I recently had a very disappointing experience with this company and wanted to share it so others are aware. I called and spoke with Sherry Dorsey after noticing salt underneath my water softener container. She told me it was probably cracked and scheduled a technician to come out and take a look. I asked what it might be, and she again mentioned it could be a crack but said the technician would need to inspect it to confirm. When the technician arrived, I was on a company call, so my son opened the garage and allowed him to inspect the unit. The technician told my son he would take a look, which was completely fine. About 20 minutes later, he handed my son an invoice for $368. My son told me the technician never provided a quote or discussed the cost before completing the repair--he simply gave him the bill. I called Sherry to ask why I was never given a quote before the work was done. Her response was, "Why didn't your son ask how much it would cost? That's what I would have done." In my experience, reputable companies typically provide a quote before performing repairs, without the customer needing to ask. To be clear, I told her I had no issue paying for the service. I simply asked if she could reduce the bill by $68 so we could split part of the labor cost since no quote was provided beforehand. She was very difficult about it and repeatedly insisted that no one had ever questioned their services. I asked one final time if she could reduce half the labor, and if not, I would just pay the full amount. She eventually agreed to charge $300 but stated that they would never perform repairs or services for us again. Considering I originally purchased my water softener from them, the entire interaction was extremely disappointing. It wasn't about avoiding payment--it was about basic communication and customer service. Unfortunately, the way this situation was handled left a very negative impression. read more

I purchased a Tommy Dorsey water softener about 10 yts ago and have never had an issue. The water from the conditioner into the house had slowed down considerably almost down to a trickle. We thought there had to be a catch or it can't really be as good as the expensive ones.....we were wrong!!! He was so very great to work with and we absolutely love our new softener! He even came back out when we thought something was wrong....he spent time working on our tankless water heater which turned out to be clogged with all the residual muck that was in our lines from the old water softener. We used Tommy Dorsey via a neighborhood referral. Several neighbors had used him. They came out, gave us an estimate, which was lower than a chain company but more than HD. They came out, installed, gave instruction and told us to call if we had any questions. We called about month later with a question and they were out within 24 hours to answer our questions. After buying a new home, I realized I needed a water softener. I had considered buying a unit from a nearby big box store and installing myself, and even called a few competitors to get quoted on a softener. One competitor actually quoted a very oversized 70,000 grain unit with filter for over $5,000. After some internet searching, I called Tommy Dorsey Water the day after Christmas. The person who answered the phone asked me a few questions about the size of my home, bathrooms, occupants, etc. and quoted a 32,000 grain Fleck water softener with installation for a very reasonable price (a fraction of the competitors). I was warned they only install the "mechanical" not-so-fancy units without internet connectivity and fancy computers because they tend to last longer. Installation was scheduled for Saturday, only two days away, and I was given a two hour arrival window. Upon arrival within the window, the tech (the owner's son-in-law) apologized that he arrived towards the later end of the window even though he was still well within the time I was told. He answered several questions about the install, and said he would be done within 30 minutes. Sure enough, he was done quickly and showed me how to use the unit. Two bags of salt were included. Workmanship looked excellent. What wasn't included? Upsell. When I asked about getting a carbon filter to make the resin media last longer, I was told I could, but it wasn't really required and i should probably try the softener without the filter for a few months. Just in case, I was given upfront pricing on the cost of replacing the resin (estimated life 8 years with this chlorine level) as well as cost of a carbon filter (just in case we wanted it). I absolutely trust this small business and will happily give them my recommendation and future business. read more

I paid via credit card by phone 19 days ago and my card still hasn't been charged. It is infinitely difficult to find someone to work on water softeners, all other companies I called (and I reached out to at least half a dozen) just wanted to diagnose over the phone and replace the appliance. No thanks. And then I was given a recommendation from another company to call Tommy Dorsey. I was told he's the area expert when it comes to water softeners, and after my service call, I'd have to agree. Tommy was friendly, informative, and very concerned with repairing (NOT replacing) my water softener. I knew absolutely nothing about how it actually worked, and he took the time to show me how to clean it, and to explain potential issues and why they might occur. He didn't actually install my softener but he came round and gave me a quote and told me I would be better using another company that he recommended because my house was not pre-plumbed for a softener. I felt I had to give Tommy a five-star rating even though he did almost no work. He showed up to evaluate my dead water softener and give me options. $250 to fix it, $900 to replace it with a better unit, or do nothing. I elected to do my own work and replace it with a less expensive big box system. He didn't pressure me he put the softener back together and shook my hand and said thank you. I asked him about paying the service charge ($65 which I expected to pay regardless) and he replied that since he didn't really fix it he wouldn't take money. Wow what? I am shocked. I am reconsidering buying the better unit just based on that customer service level. One last note Tommy is one of the few people in town who seems like will work on these units rather than just installs and replacements. read more
