We had been to Tomaselli's a number of times years ago when we were spending summers in Loon Lake. It's a wonderful family owned cafe, bakery and wood fire pizza restaurant open since 1981 in Elkton, Oregon. This time as we passed through town, we had to stop a get a pastry. I love the woodfire thin crust pizza. They have been making pizzas for over 30 years and it shows. I was told the pizza oven came from Naples, Italy. It's such a special treat to have this pizza. They used to have dinners but it looks like they're just open for lunch now until Friday when they have pizza. Too bad, they had a delicious prime rib! We stopped this time. They were having a contest-if they sold everything in the one case the boss would wear something fun. We bought a few items to support the cause. I definitely would go back to Tomaselli's and recommend it. It's a great stop if your on the road or more, if you're close by. read more

Nice stop while traveling from the Oregon coast. The coffee, 12 oz American, was excellent without bitterness. The bran muffin was perfect and tasted like bran not sugar. Amazing pasteries. I hate day shockingly so but I'm shocked. Driving from PDX to a small wedding event, we stopped here on the way to change because there are restrooms for customers and coffee. In addition to coffee we ordered a ruglach and it's the best I've ever had. This is better than New York, best ruglach period. The dough was excellent and the flavor was crystallized yet smooth. Excellent cinnamon sugar flavor. Would give this pastry alone a 5 star review, we ended up taking 6 home to the family. read more

Got a table when the place was basically empty. Waited 20 minutes before anyone took our order. Waitress couldn't explain what the soup of the day (African peanut) was, other than it had peanuts in it, and they were probably from Africa - didn't even try to ask the chef or find out more info. 2 tables that were seated AFTER us got their pizzas BEFORE us, and then they delivered OUR pizza to the wrong table. So we ended up waiting over an hour for our food which was literally only 1 single pizza. The waitresses loudly argued about their confusion regarding what happened to our pizza trying to deflect blame from themselves by saying "I didn't take that table's order so I didn't know!" It shouldn't have mattered who took the order if they had a sound process where every single order is attached to a table number. After we finally got our pizza we still had to find wait staff to ask for red peppers and parmesan cheese...and then we were given moldy Parmesan cheese! The glass jar it came in was cold from the fridge which means this place is not checking their ingredients, dates or following food safety rules. No one seemed to care or apologize, except the pizza chef, who was not at fault. Wait staff basically ignored us after we got our food, had to go to the front to ask for our check and pay. Thank you to the staff at Tomaselli's Bakery in Elkton. They were very accommodating and had great hospitality. My 2 young grand children were not able to come for Christmas and I truly just want to spend a little time with them while they opened there gifts. The staff made sure we had a comfortable spot to accommodate our needs and amazing understanding of the situation. The kids loved the cookies & Marty's Special Pizza was scruptious! (I may order it with extra cheese next time).The left over slice I warmed in oven a few hours later was still so delicious. Thank to all the staff there for accommodating us, having great food and being super family friendly. I will definately be back..may even make the long drive just for that pizza. In the past usually we just stop to grab a donut when passing through..and the Apple Fritters there are a million times superior to Sugar Shack or any Grocers. According to one member of our party of 8, this was a required stop on our way to the coast claiming that the coffee from this place was a necessity! As we pulled in, the outside doesn't look like it's anything special. When you walk in there is kind of a warm cozy feel about the place. Right in front of you will be a deli style counter ... fresh pastries ..... and hot drinks (coffee, steamers, hot chocolate). To the left and to the right, kind of separate rooms, are seating areas intended for the other items on the menu. Two people working the counter and fulfilling drink orders, the process was pretty quick. I would say that some of the pastries were starting to run low as of about 9:30 am on a Sunday. The drinks were fresh and hot and the pastries were a little more unique then the normal run of the mill donuts you find at a donut store. Pricing seemed to be reasonable and on par with what you would pay anywhere else. I would recommend these guys if you are in the area. Based on our stop here, my parents even indicated they would probably take a drive one day and end up here to try the food. Great brick oven in the room to the right for cooking the pizza, wish we had the time to stay and try them out. Maybe next time! read more

Most of the baked goods are good to quite good, even day old goodies. I had a ciabatta sandwich with the teeniest piece of salami and cheese, the bread inside was a bit gummy as it was probably a few days old. Extremely slow service, don't expect to get breakfast here without spending a minimum 2 hours. After we sat down we were brought waters and then forgotten about. We went up to get our own menus, to ask for coffee, and finally after waiting over 30 minutes went to flag down the waitress to put our order in. She said she thought the cook came to get our order?? Not a single time in the over 2 hours we were there did we see the cook in the dining room. Proceeded to wait over an hour for our food to come, which with 2 small children is not ideal. Elkton is a little town, less than 200 people, nearly in the middle of nowhere on a North Umpqua region road that roughly connects Interstate 5 with Reedsport on the Oregon coast. In any context, Tomaselli's Pastry Mill & Cafe might get five stars but in the context of Elkton it certainly does. This is an owner/ chef one man kitchen. That such diverse and delicious food and baked goods comes out of it demonstrates how much pride of ownership there is. Or as the blackboard above the bakery counter (also displaying the entree for that week's Friday night special dinner) said: "If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life." Remember that Friday night special dinner comment. We'll come back to it. When we had lunch at Tomaselli's a couple of weeks ago before walking across the street for wine tasting at Brandborg winery, Marty Tomaselli came out of the kitchen and walked about the restaurant asking everyone "how's everything?" Our mouths were too full of food to say anything but "DElicious" in response. But we should have said we had one complaint and it is this: Marty Tomaselli's wonderful bakery and cafe is three plus hours away from our neighborhood! If it wasn't for the long drive, we'd be regular customers. We loved it. Great food from a diverse menu of regular offerings plus a blackboard of daily specials, ultra friendly service and a sparkling clean interior with a just right for the locale, rustic welcome vibe. (Wheelchair accessible to boot.) Not to mention a pretty darned good selection of Umpqua region wines for sale in a rack near the bakery. (Which might come in particularly useful during the special Friday night dinners. But that topic has more to come.) Tomaselli's serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food options in a range that easily provide choices for vegetarians and carnivores with some vegan possibilities too at very reasonable prices. Take a look at the menus on the web site and you'll see what we mean. For lunch my hubby selected an eggplant sandwich and I had mac n cheese. He's an all Italian heritage, New York native tough customer about eggplant, and he said every element, from eggplant, to sauce to cheese and bread was just right. The mac n cheese was ooey, gooey good and served in a piping hot bowl. Salad served with each option was made of fresh, crispy greens with a choice of homemade dressing. If we had a recommendation it would be for the chef to cut / tear the greens a bit smaller as they are so large it requires a knife to eat the salad. But that's a small thing and we happily cut our own greens when they are this fresh. Then there is the bakery - home baked breads of various kinds and a pastry case filled with goodies. Including some which are gluten free. Too full for dessert, we bought a walnut cranberry sticky bun and rugelach to take with us for later. Both were yummy when we tucked into them very early the next morning with tea while watching the Royal Wedding nuptials on TV in a Roseburg hotel room, forty five minutes from Elkton.. Which leads us back to the problem of Elkton being so far away from anything else and the Friday night special dinners. I told you we'd get to that eventually. There are few lodging options in Elkton, many being rooms in B&Bs which share baths. The "isn't that fun" ship sailed for us on that set up a couple of decades ago. We have friends who say "We are too old and too rich to share a bathroom." We just say we are too old. Which means the nearest hotels as lodging options for us are roughly 45 minutes away. Since Tomaselli's serves special Friday night dinners that sound wonderful (on the Friday of the week we were there it was to be a Portuguese dish of chorizo and clams), we've had our tastebuds hankering to attend one of those for a couple of years now. We're willing to drive the three hours plus from our front door to get to dinner. But the problem is the 45 minute drive to a hotel after dinner, on dark or dusky North Umpqua backroads, especially if local wine is involved with the dinner meal. We're still trying to find a creative solution to the lodging issue that would allow us to have dinner at Tomaselli's some Friday night. If you go for a Friday dinner we'll be eager to read the Yelp review! In the meantime, we're planning breakfast at Tomaselli's sometime this summer. I'm thinking I'll order the polenta and eggs. Seriously? I thought by all the reviews that the food here would be good. Now, I'm by no means an individual for 'polite society', but holy crap! What kind of a yuppie joint is this? The atmosphere here is awesome which helps while you wait, and wait, and wait ....... finally my Philly cheesesteak arrived. As you can see they 'californicated' it by cutting it in half and making a french dip out of it?! That is not the true philly by any stretch. About ten minutes after the philly arrived they brought out this saucer with a few fries on it and said my order of large fries is still to come. Apparently, this is the 'small' order of fries that comes with the sandwich. Speaking of the sandwich, watch out for the coleslaw, apparently they think coleslaw is supposed to have vinegar squirted on it, nasty! Oh look! My large order of fries finally arrived 15 minutes after the small order. It was barely more than the small. For $15 you expect some food. I really appreciate a proper philly, so naturally I was very disappointed by this. God help them if an East Coaster were to come in and order one. After leaving here (I couldn't finish) I walked across the street to the grocery/deli for some food. They had a warming cabinet with the usual jo-jos, burritos and foil wrapped sandwiches kept hot. I tell you, I bought one marked 'philly' for $4.95 and it was far superior to what the restaurant had. The real bummer is that this was a nasty surprise after so many good reviews and comments. The coffee is GREAT, fantastic! The smoked brisket sandwich is fantastic. Both normal & Woodfired Pizza are very good. Pastries are good/great. Breakfasts are great. Do not buy the premade sandwiches, we got 2 & the bread was rockhard. Handmade bread goes dry & hard faster than factory bread. Ask to have sandwiches made to-order. My parents used to enjoy the cafe's special dinners but they've stopped having them, due to difficulty in getting staff, covid, etc. There are a LOT of elderly in this town that loves a get-together, with nice food. This is a local family business, that is for-sale as the owner wants to retire. Elkton is a very quaint old-fashioned town established in the 1850s, and the schools have test scores as high as private schools. read more

Once upon a time, in the little town of Elkton, there was a pastry mill and cafe that everybody loved. One day, a couple from a far away land was passing through town, and they decided to stop in for some dinner. They were greeted by smiling faces and given a warm welcome, and proceeded to order their dinner. Then suddenly... This was a really cool spot, had so many different options and the food was excellent. I had the chicken pot pie and it was as good as home made. Really wish places like this were more abundant. Elkton is so small, that if you blink, you just might pass a really great bakery and deli. Cute little store with some organic groceries, nice bakery selection that is filled with fresh breads and homemade pastries, and a little restaurant area here you can sit down and order a nice meal. We stopped for lunch and I ordered the Thai Grilled Veggie Salad for $8.25. A little pricey for the portion size, but it tasted really good. My children had the Super creamy cheesecake that tasted like heaven. The service was super friendly. I love the fact that they are Organic conscious. I like going here when driving through Elkton if I am going to the Coast, or staying at the RV park down the Street. They have a unique menu that offers freshly made food and you can tell it is quality. When I first came here years ago I had the chicken pot pie I remember it was one of the best because it had this pastry shell. The last few times I have gotten it, it still has the yummy pastry shell but I just wish the veggies were cut a little smaller, and that they would leave out the broccoli, and cauliflower and what ever other garden veggie you would assume not be in chicken pot pie. Now don't get me wrong I grew up on a farm eating all of these veggies, and they are yummy! But not in a pot pie. Now I have had other menu items such as, steak. It was pretty good. The wood fired pizza was great, and of course you must try the fresh pastry's! It is worth the stop if you are in the area. I see one of the reviewers on here thinks that the food here is horrible and frozen. I have never once got that impression, and the same person wrote that most of the reviewers must be eating our "RV" food to much! Well when I don't know about any of you, I eat well when I take my RV! Home cooking, and we take our traeger to smoke our meats! I've eaten here every time we drive to the coast for the last several years. The bakery is fantastic, the food is amazing (breakfast lunch AND dinner are notable, each for their own merits) and, if you're on the road as we are, it's the perfect stop for healthy snacks or the not-so-favorable to one's waistline. True homemade food, from scratch with simple, quality ingredients prepared with a modern flair. I had the Boswell Burger with beef from Kneedeep Farms nearby. Mom had the Asian Chicken Salad with chicken that looked like it was: freshly cooked, tender and delicious. The baked goods are well made and the coffee is top notch. Wrap it all up with fine, warm, small town service at its best and it's a must do for anyone on this highway. An oasis in a barren wasteland of soso food. Most come for a pastry. They have a huge selection nowadays from the quick to a meal deal. Meals are good. You might have to keep checking with staff about your meal but it will arrive. There is a great boat ramp and park on the river just a couple blocks away.
