    41. Spicy Garlic Oyako Bowl
    Kevin L.

Came for a quick, chill meal in the food court area. They have a honey-feel that I feel specializes in dishes that you'd eat at home. Opted for the spicy garlic oyako bowl which was egg and chicken over rice. The dish came out not like the sample 3d creations they showed on display. It was a lot drier, a lot less eggy, and just wasn't as presentable. The flavor though was ok, had that soy flavor and it felt like the chicken was marinated. Enough for a solid meal but still pretty sad looking as a dish. It is a self service kind of place but there is someone who helps to clean up the tables and she's super friendly and helpful and I really appreciate their work. For a quick and easy meal, totally would come to the food court. Maybe try the other shops but this is also ok.

I got the chicken cutlet egg curry and the mini beef belly bowl. Both were delicious and had great flavor; however, the egg for the curry was a bit misleading from the images. It was supposed to be like a fluffy egg over the plate, but as you can see from my picture, it just looks a little sad and underwhelming. Next time, I would avoid the egg as it was not worth it and just stick to the chicken and curry only.

Love this spot located inside the mitsuwa food court if you get a Japanese food craving while shopping. They have all the classic rice plates at this location and the curry combo had all the meats you would want. Shrimp, chicken karaage, potato croquette, and a katsu all topped off with curry sauce. Their karaage pieces are larger than normal so keep that in mind when determining how many pieces to order. Since they are in a food court, the seating is first come first serve and it can get quite busy during peak hours like lunch and dinner but you'll eventually find a table if you scout. The service can take a bit long while making the food but they are very friendly. The ambiance is what you'd expect at a grocery food court, loud, noisy and fighting for tables.

I ordered the chicken egg curry with the cashier after asking to get beef with it, they explained that it wasn't a set menu item so they weren't able to accommodate the request. Understandable, however when I received the dish there was no egg whatsoever and it didn't even cover a piece of chicken. The cashier was very rude trying to say "oh well that's wha you ordered" instead of finding a resolution.

I ordered the deluxe pork cutlet curry set. The plating was refined, and everything looked delicious. However, while tasty, I had some issues while eating. The pork cutlet was slightly tough while chewing. The breading on the potato croquet got mushy from the curry sauce poured on top of it. And the breading around the fried shrimp was really dense. While not perfect, I enjoyed my lunch at Tokyo Shokudo for the authentic Tokyo flavors and the reasonable prices.

Not the best. Has a good variety of meats but the breading was too much, not flaky and too crunchy. Meat was dry, rice was dry. Not a fan and maybe it was an off day. I think strangely enough I would still get it if I was craving a curry and was in mitsuwa already.

Excellent eatery for Japanese curry and chicken karaage (fried chicken nuggets)! They made everything fresh so the meal is hot and delicious! We ordered one chicken katsu curry and one karaage. The karaage also comes with small side dishes like half egg, seaweed salad, shredded cabbage, miso soup and a bowl of rice. They also serve two different sauces for the cabbage and the chicken. Chicken is juicy and flavorful while the battering is not too heavy. The curry is also good with decent flavor. Both dishes are tasty and highly recommended!

Ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Combo but ended up finding out it looks totally different from the window display ( see pic), on top of that it is burnt and extremely bitter with bizzare flavor which I ended up trashing it after only few bites . Reflected to the cashier lady about the substandard food being served but I highly doubt I would revisit this place.

Whatever you do, don't get the beef bowl. It's grainy, mushy, and not good at all. Thought it would at least be better than Yoshinoya, but I guess it's called beef bowl and not gyudon for a reason. :(

Little to no beef in this beef bowl.
    Liezl E.

This place is great for Katsu but I'm basing my review on their laughable beef bowl. Seriously. It's insane how little to no beef there is in this bowl and their decision to pass this as a meal. Sure, the unboxing looks pretty with the green onion bits in comparison to the place next door to them that just tosses the food in a styrofoam container... but there's no beef here. If you're looking for a basic beef bowl go next door to the spot to the left or better yet, go to Fatty Mart, but don't make my mistake of falling for the display bowl because you're not getting anything close to that.

It was decent Japanese food cafeteria. The wide selection of menu. And how fast they serve their food is pretty impressive. Very inexpensive. When I asked for mayo for my cabbage, the guy at the counter went out of his way to get it for me, I thought that was super cool. Just too noisy but other than that it was good.

    Miso tonkatsu
    Benson K.

My wife and I were in Santa Monica for a work related event, and after that we decided we wanted to go to Mitsuwa for lunch. I was super hungry because the meeting ran for a very long time. I saw that Tokyo Shokudo had miso katsu, a Nagoya based specialty which I hadn't had in years, so I ended up ordering the miso katsu. There was quite a line at lunch time, but the service was fast and efficient. It took a while to find a table, but eventually we were able to get our own table, which was first come first serve in a food court style setting such as Mitsuwa. I ordered a miso tonkatsu entree, which came with pickled vegetables, rice, and miso soup, as well as some cabbage with dressing. The miso sauce for the tonkatsu was not as strong as the red miso I remembered from having miso katsu a long time ago, but it was still good. The breading was good, but not as airy and light as I've had in other tonkatsu places. However, the tonkatsu was still solid, it was fresh, and the pork was juicy. The cabbage was solid. I also loved the side pickles. Solid place for lunch to be sure.

Fried Pork Cutlet & Curry, Rice, Boiled Egg, Pickles

I got the Fried Pork Cutlet Curry, For about $12, you get a savory dish that will definitely fill you up! The pork cutlet was crispy and moist inside. The curry was flavorful. The rice portion was very generous. Boiled egg was nothing special. My boyfriend and I came here and I had to wait a bit longer for my food to arrive. To compensate, they gave me a little bit more pork cutlet without being prompted to. Great service! I'd only come here if I was already in the Mitsuwa Marketplace. I know another place closer to me that offers great fried pork/chicken cutlets in Sawtelle, haha.

On a weekday during lunch time, the restaurant had a majority of its seats filled. We both tried their chicken cutlet and vegetable curry and really enjoyed it. The chicken cutlet was crispy on the outside while staying juicy on the inside, and it paired well with the rich and savory curry. The vegetables added a nice balance and made the dish not feel too heavy. The amount of rice was also generous for the price. Can't beat the ones at tonkatsu places but it works as a topping for curry. The omelet was thin and wasn't anything spectacular so I wouldn't get the egg again. This place is known for its customization potential. Pick your rice portion, spice level, toppings etc... buuuut be warned that it can come with a pretty steep price tag. It'll add up pretty quick. The pickles on the table are great!! Goes soooo well with curry and helps cut the fatty/greasy feeling. Or if you're starting to get tired of the taste, have more pickles! The chili powder is good too. Tip-- FREE PARKING!! Just follow the signs for restaurant parking. The entrance is around the corner + drive 1 min further down. There's a ramp to enter. Take the elevator up and you'll be where the restaurants are. They'll validate the parking slip. To get down, just go back to the same elevator (insert slip to scan or else elevator button won't work). Japanese curry is just one of things you have to be in the mood for. If you're craving then this will definitely be the spot for you. Otherwise it'll be kinda meh so just depends on you! Free parking in this area is a great bonus though.

Update- was really looking forward to dinner at Chubby Curry. My friends and I have patronized this…read moreplace since it opened. It was our go-to place for almost two years. We hadn't been in about 6 months and decided to drop in for dinner before a movie- Wow, has it changed- and not in a good way. There were fewer staff and they were spread thin, with not even half the tables full. The place was a little unkept. The menu is all digital- so we had some questions ordering our favorites. We got the Wagu steak with rice and curry and the breaded chicken breast. When the Wagu arrived it was unrecognizable- brown and looked over cooked - no pink. The entire dish was completely unappetizing. It was sad looking. I tried to show the server that this looked nothing like the menu photos in the front wall. He was already flustered and told me "to calm down ma'am" and that is "how it comes- we put soy sauce on it." The calm down nonsense was a real put off. My next question was, why is a restaurant putting soy sauce on perfect Wagu? None of the menu photos show soy sauce. We have never had soy sauce drenched Wagu here ever. The amount of soy sauce - if any-- is up to the guest. We all have our sodium preferences, right? I personally liked their Wagu plate as is. I tried to get the server to follow me to the front wall to show him the photo of all their Wagu dishes on their front wall and he was really not happy. Those photos were how their food always looked- fresh- colorful and delicious looking. The comparison was stunningly different- he would not hear it - and was visible upset with me. Sending this back caused quite a problem- more like an argument with the server who insisted this is how Wagu comes. It does not and I posted a review previously with photos from several visits to this once fun to eat at place. They offered to remake it and I caught the server and chef's convo. Chef was bewildered with the whole no soy sauce thing. The server came back with a small piece of Wagu in a service cup to show me what their Wagu looked like before the soy sauce bath. It was not the bright fresh pink. It was gray, like it had been prepped a couple days ago and refrigerated. Completely unacceptable and not appetizing. I told them to please not remake it. It would be a waste and please Just remove it and we'd order something else. The server was so upset with me he told me he would remove everything and not charge us at all. I felt that was unfair to the restaurant and his attitude was like don't order anything, and do not come back. My guy friend insisted that we pay and the server came back with a bill for just the chicken. I gave him cash for everything we ordered including the Wagu, and he brought me almost all the money back. I was particularly insulted by this. This was such negative energy- I did not want to touch it. I left all the money on the table and left. Message to the owner- replacing servers with digital menus does not lessen their work. it increases their time explaining what dishes are and how dishes come. You need more people because servers have more work in less time. I really felt for this server and did not feel any of this was his fault. The quality drop in food, the excess work due to digital menus, and food not matching the promises made in photos at the front wall from opening day are not your server's fault. We were expecting the same consistency and were sadly disappointed. We will not be returning.
