We recently held a celebration of life for my mom here, and from the moment we walked in, I knew this room was going to hold something special. Planning an event like this isn't easy -- there's so much weight to it, wanting every detail to honor someone you love -- and this team made that possible in a way I'll always be grateful for. Soft draping along the ceiling, a gorgeous chandelier, candlelight, and floral centerpieces on every table -- it felt warm and intimate, like the space itself was wrapping its arms around all of us as we gathered to remember her. Seeing my mom's photo up on the screens around the room, surrounded by family and friends sharing stories, laughter, and tears, is something I'll never forget. The service that night was incredible. The bartenders, especially, brought such an open, easygoing energy -- they were so fun to be around, and they helped lighten the mood in a way that let us laugh and celebrate my mom's life, even amid the grief. Had a table we didn't know was near the kitchen so the staff were talking, as you'd expect, but it was detracting. The server was attentive and friendly. My boyfriend and I were in the area for our anniversary, and after some research had decided to make reservations at Tonic which could not have been a more perfect choice. To our surprise the restaurant was very slow on Saturday evening when we arrived, we were promptly greeted and allowed to choose whichever table we wanted! Our server Alexandria quickly greeted us, and was nothing short of fabulous and attentive our whole dining experience!! The space was beautifully designed and the lighting was just perfect! We ordered the calamari and short rib egg rolls to start off; both were insanely delicious/flavorful! I ordered the beef short ribs & my partner ordered the crab cake sandwich as our mains (although we were already stuffed from our delicious apps by the time they came out), both were sooooo yummy. All of our food came out perfect and very promptly! Our server surprised us with a celebratory sparkler & the yummiest cheesecake to go. Visited on Valentine's Day with my Valentine. Was able to find close by street parking and sat at the bar for a drink before our reservation time-hostesses and bartenders were welcoming. Menu was great, many choices of meats and seafood without overdoing it. Food was served timely and cooked perfectly. Had the twin lobster tails and 10oz filet. Seemed that they were hosting Ella wedding party but you never would've known it. They also had live music which you were able to see from the bar, and a few tvs at the bar for sports viewing. I decided to check out Tonic after it was recommended to me by several locals. The establishment is nice, gives a modern vibe and diner ambiance to it. The staff is also extremely friendly and seemed happy to be there. Very interactive with their guests and their regulars. The food was okay. There's not much that will stand out or catch your attention on the menu, so I went it a cheeseburger. It was really dry when it came out, and the toppings didn't seem too fresh. There aren't a lot of options in downtown, especially as the evening goes on.. I would only recommend to try this if you're in a crunch. read more

I order a T-Bone steak. I dont know what I received but it looked more like a Tomahawk steak. Do they know the difference? Aside from this the meat was terrible. Tough as could be and a challenge to eat. It was so tough and filled with pockets of fat and veins, not marbled. It did have a good flavor and was cooked as ordered. I had a side of cream spinach. It was served cold! By the time the waitress came back to the table I was basically finished eating so it could not be sent back to heat properly. We came here on the first day of Brandywine restaurant week, but they did not seem to offer restaurant week menu to us. So I have always drove by this place but never eaten here before! The place is very clean and beautifully decorated inside. We were seated but the window and our server introduced herself and told us about the specials. My friend and I ordered drinks and calamari to start off with. I got the juniper which was a gin based drink with a merlot floater. Very good cocktail :) our complementary bread was these rolls with salt flakes on top. They were alittle hard and seem to have sat out for a bit since they were lukewarm. We ordered our entrees shortly after our appetizer. The calamari was good! I feel like most places would give you more for an appetizer but we enjoyed it. Not the best but pretty decent. Then we talked and hung out. Our entrees were taking forever it seems like. Around 40-45 mins out entrees came out. I knew there was a private event next door they could affect the wait time but still it was annoying. We finally got our entrees. I got the new York strip cooked perfectly medium rare with a great demi glace sauce...but the steak was lukewarm. Like it's been out for awhile. I was starting so I didn't ask the staff about it. It was still good but not warm which is why it's disappointing. My friend got the short ribs and hers came out hot atleast. Her ribs tasted great. We cleared both trays including the marvelous mashed potatoes and honey roasted carrots. The 16 oz bone in ribeye was split between two in our group and was done to perfection. The wagyu NY strip is another melt-in-your-mouth delight. The creamed spinach is a yummy side. And then there's dessert! The house-made banana pineapple sorbet and the orange cranberry bread pudding are both memorable!! Went to Delaware to try out this spot because it showed up on my instagram timeline. I was impressed! The food is superb. For appetizers I had the short rib eggs rolls and mussels. So good! And for the entree I had the Bison Short rib with a side of mushrooms. Let me tell you, it was so well seasoned. Extremely flavorful. The drinks were also very good. I had a ginger beer whisky concoction which was delightful. The place is quiet, very intimate setting, and they had an 80s playlist that I thoroughly enjoyed. Service was very attentive. We finally returned to Tonic after a long hiatus for New Year's Eve and were glad to see they offered their regular menu rather than the overpriced prix fixe menus so many other restaurants were pushing. That was genuinely appreciated. We started with the cheese plate, which was quite good. Ample portions for two, with a nice variety of accompaniments. For my entrée, I ordered the seafood salad. The crab was fresh, delicious, and generously portioned. Unfortunately, the shrimp component was disappointing: only two shrimp, cut in half. While I understand restaurants are navigating rising costs and making adjustments to survive, this felt like an unnecessarily obvious and tacky cost-cutting move that detracted from an otherwise solid dish. My husband had the NY strip, which he enjoyed, and the mashed potatoes were excellent. We also splurged on a $60 bottle of wine from one of our favorite wineries....more than we usually spend, but it was absolutely worth it. Overall, we still like Tonic and generally enjoy dining here, but the shrimp portion on the seafood salad was ridiculous which is why I only gave three stars. Do better! read more

What a great time! The doors were open it was a beautiful night. We went before the play at Delaware Theater. We had delicious New Zealand Sauvignon blanc for our drinks. The fried goat cheese appetizer, the calamari, and the burrata salad. It was my friends birthday celebration so we had a delicious ice cream dessert. I pulled off 95 en route to Boston and picked Tonic because of its proximity to my hotel (Sheraton Suites). I had a good meal. Not excellent but solid. I ordered an 8 oz. Filet and got mushrooms and spinach to accompany. Vegetables were good. The steak was a very thick cut. Great crust. I worry that it hadn't come to room temperature before being grilled, though. I asked for it to be cooked straight up medium. When I first cut into it, I thought it was a little well done, but when I cut it in half, it was very rare (bright red) in the middle and grey at the edges. So, it wasn't the best steak I've ever had. I didn't complain nor send it back, cause I didn't intend to eat the whole piece anyway. I ate around the red center. The two bartenders (Brandy) were great. Good menu with lots of selections. I have celiac disease so none of the appetizers were safe for me. (Shrimp cocktail doesn't count in my book). read more

When you pay $50+ for a steak, the expectations are high. Unfortunately Tonic gave me a steak that was over cooked (med vs med rare), tough, and fairly tasteless. I was very surprised at the poor quality of the meat and lack of seasoning. Ambience was very nice. Appetizers, bread and wine all met or exceeded expectations. I am still on the fence on whether I should give this place another try or not. Nothing I had was good. My friend and I ordered a Long Island ice tea, while his was drinkable mines on the other hand was way too strong. This was not my first Long Island and I'm aware of what they are made of but they supposed to be drinkable. I passed it over to my friend who order more soda to mix it with just to able to drink it. I ended up ordering another drink which just tasted like ginger beer and nothing else. We order the cheesesteak egg rolls which were bland. Nothing to brag about or order again. We also had the seared scallops with risotto and broccolini. As you can see in the picture posted the "risotto" was not risotto but more like just wet rice with minimal flavor. Very convenient parking garages (reasonably priced) right next to the restaurant made life easy, especially when you're not familiar with the area. LOVE IT! Ventured to Tonic to celebrate a 30th birthday and it was very good! Seating was a little awkward. My friend arrived first and the hostess was adamant she was the pair for a man who was waiting for a friend (lol) and this was still getting hashed when I arrived. But we had our choice of tables and got a nice one on the patio. Our server Sam was awesome. Attentive but not hovering and she nailed every item without writing it down (a trick I always appreciate). Appetizers: we tried the baby octopus (pass) and the hummus (a must try). Soup was the chowder and it was fine but kind of a cross between New England and Manhattan Cocktails: rounds of the house rose (clean, crisp, drier) and The Rutherford (gin and hibiscus pleasures) Entrees: I had the seafood salad (it was ok but wouldn't get it again - it needed more than just lettuce and the roasted red peppers for veg / the dressing was tasty though). My friend had the mustard salmon and it was hella good. Dessert: this course was the favorite. Tonic was a block from the hotel. No problem getting a table, we had the option of outdoor dining or indoor. We selected the open area in the bar. We started with a vodka jalapeño infused dirty martini and of course Vodka Tonics. We selected the pan seared scallops with root vegetables and a baked potato and blackened salmon with asparagus, spinach and Old Bay French Fries. The service was great. I was dining with a foodie, so.... Tonic has a nice bar area with 4 screens for sports. They have live music on Saturday nights. Plus, they have a special events space available to rent. I had to Hibbert and a beet salad and the sorbet for dessert. My friend had the fillet mignon and said it was one of the best steaks she has ever eaten.
