We are a couple of months into Covid restrictions being eased So I'm not sure what's going on here At this place that used to have Accurate takeout and pleasant and quick service when dining in. Dining in had gotten excruciatingly slow from about February until now so I started with takeout. Well they assess a takeout charge now so people who are getting takeout are getting punished. My last four takeout orders we're inaccurate and I had to stand at the window and tell them what I ordered. And all I kept hearing is excuses like "I didn't take the order" etc. So today when they Gave me my takeout and walked away without giving me my two side items I had to get their attention, for the 4th time in a couple of months. When I read all these reviews of Tom Jones Family Restaurant, or "TJs" as many longtime locals refer to it, I think of Charles Dickens. "It was the best of times...it was the worst of times." Or, perhaps, I think of those "Restaurant Rescue" shows where you have the before - worn down, falling apart, out of step - and the after - new, shiny, beautiful, fabulous. The contrast here is that stark. The reason is simple: New owners. Fellow Yelper Dee M recommended TJs to me, and one weekend morning the Patriarch and I decided to set off for the place, looking for a good diner breakfast. As we drove up I looked at the sign - very clearly older, like from the 50s and 60s, and thought, well, this will be interesting. Then we enter, and it's like we traveled through some weird time portal, because the place is diner-gorgeous. Bright, airy, lots of aquamarine and silver and sea green and grey. Beautiful patterned tile and upholstered booths. Frosted glass. Farmhouse lights, the latest style. A bathroom that I want in my home, it's that pretty. We're seated quickly, and service was great. I had the Belgian waffle with fresh strawberries, a side of scrapple, cooked on the flat top of course. Dad got the Blue Ribbon Special - eggs, pancakes, sausages, home fries. Both were delicious. I got a huge portion of fresh cut strawberries - actually more strawberries than waffle, which is rare because I like both a bit of strawberry and waffle in every bite. Usually I run out of fruit before waffle. Patriarch gave his food two thumbs up, they did his eggs perfectly, he said, and the pancakes are so good you don't need syrup. Stopped by Tom Jones today for the 1at time since remodel and new ownership. Tried their Pot Roast Absolutely delicious! The dinner comes with two sides and toasted buttered bread (I had Mashed w/Gravy & Mac N Cheese). The was real (not instant) and the Mac N Cheese was very creamy. Most importantly, the pot roast and aus jus it's served with has a great flavor. The new owners have really stepped it up. The place looks nice and is clean. Service was good and friendly. I have been coming to Tom Jones since I was a kid. It's evidently under new management since then. I remember it being good but the variable that's always stood out was the pricing of their food which was always REALLYYYYY good. Now, that's not the case, and I want to say that the higher price does not mean better quality food or service because my server was a young girl but she was soooooo extremely dry and monotonous. Don't want to drop her name because I wouldn't want to effect her livelihood. I still tipped her but she wasn't very attentive either. Anyway, the skillet was really bad (because of the high number of hard and almost inedible potatoes). The grits were soooo lumpy it wasn't even funny. I did eat the shrimp which was good but pleaseeeee get someone who can cook some grits to be your breakfast head chef. I'll give the place another try for lunch and dinner food. Breakfast in the area you should go to Upland Diner or Route 352 if you're looking for something cheap. If you don't mind paying more for the food, GO TO BITTERSWEET KITCHEN!!! read more

Love this restaurant and eat there several times a week. Breakfast always comes out perfectly and plenty of food. They have the best homefries around. For dinner you you can try the Meatloaf tower or the Chicken Marco Polo or Pot Roast. Three of my favorites and the stewed tomato side is also great. If you home style cooking this is the place. No it's not the greatest place to eat in Delco. It's not "clean" whatever that means fir a diner. So why do I love it? I like many others in my day enjoyed more than one very cheap 2:30 AM meal here. Call it nostalgia. But really, how can you not love a place that keeps their signature breakfast dish under $4 in this tough economy? $3.89 for the Blue Ribbon Special at this time of writing. And it includes coffee. No one beats it. Stopped in after many years today and sat at the counter like the old days. Grabbed a jumbo Jomo burger which wasn't too jumbo. But at $5.69 including fries was certainly a worthy deal. Not the best burger ever but it was good enough. That's this place in a nut shell. It's good enough. The prices are what make it worthwhile. I don't think the place smelled like stale smoke at all. The whole cleanliness complaint comes from overly picky people. It ain't a country club by any means but there are far worse places in terms of clean. It's fine. I think they finally purged that smoke smell. And the orange booths are incredibly tacky, and I hope they never get rid of them. It wouldn't be Tom Jones without them. read more

It was 7:40 PM and I needed dinner and a quiet place to take a 1 hour conference call. The young peppy (gorgeous) server was attentive and kind. I did not get the $3.89 breakfast (served all day) deal - but that is alot of food and I will consider it when I want breakfast. Mashed potatoes are from a box (so the server said) so I got a baked potato, ffrozen green beans and a surprisingly OK steak dinner. Plus a large diet coke with Vanilla syrup in it. (They can also put cherries in your soda). Very reasonable CASH only prices. Dated decor - but I bet it's fun when you are wasted on a Friday or Saturday night. It's been here for YEARS. read more

Wait staff is kinda friendly. Food isn't bad. However the silverware & dishes are filthy!!! I got a sore throat & a cold after eating here. The coffee smells like vomit. They only have one stall in the restroom and the staff use it too. The restroom also usually smells like puke. I don't think the staff wash their hands either. Pretty gross and disease causing. Another "Delco Proper" hotspot! The restaurant is totally 70's with orange vinyl booths, faux wood linoleum, wood paneling, etc. The place reeks of smoke, and the regulars monopolize all the counter seats (and they are not friendly people). The waitstaff is normally decent; it's a diner so don't expect much. It is crazy how this place is open 24-7 and someone is always there eating something. We once saw a family there at 4am who were talking about how they just finished driving home from a road trip vacation, and all they wanted to do was eat at Tom Jone's, and then go to bed. On Sunday after church it is crazy, and the line is out the door. When we were in our early 20's we'd often have parties and send the late-night people to Tom Jones for some food to sober up. They always loved it. There is something about the atmosphere, reminds me of "Pulp Fiction" somehow, in a vintage way. What to eat? BLUE RIBBON, Baby! Last time we bought... for $3.89 you get: 2 sausages + 2 bacon + 2 pancakes + 2 eggs + OJ + coffee + 2 slices toast !!!! It is always done FAST and it's always decent diner quality. Brookhaven is dry so don't expect any booze here. It sucks, but CASH ONLY! They have a walk-up pick up window on the side, but any time we ever did pick up they never used it. I stumbled upon this place many years ago while traveling for work, decided to come back with the gf since we love cheap eats and homestyle cooking. This time around, the food was not as good as I remembered. Don't get me wrong, nothing else will be as cheap and filling as this cash only place. The blue ribbon special consists of 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 sausage patties, 2 bacon strips, coffee, and juice. All that was offered for $4! How can you ever beat that price?!? Sadly, the sausage were burnt, the pancakes were undercooked, and the drinks didn't come for over 10 minutes on a slow night. I ordered the NY strip and western omelette since I was craving meat. The steak was completely well done even though I asked for medium rare. This didn't upset me though since you can't expect short order cooks to watch a steak that well. The problem was how salty the sauce was that came with it, almost made it inedible. Come here for cheap breakfast items, which is served 24/7, but don't expect amazing meals. I've been coming to Tom Jones ever since I was a little kid and I've even been a waitress here. So, my review is mostly nostalgic of good diner food since diners aren't prevalent in the north. This was the first time I went to the new ownership and was delightfully shocked at the change of interior. I would say for the better. Danielle was our waiter and she was incredibly attentive, which is rare for a diner with me since I basically drink coffee like it's going out of style. I ordered my usual: two eggs over easy with sausage patties, hashbrowns with cheese and onions, and rye toast. It's just how I remembered it. Although it was an oily meal, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only negative comment was prices changed; blue ribbon is super expensive. But, hey, if the economy changes, you need to change with it. I'm happy that they also added items to the menu and will come back whenever I'm in the area. What can I say about this place. I grew up in this diner. It's one of those local hometown icons that everyone in Delco seems to know of and appreciate for it's cheap CHEAP orders, fast service, cheesy orange deco, and never closing personality. I mean this place was open back during the blizzard of '96 when nothing else was. I walked there for three nights in a row through knee high snow drifts just to beat the cabin fever syndrome. I remember the only people allowed out of their homes were Pen Dot workers, so there we sat (3 of us) among the salt and plow people, drinking our coffees and laughing about how retarded we must be. Then we headed back home, trash can sledding all the way. This was no quick trip either. . .none of us lived that close, 45 minute walk at least. So this place is always open. It's sorta like the "Cheers" of the diner world, where everyone knows your name. . .aren't you glad you came. And you are always glad you went, well at least for the time there. Back home and within the privacy of your own bathroom you may feel differently, but you always seem to forgive their greasy ways. Remember this IS a DINER, and with that comes all the splendor a diner can bring. I don't think the wait staff has gotten new uniforms since 1972, yet they're always young college girls. And I don't think the menu has increased prices beyond a quarter per dish since 1995. (blue ribbon special still $2.99 for eggs, pancakes, toast, coffee, juice, bacon & sausage!) You just have to love this place. Especially if you grew up around here. I've been in the DELCO area for about 10 years now, either due to my gf/wife or now living here. Tom Jones is THE spot to be for that much needed resupply of body fuel at any given time of the day. In all the years I've been coming here, I've never once gotten anything but the famous Blue Ribbon Special. 2 pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, coffee, toast, juice for 3 bucks(cash!). Let me tell you something, it is the best feeling whether you're drunk, high, tired, stressed, paranoid, worried, happy, sad, indifferent, or even depressed. To know there is a place you can go to for a good breakfast anytime of the day, and just get the kind of thing that hits the spot. Went here with my girlfriend for a Saturday morning brunch. I had never been here before, but she had. Bottom line up front: It's a cheap, cash only diner. Don't expect gourmet anything. The bacon could've been crispier, and the toast was also pretty "raw", but it was more than enough food for $3.89. Only took a few minutes from time of ordering to food being brought out, and they were reasonably busy so I consider that a pretty good thing. But as a I said, it's cheap and it's a diner. For what it was, we both left satisfied and all for around $14. Temper your expectations appropriately, and it's a pretty good spot for cheap breakfast. Stopped in this place around 1pm on a Sunday, so it was pretty packed. The manager said he'd get us a seat in 15 minutes and did it in 13. Holla. We sat and it took a really long time for our waitress to get our drink order and then we pretty much didn't see her for 20 minutes. She rushes by, stops, apologizes and gives us to another server. The wait kind of sucked, but at least it got handled instead of it continuing to take forever. The 5 stars is for the chocolate milkshake I had here on Monday night. One of the servers there is a master at making perfect chocolate milkshakes. It was the most delicious chocolate milkshake I have had in years, which is saying a lot. Wednesday night I was back for more. Somebody else made it. And it was good, but not perfect. If you plan to pay for your meal with plastic here, you'll have to hit one of their ATM's to get cash, because they only take cash.
