty much filled with just lots of cucumber drowning in eel sauce. I was pretty disappointed in the hot sake also - it was so harsh tasting. You would think you were drinking vodka but without any buzz at the end... the waiter on the other hand was very polite and thankful every time I said things were fine and he provided good service so he got a good tip, but the food and drinks - yuck. read more

This is my second visit here. I barely remember the first visit but I know that each time I ordered some sushi as an appetizer and a Chinese dish for my main course. Both times the sushi was very good while the Chinese entree was disappointing. This time it was "hot crispy beef." The beef was crispy fried and the texture was not bad, but it was doused in a sickeningly sweet sauce with absolutely no spice. After adding a lot of soy sauce and Sriracha to offset the sweeter-than-candy taste it was somewhat palatable but made me queasy. I took the leftovers home but I think I'm going to throw them away. If this restaurant were closer to my hotel or to work I would consider coming here a few more times and either sticking to sushi or trying to figure out what Chinese dishes were actually worth eating, but it's not so I won't be back. Oh, and I ordered a diet Coke... came in a 10 or possibly 12 ounce glass that was 80% ice. When I drained the Coke I asked for a refill and he said "you want another one? Which meant exactly what I suspected it was going to mean -- he charged me for a second diet Coke even though he refilled the same glass. Sure, it was only $1 for each refill. But come on, that's just low class. Little greedy details like charging for a refill, or only putting one soy sauce packet in a "to go" order (not that I've seen that happen here, but that's the attitude I see at some restaurants) only serves to piss people off. You will reap at least 10x the grief that you save in nickels and dimes charging people for extra condiments or refilling their drink, when you didn't even give them a proper drink in the first place. read more

Did another night of take-out recently when cooking seemed like the most tedious activity on earth. Thank goodness for Tokoharu. We mixed it up with both Japanese & Cantonese options. Age tofu + house salads with Ginger dressing for appetizers. Sweet potato, California, and Spicy tuna rolls for the sushi lovers in the house. And brown rice & sesame chicken for the chinese-food lovers. The prices are reasonable, the servings are more than enough, and the service, as always, was excellent. Recommended for sure. read more

So, where to go for good chinese food in the Poughkeepsie area...Why a Japanese restaurant of course. Actually most of the Japanese places up here are owned by Chinese or Koreans. Hence the multiple personalities a lot of them have. Tokoharu, though, is a little different. Yes they may have chinese items on their menu, but they also have that ever illusive "Special Chinese Menu" in which eveything is in Chinese and there is not an english translation. AH-HA, some of you are saying to yourselves. "I knew chinese restaurants had a secret menu, but have never been able to prove it because they won't give it to me unless I ask for it in Chinese." Well, this is one place that has just such a menu. On it you will find Fish Head Soup, sauteed chinese vegetables, special shrimp dishes and a plethora of other things. All cooked with a more authentic flavor than you would find at the usual take-out places. Now I know this is a tease for many of you since you will probably never see the menu, and quite honestly would probably not understand it if you did. But to tell you the truth I can't read it either. I have to bring someone in to help read off the items to me. I am, however, attempting to smuggle a copy of it out and have it translated to english with the help of some co-workers. If the mission succeds, I will see if I can post the english translations. There is also an unsubstantiated rumor that if you bring in certain ingredients that are not on their menu, i.e. Whole Lobster, they will cook it up for you in a cantonese style. I won't lie, I haven't tried Izumi or any of the other sushi places. I'm fairly new in town, but that doesn't mean I haven't tried my fair share of sushi. For what my coworker and I ordered, it was pretty darn good. We ordered the sushi deluxe combo our first time here and the sushi and sashimi combo when we went out for my birthday. Given that it was the deluxe combo, therefore, it was the chef's choice of sushi, the fish was really fresh and soo good!!! I loved the miso soup and the asian salad that they brought out to us to start. To top it off, we drank a good amount of sake which wasn't that bad either. We really drank and ate ourselves happy those times. Great service!!! Really friendly!!! No problems!!! (Given there were only like 5-6 people total max when we went for the dinners, I don't see why good service could not be obtainable. It did seem however that they were always busy making sushi for delivery or take-out, as there were always bags of food being packed in front of the sushi bar lots of times) Price was okay. I think it was about 18 for the sushi deluxe and like about 6 bucks for each large caraffe of sake. I'd definitely come back here again. Check it out, give it a shot (literally). Located in a shopping center with ample parking space, this combination Chinese/Japanese restaurant looked like a safe bet for the varying tastes within my group. Being a Sunday, it was quite empty, with my group mostly being the only customers there at the time. We were seated in quick order, and received our ordered appetizers in good time. (5-10 minutes) Our entrees took a long time; about 45 minutes. Having both a kitchen cook, and sushi chef staffed, what was taking 45 minutes to prepare 7 adult orders? I've heard that during weekdays the place gets tons of customers and can take care of them in quick succession. I ordered the Fried Oysters as my appetizer and Chirashi as my entree: The Fried Oysters were the smallest I've ever had, however usually when ordering they come as a pair. This one comes as four, so that makes up the difference. The down side of the Fried Oysters is that it's actually heavily breaded instead of battered, and the oyster itself seems to have been minced rather than fried is a whole oyster. So it tasted similar to a chicken nugget with a bit of seafood taste. Still okay to eat, but not as delicious as what I expect Fried Oysters to be. Along with the entree I ordered, it comes with complementary Japanese styled salad and miso soup. Nothing special, nothing terrible. It is what it is normally at any other place. The Chirashi by tradition is made of the non-prime parts of the fish, and this version is exactly what it was suppose to be. There were slices toward the tail end. The freshness is A-okay. The types of fish included were, Smoked Salmon, Red Snapper, White Tuna (Escobar), Tuna (Toro), and Imitation Crab. The sushi rice was a bit too firm, but still tasted well. It's a decent Chirashi and a decent size. My wife and a friend both had the Sake with rice. Both said it was good too. Most everyone else had various Chinese dishes. They were extremely generous in size. So large that each order could probably feed 2-3 adults. The decor is okay. It is themed with bamboo hip level room partitions, which are kind of flimsy, so do not lean on them. The ambient music was a set list of 80's/early 90's mix of romantic sappiness set on a 45 minute loop. Though I have not gone into the bathrooms, my friends were seen waiting for their turn, meaning one person per bathroom. I also heard that they are very reminisce of Chinatown hole in the wall bathrooms, and not even having proper toilet flushing handles, and substituted with a metal round stick. Also heard the lady's sink had a slow drain and started backing up. It was said to be nasty and not matching the rest of the decor of the restaurant. The service aside from being slow it was customer oriented. They welcomed us and also thanked us for coming. The orders were taken correctly, and the waitress did come back to check on us. With the cons being the extremely slow service we received, and the super cruddy restrooms, there were also the pros of huge variety (including Sapporo beer), A-okay freshness of fish, and huge portions of the Chinese orders.
