Scammed $285.00 from my elderly dad for an appointment my mom had 12 years ago. My parents have always had premium insurance, so why did the wife of the doctor demand my dad pay $285.00 for an appointment when they NEVER even received a bill! I had been coming to Dr. Chen on and off for well over 10 years. I have always loved Dr. Chen; his bedside manner is amazing and he always knows what to say and do when it comes to any derm issues that I have. My issue is with May his only receptionist. May is unprofessional, nasty & rude. Dr. Chen, you are losing patients because of your unprofessional receptionist! Keep in mind your patient's pay & keep your business afloat with their insurance. I have had to file a grievance with my insurance because she refuses to schedule me although I am in the network. I have the screenshots telling me that she does not accept my insurance and I provided the screenshots that I am in the network. Will never go to Dr. Chen so long as May is there. read more

I had seen Dr Chen in the 90's for hives. Well 30 years later I found myself needing assistance for hives. I was so happy to see that Dr. Chen was still practicing. I called his office and had an appointment a few days later. Dr.Chen'a receptionist was so welcoming and warm and I enjoyed our conversation about the state of healthcare! Dr.Chen came in and as usual kept things simple and I left with a new treatment plan and almost 5 days later and my hives are subsiding!! I can not say enough about my overall experience!! Its hard to find Doctors like Dr. Chen. Funny, smart, nice, and fair. I paid cash for a scalp cyst removal, and not only the procedure was a breeze and painless, the price was fair. I have been continuing treatment with him as my dermatologist. In this half decade I can only say that my respect and appreciation for Dr. Chen has only increased, I owe much to Dr. Chen's excellent care and ability. The chronic condition that plagues me is a malevolent and slippery sort, I have had periods of remission and peace, but it always returns and continues to fight me for control of my life. It has been a painful journey with peak highs and devastating lows, at my worse I lost most lower motor functions due to aggressive expansion of the condition into my joints. Throughout these trials, Dr. Chen never for a moment stopped trying to find solutions to ease my suffering. Medication would eventually weaken due to prolonged use and developed resistance, he would seek other alternatives, helping me navigate the complex bureaucracies of medical insurance companies and pharmacies to allow me to receive the expensively out of reach treatments I so desperately needed. At every step he was there to help, despite his demanding schedule and already exhausting most of his time and energy with the vast amount of patients he must treat every day, he takes time at the end of his workday away from his own rest to follow up with me by phone to ensure my medication deliveries and insurance was in order to avoid what could be a catastrophic delay in getting the medication on time, allowing for the condition to spread again. Today as I write this I can walk again for the most part, I have reasserted control over my life which I at a point had not dared hoped to again and it is thanks in no small part to Dr. Chen's care. I can say with confidence that Dr. Chen is among those few doctors who go beyond mere "professionalism" and truly embraces what should be the core value of any medical professional, "Primum non nocere". read more

I have been a patient of Dr.Chens for almost 30 years. My mother struggled with rosacea/adult acne when I was a child, and would frequently take me with her to Dr. Appointments. I can still remember when I was a kid... He would always talk to me and engage and make me laugh. When I was 9, I developed a big scar on my lip (my damn cat scratched me and scratched me GOOD) and he started treatments on my lip to shave down the scar. To this day, I owe him everything for that alone, as there is no longer a scar. As time went on, I struggled with teenage acne. He was always patient and would comfort me as I cried and talk me through my frustrations. About 15 years later after that, I myself developed rosacea/adult acne... But now had an adult life and schedule... And his office has always been very accomadating to me. I have seen him at all his offices.. And was happy when he moved to Whittier as I live in long beach. Ive never, ever had the billing issues others have spoken of... But I have been a cash patient since I was 21. For me, Dr Chen is more like a family friend. I have literally been in his office whining to him about my life and he always just listens lol. He is extremely knowledgeable about conditions of the skin. Growing up I had scabies, bouts of eczema, mysterious patches of hair missing... And he always has a solution and I'm always very happy when I leave his office. Even with my rosacea.. He was honest- he said "I can prescribe you creams and pills that will just frustrate you... But with this condition it really is about life style changes.." And he was 100% correct. As soon as I identified my "triggers".. My condition pretty much went into remission. I still have bad times, where my skin will flip out.. But one walk back into his office and all is fine in a matter of days. And those moments are very few and far between. But the biggest thing with it, is for it to not get worse. That is what haooens when the condition is not addressed. So yeah.. He could push all these meds on me, but he doesn't. And I myself appreciate doctors like that... They are what I prefer and what works for me-just an honest doctor. My moms skin has been in remission for over 2o years.. Her skin looks amazing. And she even says she has him to thank. I'm moving out of state next year.. But I still plan to have his as my only derm until he retires. Hes amazing. Please dont retire soon, Dr Chen! read more

The woman in the front office is incredibly rude. Both of my children are patients at this office. I came in to be seen for a rash and she said I needed to pay out of pocket because she did not have the time to verify my insurance, which is the same as my children's insurance so obviously this office takes it, as it has been billed by them successfully on numerous occasions. It is her job to be pleasant and helpful. She is nothing of the sort. I then asked if I would be reimbursed once the insurance was verified and she responded to me that "this office does not keep my money", as if I was accusing her of stealing from me when I was simply asking a logical question. Perhaps it is a language barrier but I have only had bad experiences with her and now will be finding a new dermatologist because of her attitude and rudeness. Dr Chen has always been nice but I can't deal with her any longer. read more

We were first recommended to Dr. Chen in 2002 for a horrible never ending acne problem for my son. My son was very depressed and upset about the acne. We tried all the antibiotics and creams prescribed by his primary doctor, nothing worked. We were sent to Dr. Chen for the Accutane treatment. He was very good at explaining the process to us, and monitoring him monthly. My son's acne cleared up and his personality changed, he was always smiling and not hiding his face. He treated my son for Tinea Versicolor a few years ago as well. I took my brother into see him about bad fungus on his nails and toenails. He treated my brother for about 6mths to a year, and it cleared up. He really is that good! I have recommended him to many people over the years. His staff is super nice also. He has an office in Whittier and also in Pasadena. If you want an honest Doctor that is skilled in his profession, this is the one to see. read more
