My personal favorite is their BBQ 1/2 chicken teriyaki. Made fresh daily, I often dream of it (the teriyaki chicken) when I haven't had it in a few weeks. I love this place! Best spot to buy seafood and sashimi. They have a large variety of fish. But the best thing i like about this place is they sell live oysters! They have couple kinds to choose from. They used to shuck them for you but i guess health regulations doesnt let them do that anymore. So you need to go home and shuck it yourself. I bought it couple times and out of the 3 times only one is bad. Pricing is decent for oysters. I also like the sashimi they have prepped in cute little containers with the wasabi! An excited 20 year old hops a bus after google mapping the directions to get here. She walks up, confused as heck as to where she's going (the front building, the "original fish market" is now the gift shop and the current fish market is in the back), walks in, wanders around, sees a guy, lights up, walks toward him as he greets her with a smile, and asks him for help. Seriously. The best service ever for a girl that asks, "How much should I get for 6 people? What do you recommend? Can you slice them? hmm.. actually, let's get that instead... Sorry, it's my first time." Then she walks away thinking she's "done" before coming back to get 6 oysters and 1/4 pound of ginger. The guy that helped me was such a sweetie and he was so patient! This is definitely not cheap, but as you know, Japanese food tends to be more exorbitant than other food, so a great quality vs. price ratio is what you are truly looking for. Mind you, I'm a HUGE fan of Berkeley Bowl. Just NOT a fan of their uni selection. Brought it home... and it was NOTHING in comparison to the the sea urchin I usually get from Tokyo Fish Market. Likely to make this 5-stars if we can ever get through this pandemic. Maybe there's a way to leverage the store space/building in the front to carry either just fish? Or just groceries? My wife absolutely loves her sashimi and had heard about this place so we had to check it out on a Saturday that we found ourselves in Berkeley. It's nice that the store has a parking lot for their customers (and more parking around the corner in the back), that definitely makes things easier. They've got a lot of Japanese food items here- snacks, grocery items, etc, but the star item here is obviously the fish. They have a big selection of sashimi grade fish at their counter. Take a number, wait for it to be called, and the staff will get you what you need. It was a little intimidating, as we'd never tried to buy our own sashimi before, but the staff was helpful and took the time to answer our questions. You can buy what you want and if you only want a little piece, there is a little refrigerated case where you can buy small pieces of sashimi. I ended up picking up a shrimp tempura onigiri into our basket on the way out and that was so good! We definitely weren't disappointed by our two types of tuna and hamachi as well- we had a sashimi feast for dinner that night at a very reasonable price! We'll definitely be back! read more

The grocery store has all sorts of delicious groceries - spices, seaweeds, oils, fresh tofu, veggies - and the best sake selection I've ever seen. I loved the old Tokyo Fish Market - tiny and crammed full of awesome - but the new grocery store and remodeling that they did a ocuple years ago is just world class. Nice staff and great fish selection. The inside is a bit small but really packs a lot for its size! My roommate always comes here for fresh, delicious, and affordable sashimi. I come here for the random things that remind me of my time in Japan (sesame nabe base?? Yes please!). Also, every time I come here I discover something new. Today I discovered two things. 1) Don't get prepared edamame for $2+ when you can buy a bag of frozen edamame for $1.50 (ish) and just throw them in boiling water with salt for the same result! Game changer. 2) Tokyo Fish Market sells crispy, delicious, grilled salmon skin for $1-something (depending on the size of the skin)!??! Great find for me, terrible for my waistline. Awesome fish selection is but a tip of the iceberg, the place offers quite a bit more and way better than a more mainstream market like nijiya. Recently, they started selling fresh food ready to go like their fresh sushi made daily and lots of refrigerated lunches and dinners from their own kitchen. All decent tasting and affordable. Their theme is seafood and their best is their fresh raw seafood. If you want to make sushi on your own which isn't that hard to do, you can find everything you need at this store including veggies and avocados which are considered fruit. And on the same premises is a gift shop which have lots of nice kitchenwares that you can get for yourself or others. I bought a Beehouse teapot there (sold cheaper than at other places) and they have tons of variety. It's a fun adventure everytime. read more

We were very disappointed. My wife and I love sashimi, so we regularly come here for raw fish. we used to loved their quality. Our 11 month old daughter loves salmon too, so last week, I waited in line for more than an hour on a Saturday morning so I can get her some sashimi grade salmon from the store and of course some sashimi for ourselves. We've got 2 pounds of salmon, 1 pound of hamachi, half pound hirame, and 1 mirugai. I went home and cook the salmon for my daughter (she cant go raw yet) and when we are serving it to her, we notice there is still bone in the salmon. Good that we still double check before serving anything to our daughter, so we caught that fish bone before she get choked. We paid extra for the sashimi grade fish filet, there shouldn't be any bone left inside those fish. so we are very disappointed. read more

When you find me here, you will see me going home with uni, tuna, tako, and anything else that seems to be the fresh catch of the day. The store does have great sea food and other stuff. However, I was super disappointed yesterday when I was there. I went there before going to work, I am a healthcare provider and my shift start at 13:00pm and I got there right after 11am. I asked the door man if they allowed healthcare worker to get in without standing on line and told him that I need to be at work 1pm. I showed him my work badge. But he said NO with very impatient tone, he said that it is only 10 minutes waiting on line. I had to waiting more than 30 minutes and rushed out without finishing shopping. Finally, a place that had a large enough selection where I didn't feel like I was forced to buy The common fillets of fish offered at regular grocery stores. Curious enough as I walk towards the front door there was a huge line to the right of the pathway about 50 feet long and as I got closer to the door they were all waiting for shaved ice that was probably a rarity there or anywhere in the bay area for that matter! Funny, as I was looking on the Internet for any kind of fish market and selection thereof it didn't seem there was anything around in the East Bay here in the San Francisco Bay area. Where I come from in the Seattle Washington area there's an easy handful of Stores that have as large or better selection than what I saw here in Berkeley. It's the only place I know that carries poi, Japanese bread, or shiso (Japanese herb) and many items that I look for my Japanese dishes. Everyone working there has been very nice and helpful to locate things I needed, and if they don't know what I'm asking for, they will go and ask someone who knows and can help locate it. All the produce are fresh and healthy (green) looking. I'm not a fan of limp wilted produce. Besides the unusual things, they carry most of the everyday items like different noodles, sauces, Japanese crackers, sake, rice to name a few. They also carry some cooked items and sushi to go, and of course, bento boxes. There is also a gift shop in a separate building. This place is great. If you're ever hungry for sushi... They got your back! They have a bunch of bentos, and even yakisoba and cold soba ready and packaged to go. They also have a nice variety of onigiri such as salmon, tuna, tempura, and others. I get their packaged uni and sliced as well because it tastes pretty fresh. Just make sure you eat it right away! But if you're really hungry, check how big the sliced sashimi is. Although its pretty fresh it was really thin and tiny! I got it for $3.49 and got uni for $8.99. The packaged food pricing is standard if not cheaper. The onigiri is $1.50 compared to nijiya in japantown sf for $2.00. They also have a number of Hawaiian snacks. Update: so we now come here often and love their fresh fish and variety of seafood choices that I've not been able to fine anywhere else. I can even buy fresh sushi roll that are fresh and fabulous! The parking can be challenging but there is parking lot around the back of the store that I've always found space. So glad I researched a fish market on yelp! This came up with four and a half stars so we figured we'd try it, boy what a find! The shop has no smell whatsoever of fish so you can tell everything's really fresh. They have some amazing fresh choices even fresh root wasabi! We got some fresh salmon and cooked crab. We will definitely be back to try the fresh oysters, sushi and wasabi root. One of the reviews I read said the store was a bit pricey although for fresh good quality fish I thought it was pretty reasonable. The rest of the store is really cool they actually have quite a few fresh vegetable choices that are organic, and a lot of oriental items like brown rice vinegar that is fermented! I can see that the parking could definitely be a challenge cause there's only a few parking spots although we were lucky and were able to grab one someone left. Parking can be a drag, especially if you are lured into the small lot in front of the market, but this place is a gem, and street parking or the overflow lot around the corner (off of Gilman) usually can accomodate. I don't think that I can add much to what has already been written, but there are two things that worth mentioning: 1. If you want prepared food, most specifically, you will want to come earlier in the day. My experience with the selection of prepared foods has been that in the morning, early afternoon I tend to find a lot more selection that in the late afternoon. 2. Today at around 4pm, the older Asian lady who worked at the cash register was EXTREMELY RACIST, unprofessional and discriminating! We witnessed her treating another customer like crap! And even yelled out really loud that they didn't accept food stamp! And that is a private and sensitive matter. She was basically YELLING at these poor customers when they did nothing wrong and looked extremely angry. What I buy: Hamachi - 1/4 lb Amberjack - 1/2 lb Toro - 1/4 lb (you don't need a lot) Uni - two uni beds (I don't like to share) Sushi rice - $2 for a tray packed of sushi rice; I sometimes call ahead of time and have them hold it at the counter because sushi rice lady goes home before I can get off work. Tokyo Fish Market is a neighborhood Japanese market on San Pablo that we've been eyeing for a while. I parked on the street (there's a small parking lot but it fills up quickly) and headed in. To my surprise, it's a market that carries much more than just fish and meat. I went over to the prepackaged sushi section and picked up one pack (5 pieces) of Salmon nigiri, one pack of Hamachi, and a pack of Alaska roll (tuna, avocado, masago). The total was ~$27 and it was a good amount for 2 people for lunch. There are many Yelp photos of poke but there was no poke the day I went. Maybe next time! read more

If you want Uni at home, here is the place for it!! :) We just bought a 1/4 tray today for $8.99... I think the amount would have been used to make about 5 uni at the sushi restaurant. So, this is definitely a bargain!! The most important thing is that it tasted so fresh and yummy... They have all sorts of sashimi for you to prepare at home (hamachi, kanpachi, amaebi, toro, etc...). Of course, not very cheap but definitely a bargain compared to going to a Japanese retaurant...
