I've been coming here since i was 13 years old. I absolutely adore this establishment! A true local joint. Everything is good! I love the PuPu platter and the dim sum! Very fresh! But mainly i'll order the orange chicken with brown rice. If i order from the dim sum menu, I'll always get the Steamed rice w/ chicken wrapped in lotus leaf. It sounds strange but it's hella good! So i really recommend that if you do stop by! For lunch and Dinner, they always serve sweet & sour soup, fried rice, steam rice & noodles! On top of your ordered meal - Usually $8-$10 for your dish, w/ the extra food they add. So that's really a deal! A lot of Chinese restaurants serve the steamed rice, fried rice & noodles separately, or costs extra to add all three. So definitely 5 star for that! *I believe its a family owned and run restaurant. So, it adds more points in my book because they put Quality over quantity. Also they have great service & they tended to my every request. I brought my friend once and she is allergic to walnuts in the prawns and walnut dish. Instead, they substituted it for cashews. How nice of them, even though the dish is called Walnuts and prawns, haha. Anyways, fast service. Big family portions, that the Asian cultures are known for, so they definitely live up to that. Try to be there early, they have big lines out the door during lunch time. So either arrive early or call in to pre-order your food to beat the time. *Also, the back patio is conveniently right next to Wells fargo if your short on cash or to get cash quick. Also the parking lot in the back helps a lot! But i love to dine out on the patio because they have cute outdoor curb appeal. Very zen, during a meal :) Furthermore, Tommy's wok is a good place my family and I agree on. Especially an Asian family that moved out of San Francisco, Chinatown. This restaurant feels like home. I loved the prawns and the first time I ate here it was great. This last time I got stale and dry duck (which I told the waitress about) she had no concern. The sizzling rice soup had to be returned as it tasted lie pure salt. The waitress said I should have asked for light salt. I told her NOBODY could consume the soup unless they ordered heavy salt which never happens. Anyway they exchanged that part and the second batch (though still quite salty) was edible.Even my fortune cookie was stale. This was a great lesson though as I am a local business who had referred a few clients to Tommy Wok. It is very important that I don't refer anyone else and in fact warn my clients about the high price and less than adequate food. I can understand the good reviews too as I too had good food there. Like I said maybe it was a new or fill in cook. They should be a lot more careful, especially when serving locals if they want to stay in business. A very conventional Chinese/American menu and very conventional cooking as well. Some of the items like fried rice, seem as if they were made up early and then reheated or microwaved as required during the day. The orange chicken is good, but this is such a simple dish that it's almost impossible to screw up. It's very low priced for Carmel, but it isn't the place to go for any great discoveries either. The potstickers are good but steer away from the sweet and sour. Service is ok, just nothing special. Carmel isn't the place to go for good Chinese. read more

I have to say I may not be eating there again. As always the food was great.... however they got our order wrong and we returned the entree to them. Instead of just letting us have it and correcting order. They took it and placed on the counter. With covid it should either have been thrown away immediately or just given back to us. I got back in car and thought...hmmmm. So I called them back and made clear we had opened the container and they could hardly talk to us. One of the few good Chinese places on the Peninsula-and right in downtown Carmel. Now that is a surprise. The prices are pretty reasonable for Carmel, the location at Mission and Ocean can't be beat if you are wandering around and don't want to spend a fortune, and the food is excellent. Now this isn't San Jose or San Francisco, so you should't expect five stars, but it is certainly way ahead of all of the other Chinese places we have tried from Marina to Carmel. Terrible restaurant for vegetarians. I saw this place on yelp before going on my vacation to Carmel and read great things. I even checked their menu and saw an entire section that was titled "Vegetarian" but when we got there, while attempting to order, the waiter told us that the chow mein and fried rice were cooked in some sort of chicken broth leaving us with only the veggie egg rolls and fried tofu to eat. Do not order the dim sum here! I repeat...do not order dim sum here! You are welcome. Came here sunday afternoon for brunch. 80% full, everyone was ordering the combo plates. I should have known not to order dim sum, but my craving overcame my logic. Ordered dim sum...big mistake. Did not taste like dim sum, lets just leave it at that. Tommy's Wok is excellent! I stopped in here recently and tried the braised tofu with vegetable. It was amazing. All of their food was fresh and delicious. They use only the best ingredients obviously. We also ordered the prawns with black bean sauce, which was absolutely delicious. The food was piping hot when it came to our table, and everything was prepared very well-perfectly seasoned. The service is great. I love this place, and will definitely be back. Well it's better than most of the Chinese places on the Peninsula, but still not what you can get off the Peninsula. It has all of the standard choices that you would expect in a decent Chinese place, all of the sweet and sour, all of the rice dishes, this chicken and that chicken, etc. All decently prepared. Just no great surprises. In San Francisco, it would definitely be a 3 star, down here it's a 4 star if you are desperate for Chinese like we are. read more

Very nice and cozy little chinese restaurant thats tuck in the city of Carmel...a little bit hard to find but its right behind Wells fargo...the food was good but not the best...they also serve some of the favorites dim sum dish...the price is really reasonable considering is downtown Carmel...the service was great...we really enjoyed it especially after the meal you get to explore the magnificient downtown Carmel within walking distance. read more

I have no idea on the food quality here. However, before you eat here walk into the kitchen and just look around. Look at the floor, look at the insect stations taped to the walls. Look at the stoves, there is 3/4" of old nasty grease caked on. I promise you that you will go straight for the exit. You be the judge, but none of this is lies or exaggeration. This is a tiny place, but the portions were generous and the food--we ordered hot and sour soup, garlic spinach, spicy string beans and mu shu--was great. The mu shu did come with tortillas instead of the normal wraps, which was off putting, but totally worked. Definitely a good spot for a reasonably priced meal in Carmel. read more

I just moved from LA and heard about this place in Carmel, so I decided to check it out, and OMG! The Mongolian beef is to die for, very well done. Best Chinese food in a long time. I have had tommy's about 20 times and it is so up and down, I had excellent food there a month ago so was excited to go back. Best place for Chinese in Carmel. Delicious food and a definite for the staple Chinese take out. My favorite is the orange chicken and the fried rice. A friend who grew up in Monterey always exclaims it is a historical part of Carmel where all families go for their Chinese. Sure, if you love Chinese, why not? read more

My husband and i are extremely picky when it comes to Chinese food and we are crazy for tommys wok! Great quality food the Mongolian beef was AMAZING! My only complaint is that it is a really small restaurant so we can't go with a group of friends, but other than that i would highly recommend trying it out read more
