One of my favorite markets because of the selection and food offerings! Parking is easy in the lot. They have indoor and outdoor seating if you chose to grab something to eat. Staff are kind and the store is super clean. My favorite part of the store is the hot food bar where they have karaage and tempura by the pound. They also have freshly made sushi and other packaged meals (and they provide a microwave!). To the side, there's a few food stalls like Gindaco for takoyaki and a bakery. The grocery section is quite expansive (one of the biggest Japanese markets I've been to in the area) and I've stocked up on some hard to find goods. I had a bad experience at Kagura restaurant yesterday. I always ordered katsudon and this time it came with raw egg white almost half of them and the tonkatsu was not warm at all. I brought it to the counter to show him and told the guy, he kind of just said oKay that 's it. he seems like dosen't even care at all. I felt offensive. read more

Although this location is out of the way for me, I would definitely come back as this place is huge and offer a large amount of items for sale throughout their store. There is a huge variety of Japanese goodies here including stuff you would see in Japan. Meats, seafood, snacks, cosmetics, household items, etc. They also have items I haven't been able to find in my local Japanese markets and closer Tokyo Central location. Great variety of ready to eat foods as well including a hot bar selection and sweets. The price is also not as expensive as one may think. One thing I don't like about this place is its parking, so if you go when it's busy, you may just be circling around this giant market for awhile before you find parking. read more

This specific location has to be my favorite Japanese market! It's huge with two stories and carries everything you could possibly need from groceries to homeware to cosmetics to plushies and mystery boxes! I feel very nostalgic whenever I visit. It reminds me a lot of a Japanese market I used to frequent as a child. The decor is very cute with lots of vines and adorable signs. I absolutely love their selection of Japanese products. They have every single candy that other markets have begun to phase out (This is one of the few places that still sell Apollo Strawberry Chocolate Candy nearby!) and feature a bunch of goodies from local businesses (like mochi from Fugetsu-Do). They also have amazingly perfect (and crazy expensive) fruit from Japan. I always find myself moseying around their dinnerware section. A lot of beautiful clay pieces. Their cosmetics game is also top tier! They carry all the core brands. Can always count on them when I'm looking to restock. read more

This is my 2nd time here - TWO times in 1 week so that definitely speaks volumes to how much I am LOVIN' this store! ALSO... Um, how come I didn't know about this place SOONER?! They have so many great finds that you DEFINITELY do not see in your local grocery stores! They have organic and fresh produce. They even have different kitchen appliances, bathroom toiletries, workout equipment, etc. FIRST VISIT purchased: organic matcha tea - loved it! Several food stalls and a full service sushi place in the second floor. Worth the visit for people who like Japanese nick knack and food. Nice place to grab lunch or dinner before and after shopping. I take my mother to Japanese markets occasionally and Tokyo Central is probably the largest one that we go to. I am impressed by the size and the variety of Japanese items you can purchase at Tokyo Central. The other Japanese markets do the same but man, this place is pretty huge! We used to come when it was Marukai so our history at this location goes back pretty far. There isn't too many Japanese markets around so having a one stop shop is essential for your Japanese food or knick knack needs. Parking: decent sized private lot VERDICT: Rinse and repeat read more

Their prices are steeper than other Asian markets but Tokyo Central offers a vast selection of treats. On the other hand, be cautious of the hot food. It's a bit overwhelming walking into this place. There are a few food stalls to the right selling takoyaki, tonkatsu, tempura, and sweets. The bento boxes get discounted 20% after 7pm. The food court pretty much closes around 7pm. This is a nice place to grab Japanese groceries, snacks, or a meal. read more

With many Korean groceries nearby, and the proximity to Little Tokyo, for me this grocery was not super exotic the way the other reviewers made it sound. It is not like a Japanese Costco since we made a roundabout around the store somewhat faster than anticipated. Prices were fair on eggs, fish, meats, and hot food bar, as well as sushi. On the hot food bar, food was akin to Panda Express quality (we got noodles, teriyaki chicken, green beans, potato croquette). 3/12/22 Came in today just to check things out. I'm on a poke/sushi/sashimi kick and wanted to see what items are available to add to my creative pursuits. OH EM GEE....I wish I had more time to walk around the aisles to see everything. I feel like a kid in a candy store. I haven't been to this store in years. The last time I came here it was a Marukai. I focused mainly on checking out their seafood department. It was nearly closing time when I arrived and most of the stuff were sold out (sushi packs etc) But there's still plenty of fish to choose from. There were aisles upon aisles of items that I couldn't read (it's in Japanese) but have the English translation next to the prices. There's plenty of sauces I've never ever heard of but there's a dozen or so varieties on soy sauce alone. I love this place for having a ton of options. You'll never run out of ideas on meals here! If this place was within a 5 mile radius or less from my home, I'd be here at least twice a week. There was hardly any staff/employee interaction when I visited except for the cashier who rang up my loot, she was nice. There's a second floor to this store that sold clothes & other knock knacks. I was amused by the myriad of Japanese snacks almost of every aisle end and several bins. Of course there's the usual Pocky sticks at the entrance. The self check outs were closed but there were several of them in rows up front. I like how things are set up at the department in the back where the meat and seafood are, it looks plentiful yet neat & organized. The products are arranged beautifully for customers to see and be impressed how they're prepared & packaged. My go to Japanese supermarket even when they were still called Marukai Market. Things to add to cart: natto, japanese whiskey, sochu, plum wine, meats for sukiyaki and shabu shabu, green tea, barley tea, soy sauce, wasabi, Naturie Hatomugi Skin Conditioner, soba, udon, rice vinegar, kewpie and sake. You can't beat the price. They even have some Don Quijote products available. Osaka and Nijiya have barely any deals while Mitsuwa is only okay for their festival deals but the crowds prevents me from going out of my way to shop there. Suruki market is great for their discounted bentos but you have to elbow your way against other Asian aunties. No thanks. read more

I saw someone stand to assist with bagging but she was stand there and chatting with a cashier instead of helping the customer for bagging. I feel rushed to bag my own groceries since people behind me waiting. When the cashier was done scanning the items i have to stop bagging and make a payment. While I m paying, the cashier was standing there (no help) to bag the groceries. After finish paying I have to finish bagging on my own. Tokyo Central is a Japanese supermarket integrated with a mini food court and it was launched by Marukai Corporation. This is one of five (as of August 2022) Tokyo Central locations and personally this location is perhaps one of the best and biggest Japanese supermarkets you will find in SoCal. The supermarket has two floors (trust me there aren't many Japanese supermarket with two floors) and it is combining Daiso, Mitsuwa, and Tokyo Japanese Lifestyle into one. [Food court - near entrance]: I wouldn't say this is one of the best food courts within Japanese supermarkets, but there's a semi open-air outdoor patio area. Vendors include Croissants Du Tokyo (Japanese/French pastries), Tenkatori (kaarage), Gindaco (takoyaki), Kagura (tonkatsu set meals). [1st floor]: First thing you'll see upon entering the supermarket is a HUGE (if not one of the biggest) selection on Japanese take-out food from sushi, bento boxes, Italian sandwiches from Giuliano's. sando, curry, etc. Mitsuwa and Seiwa in Torrance don't have this many take-out food options. In addition, there are kitchenware, Pokémon Nanoblock, snacks, fruits/vegetables, plushies, etc. [2nd floor]: There's actually an elevator to take your shopping cart to the 2nd floor. You will find sports attires, colorful socks that shape like Japanese beverages, pillows, luggage, badminton, anime outfits for kids, etc. [Food]: I got a poke bowl and the sign says it is one of the most popular take out options - not cheap but it was pretty solid. Unfortunately this Tokyo Central location is a bit out of my way, but I wouldn't hesitate to grab take-out food if I do drive by the city of Gardena. Just absolutely amazing. You can find all sorts of things for the home, some toys and Knick knacks, to cooked food section, so many snacks. Service is friendly and also has self checkouts. My first review of 2022 will be on the Japanese New Years decorations and food here, since many have already written great reviews on this Tokyo Central location. Happy year of the Tiger! Let's channel its strength and courage to get us through an uncertain year ahead! I was shocked to see how expensive the New Years decorations were: from a "Kadomatsu," pieces of bamboo with decorative fans for $39.99 to a "Kumade," a hand-held decorative ornament priced at $85.99! I imagine these ornaments must have been handcrafted to be sold at these prices. The $4.99 ceramic tiger sufficed for me! Japanese New Years food, "osechi," is not quite as expensive, but definitely pricey as well! A small box/bento set starts around $20-30. A half cup of black beans were nearly $9! I think prices vary based on brand and origin. Kamaboko - Fish cake with pink coloring lining a semi-cylindrical white, chewy, processed fish. The shape and color represents the first rising Sun of the new year. Kuromame - sweet, black soy beans symbolizes good health, hard work and long life. Kobumaki - salty, rolled seaweed. It sounds similar to the word "yorokobu," which means happiness. Datemaki - sweet, rolled egg omelet is associated with learning and scholarship due to its scroll-like shape. Kurikinton - mashed chestnut. "Kinton" means silver and gold treasures, thus representing economic fortune for the new year. There's more, but these are some common ones with meaning and they were readily made and packaged for purchase in a set or individually. Another fun fact is that osechi tends to be either sweet, salty or pickled because businesses were closed during the week of New Years, so the food had its own preservatives to last families days, even weeks. Coming to Tokyo Central is like a day at a shopping plaza in itself. It has food but also cosmetics from Japan! I remember the days when you could still walk upstairs and shop all the lifestyle items ie: slippers, home goods, apparel, etc... Now it's transformed into a conveyor belt styled sushi that is KILLING the parking during lunch and dinner hours. That said, I still can't hate on one of the best grocery shops in South Bay. Talk about a Japanese supermarket which has EVERYTHING. The prices are incredibly competitive and honestly I'd rate this supermarket higher than Mitsuwa and Nijiya. It's owned by Marukai, which is kind of the budget Japanese supermarket. But what they did with Tokyo Central was they provide Mitsuwa/Nijiya quality wares but at lower prices. First time ever! Sooooo many people, making my POTS aggravated. (Sucks to be me) as a San Diegan I still think Mitsuwa is better (that's just me). But their Hawaiian aisle was worth it. Tried looking up if they larger packs of tobiko like that one I saw at a Japanese festival back Viejas (it's in Temecula) but they only had a small sizes and options to chose from. At least I can finally say I've been. The place could be wider, and I wish there was some sort of air movement because you can see those deep freezer open and it's all smoky from being stuffy and everyone was so sweaty ha ha ha read more
