In addition to traditional sushi, Harney Poway offers an incredible vegan menu! This is one of the few places I am able to get tempura vegetables and fried sushi. The Vegan "OG" is my favorite! The food, absolutely incredible! Only reason this location did not get five stars was because of how nervous I was watching an employee repeatedly cough INTO HER HAND, then proceed to touch our utensils, cups, etc. The waitress also had extremely long nails that went directly into our edamame bowl while serving it. That aside, the restaurant has ample seating and an extensive menu offering something for everyone. read more

My friend and I decided to try Harney for the first time the other night. 2 things that could potentially make this a new go to restaurant...they use chicken breasts for their chicken dishes and they have fountain Coke Zero. We both ordered chicken Katsu bentos. The box came with rice, salad, edamame, and 2 pieces of CA roll. The Katsu was good but it unfortunately was served with their version of Katsu sauce. It was creamy and a little spicy. We did not care for it at all. I am Japanese and I think any kind of tonkatsu and chicken Katsu should be served with Katsu sauce. It would have been nice to be given a choice. Service was decent. read more

My daughter and I like to check out different places for sushi. We were in Poway and decided to give this place a try. It was just ok. We noticed that almost all rolls came with cream cheese. Luckily, our server checked with the sushi chef and was able to have our rolls made without cream cheese. The quality of the fish was just ok. I love salmon belly, but the server checked with the chef and confirmed that sadly they don't have salmon belly available at this location. They don't have anything belly here, which makes me question the freshness of the fish. Do they only get filets of fish and not the entire fish? The salmon wasn't bad, but it didn't taste fresh either. In addition to the salmon sashimi, we ordered 2 rolls and both came heavily sauced, perhaps to hide the quality of the fish?? Last night was epic at Harney Poway. Zoe was our server she was super fun and helped us break out of our usual order. We added Sea Spider which was incredible then did Ana Roll and Culichi Wa Roll. We had a nice Friday night out at Harney. Sashimi is very fresh and creatively served. The 15 piece chef special is a bit on the expensive side and the pieces are quite small but it did have bluefin and halibut. Yellowtail kama was the best I ever had, nicely seasoned and garlicky. Salmon skin handrolls were just ok, the carrots were marinated in something that tasted a bit off and the salmon skin wasn't very crispy. Great service by Zoe. I've been to this place twice now, and honestly if I had written a review right after my first visit, I probably would've given it 5 stars. The first time I came was about 1-2 years ago. We dined in, the restaurant wasn't too busy, and our waitress was super friendly and gave us really good recommendations. The place itself is very spacious with both indoor and outdoor seating. One thing I absolutely LOVE is that they have a whole vegan section with so many options. We ordered the shishito peppers and vegetable gyoza as appetizers, and for my main I got the Vegan O'sider. Everything was so delicious that I couldn't wait to come back. On my most recent visit, I ordered takeout and I got the gyoza roll and the shishito peppers again. The gyoza roll was honestly amazing, but I was a little disappointed with the peppers this time. The portion seemed noticeably smaller compared to my first visit, and they just didn't taste quite as good as I remembered. I also noticed the prices have gone up quite a bit. Overall, I still really enjoy the food here, especially their vegan options, but the main downside for me now is the portion size compared to the price. read more

Came here to meet up with some friends from out of town, they had seating for larger parties, which was perfect. While the staff here was pleasant, they were not out of the way nice, nor attentive. We ordered a few items off the Starters menu. Spicy tuna crispy rice and the Hamachi kama. The kama was actually quite good! Nicely cooked with bits of crisp and plenty of tender yellowtail. The Spicy tuna crispy rice I would pass on if I were to come back. We shared 2 rolls, the Culichi-wa (soy paper, spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, salmon poke, togorashi, micro greens, and mango salsa) and the Sea Spider (soft shell crab, spicy krab, seared sea bass, lemon garlic aioli, masago, Negi, faux-nagi sauce, ponzu). The Culichi-wa was the better of the 2 rolls, however I don't know that I would order either again. We ordered a few pieces of nigiri, Hamachi and Salmon, neither seemed to be the freshest. I enjoy trying new sushi places as much as I can, this place seems like another of the places who pretty much slap cream cheese, shrimp tempura, or krab in all of their rolls and just make the tops look a bit different. read more

The service was poor. The food was not great. We were a party of 10 and were seated at the large table for dinner on a weekend. The sweltering heat inside the restaurant was unbearable. Once we ordered and the food slowly came out, there was a span of 20 min where a few of us were waiting for the rest of our order to arrive. Yum yum yum!!! Came here on a Friday evening and it was not super crowded so I think a rsvp is not needed but the food and service was great! My friend and I ordered 3 rolls and we were satisfied. We ordered the Ana roll, Lightning roll, and the Sea Spider. One down sod was there were out of black cod and replaced it with eel, I wanted to try the black cod. New sushi restaurant and we went for their great Happy Hour. It is from 5-6pm on weekdays. I think 1-3pm on the weekends. No alcohol yet but was told that it's coming in a couple of weeks. Food was delicious. Love the grilled salmon with green salad. The portions were big and prices were reasonable. The deep fried ice cream dessert was much larger than expected too. We came in without a reservation on a very busy Friday evening. They sat us on the patio. With the heater on we were all comfortable with the temperature. My only complaint is the seats on the patio are pretty uncomfortable. I went numb sitting out there. I got the vegan gyoza roll and it was absolutely delicious. Well, I have been to the old town Harney restaurant many times over the last 10 years. Ive never been disappointed with their service or food. I Thought we would give Poway location a try boy what a mistake. The restaurant does not have a lot of room when it comes to seating. My husband is 6'2 and we were Seated an extremely small table. The table happened to not be sturdy it was off-balance our drinks almost spilt all over the table. The waitress comes over and crawls under the table on the side my husband is sitting on doesn't even say excuse me or tell him to please move back and she tries to fix it, which was really strange so my husband backed up and was like whoa whoa. She comes up from under the table and told us to slide over to the other table next to us. Well, it was dirty. There was food all over the floor and on the booth seat. The sushi wasn't that great. One of the plates that our sushi was, served on was dirty as well. We will most definitely not be returning to this location. read more

Zoe is the absolutely best restaurant server we have ever met. We thought our first trip to this place was a one off but NO! As soon as we walked in Zoe embraced us like old friends. Everything is fresh and the flavors are bold! Brealynn also was so friendly. We were thrilled to meet the owner, Jesse, so that we could express our joy over Zoe. We used to frequent the Harney Sushi located in Old Town waaaaay back in the day and it never disappointed. I can say the same for this location as well. It is located in a small strip mall in Poway. Not sure if there is an affiliation or not though but I digress. What I ordered: Orange Crush: I'm a fan of thinly sliced lemon so this was right up my alley: shrimp tempura, cream cheese, spicy tuna, ponzu sauce and lemon. Yum! Rainbow Roll: A go-to at every sushi spot, I enjoyed this one: salmon, tuna, avocado. Nice and fresh. Salmon Skin Roll: The hubby loves crispy salmon skin so this was a winner for him: crispy salmon skin, gobo, cucumber. Service was pretty good and our food took awhile to come out. Harney coming in hot! Some of the most creative bites of sushi I've had in a longtime. Juan our sushi chef was excellent and so was the rest of the staff, their service was outstanding. The food was great. I love the interior and how they fixed up the restaurant, the windows are all new and they added a neat led screen that features a virtual aquarium. Along with the tasty eats I enjoyed admiring the artwork behind the sushi bar. The music was just right for my taste. They also have happy hour 8pm - close. All in all a great first experience. I had made a reservation for 10 people for my kids' School Foundation meeting. Making a reservation was easy! Actually we showed up with 12 people and they accommodated us easily. I have never been to this restaurant before but the vibe of the restaurant was cool! They sat us in this large high top table that fit all 12 of us comfortably. We were seated in a good spot of us to hold our meeting and not be too much of a bother to the other guests in the restaurant. The manager greeted our party and gave us an amazing appetizer to try since it was some of our first time there! It was delicious. Our server was great and checked in on us regularly. We made a reservation and when we arrived, it was fairly empty but within an hour, it was packed with quite a long wait! There are 3 sushi spots within a mile or two of this area and we'd pick Harney again and again. Our server, Angie, whom I'm fairly confident is also the manager, was busy making sure all tables were taken care of and visited and still attended to us. The sushi? Unbelievably good. We had 2 toddlers and a baby with us and they shared the kids bento box which is a brilliant idea to have for children. All in all, fabulous! read more

Food here is super yummy with great prices + a fun "backwards happy hour." Inside decor is modern black/white with a big 4 panel tv against one wall. They have booths, regular tables, and a bar-ish sitting area. Had reservations last night, but to my surprise it had not gotten busy yet. Ordered the harney peno, dynamite roll, a fried salmon skin hand roll and the rock shrimp dish. Good amount of food and plenty of leftovers for lunch today. I did dock half a star since the floor was a disaster and some of the tables with place settings needed to be rewiped...other than that-a well deserved 4.5 out of 5.
