First time here. Was. Not. Disappointed. Great vibes. Great food. Great service. Did not have to wait long for my drinks and appetizer despite it being a busy night. Enjoyed a good highball and a Sapporo plus the Omakase Sushi and some Takoyaki to start. Everything was out very quick and the sushi was fresh!! Yes, it was very tasty. The takoyaki was steaming hot although I do think it was slightly lacking in flavor. If you're near the Downey area, stop by and ask Chef Ian to hook you up!! You will not be disappointed. read more

Love Tokyo Garden, been a fan since 2018. Wonderful experience everytime I go, hospitable waiters and waitresses who check up on whenever I'm there. The manager of this location is very kind, although I do miss the one who transferred to their sister location. The Ambiance is a nice homey feel with low lighting and nice pictures in the wall. The overall aesthetic and atmosphere set is great and very comforting. The food, always a 10. Wonderful rolls and salad. The poke bowls are beautiful and so tasty! I found this place by accident. I really wanted sushi while my husband wanted Shakey's Pizza and since this restaurant was right by Shakey's, I decided to give it a try. What a gem of a restaurant. First time coming here, recommend by a friend. Parking is plentiful no issues with finding any spots which is a plus. Came here around lunch time 12. Upon coming inside I really enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. All the wood furniture and the layout of the restaurant. Well kept, tidy and clean. We were instantly sat down with no wait time. Service here is without a doubt GREAT! Forgot to catch the waiters name but he was awesome! The food on the other hand wasn't meeting the expectations of the service and the decorations of the place. I ordered the popcorn shrimp and salmon rolls. The sushi was so tiny that it made the plate look empty and for the price you're better off going else where. The restaurant and service is A++ no complaints but the food I believe could be better. I'm giving a 2 star for this reason. Don't think I'll be back but go ahead and try it for yourself. This could've been avoided if he would've asked our waiter for some info. The restaurant is not that big. He held my daughter because she was the last one behind us. Nope nope nope. Even the customer service was lacking. Quick to take our order but they barely came around after, typically this isnt a bad thing but they didn't bring us all our food. I ordered a bento box with teriyaki salmon and chicken katsu and it was gross. I even asked my husband to taste it and he agreed it was like cardboard and the salmon wasn't fresh. Honestly we won't be back. It was such a disappointment. Skip it. So many other choices nearby! read more

I was excited to come here for lunch given that they have a pretty good Yelp rating. However, my meal wasn't as enjoyable as I would've liked it to be. Though the service and food were pretty good, I wish the sushi chef that made my rolls was more attentive and knew the menu better. I ordered fried oysters and black spider roll with soy paper which should have eel on top and inside the rolls. When it arrived and I started eating it, it instead had spicy tuna on top and no eel inside. I mentioned this to the sushi chef, he looked at the menu and realized he had made my order wrong. I was expecting for him to remake my roll but he just put eel on top without removing the spicy tuna and I didn't get the eel that was supposed to be inside as well. $20 for sushi rolls and the order was wrong didn't quite sit right with me. The chef was also on his phone for the better part of the hour I sat there and ate. I don't know if I'd come back...maybe to give it another chance. But I hope he can do better when it comes to order accuracy. read more

This is my first time at Tokyo Garden, and it was an amazing experience. The environment coming inside the restaurant is very welcoming, thanks to all the servers and especially the manager, Heather. The food was one of the best I ever had. The appetizers like calamari and the yellowtail collar were so good. The sushi melts in your mouth without the fishy smell, and the rolls are so flavorful! This is our favorite sushi spot in the area. We always go here whenever we're craving some sushi. Portions are a good size for what you pay (in my opinion) We got the monster roll (top) and as always it's delicious! The crunchy toppings really add to the texture. I always enjoy their scallop dishes and today I ordered the B.S.C.R roll. It's california sushi roll topped with scallops and this light mayo (?) based sauce! Will definitely order again. We had a wonderful Father's Day celebration at Tokyo Garden! The food was outstanding, with some of the finest sushi rolls we've had at incredibly reasonable prices. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. One thing that made the experience even better was using the Yelp waitlist...we were seated promptly upon arrival, which made our visit smooth and stress-free on a busy holiday. Tokyo Gardens has always been one of our favorite places for sushi--we've been coming here for over 10 years, and it used to be a spot we could rely on for both great food and a welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was the worst experience we've ever had here. The biggest issue was the service, specifically with the manager, Helen. She came across as rude, unfriendly, and completely dismissive of what I was asking. Instead of trying to help or even acknowledge our concerns, she made us feel like we were an inconvenience. That kind of attitude is really disappointing, especially from someone in a management role. On top of that, the restaurant itself felt chaotic and poorly maintained. It looked like they may have lost a lot of staff--things were disorganized, service was slow, and there was a noticeable lack of attention to customers. We weren't the only ones frustrated; you could hear other diners around us complaining as well. It's honestly upsetting to see a place we've loved for so long decline like this. The only reason we even consider coming back is because of Marlon, who continues to provide great service and is one of the few bright spots left here. If this is the direction the restaurant is heading--especially with how customers are treated by management--we won't be returning. We truly hope things improve, but this experience was enough to make us seriously reconsider coming back. read more

We arrived at 9pm on the dot, a little late, but according to their listing they are open until 9:45pm. We are seated quickly, ordered food and waited. I received my appetizer and meal and waited for my girlfriend to get her order. This wait turned into literally 35-40mins. We actually got the check and we're told they would be closing the register so I asked the waitress if they had forgotten about her item. We are asked if "we still want it" and obviously did I mean, why wouldn't we? They did. Infact, their explanation was "the item was burned and they forgot but we are making another one now". The item eventually comes, at this point 45mins later. They give me the check again, and offer a measly $4 discount on an order of $47! That's not even 10%, doesn't even cover taxes! Funny enough, the couple in the seat behind us actually got complimentary sake for their wait, I was expecting them to atleast offer this as a condolence, but not even that. Horrible first time experience here, I honestly would not recommend anyone spend their hard earned money here because it seems as thought everyone who works here gives little to no thought at all. Another little cherry on top of this experience, was that the cooks objectified my girlfriend as she walked to the restroom. This guy literally checked her out and told his buddy to look in that direction. Really disgusting disposable behavior. read more

I'm so disappointed, I'm giving them 2 stars because I come here a lot & most of the time I can't complain, but last night was different! went with my daughter & her dad around 6:30pm. We had to be at dance practice by 8pm. (Which is a block away) we figured we stop and get a few sushi rolls. It took 15-20 min to get sat. Which is no big deal it's always packed, but once we got sat our server got our drinks & left us there for another 25 min. He was too busy taking payments from other guest and having people write down their names to wait for a table. I work for a restaurant and I understand it gets busy but to stop and take a min to just get or order down wouldn't have took long. No other server acknowledged us at all. I called one over before my daughters dad was about to walk our. Only because I was craving sushi so bad. He took our order. 2 rolls and the kids plate & it took another 20 min to come out. Soda was flat, but the rolls were good. Considering I only had time to eat two pieces. So disappointed that I don't think I will go back. I recently tried Tokyo Garden Sushi, and it was a great experience! We ordered the Hawaiian, Love, and Picante rolls, and all three were delicious. Each roll had fresh ingredients, well-balanced flavors, and a beautiful presentation. This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in downey. The waitresses are really nice and helpful. The food is delicious. I would recommend the Samurai Roll. I never liked eel till I tried this one. Yes some of the rolls can kinda taste the same. But hey, you gotta get creative and order a variety of different rolls. Not the same kind of rolls only different toppings. On weekends this place can get pretty busy but the wait isn't very long. Staff is accommodating and they have big colorful fun Cake hats for birthdays that you offer for birthday boy or girl and sing to you. Food is tasty with a variety of fresh sushi, roles and baked seafood. However, I was disappointed when they ran out of oysters but they must be good if they ran out on a Wednesday. Just went there over last weekend for dinner with my friends for the first time and i fell in love with it. This place is so packed and busy, cant believe i never knew about this place until now. Unfortunately, this makes my experience seem much less like an isolated incident and more like a recurring customer-service problem. My own experience involved someone at the front who was unnecessarily difficult, unwilling to help with basic questions or alternatives, and ultimately refused service when I asked to speak with management. What is even more concerning is that I subsequently tried multiple times to reach management about what happened and did not receive a return call. When several recent customers are independently describing similar experiences with front-of-house staff, I would expect management or ownership to take those complaints seriously. Based on my experience and the pattern reflected in other recent reviews, I cannot recommend this restaurant. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere that values its customers and treats them with basic courtesy and respect.
