It's a cute small facility, I always get greeted and seated right away. I like coming here for their lunch special which start at 11:30 to 2:30. I can order A bowl of Tonkotsu Ramen where I can make it regular or spicy. I always like a little kick to my food. You get a choice of bulgogi, chicken, spicy tuna, and poke bowl as your option for your side. I already get the bulgogi beef bowl. It very good, I usually take it to go because I want to enjoy my bowl of ramen. For an extra 5$ you can do a pint of beer of your choice. I always get Sapporo because it supplement the food really well. I would definitely recommend this place if you are hungry and you need a drink during lunch. read more

Stopped for lunch with my friend and found this spot to feed our sushi craving. We each ordered a bulgogi cup bob and shared the tiger roll and spicy cucumber side dish. The cup bob we thought came with both rice and noodles, but I think it was one or the other which did not align with what the menu stated. No big deal though. There was lots in the bowl and filling. The roll was good, had a little surprise in the last end piece when I found a bit of shrimp tail shell still attached to the shrimp tempura I didn't see tail pieces so my assumption was the shrimps did not have tail shells attached, otherwise the sushi roll was good! Spicy cucumbers were not spicy, coming from someone with a very low spice tolerance. The sauce was so good, I gladly would put that on my cup bob, which enhanced the combo of meat and rice. So sorry to have to downgrade my original review. Had a pretty good experience the first time here but this time, the food was quite lacking. Chicken wings were overcooked, dry, and the garlic soy tasted weak. Worst of all, I think the wings were frozen after marinating since they had a freezer taste. Tempura udon - broth had no depth, only sweet soy. And only two pieces of over battered shrimp tempura, no veggies, nothing. Bulgogi beef rice bowl - Rice was overcooked and the beef was dry, almost like beef jerky. Tongkatsu ramen - This was good the first time I was here but today, it was tasteless. The char siu was overly tough. Dragon roll - This was the only decent dish today relative to everything else. Don't think I'll be back. It has been a while since I visited this establishment. My first review was many years ago when they first opened and I gave them 4 stars...well they are now 5 stars in my book. Excellent service and staff is super friendly. Ordered and food started rolling out shortly after placing my order. Restaurant is clean and kid friendly. They have plenty of high chairs available if you have kids. We had the tonkotsu ramen which my family devoured (including my 4 and 2 year old). We also had a couple of rolls for the adults. Tasted delicious and fresh. Very satisfied that they have asahi on draft with a nice sake selection. Will return soon. read more

As a fellow Korean, I was excited to find Tong Sake House! It's a small restaurant (maybe 8 tables) within a shopping complex in Poway serving Korean fusion food. What makes it 5 stars? - the customer service was excellent. Our server was prompt, friendly, and professional. She checked in regularly and our food came out within a reasonable time frame. - the food was tasty, fresh, and packed with flavor. The tofu salad is a MUST. The tofu is lightly fried in tempura batter so the outside is crispy but the inside is soft tofu. The kimchi udon was the perfect meal for a cold night. - reasonable prices for the large portion of food (one entree is plenty) - easy and plenty of parking in the lot I will definitely be back to try some more items! read more

Tried this place with my friend and it was alright. It seems to be a combination of Korean and Japanese. My friends ordered the chicken karrage , fried Gyoza, tong crew ramen, protein roll and the Del Mar roll. I ordered the lemon cilantro roll. We shared the gyoza and chicken karrage. The gyozas were okay. Nicely fried, but the chicken karrage was the best I've had since leaving Japan! Great flavor and nicely breaded. My friend's ramen was a bit more peppery and less flavorful than a tonkatsu usually is.. the lemon cilantro roll was underwhelming and the protein roll was pretty boring. I think the deal mar roll with the seared tuna was actually pretty good. Overall the place was just kind of missed the mark for me.. My husband and I usually come for a bowl for lunch. We decided to take our adult son here for dinner and it was very good. I got my standard ahi rice bowl that is packed with ahi, cucumber, edamame, seaweed and avocado. Very tasty and large enough that I rarely finish it. My husband had a combo spicy tuna rice bowl and noodle bowl which he devoured and enjoyed. Our son ordered 2 cut rolls, also great size portion, and did not finish one. The service is always outstanding and the food comes out in a timely manner. They have very very basic sushi they do, and NO HAMACHI, or kama's. Just cali rolls, and the basics. If you want Korean, maybe this is a better option. The eel came out cold, which I hate and was very over powered by sweeter than normal eel sauce. The avocado was nice and fresh but it just set the meal off on a bad foot when I realized the eel wasn't freshly heated and therefore the rest of the food wouldn't be either. Next came the shrimp tempura roll. And lo and behold...the shrimp was ice cold. Ugh. A good shrimp tempura roll is one of the best bites of sushi you can have. The warm shrimp in contrast with the cold and crisp seaweed is so satisfying...and a BAD shrimp tempura roll is something I would only serve to my enemies. I stopped by Tong Sake House for dinner after completing a nearby hike earlier in the afternoon. This is a small restaurant located in a strip mall off Poway Road. At the time, the menu selections were limited to one page and featured starters, ramen, udon, rice bowls, and some sushi rolls. The place was about 3/4 full during my visit so I sat at the bar. I began with an order of takoyaki which came as four octopus fritters covered with benito flakes. The shaved dried tuna was generously applied over the octopus balls. For my entrée, I got a bowl of tonkotsu ramen in mild broth with extra noodles. The soup did seem rather oily as shown in my photo. Nice , small Korean Japanese fusion restaurant. There's usually not a wait, in my experience, and it has a large parking lot. Service is a bit slow and you'll have to ask if you want more water or anything. The food did come out pretty quickly though. I've been here a few times so this is what I've tried: Oh Hiya Ramen - 5/5, their cold ramen is a must have. It's a good portion size and it also comes with a salad and pickles on the side. It's a unique dish with good flavors in the noodles mixed with the bulgogi on top. KB Yakisoba - 3.5/5, it's okay; it tastes like kimchi fried rice, but I'd rather get the kimchi fried rice than this. I was expecting it to taste more like a traditional Yakisoba just with kimchi and bacon added in. Also, there wasn't a lot of bacon. Tonkotsu Ramen - 2/5, would not get again. It's definitely not like any traditional ramen. The broth was okay but the chashu tasted like ham and I wasn't a fan of the spinach. Takoyaki - 4/5, pretty good. Oh Hiya Ramen - I've gotten the cold ramen for takeout probably close to a dozen times in the 2+ years I've lived in Poway. It's really good; a simple creamy sesame sauce, beef bulgogi, pickled cucumbers, half a soft boiled egg, and a refreshing side salad. The portion sizes for takeout feel much smaller than the amount you get at the restaurant though. Beef Japchae Bowl - My other go-to order, a mix of flavorful japchae, purple rice, and bulgolgi with a side of pickled cucumbers as well. Filling and satisfying. (Spicy) Tonkatsu Ramen - I've tried both the spicy and non-spicy, go elsewhere for tonkatsu. The broth wasn't very flavorful, the chashu tasted like ham, and the noodles were nothing special. Edible to me but my girlfriend really didn't like it. Go to Mira Mesa/Convoy St. instead. KB Fries - Tasty, big portion, it's hard to mess up loaded fries. Parmesan Fries - Fries with parmesan shavings. Good. :) KB Yakisoba - It's okay. It tastes exactly like you think it might: kimchi fried rice except noodles instead of rice. I think that kimchi fried rice flavor goes with rice better. KB Fried Rice - Better than the yakisoba but also nothing too special. Kimchi fried rice goes better with spam or thick pork belly slices imo. Takoyaki - I don't eat takoyaki much so I can't really say if it's good or not... tastes like takoyaki to me! Chicken Karaage - Small bites of fried chicken, more akin to popcorn chicken. Tasty appetizer but not as good as the Karaage from most ramen places. In terms of the service, I've never had an issue with takeout. When dining in, service can be slow due to being understaffed. Expect to have to wave down a (or sometimes the only) server to get water or the bill. Food comes out quick though and all the staff i've interacted with have been nice. Shishito peppers - I expected them to be fried but they are not. It comes in a very savory, delicious sauce that is spicy level 8/10. I never had a sauce like this before and it quickly became addicting. Chicken Karaage - 7/10 It's fried chicken, can't go wrong. I had Furaibo, Gardena CA and can't help but compare the lighter batter from there. Del Mar Roll - 9/10 the sushi here is very fresh, clean simple eating. Lemon Cilantro Roll - 9/10 I expected lemon cilantro sauce, but it was dry roll, which many people like. I just like my sushi and poke wet with thick sauces. My date ordered a lunch special Tonkotsu Ramen with a spicy tuna roll. We split and order of steamed gyoza. The steamed gyoza came out first, quickly followed by my bulgogi bowl, giving us a few minutes before our tonkotsu ramen arrived. The tonkotsu ramen was flavorful and the meat had some notes of sweet bbq flavoring, but it was still good (to me). While this is not a strictly traditional Japanese restaurant, it has all the key elements for a good dining experience: friendly and prompt service, a casual izakaya-feel ideal for drinking with a small group; and most importantly well-made food and solid drink options.
