If it wasn't for the Mexican restaurant next door we frequent, I would have no idea this place existed! I'm so glad we checked out Ai Sushi & Teriyaki on Scripps Poway Parkway. The restaurant is fairly small but so clean and beautifully decorated with an homage to Totoro, the popular Japanese character. The staff were all so welcoming, friendly and genuine. At some points however I felt like I needed a Rosetta Stone, although I suppose that lent an air of authenticity to the place. We order many of the same items at all Japanese establishments we frequent and noticed immediately that this was a standout. Particularly their shrimp tempura and cream cheese wontons. Among the finest we've had. We will be back soon for sure as it now ranks as a favorite Japanese/Sushi style restaurant in the Poway area.

Back from airport. Stopped for dinner before home. Apps of Karage chicken and calamari very good. Hot and crispy. Had bento box for dinner. Salmon , tempura , and sushi all good. Recommend.

Great place for cheap quality sushi! My boyfriend and I order from this place via UberEats often (they have a Buy One Get One Free promo for certain menu items on there) but decided to come in person on a Sunday afternoon. Very quiet place, but they play a mix of pop and kpop on their speakers. When we got there, it was pretty much empty - we were the only people dining in for the entire 45 min we were there. Service was really fast as a result. We ordered three rolls (as they have a Dine-In Special of Buy Two Rolls Get One Free from 11am to 4pm) and the Cream Cheese Wontons, which are always a hit. The food came out really quickly. My boyfriend's favorites are the Spanish and Hercules roll, the former of which has a nice lemony tang to it and the latter was a no rice roll. My personal favorite is the pizza roll, which I think is really yummy. They get a bunch of takeout orders, but dining in is fine as well! Overall recommend.

Can't believe I never wrote a review for this place. This is my go to sushi spot in the area! Service is always quick and excellent. I've had many sushi rolls from here and they are always delicious! Their flavor profiles are great imo. Other places may have more "unique" profiles but can always be a hit or miss. I like my sushi "simple". That being said, the sushi here is by no means basic. It's just right and always hit the spot. I've tried many other sushi spots in the area but this is my fav. There's a lot of variety so you won't get bored with the menu. The vibe is very homey and chill.

Avocado Roll was good Chicken teriyaki's is ok Reason for the 2* was a safety issue. Not sure why there was something that feels like and looks like a little bone in which could've been swallowed

This Japanese style restaurant has very good sushi rolls and generous teriyaki plates at reasonable prices, especially when utilizing their pricing specials like free sushi rolls or buy one get one feee deals on Uber eats. Their teriyaki chicken is one of our favorite dishes since it's very good quality with little fatty meat. Portions are great. We love their sushi quality and great portions of fish. Maki rolls are outstanding. Not too much rice in the rolls. Great! Jessica Alba rolls are delicious. The service is very nice and helpful. We liked their friendly demeanor. The restaurant is cozy and cute. It's a good local sushi place for Scripps Ranch and Poway.

Was searching for quick sushi and saw this place had 4.5 Yelp review so decided to give a new sushi place try. The restaurant is on smaller side but cozy. We went on Sunday evening but was seated right away. There were two sushi chefs and two servers working and was able to order right away. I ordered sprite, house salad, amazing dragon roll, spider rolls and baked salmon roll. They give you can of sprite not the tap soda so it was good lol. I want the bubbles. Amazing dragon roll was descent but spider roll was pretty good. Baked salmon roll was not bad but I thought sauce was too heavy. House salad sauce was good but could have been better. They had a lot of take out orders. Overall it's a descent sushi place

Yum Yum Roll

Ordered avocado roll, cucumber roll, Yum Yum roll and yakisoba. The avocado and cucumber rolls are very fresh. The Yum Yum roll is my favorite and I really loved the spicy mango salsa inside. The Yakisoba was just okay. Would definitely come back for the rolls.

Came back to update my review on my favorite sushi spot!!! I seriously love Ai Sushi & Teriyaki so much. It's one of our go to sushi spots for both take out and dining in. Their salmon skin rolls is one of my favorites, we always get it!! Our favorite rolls are the Spanish Roll and Poway Roll and also always have to get a Dragon Roll! The service here is always friendly and I look forward to stopping in when I'm craving sushi. My only note is for take out it does take slightly longer than their predicted time, they are always slammed with take out orders, so just plan accordingly! Their food is worth it!!

Out of everything, my favorite is the ability for this place to stay consistent and that all food is tasty and flavorful while having a huge menu. I really enjoy the spicy mayo here. The servers are always so nice and paying is through their toast little handheld device. Parking spots are plentiful, but a little small in size. This place is god for big parties and I love coming here when there is a game because the multiple tvs are typically basketball/baseball/football. I highly recommend coming here!

The staff are very friendly and greet you immediately, except for the sushi chef, who is very stern and does not engage. We came at opening, and the place was empty, for a Saturday, I found that strange. We were told to choose any seat we wanted. Service was quick and very attentive. The menu has a little of everything, but it definitely caters more to the American palate than the Japanese. We ordered Spicy Cucumbers and Shishito Peppers as starters. Both were good. They actually tasted really good when you ate them together. For our mains, we ordered Unagi sashimi style, the honey roll, and the Roka roll. To be brutally honest, I rate sushi restaurants based on their Unagi. For me, it has to be cut very traditionally and served the same. This Unagi did not meet my standards, and yet, it was very tasty and fresh. It was a good surprise. The Honey Roll was very fresh and tasty, except for the lemon on top. The pith was not removed, and it gave it a bitter aftertaste. When we removed the lemon, it was very good. I did not like the Roka Roll, but my daughter really enjoyed it. It was missing something, in my opinion. The portions are generous, so you can fill up with just a few selections. This was just not to my palate. We asked for hot tea, and they brought us a coffee mug with a tea bag and hot water. As I said, more American than Japanese in style. The worst part for me was the ladies' room. I doubt they can do much about this, but there is such a strong sewer smell in there that it is overpowering and really hard to use the bathroom.

Cute sushi spot near Phil's bbq…read more Very warm and inviting inside and I like all the booths and how spaced out they are even in the center of the restaurant. There's a lot of businesses around this area so I can see Sushi Kami being a popular spot for a go-to lunch outside of work. We came for dinner and got seated right away and it wasn't too busy at all. It was nice but still casual at the same time if that makes sense. I will say the parking was a little tight and we had to make a bit of an awkward U-turn to get to the restaurant but the lot wasn't that full so it wasn't too bad but I could see this being trickier in the daytime. I really enjoyed both the spicy tuna and salmon. I've had a lot of weird spicy tuna but this one hit just right. It's always hard to find that perfect balance between fish and spice but I really enjoyed this one. The salmon was good too. The standout was definitely the tempura we got as well. It was large and came out hot and crispy and perfect. This is the type of sushi restaurant I could take people to who don't necessarily like sushi all that much. There's lots of options on the menu including bulgogi (next time I shall try!) and really good combos for people to enjoy. Ambiance is chill but still has that fun sushi vibe with the displays of fish (and I even saw some creative fish decorating on the walls which I thought was a nice touch) Service was nice and they always refilled our waters without us having to ask. I enjoyed the food and the vibe! Would definitely come back to try more ...and brings others along too!

It looks like most of the other tables were reserved for reservations. The decor is modern and very clean and chic. They also had a high chair and was accommodating with our baby. Food was incredible and the quality of the fish is evident throughout. We started with the mixed shrimp and vegetable tempura - light crispy batter, really good. The sashimi champaloo came with 12 pieces of sashimi, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and the fish of the day was albacore. For rolls, we got the Luna Lemon, Maru's Sushi Toro, and Hamachi Hiro. The rolls were a good size and I loved how each had a fun twist (but at the same time not TOO crazy with their combinations like some other sushi places). You can tell it was designed with intention and each roll had a nice balance. The Luna Lemon roll was great with spicy tuna inside, salmon outside, and the soy dressing and shallot oil put it over the top. The Maru's Sushi - Toro roll looked so good in the photos so I knew we had to order it. The negitoro was delicious and did not disappoint. The Hamachi Hiro roll was hearty and loved the combination of yellowtail outside the shrimp tempura in the inside. We were blown away by how fast the service is. The staff was friendly and on top of everything, and the food came out REALLY fast. For example, when we ordered an extra roll at the end, it came out in maybe 3 minutes and we were shocked. Every piece was delicious! -Chirashi bowl ($30.95): I really enjoyed the sushi rice in this bowl since not every restaurant does quality sushi rice. The sashimi was pretty good, but quality wise the sashimi champloo was definitely superior. -Salmon mango roll ($9.50): This had spicy salmon, mango, and ume furikake. This was quite tasty, and definitely had a kick to it. -Maru Maru roll ($9.50): This had imitation crab meat, shrimp tempura, and avocado. A basic roll but still good. -Chicken katsu curry don ($16.95): This was disappointing because the portion was quite small for the price. I do like how the curry was packaged separately. All in all, Hakumaru has quality sashimi and rolls, but could work on portion size for chicken katsu curry don.
