Fast forward to finding Tokyo Fish Market and I want to give it a go again. First, there is next to zero parking here. You would be best to plan on parking somewhere else and then walking over. Once inside, I feel like I have been transported into a mom and pop Japanese store. There are a variety of thing Japanese, from packaged, frozen, and fresh foods. They have a produce section with a limited selection of items. Along the back wall is where the magic happens. The fish selection can be overwhelming, but that is a good thing. From whole fish to filets, sushi grade to grill, there is something to fit the need. I purchased Butterfish, octopus, fresh local squid, and 4 different oysters (not for the ceviche). My first time shopping at TFM, on Wednesday morning at 10am. I drove from SF to buy sashimi and swordfish for my husband's 60th day. I didn't know you have to call at least a day ahead if you would like them to cut more than 1 lb. of sashimi. One person behind the counter directed me to the precut blocks of fish to the left of the counter. But special shoutout to J.J. for helping me slice my 1.75 lb. order! I've shopped at this market for at least 26 years. The owner is always around, friendly, with a very friendly staff. The shop is small, but cozy, in a mom and pop corner store, kind of way. The fish selection is expansive and you'll find all things Japanese here with take away prepared foods and sushi bento boxes. You can find bottled items like soy sauces and sesame oils, panko bread crumbs, tofu, kimchi, sake and nori wrappers for sushi making. I've never seen so many brands/kinds of rice. I enjoy that the produce section is small and always fresh and they sell Japanese produce you might have a hard time finding elsewhere. Once I needed some fresh peas and none were on the shelf. I asked an employee if they had any more and he actually went in the back and as I waited, he shelled some for me. Talk about fresh! Lots of frozen products like gyoza, easy to prepare rice bowl stuff, noodles of many kinds and a FEW regular grocery store items like butter and eggs. Yes, it can be a tight squeeze, with even only a few carts, but you can work your way and maneuver around....it's called shopping. read more

Visited today. This was the first time I had been since the shelter in place started. There was quite a line at 1:30 on a Saturday which took me about 1 hour and 10 minutes to go through. They had no more than 15 people at a time in the store, which made me feel better about being there. The staff would clean the cart as a shopper dropped it off at exiting as well as clean the baskets. Nicely done! Worth the wait. You have to get there early to get the special fish so I didn't expect to find anything like that but I was pleased they were packed with the standards. Thank you Yelpers for helping me discover the best fish market for sashimi grade fish and Wagyu. Took a drive there because we were in mood for Toro and it was on route home. It's a small market but quite packed with customers. The seafood and meat counter were full of flash frozen sashimi grade fish and beef (extreme low temp flash freezing is what kills all the bacteria in sashimi and makes it acceptable for raw consumption). Preassembled thawed and precut sashimi and sushi rolls were also available in frozen sector. They also had fresh uni and variety of fresh oysters. Everything you need for DIY sushi is available for purchase at fraction of price of restaurants. We ended up purchasing what we thought was way too much - oysters, uni, A5 Waygu, O'toro. However we finished all the food purchased the next day and ended up driving up there 2 days later for more Toro and Uni. Great service and selection- it is now my go to fish market (even though it is a good 1.5 hours round trip). read more

I am puro Japanese American from California. And I have been less than impressed with the restaurant sashimi and sushi choices in the East Bay. So this grocery store is the best alternative, and of course, does not cost as much as going out. Don't let the young people fool you, most of them behind the fish counter know how to cut and clean up the fish super well if you using it for sashimi. We often get the uni as well. As for other Japanese groceries, it's got a fine selection. Sometimes I prefer Yaoya-San in El Cerrito because the parking there is easier and normally there's less people. Here's when not to come here for fish, Christmas or New Year's Eve-- it is mad mad crowded! If you don't mind waiting to get a number to then get served, then fine. The variety of items they have on hand is remarkable for such a small space, but they manage to have fresh fish, Japanese kobe beef, different sushi and onigiri (Japanese rice balls), arare (Japanese rice crackers), Japanese beverages (from Japan), and Japanese sweets. All kinds of seafood, all very fresh. I'd go here daily if I lived nearby. Super busy on weekends so if you need something from the fish counter, just grab a number ticket and please be patient. They have parking spots at the adjacent Dollar Tree lot so parking is easy. For quicker in and out, they have blocks of fish, sliced and unsliced. Grabbing the blocks of so many different types of fish and shellfish for sushi easily adds up, plus yummy Japanese and Hawaiian snacks can be a shocker at check-out, but then you prepare the feast and realize how incredibly economical it is compared to restaurant prices for multiple people, and with superior quality. All you need is a sharp knife at home to slice through these quality blocks of deliciousness. Total cost of fish plate (10") without uni and ikura is $46.20 and can easily feed 4-6 people. Uni is pricey at $45/half-tray (Santa Barbara; they also have Japanese import), but only half of that (so, quarter tray) is on the 12" plate and is enough to make multiple orders of uni sushi, and each piece is super delicious. I also save lots of money by learning how to shuck oysters off of YouTube so that I can try 2 or 3 pieces of each of the many different types of oysters they have and not buy a dozen of one type like in restaurants. read more

This place is so awesome. I had never gone here before even though I have been hanging around Cal for a long time. They have a wide variety of sashimi grade fish at prices lower (like -$2/lb) than Ranch99 and many of the korean super markets. My group and I really wanted to make our own poke for a Super (poke) Bowl party so we bought 1.5lb salmon 1.5lb tuna 0.5lb hamachi Octopus It came out really good. The salmon was so fatty I was drooling while preparing the poke and had to resist the temptation to try some. Aside from fish they have many other food items to make Japanese dishes, but they are obviously primarily a fish market. There is a also a tiny side shop in the middle of the parking lot where you can buy knives/utensils/and other dishware for your Japanese meal. Parking is really tiny like 20 slots at most. This is the stuff. Everything you need to prepare your very own omakase experience that could have cost you well over $300 with sake pairing for 2 for less than $50. They got the hard to find stuff like live Uni, fresh natto and Sapporo black, as well as your everyday bento boxes and onigiri. When I'm craving fresh seafood, I stop in here, pick up a variety of raw seafood (amaebi, ika, Uni, scallop, etc), a bottle of sake, and prepare sushi rice to make myself a chirashi bowl. My parents would go to the market everyday and buy fish or shellfish that were just caught that morning, and that's what we'd have for lunch or dinner. I miss those days! TFM's seafood is as good as it gets. If I lived near Tokyo Fish Market, I'd probably be here all the time, buying fish to cook or their prepared food for those nights you just don't wanna cook. Lately I've been craving Hamachi Kama, so my husband and I drove all the way to TFM to get kama and other Japanese groceries. I couldn't believe how inexpensive the kama was. $9.99/pound! We bought two pieces for $7.95. I baked them at 400 degrees in the oven that evening and we had a delicious dinner! This market is small but they carry all the ingredients that you'll need for Japanese cooking. I bought a few things for future meals and am already planning my return! This place is kind of amazing. Rarely in the bay area can I get such a wide variety of sushi grade fish for the quality I want. I bought the hamachi (belly side), ootoro, salmon, bluefin tuna and uni and I'm amazed at how delicious they all were. Also, if you're a fan of sake, shochu or any other specialty Japanese beverage this is the place to go. They have a huuugggeee selection near their entrance and boy was I surprised they carried the awamori I wanted from Osaka. Also, pro tip: reserve your sashimi in advance and ask them to deskin and devain it for you (it'll save you the hassle). Love love love shopping here at a Tokyo fish market. I can stay here for hours. I come from Benicia just to get fresh sashimi here with the pickled ginger, sushi rice, vegetables and Asian goodies. I also love looking through the specialty store next door. The Asian knives are impressive and expensive. My brother, who is a sushi chef in Europe, loves this place as well. This is my little Japan. When I'm there I want to buy everything. The grocery selection is amazing, and the price isn't bad at all. I would say it's cheaper than Japan Town in San Francisco. And the FISH. They are all very fresh, and whether they are sashimi-grade or not is clearly marked. Great selections. Not sure if the price is good or not, but at this point I don't care. We don't get to go here too often -- maybe every other month or so. But when we do, we buy a cartful of food, and several kind of sashimi-grade fish, then we have a hand-roll sushi party that evening. The small gift shop in the middle of the lot is also a great fun to visit. You can find all kinds of Japanese kitchenware. Two negatives: 1. Their Ikura (salmon roe) is definitely more expensive. 2. I will never ever patronize this establishment again!! I went there to get some pickled ginger and wasabi. I picked up the fresh wasabi (3.99) it was about a once. I then proceeded to get my ginger. I then asked a employee where's the wasabi in the tube? He walked me to the the aisle. I picked one and processed to go back and put the fresh wasabi back where I got it from.
