If you're looking for AYCE sushi, they stopped offering this about 3 months ago. Instead, they now offer BOGO half off. Any rolls on the menu, including the specialty rolls, are buy one get one half off. It's a great deal and the fish is fresh. I took my daughter and niece here today to celebrate her Earth Day Birthday. Came in originally for al carte, but I convinced myself to try the ayce lunch menu. Ordered a lot of nigiris, some handrolls, baked rolls, and appetizers for a total of three rounds. Super full by the end of the meal. I was a little hesitant at first about the authenticity of the restaurant, but I was pleased that the fish was fresh and good quality. My only comment is that the rolls fell apart super easily, possibly something that could be improved upon! The server was great! It was an okay AYCE experience. Service was really lovely from our waitstaff, however the food was a bit lacking. Most sushi restaurants also have this vibe where chefs are ecstatic and say hello or at least acknowledge us, but we didn't sense that kind of vibe at all. Rice makes or breaks it for me and it was pretty inconsistent throughout my meal. I despise hard, under-seasoned rice. It was cooked, however it tasted like it was in the fridge for quite some time. Appetizers like fried calamari were overcooked, chicken karaage a bit undercooked... Fish was a bit inconsistent as well...throughout our first round we got some cuts that were somewhat fishy, but that's okay, we'd get less of that cut and got more of the fish that weren't fishy the next round...but we ended up being duped and got fishy fish that was fresher tasting the last round.. Also I'm not a fan of end parts for nigiri sushi...They could've reserved them for maki or roll sushi so the slices of fish were inconsistent as well. We'd get center cuts one round but the next we'd get end pieces. Just the overall inconsistency with fish makes the experience a little lackluster. And the wasabi was a hard pass. I would've gladly paid more if they offered fresh wasabi. Gari was a bit dried out too. They both lost the pungency so it seems they went stale as well. Overall, we found other items like miso soup, fried tempura, and the carpaccio to be the most fulfilling. I'd recommend getting those as they were somewhat decent. If I were to come here again, I think I'd opt out of AYCE and just do the regular menu or do take out. Came here for the first time recently fur the All you can eat sushi, and had a good experience. This is located is a small strip of various businesses and had plenty of parking. The restaurant was very clean and the decor was very cute and minimalistic. The staff were very nice and our server gave us lots of recommendations. The AYCE menu has a lot to choose from, including appetizers. We all tried so many things like the spicy edamame, gyoza, miso soup, mussels, and of course lots of yummy sushi. Just like most all you can eat places they charge you if you don't finish everything, including the rice. But you are allowed to take 2 pieces to go, per person. I enjoyed the various sushi and it was pretty fresh tasting. One of our favorites was the Hawaiian roll which we ordered twice. We also enjoyed a dragon roll that the server recommended. I also loved the flavorful miso soup, and the spicy edamame, which had just the right amount of kick to it. I think my only wish is I would have liked to see some real crab in the sushi, as I mostly saw imitation krab on the menu. It was still very good, but I think that would have made it that much better. The price was very reasonable and they even let you use coupons if you have them. Exceptionally good food and wonderful service! Yakumi Sushi is a great place for a date night, dinner with family/friends, or even if you just want to treat yourself. The restaurant is clean and modern, table seating and bar seating available. They have a couple TVs behind the bar and you can see the sushi chefs preparing everything right in front of you. We ordered chicken katsu bento, chicken gyoza, and tuna maki. Everything tasted so fresh and well seasoned. My husband said the sushi rice was a revelation; flavorful and complex while still allowing the fish to take center stage. I was also very impressed with my bento. Katsu was fried well, meat was tender and not too fatty. The tempura was light and crispy and generously portioned. Our little one really enjoyed the gyoza and the miso soup (that came with the bento). Special shout out to the service here! It was taking a bit for the cooked food to come out, and even though we didn't say anything, the staff came to apologize and made an effort to compensate for the delay! I've been looking for a new sushi spot in our area and Yakumi didn't disappoint. Bonus that they also serve ramen here. We had mixed tempura appetizer and a couple of rolls, along with a bowl of ramen with pork. The ramen was good and filled me up, while both rolls were good (crunchy roll and Poway roll). This is our new go-to sushi place! The fish is just so fresh and the flavors are on point! Plus the staff is all so kind and welcoming and very attentive. Very much worth the drive from Escondido! The restaurant is always so clean and they did an amazing job with placing all the tables. I don't feel crammed in there like I do at other sushi places. A fave is the G.T. Roll although it has quite a spicy kick I need to cool down with a few Philly roll pieces before having another G.T. bite. I've never been much of a fan of imitation crab, but my boyfriend ordered the Volcano roll and I was shocked at how much I liked it! I would order it again. I gave it a try since it was the same price ($32.99) as the Sushi Deluxe combo which i reviewed for my first takeout visit. Plus, service has been lackluster at our previous haunts so we decided to mix it up. Enter Yakumi Sushi. Not only is the service good, their rolls are outstanding. The fish is very fresh and they don't put a ton of rice in the rolls which I appreciate. I usually go with the co-habby but decided to introduce this spot to my picky co-workers who are very particular about their sushi. Needless to say, they approved. 3.5 star review. The new winner in local Poway / Rancho Bernardo sushi restaurants. A "B" for food quality & variety, comfortable environment, good service at okay value prices. The only hiccup we encountered - the two appetizer dishes didn't come until the very end, and one of them, the manager ended up just comping us in a to go box. Among 3 people, we ordered a bunch of things to share. Appetizers: Yellowtail kama: pretty large piece, decently meaty, but I felt a touch under-seasoned and the skin wasn't crispy enough. Inside was kept juicy, deserving a "B" grade. Chicken karaage: this dish never came out as it wasn't ready until we finished everything and was about to pay & leave. The manager was super nice and ended up comping the dish in a to-go box. I tried a piece when I got home. Nice, light batter, but a touch under-seasoned. 3 types of nigiri where the rice was cooked nicely, a touch too much vinegar, but served at a good temperature. It's frustrating to get rice that's either too hot or too cold. Salmon nigiri: salmon was decently fresh, and ratio of fish to rice was fair. A little more fish, ideally a touch fattier would have been nice. I can let is squeeze by with a "B" given this is a neighborhood, rather than a destination sushi place. Unagi sushi: a fair balance of unagi to rice, but the unagi tasted rather mild. Slightly longer roast with a touch more sauce would have made a huge difference. As is, a "B-". Uni nigiri: at least they have it! But the uni wasn't fresh enough. One piece was fine - creamy, quite sweet. The other piece, however, wasn't as good - a touch fishy. So, I can only give this a "C+". The bento box was very nicely done. A "B+" overall. Miso soup had fair amount of miso, not watery like many other neighborhood Japanese restaurants. The salad tasted very fresh. Tempura was light and non-greasy. Chicken teriyaki was cooked very nicely, juicy with good flavor. We came in on a Thursday and the place was significantly empty, there were 2 other tables and no one sitting at the bar. A huge difference from the busy Friday night. Our server was extremely out of it, not sure if she was new or what, but after she took our order we asked her for ponzu sauce and she delivered the ponzu sauce to the table behind us. The table in front of us asked for extra ginger and she delivered the ginger to us. The same with a drink refill she would deliver the things to the wrong tables. If you like AYCE sushi, Yakumi is a great stop. The food quality is great, and there is some great variety for choices. The service is hit or miss, if you go when it's busy, it can take 20 minutes to even get your drink order in, which is a major negative. If you go a little off rush, it is a great experience, and the staff is super peppy. The management is extremely receptive to input from guests, so if the volume is too high on the music, they are happy to turn it down. The good and great things outweigh the negatives. Came by here on a Friday night with my mom Kim who happens to work in the same plaza. She's been working in that plaza at the Barbershop for almost two decades and is still cutting hair to this day. She's seen businesses come and go for years and it is always interesting to see what business will move in. We have seen this restaurant in their remodel and renovation phases for well over a year and were excited to see that they were finally open! My mom headed over first after work to grab a seat in case it was busy. We were seated at the bar so we could see all the action! I was shocked to see how big of a space this restaurant occupied! All the years I've driven by this place, I have never been inside until now. We looked through their menu and decided on the Super Dragon Roll, Tokyo Roll, and Sushi Combo 1 with my choice of a yellowtail hand roll and spider hand roll. The food came out quickly and looked absolutely delicious! To preface, my mom is only recently opening up her world to sushi, especially of the raw fish variety so I am very careful about which ones I choose to introduce to her. She really enjoyed the Super Dragon Roll which is a go to for her. We then shared the remaining Tokyo Roll and she had the spider hand roll which she loved. The Sushi Combo 1 selections were delicious and I really enjoyed each and every piece. It is also an amazing value for 6 pieces of nigiri and two very good sized hand rolls! I seriously cannot wait to come back for that combo again and again. The spider hand roll was so good, we ordered two additional ones. They were so warm and crispy and delicious! I told my mom that the best way to eat hand rolls is once they come out so that the nori stays nice and crispy and she seriously enjoyed every bite. Overall the service and food at Yakumi were great and I will definitely be coming back again. It's nice to have another good sushi spot that I can frequent! I might give the Sushi Deluxe combo a try next time to see what variety of nigiri is offered. She also ordered the salmon roll for the main part of her meal, and she thought it was just so so definitely not as good as other salmon rolls that she's had in the past because it had nothing on it other than just being a salmon roll. Since I've never been here before I decided to get the sushi deluxe which is like $33, and I would never order it again. It looked beautiful, but the taste was just so so and I only ate about 2/3 of it. There were no sauces on it or served with it, and as far as I'm concerned, it was a $33 disappointment, if it wasn't for the jalapeño poppers, I would've given this place one star . I asked for green tea to be served with my meal and I was brought a metal cup with green tea in it that was hotter than hell, I expected a pot of tea with some small cups as is usually served in a sushi restaurant. The presentation of everything was beautiful and tasteful, but the taste wasn't as good as it looked. I was very very disappointed in this meal that I spent near $80 for I won't be back. I'm sure there's something on the menu that I would like if I just ordered separate things, but if I'm ordering their sushi deluxe, I expect to have a deluxe experience and that didn't happen unfortunately. They recently introduced AYCE option and I can confidently say this is now the best place for AYCE sushi in San Diego. At $32.99 for lunch, eel is included with no limit. That statement alone should tell you all you need to know about the value you are getting. The eel nigiris are plump, warm and well seasoned. You will not find equivalent value anywhere. The other buffet places have smaller eel pieces and only limit to one piece per person. The Japanese scallop is my next favorite. Fresh and you get the whole piece. Not the smaller diced version seen at usual buffet, also unlimited! Tuna, salmon and octopus were delicious. Unfortunate they did not offer squid and uni were sold out. Only dish I did not enjoy was the garlic edamame. Way too salty with the soy sauce coating every single piece. I honestly believe the value and quality they are offering is not economically sustainable and they will eventually increase the price or limit the premium option like unagi and scallop. Before that happens, do your wallet and stomach a favor and give this place a try! read more
