I was grabbing my husband takeout from next door and wanted something lighter so I called in a quick takeout order. I've seen the restaurant for awhile but had never been inside. I love hibachi but wasn't sure about an express version. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had full glass windows so you could still see food being made. There were some booths around the restaurant and a register at the front. Menu with pictures were on the wall which was helpful. Paper copies were also available. The restaurant also looked clean. My food was made quickly and there was somewhere to sit while I waited. The flavor was good and lots of it. I would have like maybe a tomato or cucumber in the salad since it was lettuce and carrots with ginger dressing. (-1 star) I enjoyed the experience and would go back. read more

If I did a blind taste with other similar places with a 10 minute drive my final rating would be: Shrimp Tempura: ok, but would not be my first place winner. House Salad: definitely not in the top place list, dressing was weak. Beef Hibachi Noodle: one the plus side, not a greasy as some. However on the negative side, the dish was like 85% noodles, vegetable content was on the lower than normal side. We got takeout after visiting Busch Gardens. HIGHLY recommend. It is worth driving out of the way for. The portions for the vegetable hicbachi entree were huge. For the price of $8.50 you can't beat it. Food was cooked to perfection and the yum yum sauce tops it off. Will definitely be coming again. read more

I was looking for something different and I came across Hibachi Express on Yelp; the reviews seemed very positive so I decided to check it out. First impressions, the restaurant is in a strip mall right beside some construction, so if not looking for it, it can be hard to miss. Inside, the restaurant is clean, staff is friendly, menu is very extensive would many options to choose from and everything is cooked to order (which you could see through the glass). Overall, food was decent, portion sizes are wonderful (you won't be hungry after). I ordered the Hibachi Shrimp, w/ rice & veggies. The shrimp were nice size, veggies tasted great, the rice on the other-hand tasted very stale & old and I avoided eaten it. WOW! Saw this on Yelp and the reviews looked really good so I thought I'd give a try for a Friday night takeout. The food is amazing, tasty and fresh. The veggies are so tasty! I ordered chicken and shrimp with white rice and extra zucchini and a lot of yum yum sauce! My new favorite stop for Hibachi. The restaurant is so clean and there's a huge glass for you to watch them cook (great for kiddos). I'm coming back for sure! read more

During Covid, you have to order over the phone and then pickup at the window. Be prepared to wait a while. She told me the food would be just 10 mins. Got there and waited an extra 20 mins. So that was annoying. They also raised some of their prices, so don't go by the prices on their site. The food is pretty good though. I had the shrimp bento box and it comes with rice, spring roll, 4 pieces of a Cali roll (which was kinda gross) and a salad. Lots of food! Enough for two people to have full plates. Chicken was cooked and well seasoned, so were the veggies. Not gunna lie the rice was bland. I also had the fried dumplings as an appetizer. Every member of my family ordered their own Hibachi platter and there was so much food, which resulted in leaving some for the next day. I've had the steak, chicken & shrimp Hibachi plate twice now and I can say they are consistent. Plenty of food, decent enough of protein too. Food is cooked to order as if you were at a traditional Hibachi venue just without the cooking show! It's a nice plus to be able to see/watch the cook prepare your Hibachi on the drill. There is a very large window along the entire kitchen that allows all to see what's going on back there. The Hibachi plate I had contains the fried rice, chicken, steak and shrimp and veggies, as previously mentioned. If I had one critique it would be there is a general lack of seasoning. The chicken has literally no seasoning that I could tell, so adding some soy sauce was absolutely necessary. I should also mention my wife had the seafood combo Hibachi which contained shrimp, scallop and fish (salmon). In this instance the salmon was way overcooked - so they need to get better in that regard. read more

First the menu was inaccurate. They had a grand opening menu that offered 3 rolls for 8.99z when I asked for that they told me it was no longer available. I ordered a few sushi rolls and a steak/shrimp hibachi. The sushi was boring. It tasted like cheap "gas station" stuff. I mean the prepackaged togo stuff found in grocery stores and gas stations. It was fresh and made to order but it was very blah. The hibachi that I ordered was great! There was a good amount of shrimp and steak. The price was great. I think 10.95? I forget. If I return here it will not be for sushi. The hibachi was perfect. That may bring me back here again. They do not offer a military discount even with Ft Eustis right near by. read more

So far the best hibachi grill/sushi in the area. Food is made to order and fresh. Portions are great and the prices are way lower than all the other Hibachi places in the area including Williamsburg. The staff isn't too friendly but the clean atmosphere and tasty food somewhat male up for it. We ordered the steak hibachi terryaki style. Large portion, lots of lovely rice (tasted like brown rice) and fresh veggies. We did not like the calamares. Although it was crispy the pieces were not cut in your typical rings but large pieces, making it not so easy to eat. The salmon boy something was wonderful. We missed the yum yum sauce offered at other hibachi grills, but hey you can't have it all. read more

First time going since opening. Very impressed. Given the area, I expected much less, but the interior is pretty fantastic. Elegant and impeccably clean given it's a take out joint. I went big today, got a squid bento, shumai, and dragon roll. Not a thing I didn't fully enjoy. Honestly the rice was a stand out because it was just plain old white rice pan fried in butter/oil, idk which, and no seasoning so it doesn't throw off the main dish. Which squid being fairly light itself is easy to overpower. This bento you could actually taste the squid with the rice. Bento comes with 4 pieces of california roll, which were on par with any other place with decent sushi options, a spring roll, which was a fairly generic spring roll but stuffed with veggies, and a 'California salad', which appears to be ginger and orange zest? Some kind of citrus action going on there with the ginger dressing, but it was fantastic. The shumai I could barely refrain from powering through all 8 pieces right off the bat. The shumai is hands down the best I've had since I've been in Hampton Roads. Just amazing. And lastly the dragon roll. Now I LOVE eel sashimi, and unagi/dragon rolls are definitely a staple when i get sushi. This did not disappoint. I really can't find anything bad to say Hibachi Express. The staff was friendly, the place is incredibly clean and modern, you can watch them prep your food start to finish if you want. I think the ONLY thing is the location, since currently the construction on Jefferson is a bother. For take out, this is probably the best I've been to. This place, quality wise, would be on par with many dine in only establishments. read more

Tasty spot for a quick lunch. Be careful with the prices though. They list their food at one price and then charge about two dollars more for "tax" even though there is no tax noted on the receipt. I asked to have my meal cooked with no sauce and when I requested some on the side she wanted to charge me 50 cent for extra sauce, even though they didn't discount my order for asking for no sauce. I'll have to see how their sauce system works when I return because I found this to be an annoying cash grab. I love this place! I don't have any complaints. This is the same hibachi grill that was originally located in Hampton off of Mercury Blvd. I visited the new location in Newport News and the quality of food has not changed. I ordered the Hibachi chicken and shrimp and it was really good. The shrimp could have been larger but they were seasoned well. The portion size was decent and filling. I can't speak on any of the other dishes however, I have had every variation of the hibachi entrees (except squid) and each taste really good. read more

Simply put, I will not be back. I thought this would be a great alternative to the ones formerly in the area but I'm just disappointed.

The cashier is very rude, if you ask a question it is always a smart remark. Not a very welcoming place to dine. The food is good but the poor customer service is unbearable. I refuse to spend my money here anymore because of it. Also I work nearby and my fellow coworkers feel the same way and we have stopped going as well. when they opened it was very good but it's gradually gone downhill and the service is awful. I've refrained from giving a negative review trying to give them a chance to redeem themselves but today was the third and final straw i ordered chicken katsu only to discover they don't have katsu sauce the main component of the dish. when I asked about it I was looked at like I was crazy for expecting to have the sauce that is the namesake of the dish. I was given white sauce instead which is no where comparable. my salad was completely dry and all the dressing was poured on top of my sushi. prior to this I was charged extra for asking for no rice without being advised when I ordered this was randomly done after not being charged. the second strike was a worm in my kani salad I ended up throwing all the food out because I was too tired to put my daughter back in the car and drive back this place is only a minute or two away from my house but I'll gladly drive further to get food and service worth my money. read more

I ordered this today, buffalo chicken wings for $6 6pcs, nothing special the sauce taste a little bit off. when I ate it 2 of them still has blood inside. So I gave it back, We waited like 10mins for that to reheat.
