Love this place! I've been there three times now and service was always prompt and friendly. I love the menu, especially how it's so vegetarian friendly and offers many gluten free options. They also have a great drink menu, both alcoholic and non alcoholic. Now for food! I really love the countryside potato rice. So filling and comforting. I'd highly recommend getting the soft egg with it (add on for $3). The carrot salad is refreshing and flavorful. My daughter had the fried tofu sandwich. While visiting our daughter we were recommended Miss Kim as a dinner spot. Miss Kim did not disappoint. The menu offers a variety of dishes. We opted to share a few dishes to include the beet avocado salad, the fried chicken, the ribs, crispy broccolini and the street style tteokbokki. Our whole table enjoyed each dish. The sauces were the right level of spicy and the meat was tender. The soy butter rice was a stand out. My wife says "that is the best rice I've ever had." I enjoyed a Makku with my meal. It's a tasty Korean rice beer. We made reservations and were seated not too long after our arrival. The restaurant offers plenty of seating to include a small bar area, and has a vibrant atmosphere. We very much enjoyed our meal and our server at Miss Kim. The reason for the four stars is it is too expensive for the overall experience at $165 for two people with tips and beverage. For apps, we ordered the radish kimchi and the lotus root with cashew and both were excellent. For our mains we ordered the glazed fried chicken and the fried cauliflower dish. Both were respectable and enjoyable dishes, but nothing memorable. I ordered the bourbon smash which is slightly sweet and a decent drink. The atmosphere and vibe of the place is pretty fun and the servers are very attentive. It is in a nice walkable part of Kerrytown. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet, this was our 3rd or 4th time here. It's been a while since we don't have the time to sit down at a nice restaurant very often when we're in Ann Arbor but this was a fine choice this time around. The food here is so fresh and classic Korean with a little twist sometimes. It's the perfect balance of salty, spicy, umami in every bite. We had the radish kimchi and carrot salad to start (carrot salad is on the house these days). Both were really good. Crunchy and spicy. Next we had the lotus roots with soy nuts on top. These are one of the absolute favorites that we tried last time and had to get again this time. Salty, crunchy, nutty, yum! After that we got the Street Style Tteokbokki which has the egg on it. This was delicious, chewy and crispy rice batons with a spicy sauce and creamy egg and lardons. We got the royale style the time before and it was also amazing! We finished off last time and this time with the Korean fried chicken where we get the soy glaze on it and a bowl of the spicy sauce on the side so that my eating companion and I can adjust the spice to our liking. This is absolutely the best and a must get! And either my spice tolerance is up or they adjusted the spice down, but it was absolutely perfect this time around. We also opted for the soy butter rice this time which was good but almost too rich for me. My eating companion said this was the best, but I'm on the fence. I think it could use more soy and less butter. We don't get any desserts this time around but I did get the kpop demon hunters themed "gonna be golden" hot toddy with apricot brandy and it was perfect for the cold winter day. Service is always exceptional here, being as it's associated with Zingermans so the staff are well trained, attentive and knowledgeable, and food comes out perfect. Kind of a "fast food" vegan style rice/noodle spot next to Kim's - the sit down and from what I understand, white table cloth kind of restaurant. One of the warmer days in February and able to sit on patio to watch passer by. They bring food to you after ordering at front counter. This was my second time here and it's kind of telling I had zero recollection of the first. Service was rough on a Wednesday night. A reservation was definitely necessary to be seated, so don't sleep on that! Somehow a couple got seated next to us a while after we arrived, ordered, were served their meal, finished and left all before we got our check. It was weird. Preferred customers or...? My partner's cocktail also sat on the bar and melted for a good 10+ minutes before being brought to our table. I almost just grabbed it on my way back from the bathroom. Food was all good but nothing really blew us away. The Korean fried chicken was pretty fire (get the chili glaze). I was excited to try the special miso butter rice but found it bland. The broccolini in caramel fish sauce was another favorite. Smashed potatoes cooked well and the seasoning is like crack. Tteokbokki was nicely soft and crispy on the outside, but the egg was kind of pointless because it just slid off and lingered on the plate. I really wanted to love this place lol To start we ordered broccolini with caramel fish sauce and it was very surprising. The smell of it comes off strongly of fish sauce but the sweetness of the caramel balances it out. Flavor comes in these packed waves as most of the sauce is concentrated in the head bushels which are soft and charred while the cashews and blanched stems give a bouncy crunch, really texturally pleasing. Then came the bibimbap, very standard but well done veggies and protein, but the gochujang sauce had more depth than most. The thing that stood out to me was the rice, typically in stone pot rice bowls that layer gets burnt with how hot it gets but in this one it was barely browned but still really crispy, I have a feeling they cooked the bottom layer on low heat first to dry it out without burning the rice? Nice touch. Lastly the korean fried chicken plate. The soy rice was subtly umami packed and the chicken had that sticky finger licking sauce and crunch you'd expect. My only real problem was that the pieces were so large that the middle of the chicken were pretty dry and unflavorful. Personally I would have preferred smaller chicken pieces or maybe if the chicken had been brined. Overall everything was seasoned perfectly and felt like a very healthy and delicious meal. WOW! This spot is fantastic! We showed up with a party of four and a reservation on a Friday night, I'd highly recommend a reservation or I'm not sure you'll get in. I made a reservation to eat at Miss Kim on a Monday night, and I think I'm glad I did--I'm not sure it was strictly necessary but the restaurant was definitely bustling even on the first night of the week. After placing orders for drinks (rose, cava and a bee's knees cocktail) we received a complimentary dish of a carrot salad that was bright and delicious. For an appetizer, we shared the cauliflower which was coated in a light, crispy batter and came with an excellent dipping sauce. For an entree, I ordered the street style tteokbokki. I first ordered the small dish, but after talking with the server, upgraded to large. I'm glad I did, it was a more satisfying meal at that size. The rice cakes were tender inside, crispy on the exterior and coated in a spicy but not too spicy sauce. Delicious! Our server didn't seem super comfortable with some sections of the menu, but overall service was friendly, efficient and accurate. Went here a couple weeks ago for dinner. We made a reservation which is definitely a must. Also it is a great versatile spot to go with a small group or just one other person. Get a bunch of things to share, this is what they will recommend and what you should do. We started with the sweet chili ribs, the rice cakes, and they bring out some kimchis; these were all so good I would recommend both, but the rice cakes were the star of the whole meal for me. They were delicious, I would go back for just those. Everything was not too spicy but definetly had some heat and so much flavor. We then moved on to the duck which is served with sauce, lettuce cups and kimchi. We also got the beef bibimbop. I would reccomend the bibimbop over the duck but both were good that's just preference. This is served with a side of regular or butter rice; reccomend the buttered, it is flavored with other things and so soft. This was a good amount of food for 3 people, maybe even just tiniest bit too much. Everything was so good, I cannot say it enough. About the service...this is the only reason I took off a star. Our waitress prefaced that she was knew that's why I didn't think this was a big deal, however, she was quite annoying. She talked for at least 5 minutes every time she came by the table and directly after we sat down she came over 3 times to try and take our order and then when we were actually ready she was no where to be found. This was the only thing to take away from the meal especially because it infiltrated our topic of conversation when that should never be the case. Miss Kim has been on my list for years. They've been named on the James Beard Foundation list of Restaurant and Chef Awards for several years and Chef Ji Hye Kim was listed as Best New Chef by Food and Wine magazine in 2021. So my expectations were pretty high. I didn't know a ton about the food going in except it was some kind of Korean. It's a bit of traditional and some fusion. I would recommend a reservation; we went on an off-peak weekday so were seated right away. The space isn't huge, it's tucked in with Kerrytown Market. The menu was full of stuff I wanted to try and our server was kind and helpful which was great for our first visit. One thing I loved the most about Miss Kim were the "chef's notes" on the menu; personal stories and anecdotes about some of their menu items. We ordered the cacio e pepe tteokbokki and the Korean fried tofu with a side of kimchi. Our server recommended the soy butter rice to go with the tofu. Nate also ordered a makgeolli, which is a Korean rice wine. We were surprised with some carrot salad and crispy potato banchan. The carrot salad was interesting as it had a lot of cumin and the potatoes were tasty with a sweet and salty spice mixture. The kimchi was brought to our table and I was a little alarmed at the amount - it was listed on the menu as $5 and it was like three chunks of napa cabbage kimchi. Definitely wouldn't order that again as I get giant jars of kimchi from my Korean grocery store for way cheaper! I had a little bit of sticker shock for the cacio e pepe tteokbokki as well - I got the small order for $17 and it was maybe 10 pieces. I should've gotten the large order, because it was so good. The tteokbokki were chewy and a bit crisp. I was expecting this dish to be a bit saucier but the cheese and pepper flavors were definitely strong enough. The Korean fried tofu was okay. They use a really soft tofu, which is interesting as the contrast between textures is nice but not exactly the easiest to eat with traditional Korean chopsticks (flat metal). I liked the flavor but I'd probably get something else next time. But that soy butter rice was delicious - I'd eat a whole bowl of just that (topped with a fried egg)! I'm glad we finally checked this place out and I like that they're doing some interesting and fun things while highlighting Korean food. I could not taste anything but whiskey - They offered to make me a new one and they did. But they charged me for both and Only drank one! Second was a LITTLE better but still not balanced. Smashed Potatoes - 4 stars (could be 5) These were very good. But, I just do not see it Korean! Maybe for lunch in lieu of fries. But, they re VERY good! Ambiance: Comfortable seating, a little loud, and friendly environment! So, why the 4 stars: 1) servers (waitress) must be more acquainted with menu and dishes BEFORE they become servers. Our waitress had limited knowledge of menu and its ingredients. 2) Biggest reason for 4 stars - we made it very clear and we had a visit from the kitchen that we could not have sesame seeds in our dishes. Not an allergy but, health issues with sesame seeds. When 3 dishes were delivered (ribs, Tteokbokki, and chicken) all had sesame seeds sprinkled all over the dish. Now in fairness the manager (Claira) came from the kitchen sincerely apologized and gave us a nice reduction in bill. If it was not for her, we would be having a far different review. 3) Not impressed with cocktails. At the prices being charged this should be a far better experience. One last comment, ALL the rice has sesame seeds. Why not have some plain white or brown rice available for those like me who have dietary challenges. One shout out to Clara - Nice job! What better time to try new places and get a reservation than before all the students return to campus? We had to move our daughter into her new place a few weeks before fall classes started. Usually we go to Culver's because we needed to stay flexible dining. This place has been on my list for a while and we finally got to go. There is only street parking. The restaurant is located in a complex. The dining room is very cool with all the artwork. There is a bar inside. I think there is community table dining as well. I took my son here when we were visiting Ann Arbor. I lived in NYC for almost 30 years eating Korean food multiple times a week, have been to Seoul many times and consider myself a Korean food junkie. Thoroughly disappointed in this experience. The bulgogi bi bim bap was tasteless. Literally had nothing. Their version of gochujang (the spicy paste you usually mix in Bi Bim Bap), was more of an oil and added hardly any flavor. My son had the Kalbi and he said it was ok. Not great, just ok. Tack this on top of the fact it took 40 min to get our food while others who came after us got theirs, and the second server who came over to say our food was next got pissy when I pointed out that she's the second person in 20 min to say that, and you have an all around forgettable experience. Stopped in for a late lunch at Miss Kim on a Saturday afternoon around 2 p.m. A few tables were filled, but it wasn't overly busy. I sat in the dining room--nice, but nothing fancy, with tables packed pretty close together. I ordered a housemade ginger soda, which was really good: sweet with a kick of ginger spice. For lunch, I had the Korean fried chicken sandwich with a side of napa kimchi. The kimchi was great--nothing super unique, but a solid traditional dish. The sandwich, though--I honestly had higher hopes. It was tasty, but the sauce was a bit too sweet, the chicken was oddly dry/tough in one spot, and the roll was kind of dry. It definitely sounded better on the menu than it was in execution. I'd also recommend eating it with a knife and fork; it's quite messy. It's not really an authentic, homestyle Korean dish place but rather a restaurant to try Korean inspired dishes with a funky twist. Out of the snacks, I tried the smashed potatoes, which were crushed potatoes that were tossed with chili flakes, pepper, salt, and sugar. They didn't really hit the nostalgia I was having for Korean street style 통감자, but still were tasty. The Buddhist lotus roots were delicious. You don't find lotus roots a lot so whenever I see a dish with them, I have to try! It had toasted cashews, dwenjang (soy bean paste) and green pepper sauce on top for added flavor. The sweet chili baby back ribs were very tender and the sweet chili glaze was slightly spicy and good. It also came with a side of pickled radish for a refreshing flavor boost. As for entrees, the Cacio e Pepe Tteokbokki was one of the dishes I was most excited to try but was unfortunately a bit too salty. The beef stone bowl bibimbap also missed the mark because of the addition of fresh veggies, which ended up getting soggy and cooked because of the heat of the stone pot. It would have been great to have traditional Korean marinated spinach or gosari namul, which are already cooked so the texture is preserved a bit more. The beef also reminded me of a steak bowl more than bibimbap. The Korean fried chicken was decent but a bit on the pricier side, much like their other dishes. I liked that they did have lots of veggie options as well like their chili glazed fried tofu and mushroom and tofu bowls. I also really liked their range of drink choices including traditional Korean drinks like sujeongwa (Korean cinnamon punch) and plum soda. The server was very nice and attentive! I also love how they are on a mission to give back to the community by delivering a meal to families in need with a portion of their proceeds. Three words. Korean. Friend. Tofu. Are there only five pieces of tofu on the plate? Yeah. But not only is tofu silly filling on its own, when deep fried it's even more so. My favorite way to enjoy this dish is to skip the sauces and opt for the Korean spice blend to be showered over the impossibly crispy cubes of pillowy light tofu. That blend is made from Korean red chili pepper flakes, sesame seeds, and salt. Ask for extra on the side, because its seriously delicious and addictive. Plus you can bring home any spice powder that remains, and use it as a popcorn topping. Thank me later. But it helps to bring a bunch of people with you, so you can share plates and have a bit of everything. Vegetables are especially good, like the aggressively seasoned fish caramel broccolini. If there is a menu item that offers in season veggies, don't think twice, just order it. One of my favorite bites was the complimentary banchan of shredded carrots, spiced with coriander and cumin. So bright. So refreshing. So well balanced. However, I think the most profound compliment I can share about Miss Kim is that my wife who has traditionally veered clear of Korean restaurants loved it! She dislikes cabbage in addition to the smell of traditional kimchi. But the tofu and the Royale Style Tteokbokki won her over (in addition to the tofu and broccolini). I am especially impressed that Miss Kim uses a home made rice cake for this dish. More than anything, I'm looking forward to trying the bao, but they have been off the menu on all of my visits. I've heard hype about Miss Kim for a long time and was very excited to eat there. I was surprised the food was meh. We had a very eager server who refreshed our water regularly and brought food quickly, and the ambience was quite appealing, but very noisy. The Korean fried chicken tasted like a more spicy version of General Tso, and the sesame rice was plain white rice with a few sesame seeds in it. The Soju was served in single shot portions and not a bottle for $6. The Cacio E Pepe Tteokbokk was interesting but very dry with no sauce. The smashed potatoes were deliciously spiced.
