We also got the gyoza appetizer, the only edible thing, just tasted like regular, how it's supposed to taste, but basic. Chicken is rubbery & honestly didn't look appetizing. Shrimp is tiny, looks like bagged grocery store shrimp & tasted very very old. I don't recommend the food. The lady on the phone was nice. We paid about $60 for 4 bowls and an appetizer. I've eaten several times at Tokyo with varying results, some good some fair but, the latest visit was appalling. I told the waitress three times I wanted my meal with 'white rice' and she repeated 'white rice' but, when my food came it was definitely not white rice. I don't think English is her native language. The cook kindly took it back and brought me a dish with white rice. Under the meat was a foul-smelling black oil, the consistency of 10W motor oil, that I assume was badly overused cooking oil(?). The meat seemed slightly overcooked but fortunately, neither the smell nor the taste of the oil was transferred to the meat. As I'm eating, I notice the 'white rice' is gradually getting darker. Lifting a portion, it appeared that the cook had dumped the original rice and plopped the new rice directly onto the pool of black oil. This black goo was seeping up into the rice, rendering it completely unfit to eat. I knew the food prep lacked consistency but this last dish was one of the worst I've ever been served anywhere. my husband and I ate at Tokyo yesterday for the first time. I should have known it would not be a real Japanese restaurant when we walked in and country music was playing. It was 12:00 and we were the only customers!! We were told to be seated anywhere - booth 8. Sat for a while and no one came so I retrieved a menu myself. I ordered teriyaki chicken and husband had hibachi chicken. That was the toughest chicken I've ever eaten in my life. I was not able to eat only about 1/3 of it. The vegetables were stir fried zucchini, squash and onions. Lots of rice. Very disappointed in the food and will never eat there again. Very surprised there were no customers at lunch time. Stopped at this restaurant on my lunch break and ordered off the lunch menu. Food quality was great! The menu had plenty to choose from and even offered sushi. The pricing wasnt bad considering the food selection to choose from.They do have a bar and offer plenty of beer specials! The only thing I wish would have been better was the service! This a good restaurant for Japanese. The ambiance is great. My family and I have eaten here several times. I've had the shrimp bowl with noodles and broccoli it was simply delicious. My husband loves the chicken teriyaki. I definitely would recommend this establishment for an evening of good food and drink. read more

They NEVER answer the phone, the food takes forever, the workers are incompetent. I drove 30 minutes there to get dinner, called for the entire 30 minute drive and only got a busy tone. We stopped in on our way home from the beach. There was only one server Kelsey she was prompt, efficient, and nice. Our food was excellent I had the hibachi chicken and my husband had hibachi steak and shrimp. We each got soup and salad as well and the bill was only $25! We will be stopping here again! read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. In an area full of little else besides fast food joints, greasy spoons and barbeque, this place offers somewhat healthier options. I got the hibachi chicken entree with white rice and vegetables (which turned out to be stir fried zucchini and onions). My boyfriend ordered the hibachi chicken bowl with fried rice and for some reason his had a glaze/sauce on it while mine didn't (which was fine with me). The chicken was chopped up thighs and it came with a cup of a pinkish mayonnaisey sauce on the side. They also have sushi which I'm not completely sure that I would order. Apparently they are in a new location that's more than double the size of the previous location. The interior is nice and cozy with a partially open kitchen. Interestingly, everyone working there was speaking Spanish, so don't go expecting authentic Japanese. read more

Horrible service. Phone is always busy...when they do answer you they put you on hold and conveniently hang up. Finally get someone who doesn't hang up on me and place an order to pick up. Get there and they ring me up I pay for my food, they say it's still cooking. 15 minutes later they say they don't even have my order. I ask for a refund and they would not refund me. The food is the only reason I continue to come back here however, the service is terrible! The waiters sit and talk about the customers like they're not even there! They don't offer refills on drinks voluntarily, they don't greet you when you walk in, they don't say thank you for your service. Bottom line, they act as if they don't need the job! The prices and food are quite reasonable. The service is quite average with a few bright spots such as a server named Autumn. Her service is great. I have noticed the shrimp in the hibachi shrimp dinner are NOT properly deveined. This restaurant is a suprising find in Whiteville. If you go you should try the white Whiteville roll on the sushi menu. It is rather unique and quite tasty. If you order TO GO beware, they will charge for ginger sauce and will nickel and dime for everything. Eating in house, it's all unlimited. read more

Definitely a big ZERO in quality. Went in sat down and almost immediately after ordering it was at our table. Should have been suspicious then. Did not have time to cook it. Had Habachi chicken with rice and vegetables. Chicken was grisly, looked old and tasted the same. The stir fried vegetables came out of a greasy pan where the day for hours. The rice was uneatable. Old looking, smelled like it was cooked in fat. We both had the same thing and got up and left it. I guess next time I will read yelp reviews before trying a restaurant like this. We came in for dinner. Staffs were quick & friendly. Foods came out quick too (there were just 2 or 3 more tables beside us). However, we found everything was too salty. We got Teriyaki chicken & Mahi Mahi special of the day. The chicken & the fish were very salty, even to eat with rice. I think the chicken & the fish will taste very good if the chef was just limit the salt. The fried rice & vegies were good. We ordered Miso soup and it was so salty that we couldn't get to 3rd spoon, also, it's absolutely not authentic. Seaweed salad & Sashimi Tuna were good. Sushi menu was quite limited. One thing I think they overpriced is hot tea, which is just a bag of Lipton and they charged more than $2 for 1 bag. You could buy a whole box with hundred of bags for less than $2 at Walmart or any markets. This place looks nice & the price for food is ok. In regards to sushi, I give this place a 1 start. However, I gave them two stars because I am giving them the benefit of the doubt, and I did not try their hibachi. The sushi looked like a preschooler rolled it. The rice was just weird and did not taste like it does at normal sushi restaurants. I also ordered crab salad thinking it was the authentic crab salad at regular sushi places and it was iceberg lettuce with strips of crab that smelled super fishy. Served with ranch dressing. Gag me! I really tried to like this place. I ended up stomaching the avocado roll which was just plain avocado and rice. I guess I was expecting real sushi so this place was a disappointment.
