There was this spunky, short brunette lady that waitressed here forever, but i have not seen her in many years. She was THE BEST WAITRESS! Friendly, fun, always cheerful and happy to help. She always made sure every meal had the best service possible. I miss her. I think her name was Diane. Not a single waitress since has compared. You really need to find more like her! read more

Don't let the outside fool you. What a huge, fresh, tasty lunch was whipped up today. My husband had a chicken gyro with side salad and half pickle while I ordered this Cobb salad. It was almost 3, their closing time, yet no one rushed us. Bottom line- As regular visitors to Portland we recommend Toms restaurant for lunch. Not the Petit Provence, a touristy place. We came on a Sunday morning and there was no wait to be seated, which was a positive! We ordered breakfast for two, I had the Eggs Benedict special posted on the chalkboard and my boyfriend had one of their "No. 3" items off the menu, the standard eggs hashbrowns and bacon with toast. The first red flag was the sticker on the menu regarding a 75c surcharge PER EGG and we let that go because prices were so low but when the eggs came out they were over done. The eggs in my Benedict were BOILED not poached and I found hair The only good parts here were the bacon, hashbrowns, and atmosphere/service (which was lowkey). We got what we needed but we will not be coming back here or recommending it to others. read more

Update: I returned to Tom's and ordered two bacon and egg breakfasts ($11.75 each) and two coffees ($3.00 each, according to the menu). The same waitress I mentioned in my earlier review served us, and I want to acknowledge that she provided good service this time, friendly, attentive, and she seemed to "happily" refill our coffees. However, when the bill came, it was $32.50 with no itemization. I added a modest $4.00 tip, because the total seemed off. Once I got home and did the math, I realized it should have been $29.50. As it is, it appears I paid a total of a 7.00 "tip" on what should have been a 29.50 bill. The breakfast itself was very good, but I'm really done with Tom's this time. I value transparency, and unexplained overcharges are a dealbreaker. read more

I've been going to Tom's for years. Today is the last time. This place has really gone down hill. It's a toilet. After being told they were out of Burgers. I ordered a Cobb Salad. An overpriced Cobb salad. I was served rusty lettuce and old smelly vegetables. When I complained the waitress could have cared less. I asked for a discount on the bill. She came back and gave me a card for $10.00. I told her I wasn't going to come back, as I don't trust the food, she said too bad, that's all I can do. I won't be back. The food is awful. Most Bartenders and Servers here act as if you are inconveniencing them for even being there and make it obvious which patrons are their friends and the ones they like, and the friend bias is overpowering. The Bartenders are not sly or subtle when they do not approve of you or do not like you. This place actually caused me to want to stay home 24/7 and not ever enjoy food out at a restaurant or bar as a single female, especially someone that actually started enjoying life outside and not as a shut-in. At least I will be saving more money, I was a regular orderer of their New York Steak & Eggs, but apparently my personality was not good enough for them to receive money for that meal 3-4 days a week. Not one person has taken the time to even ask me one personal question, yet they determined I was not worthy, because they were obvious they preferred I was not there. I am very happy with the quality of the food the delivery of warm food in the last 2 x times they're hitting 100. The food is good and the prices great! I had an omelette and my daughter banana pancakes. The omelette was fluffy and it came with hash browns and choice of bread or 2 pancakes. The banana pancakes were fluffy with fresh banana slices, butter and syrup. Our waitress was quick, friendly, and attentive. Highly recommend! The tomelette was so delicious and unique I've had plenty of omelettes and gyros but never together and honestly would of never thought the two would pair together but with the Tzatziki sauce and and gyro meat coming together with the eggs and veggies it was perfect. I've ordered takeout from this place the last 2 times we have eaten out - both times delivered by GH and both times the food was not piping hot. I live far from the spot so the temp is understandable - a quick zap and we are ready to eat! I love breakfast for dinner and Toms does it right! Our little group of four ladies popped in here for lunch on a Wednesday.the restaurant is attached to Tom's Bar with an open access point inside but it's also got separate entrances. I had the chili and cheese omelet. This was a dish served at a diner near where I grew up in New Jersey. I was already very happy to have found another restaurant that has this dish, after looking for literally years. In addition, the eggs were so fluffy, the chili tasted exactly as I remembered it from the restaurant near where I grew up, and I loved the addition of the sour cream. This was something the other restaurant did not do, but I liked it because it made me feel like I was eating an actual bowl of chili, which was also an omelet. I like the waitresses, the breakfst choices and the gyros. The service is fast, the portions are generous and the waitress is honest about what's good. Its like walking into an older time at an old fashioned corner diner. Its homey and comfortable. And you don't have to usually wait too long even when it is busy. The customers are often regulars. The prices are more than reasonable. I really recommend the gyro and ask for some feta to go with it. The waitresses there don't get their noses out of joint when you ask for a special request...like a bisquit instead of toast with your breakfast. To say this place is a breath of normalcy in a city of hipster crap would be unfair, Portland is a real place with real people from many different walks of life and backgrounds, and there are lots of different styles of restaurants, but sometimes just going into a normal breakfast place is just phenomenal. No avocado toast, no mediterranean breakfast, no vegan fritatta, no breakfast sashimi, no silliness needed. No bad ideas. Nothing over the price of 10 bucks. Wait what?? 10 bucks?? Tom's is a breakfast joint with great omelettes, passable coffee, ample seating, deliciously perfect pancakes and prices so low it's amazing. There's a great counter, lots of booths, there is a adjoining bar, it looks like a proper divy operation, my bar days are mostly behind me, but if the bar is as good as the restaurant then it very well could be a great spot. That said they have giant pint sized delicious looking Bloody Mary's, even though the place doesn't look like a place with Bloodys. We didn't partake. It says they opened in 1975, and I don't think they changed much of anything, including their prices. Place is flat out amazingly cheap. read more

I'm giving him four stars mainly because everyone there was nice, and the service was fast. They have two sections one section is the diner and the second section is the bar. We sat in the diner. It felt like we were at Denny's. There was nothing special about the diner except the friendliness of the service. I took a quick look inside the bar which was a large and spacious with many TVs. I don't know what assortment of beer they have. We came here to try the Impossible Burger which was okay. It needed a lot more flavoring, and they didn't have any vegan sauce to put on top of it. Since we were visiting, we tried looking for a place for brunch that is close by and affordable. This place fits the bill completely. I'd rather go here to eat my breakfast than any other place around town. I did however experience a pretty hefty wait time as well as the waitress forgetting to take our order but honestly, it wasn't that big of a deal. The service from the waitresses is excellent and made me feel welcomed. They are very attentive which I like. Whole place was neat, cozy, clean and also packed when I went. They have a nice selection of menu items, nothing special but affordable delicious food mostly around 12$ and under. I got an omelet, decent amount of hash browns, toast, and lots of coffee for 10$.
